Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov told U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday he “did not favor” a U.N. human rights probe into violence in the eastern part of the country, a senior U.N. official said.
Uzbekistan blamed neighboring Kyrgyzstan for the violence where seven hundred citizens were slaughtered by authorities last week.
And, an international human rights group is claiming that possibly 1,000 civilians were killed in the melee.
