London Attorney Pleads Guilty to Lying to FBI Over Contact With Trump Campaign

Alex van der Zwaan has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about contact with Richard Gates, a former Trump campaign official and associate of Paul Manafort.

The charge does not implicate the Trump campaign.

“The charge against van der Zwaan does not involve election meddling or the Trump campaign’s operations. It stems from the special counsel’s investigation into a covert Washington lobbying campaign Manafort and Gates are accused of directing on behalf of pro-Russian Ukrainian interests,” WCNC reports.

Judge Amy Jackson has agreed to expedite van der Zwaan’s sentencing because his wife Eva Kahn, the daughter of Russian oligarch German Kahn, is pregnant and living in London. He is facing up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, though he is expected to be sentenced to six months or less because of his cooperation with the Mueller probe.

German Kahn is currently suing Fusion GPS for libel over being named in their infamous Trump dossier that was compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele.
