UPDATE: DONALD TRUMP DEFENDS SUPPORTERS After Hillary’s ‘Basket of Deplorables’ Slurs

UPDATE: Donald Trump posted a statement on Twitter Saturday morning defending his “amazing, hard working” supporters against Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” insults.

“Wow, Hillary Clinton was SO INSULTING to my supporters, millions of amazing, hard working people. I think it will cost her at the Polls!

Kellyanne Conway, campaign manager for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, and Jason Miller, Trump’s Senior Communications Advisor, defended Trump’s supporters from an attack on them Friday night by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton at an elite New York City fundraiser headlined by Barbra Streisand that raised a reported $6 million.

Clinton called Trump supporters, a “basket of deplorables”, “irredeemable” and “not America” among many slurs she hurled against half the country. Clinton also said they were so desperate for change they don’t care where help comes from.

Conway spoke out on Twitter while Miller issued a formal statement through the campaign.

Meanwhile Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill doubled down on Clinton’s insults in a three part Twitter statement late Friday night.

Clinton’s remarks about Trump supporters:

I know there are only 60 days left to make our case–and don’t get complacent, don’t see the latest outrageous, offensive, inappropriate comment and think well he’s done now. We are living in a volatile political environment.

“You know, just to be grossly generalist, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people – now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric.

“Now some of these folks, they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.

“But the other basket–and I know this because I see friends from all over America here–I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas–as well as, you know, New York and California–but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change. It doesn’t really even matter where it comes from. They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they’re in a dead end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.”

Conway’s responses on Twitter:

“One day after promising to be aspirational & uplifting, Hillary insults millions of Americans. #desperate”

“Hillary, placing people in “baskets”, slandering them but admitting after 8 yrs, they are “desperate for change.””

Statement by Miller:

“Just when Hillary Clinton said she was going to start running a positive campaign, she ripped off her mask and revealed her true contempt for everyday Americans. Tonight’s comments were more than another example of Clinton lying to the country about her emails, jeopardizing our national security, or even calling citizens ‘super-predators’ – this was Clinton, as a defender of Washington’s rigged system – telling the American public that she could care less about them. And what’s truly deplorable isn’t just that Hillary Clinton made an inexcusable mistake in front of wealthy donors and reporters happened to be around to catch it, it’s that Clinton revealed just how little she thinks of the hard-working men and women of America.”

Nick Merrill,Traveling Press Secretary for Clinton, reiterated Clinton’s attacks on Trump supporters:

“(1/3) She gave an entire speech about how the alt right movement is using his campaign to advance its hate movement.”

“(2/3) Obviously not everyone supporting Trump is part of the alt right, but alt right leaders are with Trump.”

“(3/3) And their supporters appear to make up half his crowd when you observe the tone of his events.”

Ted Johnson with Variety posted a Soundcloud of Clinton insulting half of America.
