The Obama Administration blew at least $65 million on the fledgling Egyptian democracy.
Today, a military coup took over the government.
The US Embassy in Cairo reported:

Supporting the Democratic Transition

Soon after Egypt’s revolution, the United States provided $65 million for programs to support the democratic transition. U.S.-supported democratic transition projects are being implemented in a spirit of partnership. As such, we are focused on the immediate priorities that Egyptians have identified: holding free and fair elections, empowering citizens to play a role in their country’s future, protecting and expanding universal rights, expanding independent civil society, and building democratic institutions that are transparent and accountable. Our projects build on the energy, commitment, and accomplishments of the Egyptian people.

The US assistance supported a variety of trainings and programs including communication skills and women’s rights.

** Providing information about how to write and present objective and unbiased information about candidates, platforms, and election procedures in order to better inform the Egyptian electorate. This reporting uses platforms like the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, radio, and television to spread accurate information about the election process.

** Training women to play a role in the constitution-drafting process.

** Helping youth communicate and present their transition priorities to Egyptian officials through meetings, letters, and discussion events.
