Gaffetastic!… Obama Flubs His Military Attacks on Mitt Romney (Video)

Poor Barack Obama.
He tried to be slick and attack Mitt Romney on on the military – but ended up humiliating himself.
Here are his snide remarks during the debate:

“But I think Governor Romney maybe hasn’t spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military’s changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.”

Now here’s the truth…
Marines still use bayonets.
Horses were used by the military during the Iraq invasion.

Obama also does not know the difference between a ship and a boat.
Submarines are boats – not ships.
What an embarrassment.

More… Again, US Marines still use bayonets.

Bone headded move to mock the navy when you need states like VA and have a close Senate race in CT where the Coast guard Academy is located and the submarine bases.

Mr. President the main reason the Navy needs more ships is a better rotation policy. Ships and crews are wearing out from this OPTEMPO of the last few years. 8 month deployments with a 6 month turnaround between another 8 month deployment are not fun. Less ships with the same if not more commitments equals pain for those in the Navy and Marine Corps.

I thought Obama’s comment was just sarcasm. Done in unbelievably poor taste. His attempt to belittle Romney backfired. I believe the comment was about fleet size and numbers, not types. The bayonet comment was sheer distraction. Who cares what the bayonet count is. Except for campaign backdrop he neither understands nor likes folks in the military.

  • snewb

A battleship is a ship..right? So are destroyers and frigates. Obama is clueless.

Hoft, you can’t call the president a moron and then link to an article that never mentions that horses were used by the US after world war I. At least try and back up your claims.

  • OldSailor

Long term, we need 3 ships for each one deployed. One in training, one in repair / refit cycle and one actually deployed. As the WWII vets will tell you, being constantly deployed wears out both ships and crews. Army, Air Force and Marines follow similar cycles where possible though the details vary (of course.)

Oh, Jim … Zero was right about one thing, a submarine is a ship but carries the nick “boat.” An 8,500 ton destroyer is a ship, so is an 8,500 ton submarine.

Um, we just recently dedicated an enormous bronze statue at ground zero here in NYC of a Special Forces soldier ON HORSEBACK. The statue is in tribute to all the special forces who fought and rode across Afghanistan ON HORSEBACK!!!
What a lame zinger by Obama!

  • Fred

As a old submariner, just be careful about the ships vs boats issue. Officially, nuclear submarines are ships – they have names, and all named vessels are officially “ships”. But the officers and sailors in the fleet almost universally refer to submarines as “boats”, and no one corrects them. Probably a holdover from the time when the US Navy only numbered the subs (no names), and maybe a little bit of some German U-Boat tradition that worked its way into our force.

Statement of U.S. Marine Corps Gen. James N. Mattis, U.S. Central Command commander, before the Senate Armed Services Committee
    March 6, 2012

    QUOTE:
The maritime environment also permits freedom of action unfettered by international boundaries and agreements.

However, the stacked Iranian threats in our AOR of ballistic missiles, long range rockets, mines, small boats, cruise missiles and submarines demand stronger naval presence and capability to protect vital sea lines of communication.

I view with concern efforts to decrease our naval presence and capability when our volatile AOR and the threats of the future are increasingly maritime.

Demands on our naval forces will only grow in the future; I anticipate that we will need more maritime missile defense, anti-fast attack craft capabilities, amphibious ships and mine-countermeasure capability, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets.

Maintaining a credible naval force covered by sufficient aviation combat power is essential for demonstrating our enduring commitment to regional partners, building trust and relationships and rapid projection of power in a crisis.

  • Will

Retired submariner (or bubble head as we call them in the Navy) here. Submarines are called boats by tradition dating back to the time when they were numbered and not named and were not commissioned as ships of the line. This has not been true since sometime around WW1. All US Navy submarines are commissioned ships of the line. Attack submarines are designated with both a name and a hull number that starts with SSN. This stands for Submersible Ship, Nuclear. Ballistic missile subs have hull numbers that start with SSBN or Submersible Ship, Ballistic, Nuclear. The traditions live on though and bubble heads still refer to their vessels as boats

  • DannyK

I support Romney, but this is childish.

Barry said we have “FEWER fewer horses and bayonets”. How is that inconsistent with the Marines still using bayonets and horses being used by the military during the Iraq invasion?

    Boat, ship, who cares?

I hope everyone realized that Obama didn’t say our military no longer used horses and bayonets, he simply stated that they used FEWER horses and bayonets.

  • He is a prime example of a smart mouth punk, and never had his ass kicked for it when he was a young man.
Too bad some Marine did’nt teach him some lessons in respect when he was young.
And he does’nt have any room to talk about not knowing about the US Military, as i re-call he pronounced Corps, as Corpse.

Obama did not say that the military does not use Bayonets. He said they use fewer bayonets, just like they use fewer Horses then they did in 1916

He was explaining to the clueless Romney that technology has changed and due to it our capacity.
