CATHOLIC BISHOPS Slam Obama’s Assault on Religious Freedom

Last week Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan lashed out at the Obama Administration for forcing religious organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience. The new rules are so strict that most Catholic institutions will not qualify for an exemption.

(The Echo)

Even Pope Benedict warned of the “grave threat” to religious freedom in United States before the Obama Administration approved the new rules.

Now this…
In thousands of churches this weekend, Catholic priests read a version of this letter during Mass. The letter was sent out by the Catholic bishops.
“We will not comply.”
Business Insider reported:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be “of, by, and for the people,” has just been dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people — the Catholic population — and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees’ health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those “services” in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.

In so ruling, the Obama Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled to either violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Obama Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.

And therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting,to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Obama Administration’s decision.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

If the contest is Obama or The Pope, The Pope wins hands down. He has and Army with God on his side.

It is a true reflection on Obama incompetence and if he believes he is going to take on the Catholic Church, he has another thing coming. You see, you mess with the Catholics in any Country they are going to win.

On another note, it seems that Obama presents with his girls in a church that was so evidently filled with prejudices in this day and age, well, Obama feelings speak for themselves and ignored by others. Now, he will reap what he sows. Fight is just beginning.

  • Just Da Facts

If Catholics really want to take on Obama, they need to be willing to go for the jugular, that is they need to demand that Obama release all of all of his records and that he make his alleged original copy of his long form birth certificate availible for forensic examination.

If Catholics don’t have the guts to do this, Obama will probably be re-elected and they will be forced to submit to his mandates and injunctions.

Make no mistake about it, Obama is a Dictator.

    Game on!

I would believe the bishops more if they weren’t constantly getting in bed with the democrats on social issues all the while ignoring the twin elephants in the room, that democrats are fully pro abortion and anti religion. How can they now scream about anti religion when they repeatedly carry water for democrats. After 30+ years of watching churches in the Chicago and Milwaukee area fawn over democrats for them to suddenly turn their coats and get indignant about what they surely knew would be a pro abortion agenda in the health care bill, that they fully supported, seems either naive or extremely stupid. Maybe they were fed a line about we won’t force the Catholic Hospitals to conform, but how could they possibly expect the democrat tiger to change it’s stripes. mpw

Unfortunately, the USCCB made their deal with the devil long ago by supporting the so called “Social Justice” movement and they are still giving millions to Planned Parenthood. If this actually wakes them up to what they have done…wonderful! I’m right there with them. But….I have my doubts.

George Soros: there ‘isn’t all that much difference’ between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama

This isn’t exactly the kind of endorsement the Romney campaign is looking for. It’s probably even less welcome than the purported nod for Newt Gingrich from crooked GOP congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham sent from his jail cell.

Speaking in Davos, gathering place for the global elites and upscale chattering classes, billionaire investor George Soros – loathed by conservative activists for his “zillion-dollar left-wing radical agenda machine” – seemed to be pretty much OK with the notion of a Romney presidency.

“Well, look, either you’ll have an extremist conservative, be it Gingrich or Santorum, in which case I think it will make a big difference which of the two comes in,” he told Chrystia Freeland of Reuters in a videotaped interview. “If it’s between Obama and Romney, there isn’t all that much difference except for the crowd that they bring with them.”

In my church here in New York, a majority of the parishoners are liberal Democrats who support Obama and abortion. This letter is nothing but a buzzing gnat to them.

The embrace the pro-life narrative when it comes to opposing war and the death penalty for murderers, but when it comes to protecting the unborn, they opt for convenience and liberalism becomes their scripture.

  • Sasja

I thought most catholics voted for the Infanticide-In-Chief. Far as I’m concerned, they got what they voted for. So, tough.

  • Taqiyyotomist

I think that even most Catholics, along with most other Christians, still spend the other six days watching TV.

Church on Sunday, the Altar of Satan the other six days, pumping the Gospel of Death into their psyches.

Which one wins their hearts? I think it’s obvious when considering voting patterns, isn’t it?

Any bets on when the Paulian spammer will drop his screed on this thread?

    I’ll take “by comment #25”.

The laity have been leading the charge against RvW for 39 years. It’s time for the bishops to lead us on this. We’ll follow. A priest suggested that the bishops need to take canonical actions with dissenters such as Sebelius, Pelosi, Biden, Durbin, Cuomo, etc… to bolster credibility on this.

    Obama2012. You’re sick. And wrong.

  • The Elector of Saxony

I’m sorry, but are these the same Church leaders who gave Obama an honorary degree at Notre Dame? There is not one person who didn’t know that Obama was going to ram abortion funding and contraception funding and gay marriage down the throats of the American people. He voted against a bill that would have required medical professionals to save the lives of abortion victims born alive. Obama voted live, inconvenient babies into the trash can. The Catholic Bishops knew every bit of this to be true, but they became apostates when they groveled at Obama’s black feet.

There is no more Church, it is dead. It has left the Europeans by whom it was built, nurtured, and meant, and has gone on to becoming nothing more than a Leftist organization built to advance the interests of non-White peoples over the White, Western Man. The only thing the Church hates is the White, Western, Productive Classes. Abortion, gay marriage, contraception, that’s all negotiable if they can have unfettered immigration, wealth redistribution, and “social justice” above all things. To stand aghast now that it is their ox being gored is a bit much for me. I remain faithful to the true Church of Rome, which no longer exists in the United States or in much of the Western World. Any true Church would have excommunicated en masse the Kennedy family, Pelousy, Kerry and the host of Democrat Catholics who stand shoulder to shoulder with their Party, holding the hand of every abortionist as he tears a human being to shreds in the womb. The Church has refused to do anything which might actually save the lives of children. When they start publicly excommunicating Democrats, I’ll believe the Church cares about abortion. Until then, forget it. It’s fundamental that you cannot be a Catholic and support abortion rights.

  • Kate

I am waiting to hear the Notre Dame is giving Obama yet another high honor. Sleep with the devil and this is what happens. Maybe all those Catholic Democrats will wake up and see the attack on Christianity, but I am not holding my breath. Religious rights mean nothing to Obama unless Muslims are concerned.

I notice quite a few imbeciles making comments about Catholics and Bishops and heirarchy being liberal or going the “social justice” route.
Folks, this violation of a clear Constitutional freedom of Religion AFFECTS ALL OF US.
Which of YOUR RIGHTS is it ok for Obama to take??
This is not about the Catholic church.

  • rcl

    Impeach the bastard now!

  • Glenmore

A letter was distributed or read in many Churches Sunday expressing the opposition to this political act and asking parishioners to call their representatives to protest it. Elsewhere claims are being made that this ‘politicking from the pulpit’ voids the Church’s tax-exempt status. We’ll see how far that threat goes.

  • RedBeard

Agreed, Gus, this does affect us all, even heathens like myself. It’s a horrible overreach by a left-wing administration, and it must be stopped.

But there is something to the comments about the Catholic Church. It seems just a bit disingenuous for the church leaders to cozy up to liberals and adopt most of their agenda, and then get outraged when liberals do what liberals do.

  • Finncrisp

I have been long perplexed by the long standing tradition of the Catholic vote going to Democrats, who are now actually Demomarxists (Barry’s fundamental transfomation of his party). At long last, perhaps the futility of trusting Marxists to reflect the interests of the Catholic church has finally been shattered. Time is also long past to start consistently excommunicating Catholics in Congress who violate their conscience on these matters. Most if not all, are repeat offenders who have been voting against their “faith” for decades.

The Jewish voter could also wise up and consider if they really are Marxists, and if the Demomarxists really represent thier interests.

  • Bitter Clinger

I’m dreaming of the day that all Catholic institutions in the USA “Goes Gault”! Can you imagine all Catholic hospitals, universities, social service organizations, etc just walking away from their mission in protest? The country would shut down. Atlas Shrugged. It’s time. This latest outrage qualifies.

@Kate: You took the words right off of my keyboard…….

How is it that one president has cause more problems and still can’t manage to help the jobless. He has been a menace to society and gets away with it. Why is that? And the media just keeps on giving and giving him the green light.

Maybe because they have a job? History will not fair to well for Obama. He alienates the good and buddy ups to the donors and his left base. Shameful so uncooperative and yet, spite all of his failures they love the man.

  • xkaydet65

Guys. Life issues AND Social Justice are lynchpins of Catholic teaching. They are not separable. It is quite understandable that both Left and Right non Catholics cannot see that simple fact. This Church today does not take positions for political gain. It takes them for reasons of Right and Wrong in their view.So the Left despises the Church for its opposition to abortion and the gay agenda, while the Right wrings its hands and wants to know why the Church supports illegals and government attempts to redistribute to the so called poor. That’s todays Church. This wasn’t always the Church. It’s better now than in the past when the rich and powerful had first call on Church teaching.

As a Catholic, I’ve often struggled with the fact that other Catholics vote Democratic. I guess the Church buys into the crap about how Democrats are the more “caring” party and the Republicans are “pro-rich” and “anti-poor”.

I don’t buy into it at all.

Now that Obama’s policies, and those of the left, are hitting close to home for Catholics, the Bishops are finally seeing the damage being done. Good for the Bishops for taking a stand! It’s about time!

  • LIndensant

These are the same bishops that sided with Obama during the Obamacare “debate” and now they’re “alarmed”! Hey dummies, welcome to the club!

  • valerie

If Catholics, and others opposed to abortion on religious grounds, push back, they’ll win. The Supreme Court decision reserving the decision of whether to have an abortion to the individual is not the same thing as a decision requiring others to pay for it. Further, they will find substantial support from those who believe that abortion is not a good thing, but that government should not be involved. The latter may well be the majority position of Americans. Finally, I suspect that Obama’s formulation, that abortion is a means of realizing a young girl’s dreams, is unacceptable for people who care about young women.

I am a Catholic, and proud to call myself one, yet I have not attended mass in years. Shortly after 9-11, my parish priest condemned the “war-mongering” by the US and refused to let us pray for our troops during intercessions. Never once did he or his associate priests ask for God’s hand to protect our men and women in uniform. Because of this and the Church’s hierarchy embracing liberal ideology, I will never feel the same toward the “Church” again. I will practice my catholicism according to its fundamental teachings, and cut out the “fallible” middleman.

    A Prayer for Isabella

Putting aside politics for a moment, I hope we can send our collective thoughts and prayers to the Santorum family.

Rick Santorum’s 3 ½ year old daughter, Isabella, is seriously ill — she suffers from the genetic disorder Trisomy 18, also known as “Edwards Syndrome.” I understand very little about the malady, but it’s caused by a chromosomal anomaly and she exists “on the margins of life.”

Santorum has been incredibly candid about young Bella’s illness, but his decision to temporarily suspend his campaign in Florida speaks to the gravity of her condition. She’s been admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment — arguably the best pediatric hospital in the country, and I’m not just saying that because I was born there.

Like I said, I don’t know bupkis about extra chromosomes or autosomal disorders, but I know this little girl has already put up one heck of a fight. The median lifespan for this condition is 5-15 days, and only 8% of infants born with this syndrome live to see their first birthday. One percent of children make it to ten years old, but that small percentage who survive birth and infancy often live to adulthood. Fingers crossed for the latter.

I don’t have kids, and I can’t begin to imagine how difficult this must be for the Santorum family. All I know is, I hope this little girl gets better, and soon.

#40 American Patriot: At my church we routinely pray for our soldiers at Mass. Just because someone is a priest doesn’t preclude them from being an idiot, e.g. the so called Fr. Pfleger in Chicago. Find a church with a good pastor and go there. We need people like you in the congregation.

When you sleep with hookers, eventually you’re going to get crabs….

From the ‘Social Engineering’ that the Diocese of Madison uses our monies for (you know, the Alinsky type of Social Engineering), to the Nuns who act as escorts for those obtaining abortion, the Catholic Church has tainted the real message.

I find it darkly ironic that NOW they get into it. When it hits the real money-making part of the Church…NOW they don’t like it. Heh!

Perhaps I’m just a bit too jaded these days, but watching fellow parishioners spout out the Creed of the church, then say, “oh I’m pro-choice.” Just makes me want to vomit.

But there was a story my Priest related in his homily once, “A man came up to the priest and said, ‘Oh I can’t go to Church, it’s full of hypocrites. To which the priest replied, ‘Not so, there’s always room for one more.’

  • Vicky Hernandez

It doesn’t look like a coinkidink that Obama and his fellow Alinskyites took on the RC Church? The state takes on and subdues a world-wide spiritual organization like the Church and wins, the subjugation of the “rest”–believer, non-believer, whatever individual or organization– is easy! And now, some clerical leaders fell betrayed by Obama. Well, boo hoo. What did they expect? Seriously, even friends of a bully will eventually get the same treatment dispensed on them that they saw delivered on others. Yes, in this case it’ll take a year.

On the other side of the coin, what did the USRC Bishops think? That they could enjoy the “perks” of their office free of other responsibilities because they pass off the responsibility of charity from the individual to the state? Well, that may work for some time. But how about that other “pesky” little duty: defend the Faith? Even if that means to the death. Just like Jesus Christ, His Apostles after Him, and bishops after them?

Time for these boys to be a real Alter Christus–Another Christ. They need to defend the Faith that was passed on by Chist’s Apostles! And if they don’t feel they’re up to those examples they should try these bishops on for size: Thomas Beckett, Fabian Bruskewitz, Daniel R. Jenky, Joseph Ratzinger, aka Pope Benedict XVI, and others .

My Parish has a prayer for the U.S.A and specifically our Soldiers, Sailor and Marines at every Mass. We have a little area next to the Sancutary and Altar that includes petitions and pictures of dozens and dozens of Servicemen and woman at risk. My nephew was wounded in Iraq. His picture was in the group of Servicemen and women. He came home safely and has no permanent injuries.

  • The USCCB is a toothless arm of the DNC- they brought this upon themselves, after spending the last forty plus years providing cover for the proabort D politicians. Maybe if they excommunicated Sebelius, Pelosi and their ilk, you know- do their jobs as the teachers of the faith in this country, then maybe they would have some credibility. With this Catholic, they have none. They kow towed to Obama and then are surprised that we get screwed? Are they kidding- we saw this coming in 2008, before the election! Obama was going to sell the Catholics down the river and lo and behold, he did!

Don’t ya think that this maybe some CYA for the Bishops, and a Cardinal or some other

Same bishops from the same church support the islamisation of Europe. They are kow-towing to an ideology that has zero freedom of religion. They tell us that islam is good because it brings god back into society. They attack all those who speak out against islam. They can all go to hell for all I care.

  • i have been going to church for sixty-four years, i have never heard a political sppech in a catholic church. the closest i ever came to hearing one was a priest complain that 54% of catholics voted for the most pro-abortion president in history, one barak h. obama.

for all of you lambasting the clergy for supporting liberals, it is not done through the religion. i have never been told who to vote for at a church nor do i know anyone that has. whatever support the catholic clergy gives to political candidates is a matter of their own personal beliefs. the reason you see the priests with so many democrats is because there are a lot more catholic democrats than republicans.

that said there has been a leftist infiltration of the catholic church and all catholics should be made aware of it. i never pray for social justice(socialism is the most unjust economic system), i never put money in the collection basket when the cause is pro-liberal or leftist and i urge my fellow catholics to do likewise.

Okay, Obama has pi**ed off the Jews by turning his back on Israel, now he’s pi**ed off the Catholic’s with this, and earlier he pi**ed off all the White people by saying he wasn’t going to go after the White vote only the poor Blacks and Mexican’s.

Now, don’t you think there are enough of us between the Jews, Catholic’s and White people in general to vote Obama out of office? Because you know he won’t ever turn his Black back on the damn Muslims!!

I hadn’t heard his daughter was sick. I sure will pray, because even if she is left ill for awhile, he will drop out of the running so he can be with her. That might be the only thing that helps her recover. I do have kids and I wouldn’t be doing anything where I couldn’t be by her side if she asked for me, she could be going and I would never forgive myself if I wasn’t there by her side if God took her home, you know? Even though you don’t have children just think if it were your mom or dad, but you were out on the campaign trail and couldn’t get home in time, and they died. That would be bad.

So, anyway this goes it’s not going to be good on Santorum to be worried about his daughter being in this kind of condition. So I guess we are down to two, and forget about Paul. So two.

  • Rapid Robert

You people are bigots AND morons. The Catholic Church OFFICIALLY fights abortion- OFFICIALLY fights gay marriage et al. Are there SOME individual Catholics who are liberal? Yes, but PLEASE don’t be so STUPID and BIGOTED as to lie and say that The Church supports these evils. You are also wrong to say that helping the poor no matter their nation makes Catholics deserving of these evils. This is YOUR fight too- please pull your heads out!

If you are a Christian and echo this lying tripe you are guilty of breaking the 8th Commandment- no “ifs, ands, or buts…”
