Barack Obama restored the American horse-slaughter industry this month.
The Washington Times reported:
President Obama earlier this month quietly signed into law a spending bill that restores the American horse-slaughter industry, just a few months after a government investigation said the ban on slaughtering for human consumption was backfiring.
The agriculture spending bill Mr. Obama signed the week before Thanksgiving did not include a ban on the inspection of horse meat — a backdoor prohibition that had, since 2006, effectively halted the U.S. horse-slaughter industry.
In June the Government Accountability Office, Congress’s official investigative branch, released a report saying the ban had shut down U.S. slaughter, but that only depressed prices for horses here while causing many of the animals to be shipped to “foreign slaughtering facilities where U.S. humane slaughtering protections do not apply.”
In unusually blunt language, GAO suggested Congress and Mr. Obama reconsider the ban.
The options facing Congress were to further ban export of horses for slaughter or to lift the domestic slaughter ban. Congress chose the latter.

The original Anti-Slaughter bill was wrong to begin with. Here in New York, people can’t slaughter the horse, so the horse wastes away and then the owner is charged with animal cruelty.
It was a stupid “feel-good” bill to begin with.
Now, as far as Obama: Screw him and horse he rode into town on.

One of the very few things this group of idiots got right! Some horses are better off going to slaughter houses rather than starving to death or being abused, some horses just have no use and some are extremely dangerous animals that could cause injuries or death to folks that are foolish enough to get near them. Before I am ridiculed let me point out that I am a horse lover and a horse owner.

It’s my understanding President Obama profoundly supports the slaughter and eating of horse, given its allegorical importance for progressives in conveying the ultimate destiny of the middle class. As illustrated in George Orwell’s important work, Animal Farm, the progressive pigs ultimately run out of enough “other animals money” that they are forced to sell their hard working middle class horse Boxer for the few dollars necessary to buy more alcohol for the pigs parties.
Michelle and Barry have more date nights, burger runs, and separate 747 Air Force One runs to take and we all know what this nation’s checking account and China loan obligation looks like. It’s time to sell the horse!

People really should know something about a subject before condemning it. This is like everything else. It is PC for horses. Only it is NOT. Horses eat. When you can not buy the supplies, the market is the lowest in history and you can not sell them, what do you think happens to those horses? People turn them out on the roads after they are half starved to death. They can not give them away. Really. They can not find anyone to take them. How do I know? We can not take even part of all that are offered. The county sheriffs are looking and begging for someone to take them. If not, they must take them to the vet and spend about $400 each to kill them. Then bury, etc. What a mess that happens when people mess with things that they are totally clueless about.
For the first time in my lifetime, there is zero horse market. People with horses normally treat them very good and really like horses. I have watched very good, nice horses that would normally sell for a nice price and find a good home go to the killers. Where? Mexico. We giving away our jobs and killed the market and the poor horses. Why? Stupid people and stupid policies.

Many of you are not aware of how they kill horses, in Mexico they knife them to death through the spinal cord until the horse falls to the floor and drowns in it’s own blood, Canada and the U.S. use a gun that shoots a large slug into the horses head, often they miss the crucial spot and the now real-ling animal is either shot at close range or if it is stunned enough they let it get yanked up and sliced up while still alive. I don’t believe in being a vegetarian but I’m not against the killing of animals for food; but I am appalled at the cruel methods we use and the additional cruelty in the slaughter plants, where animals are beaten or brutalized because of ill tempered workers. Many of these horses have served human kind well, and deserve better treatment. We forget it was the horse that helped settle this great country and many countries, they also died in wars for our sake. Can’t we find a more humane way for the end of their lives.

It was a stupid ban and most people didn’t even know we had horse slaughter houses in the US if it hadn’t been enacted in the first place. The question is, is the slaughter house better than a slow painful death due to exposure and hunger? Besides the meat is good and is exported to other countries because, as evidenced by this thread, Americans have this horse worship complex that they don’t have for other fuzzy or cute meat animals and won’t eat horse meat. mpw

Lets face it America is horrible about over breeding, the worst about over breeding greed. And yes our horses are paying, either with starvation or slaughter. Making sure balance is returned by mercy and painless killing is the only way we will resume our market. Most people can’t a ford to keep horses they can’t sell or give away and it hurts us all. This makes me so sick. Just when I thought that animal welfare groups had won the battle and that a sigh of relief could be breathed for these wonderful animals.
I am an animal lover but as in most things I am willing to hear out the arguments for the other side. In this case, those arguments are just ridiculous. I have heard some people trying to paint horse slaughter as something humane. Really? Horses are more like pets than livestock. In many cases they work their whole lives to get what? Shipped off to a terrifying new place where they are slaughtered. Yeah thanks for all the hard work, Trigger.
I have seen others try to claim that the increase in horse neglect is a result of banning horse slaughter! Not the economy, hmmm? Couldn’t be that.
The solution is clearly not only to ban slaughter here but also to ban the shipment of horses to other countries for the same. The only just and humane way to deal with aged and sick animals who can’t be placed with animal welfare groups is to humanely put the animals down. If someone needs help with that in this economy, use the money that was just allocated for the inspections of these horrible places to help defray the cost for those who can’t afford it. I can’t imagine how a horse who worked its whole life and worked off the cost of its purchase and upkeep would not have earned this kind of dignity in the end.
I just can’t believe we are having to fight this battle all over again. Seriously, this is freakin evil.

Just one more reason why Obama should have never become President. Horses have served us for centuries and we repay them by sending them to slaughter houses?? It’s cruel and inhumane and another reason why this world is getting destroyed. The people who control what goes and what doesn’t obviously are a bunch of IDIOTS.
Ok so people might ask the question: We slaughter cows, why not horses? What have cows EVER done for us in the past besides provide us meat? They haven’t carried soldiers in the war and died a slow painful death from a bullet in the chest. Horses have pulled trains and transported our mail and horses have done NOTHING but be a best friend to those who are kind enough to keep them.
Cows are the natural meat that we should eat. It might sound weird, but its true. I truly believe that cows were put on this earth, along with deer and buffalo and elk to help provide humans with protein. Granted the way that we slaughter these animals is completely inhumane!
Horses were NEVER meant to become a slaughtered animal, not after everything they’ve done for us in the past and how DARE Obama sit there and talk speeches about how he wants to help America and make better changes when he hasn’t done one DAMN THING to help this country and everyone knows that. All he has done is make poor decisions, the same damn thing that almost every President has done.
But wait, nobody cares about the life of an animal that has served in the war just as much as any other U.S. soldier.
How can any of us sit here and pretend like this is OK? This is NOT ok and we need to stand up and do something.
Peggy commented:
Just want to highlight the clear alternative to shipping these working/servant creatures to the terrifying experience of slaughter.
Euthanasia.
No starving or suffering animals that noone can care for. But a dignified end for a creature that is more pet than livestock.
If there is money to run a slaughterhouse, then there is money for a far more humane way to dispose of these unwanted animals.
Peggy commented:
It is also not sentimentalism or romanticism that sets these animals apart. On the contrary it is very rational.
Horses are hard-working servants of mankind. Other livestock just basically eat and crap until they die.
Horses also form trusting relationships with people much as any dog would. What a betrayal to send them away from their masters and everything they have ever known to be brutalized by strangers.

Peggy & C-Christian…
Anyone who compares horses to dogs doesn’t know crap about horses. If a horse has any spirit he or she will eventually hurt a human who treats them like a dog. The horse is the noblest animal on earth, including people. The horse is truer than his master. Horses loathe weak people. They are not safe unless you are confident and firm. They know their power, they will share it with you if you earn their respect. I work on that nearly every day.
Tom63010 commented:
I don’t have time to read all the comments so if I repeat get over it. I was a horse owner for many years and boarded at a public facility. While horses judged as a whole are wonderful animals they are also very expensive and there is great financial pressure to just take it to the auction if the animal is unsafe. I owned a horse that was like a big dog. Nothing spooked it, in fact I sold him to a friend when I no longer afford to keep him. He bought him to shoot his black powder pistol off of in competitions. My wife, however bought a horse from a person who had just bought it at a horse auction. Not long after she bought him he spooked and ran out from under her because a buddy rode up through leaves! After many more incidents we took him to auction because we couldn’t afford a pet that cost several hundred dollars a month to keep. Sad as it might be horses like that one should be euthenized but that too would have cost money. Slaughtering horses for horse meat is no different than a cow, chicken, or pig. God gave all animals to Christians to eat if we choose to. I would no problem eating horse meat and I guarantee you when I saw that idiot horse almost kill my wife I would have pulled the trigger myself!

How many horses have you fed and housed? Exactly how many? If the answer is under 100, shut the blankly, blank up. We do not eat horse meat in the US. We do use several of their products. I guess you intend to buy it from other countries and eliminate the horses, or make damn sure only very, very rich people can ‘take such good care of them’. Ha. Sure. How about giving up your kids pets, just to make this thing fair and balanced?
It is true that the ban was one of the cruelest things I have ever witnessed for horses.
Horses are not dogs and cats. It takes MONEY to care for horses. I have seen even poor people do without to take care of their horses. People almost have to LOVE horses to keep them through the years…………..or they are playthings for the rich. Rich.
Unless you are strictly veggie, 100% of the time, you need to get the heck out of the farmer/rancher business. You eat chicken? You ever have a burger? You have your nose in something that is about as bad as Obama limiting your sugar and salt. Get it?
You are being cruel and do not even know it. Cruel, heartless, inhumane and all in the mistaken belief that you are the other. Unless you make your living as a farmer/rancher, you have no say or you shouldn’t. Why? Because you are hurting the horses and being Michelle Obama’s nose.

I have loved horses all my life, and I have always loved them and respected them.If there were no horses, we couldn’t have cars and other things! They helped us with transportation, joy and protection too! And if a horse is being abused and can’t get well anymore, put him down humanley. It doesn’t hurt the horse and it rests in pease. Don’t treat a horse like a dog! I think Obama doesn’t even KNOW what a horse has done for humans. They have always stayed loyal and have served us for century’s. This makes me really sick. I am not gonna vote for Obama ever again unless he is gonna return the bill. It’s not fair how people treat horses and other animals…

$50……………The BAN created a policy that has resulted in many beautiful, gentle, nice horses being put down. That is what is really sick. Sick. It is because people who do not know horses are making the policy. For these kind of horses to have good homes, there must be a market and the middle class must be able to afford them. For all that object to the killer market staying in the US, you are actually forcing the killing of more good horses.
Michelle commented:
Ok folks, I can se alot of people dont know the issue here. Since the ban 77,000 horses or more did not go to slaughter. This flooded the market. The rescues are full, it is getting hard to find a well broke horse because lets face it why should we invest 1000′s of dollars in training into a horse that we cant get $200 for. Slaughter is sad, it sucks, but it is a fact of life. The numbers of abused neglected and abandoned horses are higher than they have ever been. They are a throw away animal now, Why? Because the value is no longer there. Bottom line was they were worth 80 cents a pound so it was worth it to keep them in good condition. Now they are worth like 3 cents a pound. People are now getting horses who have no business having them. Why? Because they are cheap. Horses that went to slaughter in Mexico…well that is a horrible fate. At least in the US it was mostly humane. Yes there are screw ups but they are not the norm. And yes I am a horse lover. But I have seen the abandoned horses starving on BLM ground, I have seen them get hit on the highways. Why does this happen? Because people lose their jobs, they cant afford to feed the horse and they cant sell it and they cant give it away so they turn it loose to hopefully survive or get rescued. The ones who lost were the horses. Do you people realise that horses are selling now for the same price that they were in the 1800′s? Do you not see the problem here? It takes a minimum of $1000 per year per horse to care for it. And that is the bare minimum. In most places it is much more. So before you judge … Think. America has really lost its common sense. Slaughter prices affect the bottom line. If the slaughter prices are high the good horse prices are higher . Dont poke holes in the bottom of a bucket and then wonder why the water runs out. And if you are so opposed to slaughter then YOU go buy and care for that horse that will be going to slaughter otherwise. Until YOU are willing to do that then stay the heck out of my personal property rights! Horses are livestock. Well loved livestock, but still livestock. I once had a cow that was broke to ride, just as good a ride as a horse, even had a great personallity, but I still eat beef. Horses tug at our heart because they are beautiful animals. But they are not human, and they can be very dangerous without the proper training and even then can hurt you. They are not dogs. Come on America, wake up! This counrty used to be great, but the bleeding heart and “we must be politically correct” people are killing our great nation. Why not just put your ass in the air and tell the world to kick it.

Is there no responsibility for the owner of a horse?
This is a companion animal and one who carried soldiers in historic battles of the USA, safely carries police officers as part of a law enforcement team, bonds with children/adults with disabilities as part of therapy sessions, allows us to share in the joy and freedom of being part of them as they race, or jump, or go through their many gaits in shows. We have a bond with them and them with us. They are intelligent and sensitive and stubborn. And for the many gifts they give us, every single day, we owe them their lives. We should never even consider sending them to slaughter houses. In this country, people do not eat horses. We never will.
This entire shameful law is based upon irresponsible, greedy owners/breeders of horses who want to make money. It is that simple. The responsibility of the owner of a horse is to care for it and if it cannot be cared for any longer, or is ill, and there is no place for it, then it must be humanely euthanized and buried. How simple is that? And the breeders and auction participants need to stop over breeding horses to sell and abandon. Take some responsibility like the adult and animal owner you are.
This is sickening. If the United States really goes through with this; we will have lost our soul as a nation.
Kayla D. commented:
Ok first off I am a horse lover and have been all my life, but I am also a horse owner, and I understand the financial obligation that it takes to keep a horse healthy, let alone the FIVE that I have. And it is true that the closing of slaughterhouses in the USA has significantly hurt the horse market, im watching my well-bred, well-trained horses that normally would be worth thousands of dollars become nothing more than $100-300, while dangerous horses are being sold for the same price. I am very adament about how horses are treated, and I am a member of two horse rescues. People are being left without options when it comes to the expenses, and thats why many are turning their horses loose or leaving them to starve. I work a full time job JUST TO FEED MY HORSES, they eat better than I do! but a lot of people cant afford to do that unless like someone earlier said they are RICH (which how many of us normal people are rich? we’re not!). The banning of horse slaughter plus the failing economy is a big factor in all this! People not being smart about breeding their horses and regulating their breeding is also a HUGE factor in it as well! As much as it kills me to say this, and as much as I respect and love horses (mine are like my kids) I believe that slaughter needs to be brought back, but HIGHLY regulated! The horses need to be taken care of and humanely treated! That way horses that are dangerous, etc are taken care of (for lack of a nicer term) the horse market will start increasing and the surplus of unwanted and anbandoned with slowly diminish and get back under control.

Ok,i do not know anything about Obama’s work. But, i shall say, in my country horse slaughter is aloud, not regulated, checked, known about. Thousands of horses come from countries like Poland to be killed inhumanely, here. I am a total vegetarian(i eat my chicken’s eggs and my cousin’s cheese.(has freely raised cows and calves are kept, not killed, he doesn’t produce much in fact..)) this means that i do NOT agree with animal consumptions and no, i do not have carnivore pets, and yes i have 7 horses and 5 donkeys, i am also a natural horse trainer, so i know what i’m talking about.
Last thing before i begin. NO horse on this earth is mean, dangerous, insane; on its own(except for the 1/1000 which has neurological deficits) Their problems are ALL and ALWAYS caused by people, nobody knows exactly when they get devastated mentally, but the run, spook, rear, kick, bite effects are evident.
Obama should simply define horses as PETS. Illegal slaughter, illegal unreasonable euthanasia, illegal non pet horses export. It basically cuts their legs off. Microchip or code check at all fronteers, with signed confirm of horse travelling outside of the states.
What he did was not STUPID,INSANE, but REASONABLE. Those s**t people stole, slaughtered people’s horse, friend, for money WITHOUT them even knowing.Horses tied in their life-time stalls, tied and stabbed to death, then slaughtered and left, skin-less for the owners to find.
Why? Because people demanded horse meat, and the less there is of something, the more it costs, the more it costs, the more people can make out of it. The more horses there are for consumption, the less likely they will be killed…. they are nothing ‘special’ . An example is shark fins, same concept, same s**t people. Nobody who cares about money, cares about animals.
-HORSES ONLY AS PETS, AS DOGS.
-LIMIT FOAL PRODUCING PER YEAR.
-MAKE ILLEGAL ‘SPORT-HORSE’ SLAUGHTER
-EUTHANIZING HORSES (HUMANE, AS IF DONE CORRECTLY, NO SUFFERING AT ALL).
DOCUMENT SUPPORTED EXPORT AND REALLY HIGH COSTS FOR THOSE DOCUMENTS(WILL FORCE PEOPLE WHO GO FOR CHEAP TO NOT DO THAT AS IT DESTROYES CHANCES OF PROFIT) E.G $1000 PER HORSE AND IT MUST HAVE ALL MEDICAL CHECKS, VACCINES AND BLOOD TESTS DONE.
-MAKING THOSE PEOPLE’S LIFE DIFFICULT, THAT IS THE SOLUTION.
And lastly, if you want to eat horse meat, just go and do it in a ‘animals are objects’ country.(in my opinion obviously) AND PLEASE, don’t argue about all animals are on earth to be eaten:
FOR THE RELIGIOUS:
as the bible said(i’m athiest…)(translated with google…) : “Going to Jerusalem, Jesus met a camel with a heavy load of wood. The camel does not bring himself to carry it up the hill and the driver beat it and treated it cruelly, but he could not move the animal.
Jesus saw it, he said: “Why do you beat your brother?” And the man replied: “I did not know he was my brother, is it not a beast of burden, made to serve?” And Jesus said: “Has not the same God who created this animal with the same substance of your children that you need and you do not have both received the same breath from God? ”
FOR THE SCIENTISTS:
If you look at the evolution of life, you may see that the tree chart(as i call it) with today’s species has ALL different animals connected, we are the most evolved mentally, not the most important. We come from the same cells as horses, slugs, monkeys and cats. But, ‘oh poor monkeys, you can’t treat them like that, they have feelings’ it happens also in the case of dogs, but about the ones who REALLY SAVED OUR LIVES IN THE PAST THOUSANDS OF YEARS. ..
No-one cares about. If you believe in something, do, but to the end.
STOP U.S(i hope worldwide one day) HORSE(in context, i think all animals.) SLAUGHTER!
WE LOVE THEM! THEY DESERVE IT!
I, WE, HAVE TO FIGHT FOR THEM.
FOR THEIR RIGHT TO NOT LIVE AND DIE IN PAIN!
P.S: If what i affirm, may seem immature to some of you, well. It may well be. I’m 16.

My observation… commented:
Naomi T, Italy that was a very thoughtful post…
As with all living things, the world has has become lazy; because if this were not true, there would be better solutions…
