Good Grief. EPA Wants to Kill Off 183,000 Private Sector Jobs a Year With New Regs

Good grief.
The far left has completely lost it.
The Obama team’s latest EPA plan will kill off 183,000 private sector jobs a year.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson testifies at a hearing of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations on Capitol Hill in Washington, September 22, 2011. (REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst)

New EPA regulations will kill at least 183,000 private sector jobs per year.
Penn Energy reported:

As the U.S. House of Representatives prepares to vote on the TRAIN Act, the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, released a comprehensive analysis conducted by National Economic Research Associates (NERA) showing that several of EPA’s new and proposed regulations would lead to 183,000 lost jobs per year and significant increases in the price of electricity and natural gas.

“America’s coal-fueled electric industry has invested nearly $100 billion, so far, to achieve impressive reductions in air pollution. Now is the wrong time for EPA to blindly push ahead without even pausing long enough to understand how all of these rules could hurt American jobs and consumers,” said Steve Miller, president and CEO of ACCCE.

The analysis, done on behalf of ACCCE by NERA, relies on state-of-the-art modeling tools, as well as government data for almost all of its assumptions. NERA’s analysis projects that EPA’s Cross-State Air Pollution Rule and proposed Maximum Achievable Control Technology, coal combustion residuals, and cooling water intake requirements for power plants would, over the 2012-2020 period:

** Cost the power industry $21 billion per year;
** Cause an average loss of 183,000 jobs per year;
** Increase electricity costs by double digits in many regions of the U.S.;
** Cost consumers over $50 billion more for natural gas; and
** Reduce the disposable income of the average American family by $270 a year.

At the same time, the EPA says it will need another 230,000 new bureaucrats to implement their disastrous job killing policies.
The Daily Caller reported:

The Environmental Protection Agency has said new greenhouse gas regulations, as proposed, may be “absurd” in application and “impossible to administer” by its self-imposed 2016 deadline. But the agency is still asking for taxpayers to shoulder the burden of up to 230,000 new bureaucrats — at a cost of $21 billion — to attempt to implement the rules.

The EPA aims to regulate greenhouse gas emissions through the Clean Air Act, even though the law doesn’t give the EPA explicit power to do so. The agency’s authority to move forward is being challenged in court by petitioners who argue that such a decision should be left for Congress to make.

It is time to defund these idiots. Then lets write legsislation that regulates regulators and follows these idiots in their jobs and regulates them from ever holding another job.

It should force them to pay the highest tax rate possible, they should be told they have to document every gallon of gas, btu of heat, bit of natural gas, volt of electricity and every bit of dust they create. They should be required to do it daily and report on every bit of trash they create and where it ends up and who it influences.

They should be told they have to do it for free and hire people with their own money to help them.

    Screw them

odumbo doing exactly what he set out to do…the destruction of America as we know it

  • Patty

Unfortunately, Section 403 could knock the legs out from under these lawsuits by creating a clear legislative history that takes as a given the existence of EPA authority to regulate greenhouse gases. If the bill passes, EPA will argue it is conclusive proof that their authority exists, and will likely find a sympathetic ear from a judiciary that has consistently favored expansive interpretations of the Clean Air Act.

Republican proponents of the bill make a variety of arguments, contending essentially that advancing natural-gas vehicles is such a national imperative that free-market principles should be set aside and government should step in. But the biggest impact of the bill may be something entirely different and wholly unintended: a green light for the EPA’s whole agenda of skyrocketing energy prices via greenhouse-gas regulation. That’s more than enough reason to kill this bill.

  • Patty

Just a post above to show what authority the EPA has and will use for any means to Protect one thing or another their agenda is working hard on to eliminate any progress or growth.

This is a dangerous ride to get on. When progress is on hold for The EPA, for heaven sake, wth, is going on.

  • Multitude

Any good progressive would acknowledge that we have a model problem. We cannot and will not be able to continue to “straddle the fence” with a massive Federal government parasitically sucking off an ever weakening and diminishing private sector. We have clearly reached the brightline to which any further growth in government is not sustainable (actually, we reached it more than three decades ago during Carter’s radical expansions in the bureaucratic Leviathan which followed the extreme growth of the welfare state).

What this means is that there won’t be any further “sustaining game”: the Left must either prepare the grounds for a full government seizure of the entire economy, quickly within the next 2-4 years, or it must collapse and the nation revert back to a government less than 6% of GDP should it repay its debt obligations.

There’s no more middle ground. Republicans need to understand this faster than the Progressives as they will need representatives who are able to move to nearly a libertarian model. John McCains, Lindsay Grahams, Romneys, Perrys and other moderates won’t be able to resist the strong special interest demands for more sustaining game, and the alternative of a government seizure and take-over of the economy will be inevitable.

Close up the EPA and the NLRB. They have outlived their usefulness. There is no way the republicans in Congress would give a penny or should give a penny to hire another EPA bureaucrat. In fact the funding should be cut to 2000 levels. While this may not be possible until after the 2012 elections, assuming repubs get control of the Senate, it must be on the front burner. Also the head of the EPA and her legal staff should have their budgets zeroed out just like the hundreds of thousands of jobs they seek to murder.

The ironic thing is that Obama is /was for Obamacare, Higher gas prices, Jobs for the always present middle class he claims to love, home loans for everyone, more regulation, Union bailouts etc etc and those are the exact things that have taken the country down, keep it down and prevent it from making a comeback…

Kinda interesting huh…coincidence? plan ? Yet it will ultimately be his downfall and the reason he is shown to be the worst president in the history of thios country and the worst leader in history of the world.’

When a conservative is in the whitehouse and conservatives take over both houses and fix things( and not become big spending idiot liberals again) the liberal welfare socialist model will be shown to be the complete failure it is and kill it for the next 20 years until people forget and try electing socialists again

He is a disaster of epic proportion.

  • listingstarboard

Easy to see what the plan was with Obama as POTUS. Obama gets to be a celebrity, get rich and continue doing the only thing he knows how to do– golf and campaign. Michelle OBama, Valerie Jarrett, Eric Holder, Susan Rice, Samantha Power, Lisa Jackson, Kath Sebellius etal are busy destroying the Constitution and any individual freedoms left in America. All lovingly directed by Buffett Imelt and Soros.

How many jobs have already been lost in the Energy Industries? Whole Regions of the country have been affected.

Yeah…Main reason I support Rick Perry is I know stopping the EPA is a TOP priority for him. The EPA has stopped drilling and frakking, affected Coal and Agriculture. The EPA tried to shut down the Texas Grid.

    It is a job killer.

Romney is pro-AGW and Romneycare/Obamacare (another disaster)

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has landed a spot on Time magazine’s 2011 list of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu wrote a brief essay about Jackson for the magazine.

“As the U.S. grapples with serious energy issues, we need serious leaders like Lisa. She understands not only the risks we face but also the opportunities to create a new generation of jobs and to grow the economy while protecting public health and the environment,” he writes.

Jackson is hardly without her detractors, however. Capitol Hill Republicans say the Environmental Protection Agency is charging ahead with a raft of overly aggressive Clean Air Act rules that the lawmakers allege will hurt economic growth.

Jackson proclaimed over Twitter Tuesday afternoon that she is “Honored to be featured with so many incredible thinkers, artists & changemakers in Time’s 100 most influential people.”

“at the same time, the EPA says it will need another 230,000 new bureaucrats” and there is the true agenda. Shovel ready jobs was nothing more than code for pencil pushing bureaucrats, bigger government and a smaller private work force. The only hole the Socialist whore Obama wants to dig, is the one to bury America.

  • bigkahuna

Is not Govt’s job to create jobs, create energy, choose what jobs or what energy are created.
If anything its job is to use common sense to provide some oversight and limited regulation of things without killing those same jobs and energy.

I would not mind if 75%-85% of the EPA was eliminated and put it in the hands of the states

  • We are being herded like sheep to the slaughter using regulations to do so.

    “…230,000 new bureaucrats — at a cost of $21 billion…”

So, this is the secret bureaucrat metric: $21 billion / 230,000 = $91,000 per year. Although this is only 79% of the what USA Today said [1] was the average cost of a Federal worker, maybe this does not include all the fringe benefits and management overhead.

Even so, the median household income in 2010 was $52,026. This means that for every bureaucrat hired for enforcing this new regulation, it costs the economy the equivalent of all the jobs held in almost 2 median households. And this is in addition to how many jobs the regulations kill.

At this rate, we are headed for penury faster than you can say “high speed rail.”

[1] Federal workers earning double their private counterparts, USA Today, 8/13/2010:

    defund them now!!

Buckwheat…I had been thinking the same thing…How many workers earning $50,000 paying taxes does it take to pay the salaray and benefits of one overpaid, worthless Federal nightmare of an employee who gets to retire with a pension way to early ???

By firing one million federal employees we could save two million jobs in the private sector and borrow much less from China

and that is why Government is too big for its britches!

And this is why Tea Party is mad. This is why our nation’s economy isn’t growing. Our kids have no jobs and they live with parents. This is one mess that we have allowed for way to long. We have stood by and done nothing. The past election was a start. I have seen the freshman members and tea party members who are truly patriots. They are some of the brightest and honorable people to date. I hope I am around to see them put this nation back on a course of prosperity. RENEWED HOPE, attack the wasteful spending, attack and repeal Obama care, Attack those in government that are destroying this nation’s economy by NOT tapping into our precious resources.

Ajad wants the naives out of the Gulf, what is he talking about. We are a super power, downgrade by Obama, we are fearful of his administration passing regulations and making it so much harder for the next president to undo.

Seriously, we don’t have time to keep this so called president speak!

He has been wasting our time and our dollars. He is a divisionest no such word, but you know what I mean.

Dividing and complicating the growth America is crying out for, poverty is going to get so much worse. And the Middle class of yesterday is now the Poverty class. To But Your Foot On The Very Class That Once Made America.

Now, they are struggling and sunk into another place that was done by Bureaucrats, sub prime loans and cons and crooks, and those patriots and working force who once felt so proud now are suffering at the hands of the greedy government. Government that they made into all their lives like good soldiers who now are cast aside.

EPA must be defunded only for selected activities. This destruction of America by regulation must be halted. Our country is broke and they want to hire 230K more federal workers to staff this destruction?

The next budget cycle must drastically curtail their reach by aggressively defunding as much as possible. Totally out of control.

Jackson had not grown up as an outdoors person, but became interested in matters environmental following the national and international coverage of the Love Canal Disaster.[3] She worked for a year and a half at Clean Sites, a nonprofit that tried to accelerate cleanup of toxic sites.[3]

Then Jackson joined the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., working as a staff-level engineer.[3] She then moved to its regional office in New York City. During her tenure at EPA, Jackson worked in the federal Superfund site remediation program, developing numerous hazardous waste cleanup regulations, overseeing hazardous waste cleanup projects throughout central New Jersey, and directing multimillion-dollar cleanup operations. She later served as deputy director and acting director of the region’s enforcement division.

I want to see a law that says that no Governmental agency can enforce regulations until:

    1) the science behind the regulation, including raw data and metadata have been published and open for comments for one month.

    2) the economic impact calculations have been published and open for comments for one month and

    3) the results of 1 and 2 above are presented to Congress and approved by Congress.

[email protected] it, regulations are law and should be enacted by Congress regardless of what our Supreme Court says.

This is the Socialist Way. Remove private sector jobs and replace them with government ones.

More people dependent on the government, means more voters for Obama.

The whole exercise is to ensure Democrat longevity.

  • does anyone in the EPA care what the majority of american people think about this? what if the majority of the american people don’t want this? shouldn’t they scrap this plan. isn’t that how this government of the people, by the people, for the people is suppose to work?

Why is it when the EPA destroyed the NW lumber industry no oner compalined? When they set wolves loose in the West no one complained. But now the nation is complaining. Could it be as a nation we are all suffering from the tree huggers actions instead of a specific industry?

Our problem is that we have forgotten what the Constitution stands for. The greatest abuser of liberty is the government. The Constitution binds and restrains the government. We must reduce the size and power of the government. The alternate is to be reduced to the status of Zimbabwe or Cuba.

Don’t forget the many billions in costs for making the Chesapeake Bay just a little bit cleaner.

Works out to $10,000 per inhabitant for the surrounding states for the sewage treatment ALONE.

Farms and industries are already closing and moving.

Why? Because pollution was killing off the crabs. However, a 3 year experiment in disallowing winter dredging of pregnant crabs has increased crab population by an incredible 300% in just 3 years.

It wasn’t pollution, it was overharvest of pregnant females. But hey, who cares about the facts, it’s the green religious cause that counts. So jobs must go.

  • Obamas regulation destroy jobs

Lisa Jackson was in New Jersey-I heard she destroyed their economy. Now she is Obamas leading hatchet lady–he has got his destroyer all around him.I heard they are throwing out EPA regs as fast as they can to destroy jobs–he wants the economy to collapse he has wanted that all along. He talks to the welfare unemployed as idiots thinking they do not know what he is doing (he talkstalk jobs) although in the backend he is passing regs to destroy them. He is so frigging evil!! He shut down our defense missile first thing, our space program then he tried to pass this light guard thing which would scramble more defenses from our planes–farmers, education, OIL, land, coal, everything he can he is shutting down all around the US…he is the most evil corrupt person who walked the face of America–a communist reborn!!!

That’s 160,000 pages of new regulations in the past two years, and Congress didn’t vote on any of them or even discuss them. And the new Obamacare regulations haven’t been written yet.

As I stated in another EPA article here, the American Electric Power company will shut down 5 electric plants, due to comply with Obama’s “from coal to natural gas”.

AEP has already told us over 600 will lose their jobs, and never be rehired.

AEP has already told us, our rates will increase by 35% to 40% more, this after in 2010 they got 2 rate increases!

Our only coke plant shut down due to Obama’s EPA!

But coal mined in Wyoming & Washington is shipped to China, while Eastern coal mines are shutting down.

China bought into a south TX oil and gas field.

Obama’s ok with loans going to foreign countries so they can drill for oil, and build new refineries….while he bans here!

Obama’s HOPE was for foreign countries, not us, but his CHANGE was for us….from a prosperous country to a unemployed country!

Mark my words, Obama is working more for foreigners than us!

He even has a program going where Kenyans and other foreigners go to college in their own countries, and we are paying all tuition, room & board, plus a monthly allowance to them!

Do your college kids gets this?

Agreed! Perry has the guts to do this. He’ll be hated and attacked, but he will carry through. The libs and RINO’s already hate him and have started so many, many smears based on half-truths………they will go for the juglar. They are NOT going to let go of the country they’ve worked so hard to transform.

Personally, I think that anyone who wins that is elected by conservatives will be so literally beat up by the same crowd (with the ignorant believing and repeating the lies), that person will be a one-term president but hopefully one that will be able to make some inroads into the present insanity and treason. And, then we’ll have to go through this again on another election with the libs citing the “failures” of the former administration (like as with Bush).

Hope I’m wrong. But, this is a battle for our nation and the enemies won’t be giving up.
I’m assuming, of course, that Obama doesn’t pull some other crap like he’s already done and people just sit around in amazement that he had the “gall” to to this but do nothing about it.

    God help us.
