It’s an Obama World.
Up is down. Right is wrong. Spending brings wealth. And unemployment checks create jobs.
White House Spokesperson Jay Carney says unemployment checks creates jobs.
Real Clear Polticits has the transcript.
“I understand why extending unemployment insurance provides relief to people who need it, but how does that create jobs,” Wall Street Journal’s Laura Meckler asked Jay Carney Wednesday’s WH briefing.
Carney responded: “Oh, uh, it is by, uh, I would expect a reporter from the Wall Street Journal would know this as part of the entrance exam.”
“There are few other ways that can directly put money into the economy than applying unemployment insurance,” Carney said.
Carney answers the question: “It is one of the most direct ways to infuse money directly into the economy because people who are unemployed and obviously aren’t running a paycheck are going to spend the money that they get. They’re not going to save it, they’re going to spend it. And with unemployment insurance, that way, the money goes directly back into the economy, dollar for dollar virtually.”
Hey, let’s give everybody unemployment checks. We’ll create even more jobs!
Nancy Pelosi said the same thing back in 2010.
The sad thing is… They actually believe this crap!

or are those being outsource to China?
ARCB commented:
A French economist, Bastiat, back in the 19th Century demonstrated that Carney’s comment is nonsense in the allegory of the shopkeeper’s window. In order to pay for unemployment, cash is either withdrawn immediately or subsequently from the economy to pay for it. As such, it is a zero (or negative) sum game. The cash if left in the economy would be be put to productive use as well.
It is not so much Carney’s ignorance that is troubling, but rather his ignorance coupled with his arrogance.

Now it is VERY Clear why Obama won’t release his school transcripts. . He flunked Economics 101!!!

Worse, protected by sycophants, liars (like Carney), Congressional toadies/commies/insane folks (examples too numerous to list, and not limited to Dems though they are top heavy with treasonous thieves, a DOJ that is something like out of Communist Russia, the MSM that is filled with some of the baldest liars in journalistic history (Goebbels would be proud, Pravda has nothing on these folks)…..
I would vote for unemployment checks for Carney, though, let him help the economy that way. I’d like to see O on the line, too, but he’ll sickeningly get a pension-for-life, rewarded for destroying what’s decent about America.
JKB commented:
How can people come to believe these fallacies, explained here in 1978 by Milton Friedman, and not face reality which normally would alter beliefs. For some reason, these “educated” elites cannot understand basic economics and focus on keeping money moving rather than actually producing wealth. Think of hamsters on a wheel. Lots of activity but not a whole lot accomplished other than exhaustion and having to stop.

I can’t hire people due to them making more on “Unemployment” and “Working off the books.” When asked “Does that bother you by breaking the law and not reporting income”, standard reply is “Everyone does it.” I know they use the money effectively, going to the “boats” (Missouri), new tattoos, new piercings, parties (booze and food). These tend to be the younger generation out there. The older folks understand and tend to be more respectful of the intended purposes, while they continue to look for work. They seem to understand they would rather be productive than a drain. Different philosophies in life seems to be key here.

Oh Yeah Mr. Carney — tell that to the leftists who don’t pay taxes and think their money comes out of Obama’s stash. I don’t know whether these people are idiots or they think we’re idiots but my head is exploding.

When my son was on unemployment, he paid his rent, bought groceries, and sold his car. There was no job creation involved, and indeed, the economic effect has been the cumulative reduction in spending by people who no longer had jobs.
Because the Obama administration wanted to increase my taxes by by 30K a year, I held off on a home improvement project. That is job destruction, and there has been a huge multiplier effect, so that the housing industry tanked.

I could sort of see if they said it saved jobs, though they would be very little in each town, maybe 160,000 across the US.
Those on unemployment barely have enough to get back, they dont have much left over and actually usually count on others for help month-by-month, so they dont add much to the economy.
The more I think about it, the 160,000, which was 2% of the total unemployed, may be too high.
KOW commented:
Maybe what Obama is planning on doing is changing the Unemployed status to having part-time jobs with the Government.

Yeah, I’ve been watching some MSNBC and the other “Low T” individual gov’t and Commie sponsered mouth organs who show up here and there on tv, and it’s still amazing to see their terminally dumbfounded looks as they reach their primal groundhog minded, “Oh no…what’s there left for the gov’t to do…oh wait, let’s spend some more gov’t money”, er, solution.
Man, talk about live hourly demonstrations of the ability of recycling garbage within a progressive vacuum to power what they still insist is a mind!

Whenever I see Jay Carney I think of Rudolph Hess. A regime shill to be sure, but not smart enough to be quite as evil as the rest of his gang. Delusional at best.
Don’t leave any airplanes parked with the keys in the ignition when he’s loose.
Patriot Act commented:
The argument is bullcrap. For every dollar that you give to someone unemployed, another dollar (much more, actually) must be taken from the pocket of someone else who then cannot spend it, invest it, or use it to hire another employee. It’s not even a zero-sum game. It’s worse than that.
Jay says that Obama wants to extend benefits yet again to increase employment. More transparent nonsense — Obama wants to use it to BUY VOTES. Campaigning is all he knows and all he does.
Is Carney really this stupid, or just this dishonestly subservient?
Alec Rawls commented:
Unemployment insurance is monstrously destructive. Not only are people paid not to work, but the financial burden on companies that lay people off are stupendous. As with many forms of phony “insurance,” the companies that are forced to buy it have their rates raised to cover whatever costs to the system their employees generate. A company’s premiums can easily go up by a full half of the payout to the laid off employee.
I don’t think people realize that this is how the system works, but employers are on the hook for the insurance payouts to the particular individuals who works for them. It’s not a cost-spreading system. Since employers pay for payouts to THEIR employees, the only way to avoid this liability is to not have employees. Here is the start of Michigan’s faq for employers:
“When a worker becomes separated from his or her job and files for unemployment benefits,
the worker’s past employer or employers will probably be charged for any benefits that may
be paid.”
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/uia_92-EmpChrg1_90416_7.pdf
Its the same in every state. That’s how the system works. It is absolutely insane, and is probably the main reason why hiring did not pick up when the economy started to grow slightly. The more the Democrats keep extending the duration of unemployment insurance payouts, the more their former employers have to fork over. Companies CAN’T hire. It is suicide.

This belief by the socialists in the Obama Administration underscores the reason why in Great Britain and in other socialist countries, there is no cutoff for unemployment benefits. You could work three years, get fired, and receive unemployment benefits for the rest of your life.

Stephen Moore of the WSJ laughed uproariously when Michael Medved played this clip, and then he said sarcastically, “Maybe we should triple unemployment benefits and watch the economy really take off.”
He also said that Carney’s nonsensical views are held by many Ivy-League economists.
He also said that everything the Obama administration has done with respect to the economy has been wrong.
Indeed.
TMI commented:
Keynesian analysis relies heavily on the marginal propensity to consume (mpc) to come up with what they describe as a multiplier that predicts that as money is transferred to those with little, or no income, that since the mpc of the poor is, or approaches, one-hundred percent, one-hundred percent of that transfer payment is spent.
But, in and of itself, a transfer payment is not a form of income.
http://www.answers.com/topic/transfer-payment
There are some economists, with degrees, that advocate this type of spending as stimulative. How much real-world experience do you need to falsify this type of thinking?
.
Bruce commented:
What I hate most about Obama and his minions is how stupid they think everyone is. Do they really think people get their unemployment checks and then run out to the Mall of America????
When I was on unemployment in the early 90′s, all my check went toward food, utilities, car payment and house payment. I didn’t buy anything new; I struggled to pay for things I had already bought i.e. my car and house. I wish that WSJ reporter had fired back “just how stupid do you think the American people are?” But they did vote these idiots in, so I guess they have some basis to think the way they do.
