Latest EPA Move Will Shut Down 8% of US Power Generation – Like Wiping Out All Power in Florida & Mississippi

The Obama EPA will likely proceed with new rules that will shut down 8% of all US power generation.

After two and a half years the Team Obama continues to target the American people with a radical job-killing agenda. The latest move by the EPA will push new rules on 26 states. The new regulations will kill thousands of jobs, cost billions of dollars and increase electricity rates for every family.

New EPA rules will force Western coal-fired power plants to install haze-reducing pollution-control equipment at a cost of $1.6 billion a year. Pictured is the Dave Johnston Power Plant in Glenrock, Wyoming. (IBD)

Several other electric plants will be forced to close their doors.
The Wall Street Journal reported:

Obama has the power to delay new rules that will shut down 8% of all U.S. power generation.

Since everyone has a suggestion or three about what President Obama can do to get the economy cooking again, here’s one of ours: Immediately suspend the Environmental Protection Agency’s bid to reorganize the U.S. electricity industry, and impose a moratorium on EPA rules at least until hiring and investment rebound for an extended period.

The EPA is currently pushing an unprecedented rewrite of air-pollution rules in an attempt to shut down a large portion of the coal-fired power fleet. Though these regulations are among the most expensive in the agency’s history, none were demanded by the late Pelosi Congress. They’re all the result of purely bureaucratic discretion under the Clean Air Act, last revised in 1990.

As it happens, those 1990 amendments contain an overlooked proviso that would let Mr. Obama overrule EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson’s agenda. With an executive order, he could exempt all power plants “from compliance with any standard or limitation” for two years, or even longer using rolling two-year periods. All he has to declare is “that the technology to implement such standard is not available and that it is in the national security interests of the United States to do so.”

Both criteria are easily met. Most important, the EPA’s regulatory cascade is a clear and present danger to the reliability and stability of the U.S. power system and grid. The spree affects plants that provide 40% of U.S. baseload capacity in the U.S., and almost half of U.S. net generation. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, which is charged with ensuring the integrity of the power supply, reported this month in a letter to the Senate that 81 gigawatts of generating capacity is “very likely” or “likely” to be subtracted by 2018 amid coal plant retirements and downgrades.

That’s about 8% of all U.S. generating capacity. Merely losing 56 gigawatts—a midrange scenario in line with FERC and industry estimates—is the equivalent of wiping out all power generation for Florida and Mississippi.

    (not really) OT:

    This week’s MUST-READ:

h/t Larwyn’s Linx, Doug [email protected]

The key tactic in every Marxist/Socialist revolution towards the establishment of totalitarian regimes and dictatorships, is to capitalize on or create economic misery and desperation among their constituencies in order to use them as a weapon against their political opposition. When the pain becomes prevalent and demagoguery has sufficiently painted the targets of blame they want their constituencies to attack – they will instigate violence and upheaval by proxy against those they want eliminated.

Mussolini had his Blackshirts, Hitler used his Brownshirts and Mao had his devoted Red Guard as the tools used to stoke street violence. They were devoted groups that incited larger mob actions that opportunists were all-too-happy to join in to inflict death and damage upon the targets these tools directed their rage. Bloodshed and violence then becomes the catalyst for enough of the populace to surrender what little liberty they have left for an iron-fisted political savior to brutally put down the chaos and restore “normalcy”.

This is the template that is taught and always followed by Marxists and the Fabian Socialists who are working tirelessly to ‘transform the world’ into their twisted utopian dream. This blueprint is never deviated from – only enhanced and modified to bring about more subtle approaches so as to deceive the masses of where the Left intends to take them. For example, they no longer have to wait for the perfect conditions to arise, for an opportune moment to establish totalitarian rule as in times past. Today, they can create the actual conditions that are causing the economic collapse that they will capitalize on.

Read it all: that was only the introduction.

that sounds like his plan to jum-start jobs growth…mooslum POS doing what he ahs planned many many years ago…the destruction af america…seems that is the only thing he is good at

Comrade Obama is going to take down the United States to a level where we experience 3rd world conditions as a punishment, a get even if you will for our past successes. Obama HATES. he HATES America and will and is destroying it as fast as he can. He’s not doing this from stupidity of mistake, but from pure malice.

I’ve said it before, when the government gets out of control, the people (corporations et al) need to start ignoring the “leaders” and the agenda driven bureaucratic agencies and perserving their own livelyhoods and welfare.

    States, too.

States need to say to the Federal Government, starting RIGHT NOW:

“F*&K YOU, WE’RE DRILLING. WELCOME, SHELL! WELCOME BP! Create ten thousand new jobs in our state!! Send the military to stop us, we’ll fight back. You won’t destroy our state.”

But no. “State” means nothing anymore. (And when I say that, a million idiot libs think I want SLAVERY, because they’ve been so brainwashed and conditioned to think that whenever anyone mentions the concept of States’ Rights, that they want slavery.)

We HAVE slavery. I am a slave. 52% of America: government leeches, welfare leeches, Union leeches, Hollywood useful idiot stars, Music Industry stars — they are the masters, living like princes and kings.

    I’m sick of it.

#7…You still want Perry after all he has been exposed for? Really? He is one of them! Empty words. Are you, a family member, a friend, better off today then you were three years ago. Perry will continue in the destruction of america as the kenyan fraud is doing.

  • OK, I’m a bit cynical.

Sometime in the next few months, Obama will announce that he’s giving the utilities the 2-year reprieve available in the Clean Air Act.

That way, he get a political boost for being a “good guy” and gets to re-impose after the ’12 election.

  • n.a. palm

Obama (can) overrule EPA……? Wanna bet he will? Odds of that are zero.

The “utilities” are manned by “union workers”.

That has more than something to do with it — that and the probability that their pension funds will be used to finance the upcoming election AND THEN BAILED OUT BY ANOTHER STIMULUS.

In other words, the unions which comprise the majority of the “utilities”, will pay for Obama’s next campaign (as most unions did the last time), and then the taxpayer will MORE THAN reimburse them, meaning we all will have paid for Obama’s next campaign.

Can’t have the Utilities going broke before they (and by “they”, I mean “WE”) can pay for Obama’s campaign, can we?

    So, they are exempt.

I still find it astounding that the mass media has ignored the trend: Obama Destroying American Jobs.

Does anyone remember, OH SO LONG AGO, the auto industry bailout (which was required, as I mentioned, because Union companies are, ah, “negatively profitable”, and because they spend all their members’ pensions on lavish golf courses, resorts, and Democrat campaigns) resulted in the closure of HUNDREDS OF DEALERSHIPS — most of which were owned by Republican donors, and which were more profitable to GM and Chrysler than the DEMOCRAT-OWNED dealerships that were allowed to remain open?

I know, it was YEARS AND YEARS AGO.

Every single decision by this administration has resulted in MORE government, non producing jobs, and MILLIONS FEWER productive, private sector jobs.

The MSM is the devil’s mouth. There can be no question.

These jackals are savaging one group of Americans after another–auto makers and dealerships, California farmers, Gulf Coast oil workers, Northeast fishermen, producers of raw milk, lemonade, and fast food, the Tea Party. At the same time they sieze or tighten their grip on everyone’s health care, student loans, mortgages, foreclosed homes, internet, livestock and energy. Our borders are open and our space agency is closed. Racial and religious hostility have been stoked.
It does seem as if they’re picking a big fight. And they’re sure they can win.

  • republicans need to put a stop to EPA, defund these racials.

In Texas, there have been articles written about this same subject. We live in an area where several coal plants are planning to shutdown. Reports in Texas are predicting black outs by next year because of the new rules. This is just one of many subjects that the MSM will not report, or at least put on the front burner. 2012 can not come soon enough.

Yep. I’m a native Texan and I Own and operate a business in Texas and construction is doing quite well all over the state.

Obama will not put a stop to this latest epa assault on our energy production. He warned us before the election that his policies would cause electric rates to necessarily skyrocket and if you wanted to build a coal fired power plant that you would go bankrupt. He’s just fulfilling his promises to us.

  • Hussein is deconstructing America to turn Americans into obedient peons for the state. His WTF is the reverse of Mao’s GLF.

‘The Great Leap ended in catastrophe, resulting in tens of millions of excess deaths.[2] Estimates of the death toll range from 16.5 to 46 million,[3][4][5] with estimates by demographic specialists ranging from 18 to 32.5 million.[6] Historian Frank Dikötter asserts that “coercion, terror, and systematic violence were the very foundation of the Great Leap Forward” and it “motivated one of the most deadly mass killings of human history.”[7]

The years of the Great Leap Forward in fact saw economic regression, with 1958-61 being the only years between 1953 and 1983 in which China’s economy saw negative growth. Political economist Dwight Perkins argues, “enormous amounts of investment produced only modest increases in production or none at all. … In short, the Great Leap was a very expensive disaster.”[8]’

‘”The chaos caused was on a grand scale, and I take responsibility. Comrades, you must all analyse your own responsibility. If you have to fart, fart. You will feel much better for it.”‘

Yeah Hussein, we’ll fart and feel better.

Exactly. But, hopefully, Americans, the ones who are awake (as in the Tea Party), will fart Dear Leader, his comrades and their odious regulators out of our lives forever. Most of us, who are not the brainwashed and entitled, are not the Chinese.

I want to save money and the planet. We need massive layoff of the poisonous gas coming from most of the Fed’s ABC Depts. Shut them down. EPA? Gone. The air is already cleaner just thinking about it. Think how much better you feel about your children’s future if the private sector took over education. Hmm, hmm, hmm. All those millions of permits and noses. Gone. I can cure what ails us.

  • The day after the EPA bill was passed, most (not all) electricity providers in Texas pulled their quotes for the rest of the month — meaning you could not sign up for new service or a switch of providers until the following month. The rates immediately jumped, before settling a bit. Rates are still up, even though the price of Nat Gas (half of Texas’s electricity comes from Nat Gas) is lower than before the passage.
