In the Republican’s weekly address, Rep. Renee Ellmers of North Carolina said it’s time to reduce regulations, expand domestic energy production and require the government to consider the effect of federal rules on hiring.

Rep. Ellmers pointed out that the stimulus has failed. President Obama promised that the stimulus would keep the unemployment rate below 8%, yet it is currently at 9.7%.

  5. That executive summary is good.

We need to get the government out of the business of picking winners and losers in any given industry, and out of the business of “investing” in unripe technologies. I would limit government research grants to “seed money” — projects that have long-term potential but admittedly will not pay off in a reasonable period of time, and “compassionate” medical research — projects likely to be beneficial for at least a few people, but unlikely to serve as a basis for a profitable business.

The government has no business whatsoever in investing in entire industry segments. That is more efficiently done by the market.

There are, of course, infrastructure projects and strategic capabilities that are properly handled by the Federal government, or at least contracted by it. But we should not maintain any illusions about the government’s ability to handle these matters quickly, cheaply, or in a way that creates more jobs than the private sector would.

  8. Dear Federal Govt and reps, Please go back to being invisible. We don’t want to see or hear from you except a check to the IRS maybe once or so a year and the trip to the post Office. Get out of our lives and let the local govt and we locals handle things. There is the Tenth amendment that frees you, the Federal Govt, from a lot of governing. Please do your jobs and stay out of trouble. No groin photos and no ho’s. Go home to yr wife and kids; While at home, have a job, a career. We the People would like to see a part-time legislature, 120days a year + one 15 day addendum in November. The rest of the time work at something else. We don’t need you to take care of our famiulies. We, the people are willingto risk the vagaries of life, whether pollution, asbestos, or regular cars with metal dash-boards. Please become invisible and butt out of our lives.
    Sincerely, The American People

  9. Just for the record, it is kind of difficult to create wealth if you don’t even know it can be done or that it means redistributing what there is of it to yourself through the magic of a Great Central Gov’t.; and that in the case of Obama and his merry bunch of progressive regressives, being on top means being able to arrange for and control the guest list for the greatest number of latte’ Commie cocktail parties.
