Actresses Hannah Einbinder and Susan Sarandon were taken into custody Thursday outside the United Nations in New York during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the General Assembly.
Jewish Voice for Peace organized the protest, which took place a few blocks from the UN headquarters on Thursday.
Protesters wore matching shirts that read “Fund people not bombs” and carried banners including “Stop Arming Israel” and “End the Genocide.”

Chants captured on video included “Netanyahu, you can’t hide! We charge you with genocide,” “Let Gaza live,” and “Stop arming Israel.”
An NYPD spokesperson said Community Affairs officers warned the crowd to leave.
“They continued to block the intersection. Multiple individuals who didn’t comply were taken into custody,” the spokesperson said, without giving a final headcount.
Reports estimate that roughly 100 people were detained.
Einbinder, the Emmy-winning co-star of HBO’s Hacks, was led away in handcuffs on camera.
In a clip of her being detained, Einbinder shouted, “Free Palestine! Get Netanyahu out of New York!” She could also be heard saying, “No bombs on Lebanon.”

Sarandon, 79, was filmed being cuffed by NYPD officers. She has previously said her advocacy for Palestinians has cost her roles in the film industry. Her talent agency also dropped her in 2023.

Comedian Caleb Hearon, City Council Member Chi Ossé, congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, and WikiLeaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning were also named in some reports as having been detained.

Transgender actress Elliot Page was seen in the crowd holding a banner, but has not been named among those taken in.

It was not immediately clear which of the celebrities were formally charged and which were detained and released.
