Ramstein Air Base Cancels Drag Queen Event For Families

On Wednesday, Ramstein Air Base canceled an event featuring a drag queen story hour for children that was scheduled to celebrate Pride Month.

According to a since-deleted Facebook post, the event was going to be held today and was set to feature drag queen Stacey Teed, a story time for kids at the military base. The event’s cancellation came after service members and lawmakers publicly criticized the planned activity.

“We’re celebrating Pride Month at the Ramstein Library with Drag Queen Storytime!” a screenshot of the event page read. “Be sure to wear your brightest and most colorful outfits!”

Senator Marco Rubio became one of the event’s most prominent opponents, writing a letter last week to Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall to express his disapproval prior to the event’s cancellation.

“I urge you to immediately cancel this politically divisive event, and take appropriate disciplinary action against all involved in allowing this gross abuse of taxpayer funding to place children in a sexualized environment,” Rubio wrote. “These inappropriate events are extremely divisive at home for good reason; in all cases, they place young children in close proximity with adults who are intentionally and explicitly sexualized.”

Rubio expressed his elation to the cancellation in a later post on Twitter.

Before the event’s cancellation, a Ramstein official said that it hadn’t gone through the proper vetting process.
