Dave Chappelle Attacked on Stage at Hollywood Bowl (Video)

Comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage Tuesday night during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles at the Netflix Is a Joke Fest. A man rushed the stage and lunged at Chappelle in an effort to take him down. The attacker did not appear to be armed and Chappelle did not appear to be hurt. The same cannot be said about the attacker who was quickly detained and beaten by security and Chappelle. The attacker was later seen being taken away in a chair by an ambulance crew.

UPDATE: TMZ reports the attacker was armed with a replica handgun with a knife attached.

“Law enforcement tells TMZ, the attacker actually pointed the gun at Chapelle as he rushed him. We’re told the gun was not real, it was a replica of a semi-automatic. It also weirdly had a knife attached to the gun…We’re told Dave was ok but the attacker was injured and taken by stretcher to an ambulance. We’re told he’s currently in the hospital. LAPD sources tell us, the man was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.”

Chris Rock, who was attacked on stage by Will Smith at the Academy Awards this past March had performed earlier and joked with Chappelle he thought the attacker was Will Smith.

The attacker’s arm appeared to be dislocated.

BuzzFeed’s Brianna Sacks was at the show and tweeted about the attack.

“Just came out of the Hollywood Bowl where a man charged and tackled Dave Chapelle on stage and got his ass kicked by at least 10 people. LAPD and LAFD are now loading him into an ambulance…The show was just ending when the man hopped onto stage and ran at Chapelle, form tackling him to the ground. The comedian had literally just said he now has more security because of all the uproar from his jokes about the Trans community…Security et al rushed and started punching and kicking the shit out of Chapelle’s attacker. He was just about to bring on Talib Kweli and Mos Def for the encode and we in the crowd were like what the fuck is going on. Chapelle kept on while the guy was getting beat in the back… Sheer chaos. Then Jamie Foxx comes out in a cowboy hat, looking absolutely shocked, and Chapelle makes a joke about stomping the guy, who is still getting beat up. kweli and Mos Def do their set while LAPD cruisers start arriving behind the stage. Fucking wild”

“What was also wild was that Chris Rock performed at the #NetflixIsAJoke Chapelle show (he was fantastic) and joked about what happened to him. After Chapelle got attacked, he cam on stage and they joked that it was Will Smith…While the attacker was getting beat up, Chapelle made a joke about him probably being a Trans man”

Video of the aftermath with Chappelle calling other comedians who performed earlier on stage and commenting about the attack. Chappelle said he joined in on the beatdown of his attacker.
