Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Instagram on Monday to announce that she has never seen a garbage disposal before and ask if they are environmentally sound.
The freshman representative said that her DC apartment is “bougie” and has “things she has never seen before” referencing the garbage disposal — which she described as “terrifying.”
“OK everyone I need your help because I just moved into this apartment a few months ago and I just flipped a switch and it made that noise and it scared the daylights out of me,” Ocasio-Cortez said in an Instagram video.
“This DC apartment is bougie and has things I’ve never seen before. Like what is a garbage disposal really for? Is it better or worse than throwing something in the garbage? More importantly why is it so loud and yelling at me?” Ocasio-Cortez asked.
While her video was ridiculous and fitting with her signature ditzy act, New York had actually banned garbage disposals until 1997 because they were concerned that food waste would over burden the water-treatment systems. It is because of the ban that most apartments in the city do not have them installed.
Ocasio-Cortez responded to commentators urging her to reach in by joking that they are just Republicans trying to test her health insurance.
“All you people telling me to reach in and grab whatever’s there are just Republicans trying to test my health insurance,” she said. “I’m onto you.”
