Trump Impeachment Comments Land Rep. Justin Amash a ‘MAGA’ Primary Challenger

Republican Michigan State Rep. Jim Lower has announced that he will be mounting a primary challenge against Rep. Justin Amash over his comments about impeaching President Donald Trump.

Amash called for the impeachment of President Trump on Saturday, becoming the first GOP congressman or senator to do so.

On Monday, Lower announced that he will be sitting out the race for his third term in the state senate and will instead be running for the 3rd Congressional District seat that Amash has held since 2011.

Lower, who is staunchly pro-Trump, said that he had been planning to run for the seat eventually, but decided now is the right time after Amash’s tweets about impeaching the president.

“Congressman Justin Amash tweets yesterday calling for President Trump’s impeachment show how out of touch he is with the truth and how out of touch he is with people he represents,” Lower said, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press. “He must be replaced and I am going to do it.”

Last month Justin Amash expressed his openness to running against President Trump in 2020 as the Libertarian Party candidate.

Trump roasted the congressman on Twitter on Sunday, saying that he is a “a total lightweight who opposes me and some of our great Republican ideas and policies just for the sake of getting his name out there through controversy.”

“If he actually read the biased Mueller Report, ‘composed’ by 18 Angry Dems who hated Trump,” the tweets continued, “he would see that it was nevertheless strong on NO COLLUSION and, ultimately, NO OBSTRUCTION…Anyway, how do you Obstruct when there is no crime and, in fact, the crimes were committed by the other side? Justin is a loser who sadly plays right into our opponents hands!”
