Twice failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton now wants to be CEO of Facebook.
The scandal plagued former secretary of state said if there were any company should would run it would be Facebook, the “biggest news platform in the world” because of the site’s capacity for political influence.
“If you could be a CEO of any company right now, what would you choose and why?” Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey asked after Clinton was honored with an academic award from Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute.
“Facebook. It’s the biggest news platform in the world,” Clinton continued. “Most people in our country get their news, true or not, from Facebook,”Clinton responded. “We can listen to really brilliant, experienced writers like David Ignatius and try to keep up with the news,” Clinton said. “But most people in our country get their news, true or not, from Facebook.”
Speaking to an audience at Harvard University before receiving the Radcliffe Medal on May 25, Clinton praised the social media giant’s efforts to limit the reach of conservative and anti-establishment news sources.
“Facebook is trying to take on some of the unexpected consequences of their business model, and I for one hope they get it right because it really is critical to our democracy that people get accurate information on which to make decisions,” she continued.
The former 2016 Democratic presidential nominee also blasted Fox News and Sinclair Broadcasting for delivering “delivering propaganda.”
“It’s not just Fox, it’s now Sinclair. They are essentially delivering propaganda. … We need more outlets for reliable information,” Clinton said in her acceptance speech. “Waging a war on the rule of law and a free press, delegitimizing elections, perpetuating corruption, rejecting the idea that our leaders should be public servants, undermining our national unity, and attacking truth and reason — these should alarm us all, whether we’re Republicans, Democrats, independents, vegetarians, whoever we might be,”
The results of the social network’s recent crusade against “fake news ”show that the mainstream media’s reach on the platform has soared, while conservative media outlets have drastically fallen.
“Attempting to erase the line between fact and fiction, truth and an alternative reality, is a core feature of authoritarianism. The goal is to make us question logic and reason and sow mistrust toward exactly the people I think we need to rely on: our leaders, the press, experts who seek to guide public policy based on evidence, ultimately, ourselves,” Clinton added. “It means calling out actual fake news when we see it, and supporting brave journalism and reporting. And yes, subscribing to a newspaper. Remember those?”
Clinton’s vision of herself as the honcho of Facebook was mocked on social media, as hundreds called on her to be thrown in jail.
