Missouri Governor Jay Nixon says Missouri’s sales and property tax rates are lower in Missouri than they are in Texas. Houston sales tax rate is 8.25% In 2012 St. Louis has 10th highest local sales tax rate in the country. Right now City of Saint Louis sales tax is 8.491% and will be going up to almost 10% after Prop P passed to help pay for Federal land improvements.(Gateway Arch) All in all sales taxes in St. Louis relentlessly on the rise.

(KTVI)Governor Jay Nixon continues to ask voters to support his veto of Missouri House Bill 253.
Nixon stopped at Mineral Area College in Park Hills on Thursday and addressed a room filled with concerned educators.
The governor told his audience that he has supported tax cuts before but feels HB 253 is flawed and would be devastating for public education.
Republican leaders have argued that by reducing certain taxes, more revenue will be generated. The bill also provides triggers that republicans argue would prevent drastic cuts from happening.
A number of area superintendents, school board member and other educators have concerns over how much money each district will lose. Some estimate that HB 253 would cut their budgets by more than one million dollars each year.
Texas governor Rick Perry is now involved in the debate. His is trying to use Nixon’s veto as an argument for why businesses should leave Missouri for Texas.
He is fronting television and radio spots that are airing in the St. Louis. The ads tout job grown in Texas and attributes it to lower taxes. Perry also plans on a Missouri visit next week.
