Video: Donald Trump Calls to Thank Cleveland Police Chief and Officers for Keeping RNC Convention Safe

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump called Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams on Friday to thank him for keeping the Republican National Convention held this week in Cleveland safe.

The call came as Williams was attending a media availability with bike patrol officers outside the Quicken Loans Arena where the convention was held. Williams put Trump on speaker so he could speak to the approximately fifty officers. The officers can be seen in video tightly surrounding the chief to hear Trump speak. Afterward, many of the officers can be seen turning away with broad smiles on their faces.

Trump:

“I just called the chief to say what a great job he did. He’s more famous than I am because he’s getting more television time than I did (laughter). He has done and you people have done an unbelievable job. They’re talking about it all over the country. And ‘ll tell you what I wouldn’t want to be Philadelphia right now because they can’t match you. No matter what happens, they can’t match. So you should all be very, very proud of yourselves and Calvin has been amazing. So I just want to thank all of you for the great job you’ve done (officers cheer, “Thank you, sir!”). Good luck.”

Cleveland.com posted a report and video of Chief Williams speaking about the phone call with Trump.

“He just wanted to thank us, the Cleveland Division of Police and law enforcement here, for a nice safe week for everybody,” Williams said. “That it wasn’t like people predicted. Even not like he predicted.”

…Williams said the call meant a lot, especially for the recognition police officers got for a convention that resulted in relatively few arrests and problems.

“Anytime people recognize law enforcement and say that they appreciate us, it’s a good thing,” the chief said.”
