In the video, Nehlen focuses like a laser on Paul Ryan’s blatant, mercenary championing of crony international trade agreements, in particular, fast-track Trade Promotion Authority for the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership, frequently described as NAFTA on steroids. The video spot powerfully underscores the devastation that such deals have already inflicted on manufacturing, jobs, and families in Wisconsin’s 1st District. Nowhere is the failure more evident—or troubling—than in Ryan’s hometown of Janesville, where much of the footage was shot.
It’s a serious gauntlet Nehlen’s message throws down for Ryan, and the spot will undoubtedly resonate for viewers nationwide who’ve been betrayed by the DC-establishment’s ongoing sellout of American industry and workers. That doesn’t mean Nehlen isn’t having a little fun into the bargain.
“Mr. Speaker, you championed this trade deal. Why don’t you come back to Wisconsin and debate me—man-to-man, face-to-face—on the realities of TPP. And if you don’t want to debate me, maybe we can arm wrestle,” says Nehlen with a twinkle in his eye, just before walking off-camera toward the end of the video. The pointed jab references workout photos of Ryan, published during the 2012 election cycle.
“It’s time to shed light on the truth of what Paul Ryan has been doing,” said Nehlen in discussing the video spot. “He’s sold his congressional vote. He’s sold out Wisconsin’s 1st District. He’s continuing to find new ways to sell out Americans nationwide. Wads of campaign cash have clearly become more important to him than principles and people. This video is part of a deliberate plan to expose that reality in a way that can no longer be ignored.”
