FLASHBACK: Jimmy Carter Banned Iranians from US, Deported Iranian Students During Hostage Crisis

The liberal media and Republican party elites erupted today after Donald Trump announced his plan to ban Muslim immigrants from the US until the government can assure it is safe to do so.

But Democrat Jimmy Carter did the same thing, and much more during the Iranian hostage crisis.
carter iran khomeini

What a horrible Islamophobe.
Daniel Greenfield at Frontpage reported:

During the Iranian hostage crisis, Carter issued a number of orders to put pressure on Iran. Among these, Iranians were banned from entering the United States unless they oppose the Shiite Islamist regime or had a medical emergency.

Here’s Jimmy “Hitler” Carter saying it back in 1980.

Fourth, the Secretary of Treasury [State] and the Attorney General will invalidate all visas issued to Iranian citizens for future entry into the United States, effective today. We will not reissue visas, nor will we issue new visas, except for compelling and proven humanitarian reasons or where the national interest of our own country requires. This directive will be interpreted very strictly.

Apparently barring people from a terrorist country is not against “our values” after all. It may even be “who we are”. Either that or Carter was a racist monster just like Trump.

Meanwhile here’s how the Iranian students in the US were treated.

Carter orders 50,000 Iranian students in US to report to immigration office with view to deporting those in violation of their visas. On 27 December 1979, US appeals court allows deportation of Iranian students found in violation.

well, it is difficult to for me to compare Carter and Trump who obviously feel and felt the same way about radicals in America killing us but on this one I do believe it is quite similar.

Whoa, did I just say that? Shocks me, too.

Great Call. this is why memory is so-o important.
that’s why rule #1 in every communist revolution for the last 100 years has been to get rid of the old people, because they remember.

There go all those arguments that it can’t be done, never been done, unconstitutional, blah, blah. This should jog memories or inform the young products of public school ed that Americans have been attacked by Muslims even prior to 9/11.

  • Ivyredneck

Patty, let’s look at the big picture here, which is that our country has gone so far off track that even what the hapless Jimmy Carter thought was perfectly reasonable in 1980 is today not even allowed for discussion by our politicians and media. Compared to the Obama era, Carter’s America was a golden age. Today the only leader left who represents real Americans is Trump.

So, well lefties call Carter Hitler? Nah. That’s the uniparty designed false attack point that Jacobus and others created just for Trump weeks ago, when the WOW attack failed.

And how’s The Left and media gonna call pro-Palestinian, rabidly anti-Israel Carter an Islamaphobe for prudently restricting immigration for a time for American safety?

Foolish progressives have grown so closed minded and so accustomed to rewriting history as it happens with their own demented and delusional lies that they have forgotten that history, real history, exists outside their little gated group think communities.

Liberalism truly is a mental disorder and it is not only time for honest diagnosis but also successful treatment. Patients have been running the asylum for too long. It is time to stand up to the crybullies with straight up truth.

Stripping Islam of its religious disguise, exposing it for the traitorous war plan to destroy individual liberty that it is must happen now. All who subscribe to, aid and abet this treacherous and devious arrest to undermine our society and to replace it with its own slavery MUST be expelled from these borders.

We have no choice if we want to keep our way of life. Islam and individual liberty are not compatible and cannot live mixed and peace be the result. There will be endless conflict until one or the other wins out.

I choose to fight for individual liberty to be the winner, the survivor, in that conflict. Liberal leftist Democrats want to aid and abet islam? So be it. Those traitors can be expelled right along with the rest of them.

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.” Winston Churchill

Ignore the oddly invested lefty expat. She’s not addressing what Trump’s actual proposal is. I doubt she actually cares that it’s a pause in Muslim immigration. She’s using that classic leftie spin trying to conflate topics, such as legal immigrants already residing in America with permission granted by our govt, illegal aliens, and foreigners trying to enter the U.S. through our assorted immigration programs, incl visas, which is Trump’s focus. Both Congress and the President have the authority to implement exactly what Trump’s suggested. It’s not unconstitutional. Some just believe the propaganda being pushed that he’s “banning Muslims’ or it’s a “Muslim travel ban”, and some are working to push the prop.

Since you seem to love the Muslims so much and vehemently try to defend their “none existent right” to immigrate to the US, why don’t you spend your time encouraging your own country, Australia, which has the toughest immigration laws in the world, to change their laws and invite these Jihads into your neighborhoods. Once you’ve done that and they are committing terrorists acts in your country, then maybe you will have earned the “right” to tell us how to run our country. Muslim troll.

  • OldSailor

Neither does it extend a “constitutional right” to come to this country. There’s also a little old bit of law dating from the 1798 Adams administration called the Alien and Sedition Acts as well as the Immigration Act and the Enemy Aliens Act. The Alien Enemies Act remains in effect as 50 USC Sections 21–24 which provide Congress AND the President with the authority to do exactly what Trump is proposing and what Carter did do.

The act has been used several times in the past, most extensively by FDR during WWII, not only to sequester those of Japanese descent but also against German and Italian immigrants, limiting their movements or deporting them.

Wikipedia has a pretty good writeup, I recommend it to you guys:

Dawn’s an atheist, anti-Christian, now apologist for Islam per her blog and comments. Interestingly, 2 years ago, in response to Sweden’s immigration ban, she said a country has a right to decide who enters and restricting that to persons of benefit to the country. Then she moved to Saudi Arabia, wore traditional Islamic garb “out of respect”, then began arguing Muslim modesty laws are fine, France shouldn’t ban the hijab, Syrian refugees have a right to enter, etc. She’s admitted in her FB comments she had no idea ISIS was attempting to enter the U.S. through our immigration programs. She says she’s a teacher, bouncing from country to country, now in Aus. Given jihadi problems in Aus, I’m guessing they surveil for suspicious persons.

  • Brett Favre

so then we should just ban travel from all muslim countries by name, just like carter did with iran. Just spell out the countries run by sharia

  • Guest

Here’s the awesome thing: Trump has made people ponder in far more depth national security, immigration, illegal aliens, and the intersect of those. If some continue to argue that in spite of Carter and Obama clearly pausing immigration for Iranians and Iraqis due to security concerns, Trump’s proposal can’t happen for Muslim immigration, the next logical step in the art of this deal is, ok, let’s pause immigration as a whole while we assess, secure, deport, rewrite, develop. Art of the Deal.

  • OldSailor

It’s been done in the past, the last time during the mid-20th Century for a generation to allow time for a mass of (legal) immigrants to assimilate.

Agree, we need to stop it again for a generation at least to allow time for assimilation and to deport every illegal caught by law enforcement for whatever additional criminal acts they’ve committed after serving their prison sentences or sent home in a small wooden box after execution.

No, I’m not a nice guy even though normally I try to act like one.

History is what they say it was don’t you know. Carter was a bigoted moron that drove the country into gas lines miles long. Allowed the Mullas to take over Iran and take 446 hostages for the whole last days of his term. The day Reagan was elected they were released. He stopped entry of Iranians, refused to send olympics team to compete. Anyone that lived under Carter knows how bad he was, and yet today, under the Kenyan, it’s worse by a factor of 10.

  • dave0987

Bottom line: The overwhelming vast majority of Muslims are Middle Eastern, and so are easily visually identifiable as Muslims, and the overwhelming vast majority of terrorists are Muslims. It’s clear many of those commenting with objections haven’t read this article or the linked original, but are just responding to the title blindly. At least lefties have shifted their arguments as they’re prone to do, now that they’re aware other presidents limited and temporary halted immigration for some, including requiring them to denounce an ideology. To cover it again, no Trump isn’t “banning a religion” and in fact both Congress and the Prez have the ability to set any immigration criteria they deem necessary, as well as to bar “any class of aliens” including Muslims. Even a few pseudo conservatives are getting this wrong: what’s he’s proposed is constitutional, and no it doesn’t violate the First Amendment. It neither establishes a religion nor prohibits the free exercise thereof. Our Constitution cannot grant someone in Saudi Arabia religious freedom, nor can it inhibit it – if a Muslim Saudi seeks entry, we absolutely can say no based on their faith. He’s talking about foreigners outside the US attempting to enter through our immigration process. We can use any criteria we see fit to decide who can immigrate, if any. Even the NYT acknowledges it’s constitutional, as multiple conservatives have. (It is funny how lefties called Trump racist when Muslim is not a race, but won’t say the same abt Carter targeting a nationality.) The fact is, Obama has said we are at war with Islamic State, they plan to attack here, exploited the migrant surge before the Paris attacks, and are trying to enter via our immigration system, just as the CA jihadis/families did. Carter went even further than Trump. And if he’d suggested barring Pakistanis, the lefties would be just as frenzied, as they were when barring Syrian refugees was brought up.

  • Aslan’s Girl

I love that we can tell the left that Trump is no worse than their heroes FDR and Carter. And in fact Trump is proposing much less than what FDR did. LOL.

  • Guest

And Obama. He paused Iraqi immigration for 6 months in 2011, precisely because terrorists had infiltrated through the refugee program. There are links below about it. Hoping more people point that out. There’s nothing unprecedented or unconstitutional abt restricting immigration.

And those distinction are irrelevant. Read the rest of the comments and links below. That it was after an attack against Americans only strengthens the comparison, as does the fact that Carter required a denunciation of ideology. It’s funny how the arguments against it are now down to small parsing.

  • Guest

You didn’t read, did ya? So, you’re ok with blocking certain nationalities from entering? Your attempt at feigned moral and intellectual superiority (while deploying logical fallacies) aside, there is precedent for both a pause and a limitation on immigration, it is legal, it is constitutional, it isn’t “racist” as some inexplicably claimed. See Nolte’s 9 Things article or Jenks article yesterday at Breitbart or Malkin’s article today regarding prudence. Feel free to read CNN’s report on GWU’s study showing an unprecedented level of support for Islamic State released the same day as the Islamic State attack in the Christmas Party, or the Pew Poll showing 63 Million Muslims support Islamic State.

  • oi812

You can block people from nations but you can not block people of a certain religion. Do you really think they will admit they are Muslim when asked? Trump should have said stop ALL immigration until we get a handle on it but he spoke, AGAIN without thinking things all the way through. For a guy who boast daily how smart he is he can sure say some dumb things. Now the talk is about him and not the problem.

  • Guest

LOL, you edited your post to add an argument and a credential; you work in marketing.

  • Guest

Yes you can, just as you can extend certain immigration priorities to refugee visas according to religion. Look it up. And ironic you’d propose no immigration given your pro-amnesty stance.

  • KauaiGoneGin

Muslims have no nationalistic identity such as Syrian, Iraqi, or Egyptia and much less Dutch, French, British and certainly American. They are Muslim first and their loyalty is to Islam. It unites them across borders they don’t recognize anyway. The whole world is or will be part of one caliphate in which borders are meaningless. Whether ISIS, Boko haram, al Qaeda, Hamas, et al they claim a terror act for it is ultimately for Islam.

  • Linda Harward

He did not put it as well as he could have. I would have said ban ALL immigration for 7-10 years, until our government demonstrates it can and will secure the borders, and establish strict criteria for entrance to this country. This is not a new strategy. It was what countries did to protect its citizens. Of course, that was before this age of Political Correctness and corrupt media.
The left, meaning the Democrats and the mainstream Media, believe that WAR is due to nationalism and xenophobia, capitalism and income inequality. Therefore, if they can just eliminate borders, encourage free movement and open immigration, etc (the policies they’ve put in place), there will be no countries to fight each other! Everyone will live together in peace and harmony, under Sharia Law. I’m beginning to think this is the LeftS end game. Just think. The left hates freedom for anyone other than them, because people are really just too stupid to know what is good for them. Islam dictates every aspect of your life, and it’s not a Happy life. It’s actually no wonder so many are so willing to commit suicide. It’s to escape Islam.

  • aubie

Since your supposed to be a teacher, perhaps you should break out a dictionary and look up the definition of Jihad, not what your muslim friends have taught you and not what you wrote, which is a play on words. According to Oxford the definition of Jihad is: a war or struggle against unbelievers. Do you see the key difference in the real definition and what you wrote, that difference is the two words: AGAINST UNBELIEVERS. And since I doubt you know the meaning of the suffix ist, that would mean they are a participant in the Jihad. Since the overwhelming majority of American citizens are not muslims and since the Koran requires all muslims (radical or moderate) to follow the teachings written in the book, they are by definition ALL JIHADISTS. What part of a WAR or struggle against UNBELIEVERS do you not understand or chose to deny. As far as you stating you are from the US, your screen name from your Facebook post SAID you were from Australia when you posted. Frankly, I really don’t care where you reside. As far as the US only admitting 2290 refugees, that is already 2290 to many.

Here is number eight US Code 1182, inadmissible aliens. This law was written in 1952. It was passed by a Democrat-controlled Congress, House and Senate, and signed by a Democrat president.

Whenever the president finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, the president may, by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”

U.S.Appeals Court Approves Iranian Student Deportation

By Joseph D. Whitaker, Art Harris and Washington Post Staff Writers; Staff writer Phil McCombs also contributed to this story.December 28, 1979
The U.S. Court of Appeals gave the go-ahead yesterday to President Carter’s crackdown on Iranian students in the United States and overruled a lower court decision that had prohibited the government from deporting any of the students.

The appeals court decision held that the crackdown, ordered by President Carter on Nov. 10, was a legitimate exercise of the president’s constitutional power to conduct foreign affairs without interference from the courts.

“The present controversy involving Iranian students in the United States lies in the field of our country’s foreign affairs and implicates matters over which the president has direct constitutional authority,” the three-judge appeals court panel said.

Hey kids, sorry to stop the party, but this article is BS. Carter issued a visa crackdown on a country, not a religion or a race. The US has done the same with Cuba, with the USSR, with China and on and on; visa restrictions against citizens of a country you have a beef with is normal diplomatic tactics. Issuing a blanket ban on a religion or a race, regardless of citizenship (even if they’re US citizens) is simply not legal. OK, thanks. Back to your bubble.

Wrong. Entirely legal. Read laws, articles linked and comments below.

Entirely constitutional. The U.S. Is a sovereign nation able to set its own immigration standard and limits. International law had no authority over it. See laws and comments below. They already screen religion for refugee visas, for example.

Do not forget the eight dead Americans who died in the helocoper rescue mission crash

EDIT: “Most of the attention focused on the 25th anniversary of the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. But another sad day in U.S. history was remembered at the Tomb of the Unknowns on April 25, the 20th anniversary of Desert One.

Eight Americans were killed April 25, 1980, in the botched attempt to rescue 53 U.S. hostages who were being held by Iranian radicals at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

President Jimmy Carter had ordered the rescue attempt after six months of frustration over Iran’s refusal to release the hostages. The operation, named Eagle Claw, was not a simple one.

Helicopters flying from a carrier in the Persian Gulf were to ferry Delta Force commandos to a location outside Tehran from which the rescue would be launched. First the helicopters would have to rendezvous for refueling with C-130s flying from a base in Oman at a spot in Iran labeled Desert One.

A swirling sandstorm and mechanical problems forced two helicopters to drop out. As the forces gathered at Desert One, a third helicopter developed a hydraulic leak. Deciding he no longer had the force needed to succeed, the commander, Army Colonel Charles Beckwith, scrubbed the mission.

Matters turned disastrous shortly after that when one of the helicopters collided with a C-130 transport plane loaded with fuel. Eight men died in the resulting fireball. The rest escaped, but the mission’s failure spelled doom for the Carter administration and forced the military to rethink how it conducted joint operations…”

Every time in hear ayahtollah I think of the jerkwads who tipped his coffin over and dropped him on the Tehran dirt. What a deserved way to go out.

  • Rebellivesmatter

    Excellent! That will leave a mark . . .

  • Rebellivesmatter

I think you meant multiply but who needs to speak coherently? It the thought that counts right? That’s how the left operates.

  • MA is Life

Speaking of coherently maybe you meant “It’s” and not “It” but who’s being a spellcheck whore anyway.

To those that thinks Muslims are a religion you are the uninformed voters that put those people into office that have created this disaster. Muslims are a race not a religion, no one suggested a religion be “banned” and it was not suggested that this “ban” be forever. Would you support him designating certain countries like Carter targeted Iran? Obviously something needs to be done unless you are wearing a pair of those rose colored glasses Obama and Hillary wear.

  • BarryAldridge

He cancelled Iranian visas, he didn’t ban all Muslims.

  • BarryAldridge

President Carter cancelled Iranian visas, he didn’t ban all Muslims.

  • Jeff

It is true that Carter did not let Iranians into the country, key point is he denied entry due to nationality not
religion. There is a bid difference here…

Can we keep the refugee ISIS terrorists out of America with the current Liberals in charge of most major cities?

Carter started the terrorist debacle by not sending troops in to take out the hijackers of an airline, this set the stage for 911 in latter years.

Qualcomm president support Camp pendleton civilian international airport?

The Qualcomm president a very big OBAMA supporter and a bunch of
Liberal progressive type supporters would want civilian access to Camp
Pendleton for an international airport; what could go wrong there?

You have Liberals and politicians that want to reduce the
military down to president Carter war footprint standards, Marines
giving up the only peace of land that keeps stinking Los Angeles and
criminal gangs from turning San Diego into a cesspool like Los Angeles.

The Obama Muslim government could not vett their own Muslim kind, a
religion of peace in San Bernardino a Fast & Furious debacle. Camp
Pendleton would be another major Muslim terrorist prize target.

If the Marines just give up a little bit of land now, then latter,
Liberals would say you Marines need to go, we want more hotels and strip
malls for homeless to pee on.

This is the last major West coast military base that secures our American
freedoms, hell no, you Liberals need to go out of California! Go to pot
    smoking Seattle!

  • Prontojim

You did know that this was directed at Iran, a nation that had cut diplomatic ties with our country & was holding many hostages. Also, there were condition under which Iranians could come to the US. Also, the student’s visas were reviewed for being current & legal. If not, then they were deported for being in violation of the visa. Otherwise they were able to stay and continue their education. Please read about the situation before you get going with the ‘libtard’stuff. Thanks.

  • Prontojim

This was not directed at a religion. Iran, a nation that had cut diplomatic ties with our country & was holding many hostages. Also, there were condition under which Iranians could come to the US. Also, the student’s visas were reviewed for being current & legal. If not, then they were deported for being in violation of the visa. Otherwise they were able to stay and continue their education. Please read about the situation before you start saying it was the same. Thanks

Religion. was not the specific issue. Iran, a nation that had cut diplomatic ties with our country & was holding many hostages. Do you often confuse name calling with political savvy? And by the way, I’m not a liberal. Just someone who thinks people who can do nothing but call other people names really ought to stop showing off their ignorance.

  • Stuck_in_Ca

I didn’t call you a libtard, I called Prontojim a libtard. But defending a libtard for being a libtard makes you a libtard, so yeah, you are.

  • Mark David Dietz

I didn’t say you called me names. I said you seem to have confused intelligent thought with name-calling. And you’ve done a fine job of proving me right.

Seriously, think about this for a second. How does calling someone a libtard have any meaning? The other side uses the equally ludicrous repugnican. Basically both are useless comments from people who do not want to be bothered to think.

And I’m not sure what led you to think I was defending someone. None of my language even remotely suggests I was defending someone. No, in all honesty, I was simply attacking you for thinking a one word comment of mindless name-calling was of any value.

I now see, because you pointed it out to me, that your action was even less individually motivated than I at first thought it to be. Prontojim tells you not to call him a libtard, and the only thing you can think to do is call him a libtard. Rather Pavlovian…

Your turn. See if you can avoid name calling. Pavlov tells me that with the suggestion in front of you, you will not be able to do anything but call me names. Let’s see if you have the individuality to prove Pavlov wrong.

  • Stuck_in_Ca

Arguing with a libtard is like arguing with a brick that fell off an insane asylum. Identifying their libtardedness let’s them know I’ve reached the point I will no longer entertain their idiocy.

  • Mark David Dietz

Damn! Pavlov wins. And you’ve proven that you will salivate at the sound of a whistle.

  • Stuck_in_Ca

    Libtard. See above.
