Reality Bites: So Much for Those 3,000% Savings – Obamacare Will Cost US Families $20,000 Per Year

Back in March 2010 Barack Obama told supporters that with Obamacare their premiums would decrease by 3,000%.
(Yes, he really said that.)

And they bought it.

Now we find that under Obamacare the cheapest health insurance plan available will cost a family $20,000 for the year.
CNS News reported:

In a final regulation issued Wednesday, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) assumed that under Obamacare the cheapest health insurance plan available in 2016 for a family will cost $20,000 for the year.

Under Obamacare, Americans will be required to buy health insurance or pay a penalty to the IRS.

The IRS’s assumption that the cheapest plan for a family will cost $20,000 per year is found in examples the IRS gives to help people understand how to calculate the penalty they will need to pay the government if they do not buy a mandated health plan.

The examples point to families of four and families of five, both of which the IRS expects in its assumptions to pay a minimum of $20,000 per year for a bronze plan.

“The annual national average bronze plan premium for a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children) is $20,000,” the regulation says.

Bronze will be the lowest tier health-insurance plan available under Obamacare–after Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Under the law, the penalty for not buying health insurance is supposed to be capped at either the annual average Bronze premium, 2.5 percent of taxable income, or $2,085.00 per family in 2016.

So much for those proposed savings.

  • Stella Baskomb

This tells me the actual insurance premium is $2,085 per year.

    Here’s why.

You don’t have to buy Obamacare until you need it to pay for an accident or disease. That’s because, no matter what the condition of your health, they can’t turn you down. So in reality you are always “covered” when you actually need coverage.

If you do this, you won’t pay the Obamacare premium, you’ll pay the “tax” instead.

So the tax in effect becomes your premium.

And you’ll save the difference – almost 18,000 a year.

  • Granny

So, what are you going to do? Lay out $20K for “health insurance” or play the odds that your actual medical care is going to cost you FAR less every year. . . .

Luckily, the “law” was written so that these people are not eligible for the subsidized insurance but also cannot be taxed by the IRS for not having insurance.

    LOL

  • Bill

The article doesn’t say what comparable health insurance plan accepting those with pre-existing conditions available BEFORE Obamacare would cost. $20,000 for a whole family isn’t bad.

#12 – I can tell you about what it costs as my BIL has had to pay for everything but his own personal insurance for years. His family premium runs about $120 a week, which is a whole lot less than $20K.

You may think he is paying for everything, but it is obviously subsidized by the company. The average cost for a family policy is over $15K. Ergo, the company is kicking in about a third of the difference between employee and family coverage.

HR3590 has more than 2000 pages but here is a summary, only 49 pages…..

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:HR03590:@@@D&summ2=3&;

There were 18 million people without healthcare insurance but Obamacare transforms the entire national health care system and affects all residents of the U.S., not just the 18 million.

In the HR3590 summary, the words “Requires the Secretary” (of HHS) appear 98 times and “Directs the Secretary” appears 64 times. “Authorizes the Secretary” appears 30 times. The law gives a tremendous amount of power to one individual, Kathleen Sebelius, who was NOT elected by We, the People, and who “serves only at the will of the President”.

The IRS may need as many as 16,000 additional auditors, agents and other employees to investigate and collect billions in new taxes from Americans. The government could have just expanded Medicaid to provide healthcare to the 18 million people and ask taxpayers to pay 1 to 2% more on their income tax to fund it. There is a great need for health care and I believe most Americans would have been willing to this tax. Instead we have a humongous mishmash of rules and regulations and taxations that intrude and affect every aspect of our lives.

After reading this information it appears that the Affordable Health Care Act is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The good stuff, coverage for children under 26 years old and pre-existing coverage were initiated first. Then the heavy fines and taxations and mandates will take effect in 2013 or later, after the November election of course.

The Obama Administration has already handed out 111 Obamacare waivers to U.S. companies. Unfortunately, if you’re a small business or don’t have connections you can’t get a waiver for your company. And there are some select groups who are exempt (Prisoners, illegal aliens, and foreign nationals, Amish, Mennonites, Scientologists and some Muslims). I think that Issuing waivers and exemptions to certain groups of people provides unequal treatment under the law. All laws should apply to all people. It is for this reason that this law violates the Constitution and should be thrown out. Just my opinion.

  • wsr3193

If you think Obozocare is expensive now, just wait until it is free.

  • Highlander

There’s one point that everyone seems to be missing …

When people refuse to pay the $20,000 premium, and get hit with the penalty, they STILL get their health care. And who pays for it? The people who ARE paying for it. Until we know how many people are going to get waivers, or simply refuse to buy the insurance, we won’t know just how bad this is going to be, but rest assured, it’s not going to be pretty…. at least not for the responsible people among us.

I thought the whole idea was to force the freeloaders into the health care system and make everyone start paying their fair share of our health care costs, but from what I can tell, we’re going to be right back where we started, with the responsible people picking up the tab for the millions of parasitic losers who want a free ride. Why am I not surprised though? We have a President who has declared open season on the “rich”, and admittedly seeks to “redistribute” America’s wealth. It only stands to reason that we would be expected to pay more than our fair share…

It seems that the same hard working Americans who have been saddled with the cost of the nation’s health care for decades are now are going to be asked to pay even more, and why we’re putting up with this is beyond me, because it’s UNCONSTITUTIONAL. We should ALL just refuse to pay ANYTHING, and force this issue back to the table …

Union Leaders’ Epiphany Leaves Them Scrambling:
Wait, Obamacare Is Going to Drive up Our Costs?

[“I heard him say, ‘If you like your health plan, you can keep it,’”
said John Wilhelm, chairman of Unite Here Health, the insurance plan
for 260,000 union workers. “If I’m wrong, and the president does not
intend to keep his word, I would have severe second thoughts about
    the law.”

Why? Why? Why didn’t anyone tell these leaders
about the costs associated with “Obamacare”?

“It seems someone finally noticed that mandating benefits and imposing
regulations has a tendency to … increase costs,” Doug Bandow writes
for the American Spectator. “Increases which workers are stuck paying.
Who would have imagined such a result? It’s not like anyone warned
    them, right?”]

#10 – Stella … see my comment above. Yes, freeloaders will “SAVE” 18K per year by not buying the insurance, and the rest of us will PAY it for them.

And Granny, I don’t know where you’re getting your information, but I can ASSURE you that anyone who walks into a medical center will be treated, regardless of whether they bought the insurance or not, and that includes illegal aliens…

My buddies and I have a plan. We’re going to just skip that whole “buying insurance” thing. Some of us will qualify for exemptions because we don’t report our dope dealing income or can’t hold a job, and some of us will just pay the small penalty, but none of us really has any intention of EVER paying our fair share, because we’ve been oppressed by rich white people for so long. We deserve to get our health care for free now, and that’s all there is to it.

We’re going to do whatever it takes to avoid paying anything, and use the hell out of the system just because we can, and there isn’t a damn thing anyone can do to stop us, because we won. Elections have consequences. Isn’t that what you’re always telling us? Well, we won this election, and we’re going to get a real kick out of watching our guy have his way with you.

We don’t care if he destroys the job market, or collapses the economy either, because jobs and the economy are only for rich white people. We don’t like to work much anyway, and now that we have free housing, free food, free health care, and free Obamafones, we can make all sorts of easy cash flying under the radar and collecting benefits. And, now that we outnumber you, if we can just keep voting the right people into office, we should be set for a very long time…

We’re hoping that the next guy we elect can get us all some new cars … then we’ll really be set … I wonder if we can get free insurance for those too? Life in America is so good …

Who says anyone is going to get sued jharp? The way I read it, if you don’t buy the insurance, you simply pay the IRS their penalty, and you still get treated just like anyone else. Now, if I’m misreading that, please show me where it says otherwise, but I see absolutely nothing in there about anyone being sued. Even if they DID sue a non-insured, non-paying patient, you can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip, and that’s exactly what’s been going on since the original mandate was handed down to hospitals. Highlander is right … people have been coming in unable to pay for years, and the hospitals have been absorbing it, and passing those costs through. Consequently, prices have gone up for EVERYONE. We were told that this plan was going to fix that, but from the looks of things, it’s just the same old same old. I saw it coming a mile away. The slackers skate, and the responsible people get screwed. But you knew that, right?

I am an intensive care physician. I do not have time to play golf, go on vacation nor deal with all the additional ridiculous regulations imposed upon the medical system by government bureaucrats.

    Obamacare is utterly, contemptibly evil.

When you run into anyone who still drinks the Obama kool aid, just ask them how Obamacare is going to improve either access to or quality of medical care in this country when it mandates 16,000 new IRS agents but not a single new physician to care for the claimed 30-46 million uninsured the leftists cried about before foisting this utterly evil and contemptible tyrrany upon us.

Democrats care for the poor in exactly the same manner as the antebellum plantation owner cared for his slaves. Voting for any democrat is willfully choosing to become an economic slave to the leaders of the mobocracy. Voting for a RINO is almost as bad as voting for a democrat, but sometimes you are not left with a choice.

And that is no different under ObamaCare. You can’t get blood out of a turnip today either.

his kids into the same sort of school), and have all the right doors opened for them?
    WHO WOULDN’T WANT THAT?
how do you get that? by telling people that others are responsible for all their
problems, but you’re going to change that. you keep your power by turning
    the people against each other.

look at them…they are rich…they have everything they want, and they got that wealth
off the hard work of the american people, they didn’t earn it from sacrifice and hard work like middle class folk, they made it the easy way via sweet heart deals and god knows what else. does that sound familiar? it should. our president said that about hard
working americans, when he should’ve been referencing himself and those who’ve
    enriched themselves IN GOVERNMENT.

(and, i shouldn’t just say that middle class folk are the only ones that work hard…i guess
i mean that government policies affect middle class more because it’s harder for people
like us to pay rising energy costs, health costs, and taxes than it is for those in higher
income brackets. the policies disproportionately affect middle class,)

    Already got that.

“Wouldn’t you love to have a job where you decided how much vacation you’d take, sick leave, etc. and still get paid?”

    Got that too.

“And, you could choose from a myriad of fine insurance plans”

Will have that January 1st, 2014

“your children would attend only the best schools”

    Got that too.

“(but you could deny your boss a voucher to get his kids into the same sort of school), and have all the right doors opened for them?

I wouldn’t want that nor can I see why anyone would.

    “how do you get that?”

Easy. Go to work for yourself like I did 27 years ago.

Sounds like the folks on this site had no idea that health care costs in America are ridiculously high. We pay twice as much for our medical care as the rest of the developed world. If we paid the same as Europeans, or the Japanese… we wouldn’t have a budget deficit.

You mean like Spain and Italy? And Japan’s debt to GDP ratio is 200%.

I prefer the childish shadow to the rude, misinformed one …

If you believe that something I say is not correct, feel free to challenge me on it and explain exactly how it is wrong. However, just calling me misinformed doesn’t make it so. As for rude, you are the one constantly engaging in namecalling, whether you realize it or not. (e.g. jharp is insane; Exactly who do you think you’re talking to here dimwit?; Jesus you’re stupid. etc. )

There was nothing wrong with our health care system. Those without insurance were treated anyway. This is not about health care or health insurance. It is about a bloated federal bureaucracy snatching a big portion of the private sector to control the masses. When that faceless idiot called a bureaucrat tells you there is no money to treat your chronically ill child, mother, grandmother, you’ll find out just how wonderful government control is.

If you don’t pay for insurance and just pay the tax you fall right into their plan. They want people to do that. The quicker that happens the sooner the insurance industry will vanish.

Destroying the insurance industry was the primary reason for this legislation. Once they have you on the government dole it’s easier to ration care. You will be pressured to change your lifestyle and demonstrate progress in order to get the care you could previously just make an appointment for and pay for. The federal government is now your doctor.

Liberals used the argument that they don’t want to pay for someone else’s irresponsible living habits (fat smokers, people who don’t wear a helmet, etc), so their solution was to get the federal government to provide care for every American whether they want it or not.

“I don’t want to pay for his dumb behavior, so the solution is to pay for his dumb behavior and have my own healthcare rationed right along with the fat smoker.”

Liberals are non-thinkers. They scream “keep you hands off my body” over abortion but want the government to make every decision for them regarding healthcare and medicine.

Doctors will only be able to provide what Obamacare says they can provide. No more second opinions. The next doctor will be guided by the same regulations.

You better just find a way to get rich and not get sick. Because if you end up in the care of Obamacare in your old age, you will be hastened to your grave. Liberals, the non-thinkers don’t like old people. They think it’s a waste of money to keep gramps alive for another couple months at the cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars or not to provide an elderly woman with a pacemaker because of her age.

They never stop to think that the old people are the ones who need the care. It’s at that time in your life when you actually need it and liberals think it’s wasted money and resources.

I’ve had surgery once in my life and have never stayed in a hospital. Why should I be denied (especially if I can pay for it) to be cared for with dignity and respect and with the best medicine and care available? I shouldn’t be. Obamacare changed that.

Are you saying Obamacare will save us money? It will lower the cost of care?

How many people live in those European countries? Our Medicare insurance covers as many people here as there are in the entire populations of some of those countries. Medicare is currently an upside down, unfunded liability.

The trade off for high healthcare costs is that I get to use my own money and get the care I want, from who I want, when I want. That is gone. Trust me the first few years are going to seem good, but resources will become scarce and growing bureaucracies will eat away at affordable services.

Government can spend $400 million to solve homelessness in a state with a population of about 20,000 homeless people. And after the $400 million is gone, there will still be 20,000 homeless people. They mitigate statistics with more bureaucracy. They don’t solve problems.

Obama is the king and you must bow and sacrifice your health to him. It should be an honor for you to pay him $20,000 yearly to see a state official doctor. The Troll

And I guess that is why liberals established and continue to support Medicare.

The intentional elimination of the US middle class is a key policy hussein soetoro is using to transition us to FULL COMMUNISM (complete with poverty, slavery, etc). http://www.briankellyforcongress.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=100&Itemid=85

At least 7 of hussein lying a–hole soetoro’s Communist policies are right on schedule to transition us to ” The New Dictatorship (New World Order).

Say goodbye to freedom as soon as Stalinist Cass Sunstein’s new Constitution becomes effective. If Cass Sunstein gets his way, we’ll be ruled north Korean style. Cass Sunstein is one of the most dangerous Communists ever! Now that he’s back out of the woodwork and back in action, things can get very brutal, very fast.

Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen trolls quite as dedicated to fantasy and failed ideologies as we have here. To think that these misguided fools are actually running around out there somewhere successfully functioning in society is a real testimony to the strength and resilience of this country.

Sometimes I worry about the damage they’re doing to our society though. They’ve managed to turn half our male population into pansies and degenerates and they’ve ruined some of the best things about living in America, but I tend to think that America will probably survive and eventually recover, despite them. It’s just going to take a little hardship to separate these parasites from their hosts. Most of these people are as useless as teats on a boar hog, sadly lacking in even the most rudimentary survival skills. Their chances of successfully navigating their way through the coming chaos are very slim.
