WAR ON CATS: Progressive Study Says “Policy Intervention” Needed to Protect Mice from Cats

It’s an Obama world.
Now the progressive loons want “policy intervention” to protect mice from cats.

cat mouse

A recent study found that cats are killing mice at an astonishing rate.

Anthropogenic threats, such as collisions with man-made structures, vehicles, poisoning and predation by domestic pets, combine to kill billions of wildlife annually. Free-ranging domestic cats have been introduced globally and have contributed to multiple wildlife extinctions on islands. The magnitude of mortality they cause in mainland areas remains speculative, with large-scale estimates based on non-systematic analyses and little consideration of scientific data. Here we conduct a systematic review and quantitatively estimate mortality caused by cats in the United States. We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.4–3.7 billion birds and 6.9–20.7 billion mammals annually. Un-owned cats, as opposed to owned pets, cause the majority of this mortality. Our findings suggest that free-ranging cats cause substantially greater wildlife mortality than previously thought and are likely the single greatest source of anthropogenic mortality for US birds and mammals. Scientifically sound conservation and policy intervention is needed to reduce this impact.

And, to think, “mousers” were once valued for their hunting skills.

They do kill a lot of birds. It’s open season on cats that stray into my back yard. Cats are tasty snacks for the local owls and coyotes also.

Since the government has banned rat poison I’m going to breed cats and release them all into the wild. Hundreds. Thousands. The world won’t stop turning if mice and rats go extinct.

  • JKB

My cats must be broke. I have a house cat who goes outside but only kills the odd mouse found in the garage and I assume the house should one breach the perimeter. Plus a half feral who I feed and I believe another feral on occasion. They are all three black so hard to tell apart, especially at night. Yet, the birds eat the hard cat food right out of the bowl and the voles are still plowing up my yard.

No offense Jim – but this format is old and outdated. I suggest Intense Debate for an actual conversation. It’s not “lively” as the topics demand. Of-course this is your site, an yours’ to do as you wish.

Anyway – I don’t like cats – they run rampant in my neighborhood and the owners could careless. I know this is going to offend some folks that love cats, but I would like the option to remove them from my property, permanently. I’ve had enough crap under my deck.

  • JDR-Taq

Where does it mention mice? Feral and free ranging cats are a menace to bird and other populations. This is not new, or “looney”, information.

In many areas, feral cats are trapped due to the damage they do to local animal populations, particularly rare birds.

A “policy intervention” would be something like this:

“Keep your cat on your own damned property, or it’s going to be captured and
taken to the Humane Society. You have three days to pay a fine and pick it up”

This is a scientific paper pointing out the problem, and recommending that localities need to do something about it. It has nothing to do with Federal law.

Seriously….this blog has gone down the rabbit hole.

The feral cats in our neighborhood must be lazy because our bird population has exploded. Birds make more of a mess with their poop than do cats. Their singing in the early morning hours in the Spring is nice to hear, but I wish they would fly off somewhere else the rest of the day. Funny thing this winter, I have noticed a couple of hawks loitering about which I have never seen before.

The anti-cat thing was probably instigated by Cass Sunstein before he abandoned the title of “regulations czar” and scurried further int the shadows to do his dirty work. It’s probably somewhere in the enormous pile of O-Tax regulatory garbage. Sunstein is an advocate of pets having rights to sue their owners, or some such meshugas (Yiddish for craziness). The regime will come after your pets and farm animals, too. Just watch. Like all oppressive, totalitarian, utopian regimes, they want – no, crave – to leave the people defenseless, sick, starving and in rags. They are all sociopaths. They are overjoyed at bringing n the plague and then denying even basic health care.

There is public housing and free showers for prairie dogs. I’d like to see a private foundation to provide kitty shoulder bags for holding balls of yarn. It’s not as good as a mouse, but it might be enough to keep em away from drugs, which of course always leads to gun violence.

In the 1970s, when I was a kid, we moved into the foothills in Hayward, CA near a city park which abutted a canyon area with hiking trails. We used to see California Quail (the State bird) come out of the canyon every day.

Sometime in the 1980s, people began dumping their cats in the park, and the feral cat population grew.

The quail disappeared in the ’90s, and despite efforts to trap and remove the ferals (one guy on the block caught 50 – 60 over several years, and I trapped at least a dozen,) they continue to plague the park and canyon.

I moved to Reno in 2009, and we used to see a few squirrels around the apartment property. A few tenants let their cats live outside during most of the year (they bring them inside during the winter,) and now the squirrels are gone.

I can understand having a spayed or neutered “barn cat” at a farm, but think that all other cats should be kept indoors.

  • Teddy

What we need a moratorium on liberals.

  • Cactus

Humane groups are already running TNR (trap, neuter, return) programs for feral or “community” cats. They do just what they say: trap the cats, have them spayed/neutered, then release them back to where they came from. This way, the cats don’t have to be killed, but there aren’t generations of new ones. Obviously, this method takes a while, but it does work, and it’s a humane solution.

Christian and Jews believe that God made man to have dominion over the earth.

Wouldn’t controlling the numbers of feral cats be considered part of that dominion?

So, now they’re going to incite cat cruelty? Good grief, they should have their I Amendment rights taken away. Please don’t call these people “Progressive.” Call them what they really are, the mentally ill. If any cats are abused because of this, this group should be sued for millions in damages.

libs will hafta pass laws to ban the killing of rats by cats
AND THEN… the bubonic plague will return
and kill about 20 million people…

and libs will be shocked their policies caused it.

…or they will have to force the population to eat cats and serve them to children in the cafeteria in public schools along with other cokked or baked animals…
I mean… 0bama already eats dogs so… this seems like one of the likely lib solutions.

#90 – The problem with the “food chain” argument is that the fact that the feral cats in a population center have so many alternative ways of getting food, that their numbers greatly exceed what would be the normal ratio of predator to prey that’s found in nature.

In the case of my experience in Hayward, CA, there was a woman in the neighborhood who would feed a dozen or more feral cats every day. That increased the ratio of predators to prey in the area, and since cats sometimes kill for sport, meant more birds and small mammals were killed than would have been otherwise.

Then again, I’m a dog person, so I’m a little prejudiced against cats to begin with.

  • Neal

    Coyotes will fix that problem.

  • Jeannie

Disarm. Herd us all into the city. Make living conditions primitive. Control all aspects of our environment.

Decrease the surplus population so the illegals can replace us in their rightful roles as valued citizen, enjoy the kind of lifestyle of N. Korean goon army military and join the private militia to repress any minority folks still thinking about freedom and attempting to enter classes above their stations.

eugenics and oppression, now playing in nearly every current government run by non-representative stupid, narcissistic egomaniacs.

Folks, we outnumber them. Wake up and grow spines and focus.

  • Jeannie

Your master: we do not know how low a number eugenics, pop control enviros think is optimal for a sustainable earth.

Mao killed 80 to 100 million and these folks celebrate him.

  • Jeannie

People do not have nearly the effect activists claim and those of you who support our fixing things are the grease that runs the government cranking out freedom stealing decrees.

God made people in his image. A little use of brain cells would help deduce that diminishing our ranks in favor of the animals, who have no free will but automatically respond to inner natural rules of behavior, and the planet, which ruthlessly kills with natural elements unless tamed by man’s ability to create families, shelter and civilized society, might help us escape this PC, relativist chicken hearted era.

The awful humans are those now in power repressing us because they assume their awful behavior is shared by the masses and so they have to overpower. In truth common decency is a much more normal desire, but we’ve let it be indoctrinated out of us.

Faith builds. Narcissism and self-interest destroys.

does any one remember the plague. spread by mice and rodents around the country.

Plague is a deadly infectious disease that is caused by the enterobacteria Yersinia pestis, named after the French-Swiss bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin. Primarily carried by rodents (most notably rats) and spread to humans via fleas, the disease is notorious throughout history, due to the unrivaled scale of death and devastation it brought.

    Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plague_%28disease%29

so i thank them and all cats for keeping us safe from diseases.

    i have 2 cats that kill a probably 5-10 a week each.

  • Stan

I have both dogs and cats. I appreciate the cats killing rodents, because rodents entice rattlesnakes into the area. No rodents for them to feed on and the rattlesnakes go elsewhere.

  • Buck Bradley

Nature’s magnificent killing machines. I thought it was so funny that I could never convince my mother that if I accidentally let one of my cats outside they would not inevitably get lost and starve to death. Eaten by a coyote? Run over by a car? Sure maybe. Starve to death? The birds and the rodents should be so lucky……
