Omaha Wendy’s Franchise Forced to Cut Employee Hours Thanks to Obamacare

It’s an Obama world.
An Omaha Wendy’s franchise announced it would cut hours for 100 employees due to the new Democrat Obamacare health plan.

WOWT reported:

A fast-food chain is slashing employee hours so franchise owners don’t have to pay health benefits. Around 100 local Wendy’s workers have learned their hours are being cut. A spokesperson says a new health care law is to blame.

“Thirty-six to 37 hours a week.” That’s how many hours T.J. Growbeck works at the 84th and Giles Wendy’s restaurant. The money he earns helps him pay for the basics, but that’s not the case for all his co-workers. “There are some people doing it trying to get by.”

The company has announced that all non-management positions will have their hours reduced to 28 a week. Gary Burdette, Vice President of Operations for the local franchise, says the cuts are coming because the new Affordable Health Care Act requires employers to offer health insurance to employees working 32-38 hours a week. Under the current law they are not considered full time and that as a small business owner, he can’t afford to stay in operation and pay for everyone’s health insurance.

Of course, the nutjobs on the left blame Wendy’s for this development and not Barack Obama.

  • I just want to know if this will in any way hamper the order of the 125 triple cheeseburgers, 175 orders of Biggie fries, and the 250 Frosties it takes to put Queen Moochie in a good mood for the week…..

  • Lim Lynn

I don’t think the each and every single employee are happy with Obama who took Republican idea Affordable Care Act and turn into their Socialist Democrat Commie version Obamacare where RFID chip is present in the bill.

  • donh

AND….On top of having hours CUT…Payroll taxes on those reduced hours INCREASE…..All Hail Satan !….( strike gong here ) >

  • Dave

Yes, I do blame Wendy’s. Why do they want to refuse health care for their workers? Do they care so little about the welfare of the people who drive their business? Let’s see just how much of a profit those at the top made last year – I don’t begrudge them their success, but how can they call themselves humans if they refuse to look out not only for their fellow man but those whose work made them that profit. You can say that Hobby Lobby objects to Obamacare because they are Christian, but I can’t think of anything less Christian than denying fellow humans their health.

  • Lim Lynn

    @Jim Hoft
Socialist Democrat Commie too ignorant and blinded from the effect when Barack Hussein Obama shine a laser beam [acting as taxation and ObamaCare] at them while their pocket have been emptied by him. He had been lying too long while he didn’t care for American citizens but illegal immigrants who took every job available in America. He and his family cared about freebies given to him golf, vacation and more tax money to be spend while usual American citizen suffers further since they doesn’t have source of income [big paycheck] to make ends meet in 2013. Under the line poverty people have to work all day long to keep up with expenditure to fulfill the need to eat, buy needed utensils, buy essential ingredient to cook and pay various kind of bills just like a proverb in Malay says kias pagi makan pagi, kais malam makan malam .

It’s just like those increased minimum wage ballot initiatives. While some aspect can be mandated, the hitch is that worker’s hours can be cut to balance it out, or, in some situations, an employer might just simply do with less employees.

Liberals seem to think that utopia can be legislated into existence but they end up finding out the hard way that the world doesn’t work that way.

  • retire05

#6, Dave, you’re not very bright, are you?

Those Wendy workers did not have health insurance to begin with, now they not only have no health insurance, but they are now going to lose 8-10 hours pay.

And here is a question for you (being the libtard you are): can you call yourself a human when you are willing to rip a child from its mother’s womb simple because it is an “inconvenience?” Frankly, I can’t think of anything less Christian that the willful murder of another human being. Bet you support abortion, though.

  • retire05

There was a website called It named the companies that supported the Democrat Party and encouraged Democrats to buy from those companies. It shut down in 2007 because it was a good resource for conservatives to learn what companies donated to the Democrat [socialist] Party and not buy from them.

So all those OWSers over at ThinkProgs can whine and cry about how they are going to boycott Wendy’s, but it will only come back to bite them in the tail end. Guess they forgot the Tale of The Twinkie.

For me? I intend to eat at Wendy’s tomorrow, Chick-fil-A the next day and support every company that thumbs their nose at Obamacare.

  • Highlander

So Dave, I suppose you’d be willing to pay $6 for a Wendy’s cheeseburger so that they could buy health insurance for all their minimum wage employees? Or maybe the owner should just file bankruptcy, close his stores, and put all those people out of work?

Elections have consequences, and people who have no understanding of the realities of life have no business being allowed to cast votes …

  • Highlander

    retire05 – EXACTLY!

  • bobdog

#6, Dave, I agree with you completely. Wendy’s should be forced to commit business suicide. It’s for the good of the state. It’s an honor to go bankrupt for the state.

It’s not so bad, anyway. There are numerous government assistance programs available once they go out of business. Food Stamps, five years of unemployment insurance, free cell phones, assistance for single family parents, free government healthcare for life, immunity from federal income taxes, maybe even low-income housing and free dance lessons.

  • Highlander

retire05, not only are they going to have no health insurance, and work fewer hours, but they are going to have more FICA withheld. PLUS, the cost of EVERYTHING they buy is going to go up thanks to the trickle down of taxes from above, and the devaluation of the dollar. It’s incredible how stupid people are nowadays. We spend so much on education, but I guess they just aren’t teaching people what they really need to know are they?

My wife works for a very large grocery store chain in the South. As of January 1st all non-managerial workers could not be scheduled for more than 28 hours. We are talking about thousands of people becoming underemployed. This is becoming a common business practice across the country. Businesses have just realized they are better off not announcing it so we are not hearing about it so much. Obama is just to god damn stupid to understand or forsee how destructive his policies are. That’s assuming, of course, that he isn’t purposely trying to destroy the economy.

Dave, the people who “drive” business are the CUSTOMERS, the management, and the investors, not the minimum wage employees. Burger flippers and floor scrubbers are a dime a dozen, and most of them couldn’t care less if they had health insurance or not. They come and go from week to week, and their level of commitment to the business is questionable. If the people of America want to provide health care benefits to every minimum wage employee in America, they’d better be prepared for major increases in THEIR cost of living because the money just isn’t there to pay for everyone’s health care at today’s prices. You would have us believe that the shareholders and owners of businesses like this are getting filthy rich, and could easily afford to absorb those extra costs, and that is simply untrue. We tried to tell that to the architects of this stupid plan when they were cooking it up, but they just wouldn’t listen to us …

Now, if you think you know how to run a Wendy’s franchise, and could find a way to compete in today’s marketplace while paying health care benefits to your minimum wage employees, I suggest you quit whining about how this franchisee does things, open up your own franchise, an show us how it’s done…. otherwise, give us a break and STFU.

Auntie, the day the government starts telling me how many employees I have to hire, and how many hours they have to work will be the day I close my business.

  • Objective Analysis

@Dave. You should be happy. Now all those workers who work less than 28 hours a week, can get on the GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE ROLLS and wait in long lines to have someone said that they can take a pill for their broken leg and everything will be alright. Where have I seen this before?

Tuskegee Syphillis Experiment conducted during FDR’s monarchy reign. Well, it looks like people of all colors, not just black folks (or the Japanese Americans who suffered imprisonment) will be affected.

Hope, Change = Welfare for all. Long Hail Obama, dear leader.

I am wondering who these folks voted for? hmmmm.

Your profit will be gone if there’s too many employees you hire and if too long the working hours you will have to cover the losses which always happen in business world. I understand Oliver that Barack Hussein Obama isn’t small and medium business friendly. Slowly all business bankrupt and closes, no supply generated therefore no demand, less export and import, the country’s economy won’t generating more income, economy dies, debt-to-GDP ratio increases nearly touching debt ceiling and we will be jumping off fiscal cliff. .

The big city near me, 300,000 pop, passed a “living wage” act. It hit the Hotels pretty hard. The amounts were something like $11 bucks an hour with health benefits and others and 13.30/hr with no benefits.
So the Hotel dn the street, really a motel announced that one Wed morning all the cleaner-workers would be fired.Everyone was there: the city coucil, the unions, the workers, and the fair employement grp. “Not fair”, ‘we didn’t expect this”
So the manager comes out and she says that the economy isn’t that great and the motel will change the number of rooms way down. Most of the desk staff can do those.
Further this city has several big pageants and huge hotels dn, a convention center and thinks they are the slice bread capital. But all the fancy hotels for conventions are going to moth-ball several of the floors, to get dn below the min nr.

Stupid! No business knowlege. “Never have so many, been so badly served by so few” Our USA motto now!.

A question Does Socialist Democrat Commie envy, hates hardworking successful American citizens, wants to control and turn the whole World into Utopia nightmare?

  • this is just what obama and his communists cohorts wanted. they are out to destroy america. two years ago i needed rehab, the person that owned the facility attended a conference of healthcare providers concerning obamacare, their conclusion was that if obamacare was fully implemented in 2014 the country will be bankrupt in 6 months.

  • #36lim…there is nothing utopian about communism. they are the most evil people in the history of the world.

The company I work for is doing this now. I’m going from 40+ hours a week down to 32.. In a couple of months, it’s going down to 26…

I don’t blame the company, I blame Obama voters.

  • FMB42

Here’s just a small part of the NWO plan for the United States:

Use the ACA (i.e. “Obama Care”) as a means of reducing the financial resources of the productive income tax payers as an excuse to give non-productive non-income taxpayers even more free health care.

Breaking down full-time jobs into part-time jobs as a means of increasing the employment numbers.

Push more people into public assistance dependent lifestyles by reducing their work hours (remember, private sector financial independence is the bane of our insidious government).

Meanwhile, Obama Care does not apply to the illegal immigrants that continue to abuse our health care system. That’s right, those who have harmed our H.C. system the most during the last 25+ years are not required to abide by the Obama Care mandate.

  • RedBeard

Dave the Liberal seems to believe that private enterprise should function as social welfare agencies. And he’s right in step with the Democrat Party and its phony-baloney Dear Leader.

Where, exactly, does Dave the Liberal think the money would come from to pay health insurance premiums? My business has a certain amount of dough available for payroll. We don’t provide health insurance. If we did, the employees’ pay would go down by the amount of those premiums. This is simple 2+2 stuff, which might explain why libs have such a tough time understanding it.

We can’t print extra hundred dollar bills, just to make Dave the Liberal feel good about the way we “care” for our employees. Our people opted for higher pay, and to arrange for their own insurance coverage. This, if Dave the Liberal is still having trouble with the concept, is called individual responsibility.

  • theBuckWheat

In a few years, few employees below the management will have full time jobs in any industry. ObamaCare will make “job sharing” the norm rather than the exception. As a consequence of this attempt to bring about the socialist Utopia, workers will be worse off, having to work two 28 hour per week jobs and not qualifying for any “benefits”. But still Bush’s fault!

  • Jim Breed

Unions may have given us the 40 hour workweek, it took Obamacare to give us the 28 hour workweek.

These people work 3 days a week and want free health insurance. Less hours per employee mean more employees/jobs. Nothing stops them from going down the street and getting an additional 3 day a week job from the next fast food place. Then they work a full week for a full weeks pay.

  • Lim Lynn

Actually, do you really understand the College and University system? Mostly, the requirement before you enroll to College and University is that you have to keep up with syllabus that doesn’t teach what the job requires instead needed to specialize in other book smart not street smart mindset.

  • Lim Lynn

Only those who join internship will learn totally what the job requires which happen to my senior in my school. She had to learn accounting in University but it seems the syllabus didn’t suit the job requirement. Moreover, she had to take another degree which really teaches the requirement for the job and later she started working as professional accountant.

  • Lim Lynn

Thus, the lesson is that you go and learn during internship not go to College and University for your degree which will save a ton of money.

You shouldn’t. The food industry in general and fast food in particular operates with a very small profit margin in the first place. My daughter, who works in retail, happened to be examining her first paycheck of the new year while we were visiting the other day. She remarked on two things. 1. They took out far more in taxes. 2. Her employer paid more than $6000 for his share of her insurance last year – before Obamacare went into effect.

it isn’t just Wendy’s, it is ALL businesses across the board that are reducing employee hours for employees not designated as full-time to 28 or less because of Obamacare.

Because Wendy’s would have to raise the price of their hamburger to $8.00…and …be put out of business for huge drop in sales volume.

  • Sarah

Highlander – Like you, I understand what it takes to run a small business. There is already NO incentive to succeed in this country and O-care and Obama’s policies have only compounded this problem. What liberal progressives fail to acknowledge is most business owners genuinely care about their employees. Further, small business owners who cannot afford health coverage for employees also often (unless they have a spouse with coverage) must purchase their own personal health insurance at great cost as well. Businesses simply cannot shoulder the cost of every personal want or need of their employees. Good luck to the both of us in the Obama economy.

    retire05 – I completely agree with you.

People like Dave are the reason this country is faltering. He exhibits a complete lack of understanding of economics and markets and thinks the world owes everyone a high standard of living, a nice home in a good school district, two cars and yearly Disney vacations. One has to work for those things and MAKE CHOICES in life and education to get them there (and even that’s not guaranteed; such is life). Wendy’s is not in business as a charity; they are not a 501c3. They need to pay their bills. They need to make profit to drive further investment and growth into new communities. People who do not agree with that should find a country with an economy built on their progressive utopian concepts (and enjoy the civil unrest, rationing and unemployment).

  • Jerry C

There’s a reason some people work at fast-food restaurants. McDonald’s was my first job as a teenager & I also worked for Hardee’s while putting myself through college. After I earned my degree, I started at the bottom of my field & worked my way up while I gained experienced. It’s called Individual Responsibility by setting goals, working hard & sacrificing to obtain your dream (good job, nice house, cars, vacations, etc…).

btw-my divorced mother with a 9th grade education raised seven children by herself. Five of us seven have gone on to attain college degrees. But I digress, “it’s for the children!” Idiot.
