Obama Says “Not Raising Debt Ceiling Is Absurd” But Voted Against It in 2006

President Obama used the final press conference of his first term to warn congressional Republicans that he will not negotiate with them over the debt ceiling, saying “To even entertain the idea (of not raising the debt ceiling), it’s absurd.”

But back 2006 Barack Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling.

And in July 2008 Barack Obama said President Bush was “unpatriotic” and “irresponsible” for raising the debt by $4 trillion.
(Barack Obama added $5.8 trillion his first four years in office.)

From the video:

“The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents — #43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.

More… As Kevin Eder says: “Had Obama been President during the debt ceiling debate of 2006, he would have been really, really mad at Senator Obama.”

Under Obama, this country is perpetually in a fiscal crisis.

    It never ends.

    Why, it’s almost as if he’s a two-faced punk.

  • And this liar and hypocrite is using 2 bibles for his inaugural ceremony. One belonging to MLK Jr. and the other to Abraham Lincoln. I think he needs a bigger stack of bibles. What hypocrisy! What a sacrilege!

  • MrGoodWench

    Aaaawwwww….c’mon man,
being unpatriotic is the only thing Obama does so well….please don’t deprive him of his only USP.

Don’t even get me started on the Lincoln stuff. I heard Hollywood had Clinton introduce the Lincoln movie at their big awards show to a standing ovation. When I think of what the saintly, honorable and heroic Abe Lincoln had to deal with in his presidency and his life, then I think about slick willy getting his weasel greased by miss chunky love in that place of honor, I just want to puke. Neither Clinton or HRH Obama are fit to be mentioned in the same sentence with our greatest president.

Obama, the man who has no memory of his past actions when it suits him.

The Marxist fails to realize that his chickens are coming home to roost.

The people making $50,000 and under are learning about their new tax rate, as are the people who make $100,000.

Those out of work are losing all hope of a job.

The prices of things are going up daily, and people, who have been barely making ends meet are starting to really worry.

Soon, he will be the most hated man in America, and then neither the media nor Hollywood will be able to rewrite the script.

So adding $4T in 8 years to the debt is irresponsible, unpatriotic. So then what is adding nearly $7T to the debt in less than 4 years considered?

Since it is His Majesticness Barry Soetero it must be Awesome, Wonderful, Magnificent, Superb, etc.

Hypocritical POS. Unfortunately this type of 2 faced action is becoming part of the dem party. Makes you wonder how they can look at themselves in the mirror. It is amazing the difference in progressive/dems when they are in power vs when they are out of power–you’d swear it was different people. This is what happens when you have no core beliefs and all you want is power.

The U.S. has been taken over and people are talking about the lying POS in Office who is a usurper and not a constitutionally eligible and legal President. You are at war on U.S. ground and most Americans haven’t even fathomed this reality. Obama is taking the U.S. down and down it will go. Even a legitimate birth certificate from Kenya with all the legal seals etc. can’t convince Americans that a muslim has infiltrated all avenues in the U.S. and taken over America. More time just gives Obama more time to screw you all over. Time is a wasting Unfortunately biblical prophecy doesn’t change and from the looks of it, no one is making any great move to stop Obama and his traitor cronies. Tsk, tsk. Time to get yourselves right with Jesus Christ. God blessed America and made it great because you were good, but now He sends storms, doom and gloom, because America is no longer good.

    Daniel 8:23:25 Ferrar Fenton Translation
“And at the end of those kingdoms, when the offences are expiated, a king of fierce expression and who understands policy will arise, with mighty power,–but not his own power,–and be wonderfully corrupt, but prosper, and be energetic and destroy the mighty and Holy People. And his policy and diplomacy will increase with his power, so that he will enlarge himself to his own mind, and destroy many by treachery,–Then he will stand up against the PRINCE OF PRINCES,–and be broken without a hand!

Feb 15th – the market will start to crash. Brace yourselves because it’s coming.

  • Not driving America deeper and deeper into crushing mind numbing debt is absurd? What’s absurd is that this great nation is allowing this mediocre foreigner to dictate terms of surrender to it. Does Hussein think that living in the WH allows him to run the U.S. like he would his native Indonesia?

  • #15 S Wolfe So far he’s been able to run the whole show the way he wants to, with little or no resistance. What is wrong with the republican party? Bunch of weenies and cowards!

“To even entertain the idea (of not raising the debt ceiling), it’s absurd.”

The first credit card I ever had was a Visa with a limit of $500 (this was 20+ years ago). Back then, I never came close to reaching that card limit, and even if I had, I would never have entertained the idea of going to the bank and demanding that they increase the limit.

Republicans are intimidated by him in the same way those oh so civilized college deans were intimidated by the angry radicals of the 60s which in fact is all Hussein is, an angry radical.

The left is working overtime to advance the meme that the GOP plans to refuse to raise the debt ceiling and stiff everyone we owe, which is, of course, COMPLETELY FALSE. What is being proposed is simply refusing to raise the debt ceiling until a WORKABLE PLAN is in place to reverse the course we’re on and pay the debt down. What objection could anyone possibly have to that plan, unless of course they have no intention of EVER reducing spending?

What we’re looking at is the equivalent of sending Washington to a credit counselor and getting our debt restructured, and anyone who has ever been through that process knows that the FIRST STEP in that process is always CUTTING UP THE DAMN CREDIT CARDS so the problem doesn’t get any worse. This is just common sense, and the people who are objecting to it and trying to make the public believe that it’s a mistake (yes, that’s YOU Shadow) are enemies of America. Period. Our creditors will be happy to wait a few days for this issue to be sorted out if it means putting the United States back on solid fiscal ground and protecting their investment….

Once we have a plan in place, it is certainly conceivable that SOME creditors and some federal programs will be receiving a little less than they would like to be receiving, but something has to give somewhere if we’re ever going to reduce the debt. The left would have us believe that the GOP wants to just quit paying our bills completely, which is complete BS. The fact is, our credit rating has ALREADY BEEN DOWNGRADED because we couldn’t come up with a plan, and jacking the debt ceiling up again without a plan will only make it worse. Our credit rating has nowhere to go but down if we continue to allow our debt to balloon, and I think most Americans understand that. It’s just simple economics and it amazes me how willing the left is to insult our intelligence by telling us otherwise.

The bottom line is that Washington has spent more than we pay in taxes for several decades, and put it all on credit. Now, we’re sitting here with all the goodies they’ve given us, but none of it has been paid for. We’re going to have to spend LESS than we take in for quite a while now to pay off those debts, and that’s going to require some sacrifices … sacrifices that liberals are apparently unwilling to make without a fight.

If it’s a fight they want, then it’s a fight they’ll get, because we simply cannot continue to kick this can down the road any longer without putting our entire economy at risk. I think the GOP recognizes that, and hopefully, they will refuse to back down this time…

Republican congressman get this message: The debt ceiling isn’t up for negotiation. Not even on the table. It will be hit and the president has to deal with it. A budget must be submitted to congress that includes the new the spending limits.

  • The debt ceiling shouldn’t be raised, it should be lowered. It is simply the amount Congress authorizes the federal government to borrow above tax receipts. The government currently borrows a trillion dollars a year and spends four trillion, three trillion of which comes from taxes. Lowering the debt ceiling by half would allow the government to borrow half a trillion a year which is plenty, especially for a wastrel like Hussein.

  • JoyO

It’s clear that from Obama’s perspective, Congress needs to raise his credit card limit so he can spend more!

More double speaking happening as usual since he always will be a hypocrite liar who say one thing and do another thing. If the present Barack Hussein Obama meet the past Barack Hussein Obama both of them say well we are on schedule to destroy America till she can’t survive any financial cliff any longer with increase debt ceiling.

  • YourMaster

    cut all the spending…
I’d prefer to let the dems drown in another great depression
(which given the debt… is likely to happen in the future…)

Lowering the debt ceiling by half would allow the government to borrow half a trillion a year which is plenty,

Where do you guys get this stuff? Do you just make it up? If the debt ceiling is cut in half, not only could no more money be borrowed, half of the debt – some $8 trillion – would have to be paid back, all at once. Do not pass go. Do not collect “half a trillion” dollars.

He says these things because he is an amoral soul. He is the perfected, modern version of The Prince, as described by Machiavelli several hundred years ago (no apology to any Machiavelli appologists out their). He does anything, says anything, and will do anything to expand his power.

The Right for too long has viewed and argued against socialism on the grounds that it has a proven track record of failure everywhere it has been attempted. The goal isn’t (and likely never was) to erect socailism, it is to erect a system where the majority power at the time can maintain power as far as the eye can see. This also, not overlooked by its proponents, has the added benefit of keeping those in power at the time perpetually so. Ergo, welcome to the resurrected age of the philosopher-king with chairman barry plato holding the leading chair.

Couple that with the fact that hussein may very likely have as an additional goal the overthrowing of the U.S. as a world power and you have a very strong argument for never allowing those who don’t hold property to vote (or some variation thereof to prevent the creation of a voting majority through theft of the fruit of other people’s labors).

obama voted against raising the debt in 2006 because there was a Republican President in the White House and obama is probably just raciest.
