Brilliant!… Obama Official: Thanks to Extending Unemployment Benefits “Millions of Jobs Were Saved” (Video)

It’s an Obama world…
Only an Obama official could come up with an economic statement as asinine as this.
Thanks to extending unemployment benefits “millions of jobs were saved.”
Via Zero Hedge:

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis made her ubiquitous post-NFP appearance on CNBC this morning and spouted the usual propaganda. However, while discussing how wonderful the ATRA was, the seemingly slap-happy Solis noted how great the fact that emergency unemployment benefits were extended for millions of people was – and that thanks to that (and the magic of the Keynesian multiplier), millions of jobs were saved. So, to sum up, paying people not to work, saved millions and millions of jobs?

And you wonder why this is the worst jobs economy since the Great Depression?

Think of how many jobs were needed for that $20 million dollar vacation.

  • Idiot!

  • Skandia Recluse

Well, obviously then, think how many more jobs could be saved if even more people were unemployed!

  • American Woman

    This women is an idiot?

No, this women is an enemy of the state and willfully takes us down the road of purposeful annihilation. The Obama Administration is filled with others that share her same world view.

They need to be indicted for treason. How can we do that? Turn to Eric Holder or members of Congress? (Ouch!)

  • Finncrisp

Ignorance is bliss in Washington these days. MSM remains remarkably uncurious about the ignorance that passes for knowledge. Fanticizing about finances usually ends badly…

What is really scary is that are far too many of the stupid in this country who believes that.

  • Lim Lynn

    @ Tom
It wasn’t only $20 million dollar vacation. We should add the earlier Total Amount of vacation and expenditure done by Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and the children.

  • And you know what is even worse? Millions of people will believe her.

  • Lilbby

This woman is a blithering idiot.

  • Adi

She actually makes a lot of sense, after all, you need 4 bureaucrats for every unemployment check.

  • Look-Out

Watch Cavuto’s show — he’s got the guy on that Obama FACE to FACE promised he’d make sure the red tape would be cut re Sandy victims.

This guy’s pi@@ed and said Barry’s “A liar and a phony.” (missed alot of the rest of interview)

  • ★FALCON★

On the other hand it’s not the fault of the unemployed that the Obama Administration has created a jobs catastrophe and an economic meltdown.

There just aren’t jobs to be had. I really don’t feel they should be the brunt of the rebuke when they are not really to blame. I can’t, in good conscious, think allowing them to starve is the right answer when America Obama tossed 90 billion down the toilet on “green energy”. That money could have been used for jobless benefits. I would rather see it go to folks that need it in an uncertain economic time, then to Obama cronies.

An Administration’s job is not to quote *create* unquote jobs, but to set the market conditions that allow private enterprise to capitalize on those conditions. In other words, get the hell outta the way so those that understand business are free to engage it.

“FISCAL CLIFF” put in much better perspective.

    Lesson # 1:

    • U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
    • Fed budget: $3.820.000.000.000
    • New debt: $1,650,000,000,000
    • National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
    • Recent budget: $38,500,000,000

Let’s now remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a household budget:

    • Annual family income: $21,700
    • Money de family spend: $38,200
    • New debt on the credit card: $16,500
    • Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
    • Total budget cuts so far: $38,50

    Got it??… OK now.

    Lesson # 2:

Here’s another way to lock at the Debt Ceiling:

Let’s say, you come home from work and find there has been a sewer
Backup in your neighbourhood ….and your home has sewage all the way up to the ceilings.
What do you think you should do…

Raise the ceilings, or remove the sh.t?

Post 15: Bravo. Moreover, the quislings of the “fourth estate” should be front and center in showing the lunacy of Solis and others of the collective who trot out this gibberish when confronted with real unemployment in this Nation.

  • Oliver

Perfect example of how Dems can successfully build an emotional, compelling case based on a FALSE PREMISE, knowing full well Republicans will get distracted by the minutia, and completely miss the fact that the original premise was WRONG.

    Who is John Galt?

  • Stella Baskomb

Sooooo Hilda – now all the people on extended unemployment can be hired into all the jobs saved thanks to extended unemployment.

    Presto! No more unemployment !

    Neat as a whistle.

(You know how to whistle don’t you Hilda? Just put your lips together and blow.)

Anyway I guess saving jobs by paying for unemployment is how it works in Sacramento – Solis’ district when she was in the House.

And just look what GREAT shape California is in.

  • dan

Having unemployment or not having unemployment does mean one can get a job.I been unemployed for over one year .Since have no unemployment benefits.Somehow people think this mean everyone getting unemployment, when they are not. There are to few jobs for all of us out of work .

  • cavt

Another wonderful example of our public education system and the quality of economic understanding taught. Talk about the blind leading the blind—–

  • Blacque Jacques Shellacque

And you wonder why this is the worst jobs economy since the Great Depression?

    I don’t.

  • Sasja

dan, I don’t know where you live, but there are jobs. We have jobs here. We’re not a blue state so perhaps that is why.

  • Sasja

Now, on the other hand, over a million jobs have just vanished since Bungles was emaculated im 2008. Gone. Kaput.

There is a legitimate case that some level of support for people seeking work does help keep other people in jobs. Unemployment assistance raises the demand for goods and services and that can help keep employment up. I doubt that a year’s worth of unemployment assistance is a good idea and most of Obama’s economic policies are foolish — but there’s at least a shred of credibility for this position.
The President and his team are still demonstrably wrong on general policy.

  • SeniorD

Only Federal Government jobs were saved. Afterall, just think of the number of bureaucrats are needed to genuflect at the Marbled Monument to Murphys’s Law?

I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve never collected unemployment benefits (came close 2 – 3 times tho). I also think that the unemployment benefits system is a good thing (except for the fraud).

However, Hilda’s comments are typical of how many Democrats think; i.e. “handing out money to those who don’t work creates jobs for those that do.”

The promotion of such a belief, of course, can only lead to a ruined economic system.

Anyway, this reminds me of the time a welfare recipient told me, in all seriousness, that “the sales taxes she paid paid for her welfare check.”

    I kid you not…

  • WTF would we do without him

  • Ceroth

This proves that to these people that if you take “support” from the government that you are an employee of the government. If you leave the government dole, you are no longer an employee,

  • Mike Hunt

It’s pretty clear Hilda Soiled-her-pants wasn’t hired on account of her smarts.

  • Blacque Jacques Shellacque

Unemployment assistance raises the demand for goods and services and that can help keep employment up.

The problem is that such assistance is basically taxpayer dollars that have simply changed hands and is now considered to be the recipient’s money to spend.

Instead of extending and extending and extending unemployment benefits, the damned government needs to get the f-ck out of the way and let the private sector recover without fear of government action, whether it be via regulation or some other intervention. What ails us can mostly be solved by robust and sustained economic activity, combined with fiscal discipline. Problem is, the current regime, directly and indirectly, isn’t encouraging either.

  • Joanne

Maybe if they stopped giving people monies to live one, they would actually go get a job.

  • MT Geoff

#32: Howdy Blacque Jacque. Unemployment assistance does pass tax money around and government unemployment assistance does distort the employment market. There’s a lot of truth in your point. I just want to be fair to Ms. Soldis as well; her point has a small validity.

  • Oliver

#25 and #34: WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
There is no economic benefit to unemployment: Read the stats:

Remember when Pelosi said unemployment insurance was the best form of stimulus? Seriously — this is what I was talking about: EVALUATE THE PREMISE (which is just another way of saying: use your common sense!).

These people use emotion to present an argument that rational people laugh at. Hilda and Nancy prove my point.

I just want to be fair to Ms. Soldis as well; her point has a small validity.

The mindset of people claiming that extended unemployment benefits saves jobs is like the person that concentrates on trying to keep their car from being repossessed, but managed to open themselves up to losing their home to foreclosure. Technically, the car was saved, but a larger price was paid elsewhere.

Under most other circumstances, extended benefits are not a problem, but the current regime’s insistence on repeated interference in the economy is hindering what should have been a strong recovery by now, similar to previous recoveries. As this economy remains in the doldrums, tax receipts are down, and the money isn’t there to begin paying back what was dispensed out. In the meantime, unemployment benefits keep on getting extended, and since we’re running a huge deficit, this money is basically borrowed and making the hole deeper, plus there’s interest accumulating on all that borrowed money, plus all the other borrowed money not having to do anything with unemployment benefits.

Any normal person would be alarmed by these developments, but what’s rather unsettling is that Obie and his lackeys don’t seem to be bothered by any of it. They just keep on spending freely, and when the credit card limit comes into view, they immediately start up with noises about raising it. That is not the hallmark of people with even a semblance of responsibility.

To a certain extent, she is correct but totally misleading and dangerously stipid.

Giving someone money to sit on their butt does contribute to the income of the vendor that deals directly with the recipient of the government check. You can call that; “saving a job” of the vendor or part of his job.

But…the money to distribute to pay the guy to sit on his butt so he can buy his twinkies doesn’t just appear from nowhere. It is taken from productive taxpayers and jobs that the productive could have “saved” are lost.

If the money isn’t extracted from a productive person, it is printed and everyone’s real standard of living is decreased by stealth (inflation will eventually provethis out no matter how magical Bernanke thinks his models are )

The only way that net jobs might be created from robbing the productive to give to the unproductive and give a cut to the middleman known as government is if the recipient invests the money in a productive manner (i.e. not buying twinkies or minutes on his Obamaphone) and creates goods whose value far exceeds the input cost.

Yeah, and the best way to eliminate a federal deficit is to increase government spending …. NOT!

This country is doomed if this is the best we can do when it comes to elected officials …

  • Blacque Jacques Shellacque

…and creates goods whose value far exceeds the input cost.

And the list of those goods that the government creates that far exceeds the input cost is very, very, very small.
