Oh Brother… WaPo Associate Editor Compares Obama’s Newtown Speech to Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago…
Washington Post associate editor David Maraniss compared Barack Obama’s Sandy Hook memorial speech tonight to Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
Lincoln wrote his speeches, was fighting a Civil War and actually matched his words with deeds. Obama has done nothing on the weapons front except run guns to Mexico.

Charles Krauthammer called the same speech highly political.

    I don’t care what Obama says. This tragedy could have been prevented. This nation needs to find its way back to God and if that seems naive so be it. There is a respect that all of us must have for ourselves and others. I cannot get all excited about a president that

    And Obama voted no, to assistance of botch partial birth abortions. And Obama called a baby a punishment for a teenager. ” if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby,” Obama’s words.

    Barack Obama made at least 7 controversial votes against bills mandating
    medical care for newborn children after late-term, botched abortions
    known as D&E; procedures.

    Obama was there with memorized speech, made by some speechwriter even if he say he wrote it himself. That is highly doubtful.

    For the devotees of this president, this goes in one hear and out the other. Obama should have quit after speech on Friday.

    Almost all of the public-policy discussion about Newtown has focused on a debate over the need for more gun control. In reality, gun control in a country that already has 200 million privately owned firearms is likely to do little to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals. We would be better off debating two taboo subjects — the laws that make it difficult to control people with mental illness and the growing body of evidence that “gun-free” zones, which ban the carrying of firearms by law-abiding individuals, don’t work.

    Obama is directly responsible for the mass shooting of hundreds of innocents through his drone program. Are you telling me he cares about white American children that got gunned down, when he personally directs drone strikes that NYU and Princeton have documented have slaughtered hundreds upon hundreds of little children?

    Unintended casualties don’t make the extra-legal killing by Obama any better. He knows his approach kills the innocent. He keeps doing it. It’s not made any better because Obama “intends well.” A mother of a dead child doesn’t care that Obama intended not to kill her baby.

    Crocodile tears are what this President sheds. More dead white American children are good news because he can seize guns and command more power, leaving even more vulnerable to a government that has failed in its mental health care duties. Dead brown babies in Pakistan and Afghanistan? Sucks to be you, kid.

You can easily dismiss him because of what you think he is or isn’t doing for you, but was he entirely wrong in what he said tonight? If any one of you thinks that inaction is the proper course, you are not human. We are not discussing drone attacks, we are not discussing abortion, we are discussing the massacre of innocent American citizens by others. Perhaps you believe that abortion is just as wrong as these killings, but please tell that to the parents of those poor children in Newtown and let’s see what they have to say about that.

    it’s his hypocrisy that is upsetting. he doesn’t seem to care about the innocent children
    killed by drones or by late term abortion, and the fact that he decides he will appear to
    address this tragedy is repugnant to many of us, because we feel that his appearance
    is more about him and his agenda than it is about the grieving families. he should’ve checked his agenda at the door…this was not the time or place for it.
    everyone here knows the argument is coming, and it’s frustrating because the left owns
    the message in the news, movies, tv, and pop culture. what’s worse (and nauseating to most of us here) is that the president of the united states would capitalize on the deaths
    of these precious children for his own personal gain. we know the narrative only too well,
    and most here believe we are on the right side of it.

    I watched the speech. I know, I know, but up until that point it was uplifting with all the prayers. It started out ok by quoting some scripture, but he doesn’t know how to connect the words to the tragedy so it seemed disjointed. Then in the middle he jumped to you can’t raise your kids by yourself, you need help. It was the whole it takes a village meme. Then he jumped again to he will use whatever power in his office to do something to stop future shootings. He never did mention gun control but you knew that’s what he was talking about. Why did he have to have his seal of the president on the podium above the table with the candles? We know he’s the prezzy.

    What we need to do is bring back decency to America. We need to stop the media from promoting violence — we need to believe again that marriage is between one man and one woman and that every life has meaning. God who has become an enemy of this administration and the youth culture — needs to make a comeback. Perhaps if we stop hating each other than guns will not even be the topic of conversation.

    We have been told that The American Dream is out of most people’s reach. But if we don’t strive for something positive — then all we have left is the search for our 15 minutes of fame to prove we existed.

    Big Government generates more paperwork for schools than their own students. Medical professionals fill out more forms to satisfy Big Government than they do on their patients. Maybe getting Government out of the way so the real professionals can do their jobs just might help prevent such needless tragedies in the future.     Something has changed since Obama took office. Just yesterday the place where my husband worked had a shooting. 4 blocks from where I lived as a child had a gang shooting, the hospital where I was born was shot up and even the street where my father was born was the scene of a murder.

    Mr friend in NYC lived just down the block from where a man was murdered on the street at 2 PM in the afternoon a couple of days ago.

    Its touching all of us now.

    Getting rid of guns won’t stop the violence — but its a good excuse for getting us to accept what Obama really wants.

    Comparison, huh? First off, a true comparison does NOT mean an equivalence.

    Here’s the comparison that I see, and it’s not exactly favorable to Obama:

    Lincoln’s speech: short, humble, sorrowful, minimally political

    Obama’s speech: overly long, self-indulgent, sorrowful, highly political

    Lincoln predicted the world would not remember what was said at Gettysburg. Except for his own little speech, he was correct.

    Remains to be seen whether anyone will recall a single thing Obama said at Newtown.

    As I piece together the information it appears to be a “perfect storm.” The mom, an active gun owner (I have guns but they are hidden) did not secure the guns in the house. That’s probably why she never let anyone in – she might have kept her guns out all the time. Coupled with a mentally ill son who plays Call of Duty, a mesmerizing shooting game, and you have this tragedy. The mom should have hidden the guns. Of course Barky and the libs make the non sequiter that this tragedy is more evidence that law abiding Americans need to lose their guns.

    Obama’s speech was nothing more than agitating. He was taking the grief and coming anger and getting ready to try to “ORGANIZE” us. Alinsky said almost in his dying breath (in his last major interview with Playboy Mag) that he wants to ‘ORGANIZE THE MIDDLE CLASS” and this is the goal. Agitate, play on our fears and anger and get us to accept the changes he believes need to happen for whatever evil reason.

    Call me crazy if you like, but I believe the shooting in AZ, and CT, were both orchestrated. It might be an ugly thing to hear, but I believe Obama, Ayers, Dohrn, the MB, and the UN are behind it.

    ork to nab guns, they orchestrated the AZ shooting. When that didn’t work, they targeted children. We are normal people, and couldn’t concieve of doing something this evil. Ayers, Dohrn, Obama, and others aren’t. Remember Ayers said, “Kill you parents.” Remember also that he and Dohrn, praised Charles Manson for their killings, and called it cool.

    I think they’re so desperate to gain control of the population, that they are so desperate to nab guns, that they felt murdering children, would be what finally does that. We’ll see. It’s that gut feeling, that knot in the pit of your stomach that tells you something. Instinct, I guess.

    Just remember Hitler murdered 6 million Jews, and many others. I think Ayers and others have recruited both of these shooters, as their own suicide martyrs. I think in their minds, if the shooters implicated any of them, they would just call them crazy.

    Obama vs. God

    I watched Obama’s speech last night in Newton, CT. It actually surprised me how often he referenced God in that speech. I humbly submit, however, that he doesn’t actually believe a word of what he said. Here’s what he said, and why I don’t buy it:

    “We’ll make mistakes, we’ll experience hardships and even when we’re trying to do the right thing, we know that much of our time will be spent groping through the darkness, so often unable to discern God’s heavenly plans.”

    “And that’s what should drive us forward in everything we do for as long as God sees fit to keep us on this Earth.”

    “God has called them all home.”

    According to Obama, God has a plan for all of us. It is God’s decision alone when to take us from this life. And when God decides we are done here, that’s it.

    And yet, Obama continues:

    “If there’s even one step we can take to save another child or another parent or another town from the grief that’s visited Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek and Newtown and communities from Columbine to Blacksburg before that, then surely we have an obligation to try.”

    “In the coming weeks, I’ll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens, from law enforcement, to mental health professionals, to parents and educators, in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this, because what choice do we have?”

    In other words, on one hand, Obama acknowledges that God (1) has a plan for us, (2) that plan is unknown to us, and (3) it is God’s decision to take us when he sees fit.

    On the other hand, Obama goes on to say that he, through legislation and executive fiat, can intercede and alter whatever plans God has for us. He, Obama, can alter the future, despite what God has planned.

    Arrogant doesn’t begin to describe it.

    Whether you believe in God or not, it is clear that Obama doesn’t really believe what he says. Either he believes God has a plan for us or he believes that he, Obama, has the power to write his own plan. The fact that he’s willing to stand up and give a speech that is openly contradictory and irreconcilable, and try and sell it a grieving nation to amass some political capital makes me sick.

    Obama’s tears displayed on television for the cameras mean nothing. He has never wept for the unborn.

    His policies allow for US tax monies to be used for overseas abortions. Now that is a reason for Obama to weep. Don’t hold your breath.

    course the idea that the Government derives it’s power from the consent of the governed… was exposed as a giant lie…. As I do believe the states that comprised the CSA withdrew their consent. Yep… FORCE ruled the day and has continued ever since.

  • Especially for a biographer, Maraniss has a weak grasp of history. It took 13 years for the Gettysburg Address to get much notice, and to start to become what it stands for today. Does he really think ANYONE will even have the haziest recollection of Obama’s speech in 2025? (Besides Obama, of course; he’ll probably feature it in his fourth or fifth autiobiography).
