Obamacare Fee of $63 Per Person Will Begin in 2014

Most Americans will likely face a $63-per-head Obamacare fee in 2014 to pay for those with pre-existing conditions. Under Obama’s plan insurance companies will be unable to turn away individuals with pre-existing conditions starting in 2014.

The Washington Times

Your medical plan is facing an unexpected expense, so you probably are, too. It’s a new, $63-per-head fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Obama’s health care overhaul.

The charge, buried in a recent regulation, works out to tens of millions of dollars for the largest companies, employers say. Most of that is likely to be passed on to workers.

Employee benefits lawyer Chantel Sheaks calls it a “sleeper issue” with significant financial consequences, particularly for large employers.

“Especially at a time when we are facing economic uncertainty, [companies will] be hit with a multimillion-dollar assessment without getting anything back for it,” said Mr. Sheaks, a principal at Buck Consultants, a Xerox subsidiary.

Based on figures provided in the regulation, employer and individual health plans covering an estimated 190 million Americans could owe the per-person fee.

The Obama administration says it is a temporary assessment levied for three years starting in 2014, designed to raise $25 billion. It starts at $63 and then declines.

Most of the money will go into a fund administered by the Health and Human Services Department. It will be used to cushion health insurance companies from the initial hard-to-predict costs of covering uninsured people with medical problems. Under the law, insurers will be forbidden from turning away the sick as of Jan. 1, 2014.

But it’s just a temporary tax… Right?

“Most of the money will go into a fund administered by the Health and Human Services Department”. Now just what could go wrong with that? A government agency run by incompetent bureaucratic with no over site or consequences if they (and they will) screw up.

  • Highlander

And when the shortfalls begin (and we all know they will) that “temporary” fee will not only become permanent, it will probably skyrocket …

Obama is like a scavenger, pick every bone clean.

vulture is more like it and he is picking our pockets clean.

There has got to be something illegal about Obama care but the Supreme Court is too stupid to find it or getting a kick back.

  • Freddy

Something is completely amiss in this. I am not aware of any regulatory body that can randomly assign new fees.

How long until this new tax by regulation ‘authority’ is found to be unconstitutional? Before you laugh and point fingers at the courts, every regulatory boday does have clearly written limits. Someone needs to find out what part of the obamacare law allows these regulations.

Insurance companies and essentially doctors too, are now an extension of the federal government. From healing to mitigation.

    John Roberts can bite me.

Obamacare is 2000+ pages of vague legislation, chock full of clauses that allow for rules and regulations “to be determined” at a later date by persons unnamed. But, we had to pass the bill to find out what was in it, right?

  • squeaky

“Obamacare is 2000+ pages of vague legislation..” and aren’t they still adding to it as we write? even passing the bill was no guarantee we’d find out what’s in it. we may find it to be a tool used to punish or reward…….

  • Limousine Barry

    That is just the start!

Next, I’ll hike it to $163 per person!

I say tax the rich, the middle-class and the poor! Ha-ha!

  • hermie

Of course the fund will be used to pay for other programs created by HHS which were never written into the law but once in place will be called ‘vital’. Any attempt to cancel these progams will be called ‘cruel’, ‘heartless’, ‘evil’ and of course, ‘racist’.

Much worse, this is the small tip of the iceberg. Just wait for the confiscation of wealth.

Mainly the over 1 trillion in 401k’s and IRA’s and other savings.

This is what will spark a war. Take all a man has worked his life for and he will

be willing to die fighting. Kinda funny, our founders willingly gave thier lives, fortunes

and honour for this country. We have to be cornered to do so.

  • Bigkahuna

We still need to fight this power and money grab. State levels and in elections. Repeal this crap , repeal the fees since HHS sec can pass it. The next one can undo it and change and wreck the law. It can’t stand. It’s unconstitutional and will speed the bankruptcy of the country.

  • Bigkahuna

Also if the idiot top caves on taxes just add in repeal of obamacare into the bill. Screw the bastages.

Where’s the info on every american being mirco-chipped? Afterall, government needs to prove who you are and have direct withdrawal from your checking account to ensure each person pays their fair share. Isn’t that called a garnishment? Shouldn’t that have a court order? Oh yeah, it’ll have all your bio-metric data for health purposes too, but that was an after-thought.

    Chip time. Start the beheadings.

I have to wonder how long after O gets his grubby hands on this new found money, will he also steal it like LBJ stole S.S.?

Obama and his lefties, have already dipped into Federal workers retirement accounts, yes the story came out last year, but not reported much!

The left loves to tax for new programs, it soon becomes their private cookie jar! Then when they are broke again, they will levy another tax!

  • feduptoo

P.S. Illegal aliens are exempt from purchasing health insurance, we are still on the hook for them!

Lefties love illegals and other foreigners….he has also increased foreign aid by 80%.

You all wanted this idiot in office with his Obamacare, tax the rich (but is really is tax all), deplete the military, union thug…you dummies…can cry all you want…IT IS TOO LATE…

“Sleeper Issue”? He!! no, this is a common sense consequence. Try walking into your insurance agent tomorrow and taking out an auto policy on a totaled vehicle. Or ask about a life insurance policy post-mortem. Of course there is a steep price tag to insuring pre-existing conditions – and the cost for that risk is going to be spread out to one and all as a shared expense. Did anybody really not see this coming? Seriously?

  • DockyWocky

I wonder how many illegal aliens are going to be paying their fair share?

  • Lightwave

    And that $63 becomes $630, then $6,300.

Pay your fee to have insurance, comrade.

You can’t? Then pay your fee to not have insurance, comrade.

You can’t? Then off to the gulag with you, comrade.

    Confederacy of the unfit.
Ineptocracy. This word best decries where our Country is headed: a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

  • That’s why they hurried to shove this atrocity down our thoats, all this was hidden, remember what Pelosi said: “We have to pass the bill to see what’s in it.” What kind of country do we live in when these losers can take over America’s healthcare? United Socialist States of America.

  • LetsBeReasonableFolks

I am surprisednat what a small sum it costs to insure people with pre-existing conditions, and frankly, if the sum is that small I fully support it and gladly pay what ammounts to the cost of a night out to offer folks who are sick medical care.

  • Jan

This is JUST THE BEGINNING !!! “O” won’t be happy until we all live in huts !!!!!

  • American Woman

This is the charge for those with per-existing conditions. What’s the charge for the illegal aliens? What’s the charge for those on welfare?

  • Cost still Rising

It always starts out as a small amount LetsBeReasonableFolks . You think they ever hit anyone with a GIANT amount? Sales tax in my state started as 1% and now it’s 7%. I believe income tax was less than 1% and for people making 10s of thousands in 1913. This small amount isn’t that small and will squeeze people that are already flat broke. It’s 63 bucks per insured person. That’s 252 dollars for a family of four that already cannot afford to go out. They’ll also be paying more for those medical device taxes of 2.3%. When 63 dollars isn’t enough, don’t worry, It’ll go up and you’ll need to stay home 365 to do your part. Government doesn’t lower cost. Look at college tuition. State runs schools with federal grants and loans yet they are very expensive.

  • Bloomin Idiot

HHS needs all that money for Planned Parenthood to give out free contraception, abortions and the FREE mamograms that they have NEVER provided to anyone.
