Striking Workers Kill Hostess – 18,000 Workers Laid Off

Striking workers forced Hostess to close its doors and lay off 18,000 employees.

NBCDFW reported:

Hostess, the makers of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread, is going out of business after striking workers failed to heed a Thursday deadline to return to work, the company said.

“We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike,” Hostess CEO Gregory F. Rayburn said in announcing that the firm had filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to shutter its business. “Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.”

Hostess Brands Inc. had earlier warned employees that it would file to unwind its business and sell off assets if plant operations didn’t return to normal levels by 5 p.m. Thursday. In announcing its decision, Hostess said its wind down would mean the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes and 570 bakery outlet stores in the United States.

Hostess suspended bakery operations at all its factories and said its stores will remain open for several days to sell already-baked products.

What is there to say? This is Hostess’ second trip to the bankruptcy court in recent years, they have been warning the unions that they did not have the funds for extended strikes and that they could either come to a deal or the company would simply go the dissolution route. They closed 3 plants early in the week specifically because of this issue. The Baker’s Union found that its game of brinksmanship was more important than the jobs if 18,000 workers. I hope they enjoy the tremendous drop in their union membership.

Unfortunately, it is the rest of us that are going to have to pick up the tab for unemployment for a fair number of these folks.

Well that’s a lot fewer workers paying union dues and ready for foodstamps. Great job unions. I guess it’s time you take those dues and buy the company instead of liberal politicians and put your money where your mouth is. Will be waiting……

    Thanks unions. Great job guys.

Unions, spreading happiness wherever they appear.

UNIONS SUCK the life out of business.
    RIP Twinkie HoHo DingDong.

Don’t worry, union members, with all your high-demand skills of… dumping flour and stuff into tubs and … mixing it around and … moving trays in and out of an oven, you’ll find work any minute now.

  • Objective Analysis

Look at these Union Workers “who is going to bail me out now?” Unbelievable. 15% unemployment (Food lines like Great Depression) here we come.

At least Flotus is happy that nobody will be eating these sweets per her nutrition czar movement. LOL!

OMG! They shot Twinkie the Kid!

Shot him down like a dog.

It is more than just the 18,000 workers of hostess that get hurt. Tax revenue from all of the plants and stores, the entire material supply chain of raw product, packaging, in-bound deliveries, will all be affected too.

This is going to really hurt. Hurt that is everyone but the union management. They’ll be just fine.

  • Fuquay Steve

If it wasn’t the unions it would have been bloomberg and/or moochelle.

  • Dave-O

Yeah, well, but we all have “free” birth control. All is well.

  • Jerry C

Yey. More people on unemployment improves the economy with more unemployment checks being spent!! per Pelosi (*sarc)

A sad day. Killed by inflation and greedy union workers. Don’t give me any of this junk that it is the union bosses that are bad…it is the workers that push the greed button. And you know what? If they didn’t have to pay union dues they would keep more of the money they earned. If they wouldn’t vote for Dems and their policies they would keep yet more of the money they earned.

You squeeze the lemon as hard as you can for all of its juice, but the lemon is never the same.

One more piece of Americana that I grew up with falls victim to Obama and his transformation of America. Maybe I’ll go by a snowball and peel off the skin one last time like I used to do as a kid. It’s like watching a parent die slowly from a terminal illness.

We already have that kind of unemployment and have done for some time now. They just jerry-rig the figures so it isn’t so apparent by dropping everyone who runs out of unemployment before finding a job from the statistics and counting people who only work one day a week as “employed.”

Back in the 70s when we had huge unemployment it was very visible with lines out the door and around the block from the time the unemployment office opened in the morning until they closed at night, every day of the week. These days that is hidden because people no longer have to make a weekly trip to the unemployment office – everything is done over the phone or the internet.

A better indicator is the number of food stamp recipients. We added nearly a million new food stamp recipients in a single month according to the latest report, (I believe it is for the month of September.) There are more people on food stamps than there have ever been at any time since the program was started.

This is one of the first casualties, and I promise it won’t be the last. Look at the list of Obama Gov. subsidized green energy companies that have filed for bankruptcy, and the long list of them that are already looking at the bankruptcy door. So we have no green energy that was promised by Obama, and we have increased EPA regulations that have killed off coal, and no drilling for oil/gas allowed. Will someone please tell me how Americans can live with NO energy especially with winter around the corner? When you consider what is actually happening in the country, the fiscal cliff becomes almost moot. Welcome to Obama’s real transformation of America.

We want more stuff even if it kills us! The union attitude mirrors the electorate’s. I wonder if any of these morons say “Oops.”

  • thescribbler

Of course you’ll never see these 18k people in the unemployment numbers. Did a lot of good paying those union dues….not!
