Striking Workers Kill Hostess – 18,000 Workers Laid Off

Striking workers forced Hostess to close its doors and lay off 18,000 employees.

NBCDFW reported:

Hostess, the makers of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread, is going out of business after striking workers failed to heed a Thursday deadline to return to work, the company said.

“We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike,” Hostess CEO Gregory F. Rayburn said in announcing that the firm had filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to shutter its business. “Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.”

Hostess Brands Inc. had earlier warned employees that it would file to unwind its business and sell off assets if plant operations didn’t return to normal levels by 5 p.m. Thursday. In announcing its decision, Hostess said its wind down would mean the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes and 570 bakery outlet stores in the United States.

Hostess suspended bakery operations at all its factories and said its stores will remain open for several days to sell already-baked products.

What is there to say? This is Hostess’ second trip to the bankruptcy court in recent years, they have been warning the unions that they did not have the funds for extended strikes and that they could either come to a deal or the company would simply go the dissolution route. They closed 3 plants early in the week specifically because of this issue. The Baker’s Union found that its game of brinksmanship was more important than the jobs if 18,000 workers. I hope they enjoy the tremendous drop in their union membership.

Unfortunately, it is the rest of us that are going to have to pick up the tab for unemployment for a fair number of these folks.

  • Bigkahuna

Well that’s a lot fewer workers paying union dues and ready for foodstamps. Great job unions. I guess it’s time you take those dues and buy the company instead of liberal politicians and put your money where your mouth is. Will be waiting……

  • Robert

    Thanks unions. Great job guys.

    another union victory

UNIONS SUCK the life out of business.
    RIP Twinkie HoHo DingDong.

  • Warthog

Don’t worry, union members, with all your high-demand skills of… dumping flour and stuff into tubs and … mixing it around and … moving trays in and out of an oven, you’ll find work any minute now.

  • Objective Analysis

Look at these Union Workers “who is going to bail me out now?” Unbelievable. 15% unemployment (Food lines like Great Depression) here we come.

At least Flotus is happy that nobody will be eating these sweets per her nutrition czar movement. LOL!

  • Warthog

OMG! They shot Twinkie the Kid!

Shot him down like a dog.

  • Spots the Dog

It is more than just the 18,000 workers of hostess that get hurt. Tax revenue from all of the plants and stores, the entire material supply chain of raw product, packaging, in-bound deliveries, will all be affected too.

This is going to really hurt. Hurt that is everyone but the union management. They’ll be just fine.

  • Fuquay Steve

If it wasn’t the unions it would have been bloomberg and/or moochelle.

  • Dave-O

Yeah, well, but we all have “free” birth control. All is well.

  • Jerry C

Yey. More people on unemployment improves the economy with more unemployment checks being spent!! per Pelosi (*sarc)

A sad day. Killed by inflation and greedy union workers. Don’t give me any of this junk that it is the union bosses that are bad…it is the workers that push the greed button. And you know what? If they didn’t have to pay union dues they would keep more of the money they earned. If they wouldn’t vote for Dems and their policies they would keep yet more of the money they earned.

You squeeze the lemon as hard as you can for all of its juice, but the lemon is never the same.

the joys of the obama second term have just begun

    soon the 47% willbe 67%

One more piece of Americana that I grew up with falls victim to Obama and his transformation of America. Maybe I’ll go by a snowball and peel off the skin one last time like I used to do as a kid. It’s like watching a parent die slowly from a terminal illness.

We already have that kind of unemployment and have done for some time now. They just jerry-rig the figures so it isn’t so apparent by dropping everyone who runs out of unemployment before finding a job from the statistics and counting people who only work one day a week as “employed.”

Back in the 70s when we had huge unemployment it was very visible with lines out the door and around the block from the time the unemployment office opened in the morning until they closed at night, every day of the week. These days that is hidden because people no longer have to make a weekly trip to the unemployment office – everything is done over the phone or the internet.

A better indicator is the number of food stamp recipients. We added nearly a million new food stamp recipients in a single month according to the latest report, (I believe it is for the month of September.) There are more people on food stamps than there have ever been at any time since the program was started.

This is one of the first casualties, and I promise it won’t be the last. Look at the list of Obama Gov. subsidized green energy companies that have filed for bankruptcy, and the long list of them that are already looking at the bankruptcy door. So we have no green energy that was promised by Obama, and we have increased EPA regulations that have killed off coal, and no drilling for oil/gas allowed. Will someone please tell me how Americans can live with NO energy especially with winter around the corner? When you consider what is actually happening in the country, the fiscal cliff becomes almost moot. Welcome to Obama’s real transformation of America.

  • Doug Wakeman

We want more stuff even if it kills us! The union attitude mirrors the electorate’s. I wonder if any of these morons say “Oops.”

  • thescribbler

Of course you’ll never see these 18k people in the unemployment numbers. Did a lot of good paying those union dues….not!

  • feduptoo

I saw this on yahoo. Comments were overwhelmingly antiunion.

Now we all know that since Barry’s trip to NY, all is well. The lights are on, heating systems are functioning, there is plenty of food and everyone is happy. It still might be a little smelly, but when did NY not smell? As to the problems in NJ, the great and wonderful Christie Creme also has everything under control, I’m sure.

So Twinkies can survive a nuke holocaust but they can’t survive Democrat-loving unions…The Wookie must be very happy.

  • ukdon

Those of us who are past the age of 50 will find this article shocking and yet it is so very, very true.

The unions will lead us directly down this path if we let them.

  • john hawkins

Hostess is is one of the first to go “John Galt” since the election. Many to follow.

  • Aaron G.

Now the laid off workers will just collect 99 weeks of unemployment.

  • Mitch Rapp

Why can’t Obama step in and let the Post Office run the Twinkie shoppes? The can lose Billions a month and still survive – why can’t Hostess with the Mostess?

  • Lilbby

  • To Union Greedsters, Happy Holidays Asshats.

  • bigL

The Teamsters represented the other parts of the employees. so they got scrod by t he Bakers Union. Is there goingto be butt kicking soon? uh no…
And say, how much did these jobs pay? anyone see that?

  • Hera

I dislike unions but the article I read said Hostess cut the workers wages and benefits and stopped contributing to their pensions a year ago. What good is being part of a union if the company can do all that? The unions problem is that they thought management was bluffing about closing the business and they weren’t. People who support Obamacare and increased taxes on the “rich” are in for the same rude awakening when those businesses also close. The “rich” will be fine its Obama supporters who will be out in the cold literally and figuratively.

  • Trish

“… early retirement”? WTH? I’ll be working till I’m 80 … and that’s if I’m still lucky enough to have a job.

  • senah

Wonder what Twinkies will go for on ebay?

  • donh

Will the union be grubbing off a cut of the food stamp and unemployment payments to their fired members ?

  • This is serious, I know. But what is done is done. One of my favorite movies is Zombieland…

Tallahassee: [discovers Hostess truck filled with Sno-Balls] Sno-Balls? Sno-Balls? Sno Balls? Where’s the f*ing Twinkies?
    Columbus: I love Sno-Balls.
Tallahassee: I hate coconut. Not the taste, consistency.
Columbus: [eats a Sno Ball] Fresh.
Tallahassee: Oh, this Twinkie thing, it ain’t over yet.

This story is a perfect illustration of why conservatives will never win the culture war. Go over to Hot Air and read Ed’s predictable post on this. I mean, my God, the Left managed to make Romney look like a lying killer because a company he once worked for laid off a few people and here we’ve got an American icon, the Twinkie, MURDERED by the liberal leftist unions and jerks like Ed won’t take sides. It really would be funny if it weren’t so damn sad. True conservatives have GOT to get rid of the Ed Morrissey’s of the internet. The internet had so much promise and it’s gone to waste. Blogs that pass for conservative are either run by idiots like Ed or they take their cue from idiots like Ed or their comments sections have been completely taken over by liberal activists. It’s infuriating to see it happen.

No sympathy here for the bakers union. Only for the teamsters that did ratify the new contract. The teamsters should let the others know how they feel loosing their jobs. Happy Holidays baker’s union. You get what you deserve.

  • Finncrisp

This is what unions do – stand on their principles and then stand in the unemployment line. Great job.

  • garrettc

Unionized labor and employers must live in balance to exist. The management of Hostess did not adapt to changing food tastes in the market and lost market share. Unionized labor can never adapt to lower market share, and so it accelerates the demise of the employer. It is the natural end of Unionized employement.

  • Trevino

Because of the bakers union, 18k more have been added to unemployment line.

Maybe those 18k can apply at Walmart since the employees there are planning to walk out on black friday.

  • dwd

No pity for anyone who was in the union. Sympathy to any bakers at Hostess who were not in the union, if there were any.

  • Blacque Jacques Shellacque

I wonder if any of these morons say “Oops.”

Maybe when their unemployment finally runs out.

  • Joanne

These union workers just can’t fathom that they work for a business that needs to make some sort of profit or at least break even in order to stay in business. In these times, they think it is the best for them to strike to demand more monies, etc. I wonder if they would be open to having their wages reduced in order for the business to remain viable – no hope in h*ll for that, I’m sure. Unions have been closing businesses down for decades. Unfortunately, union heads usually seem to make the decisions, and they are always hard-core and never have given a crap about the workers.

  • dw dude

a new American revolution is coming…prepare yourselves.

  • Blacque Jacques Shellacque

Unfortunately, union heads usually seem to make the decisions,…

It’s worth pointing out that when a unionized outfit closes and the workers are let go, the union bosses still get their pay.

  • DomesticGoddess

Take that, Hostess! We really taught you a lesson not to mess with us!

  • I did not raise my kids on Hostess snacks, could not afford them. Little Debbies all the way here LOL but this morning, I went out and bought a variety of Hostess cakes. I was on a mission. They had only a few boxes of the Twinkie left on the shelf… tons of the raspberry Zingers though *uck*, but I was SO disappointed, because the ONLY Hostess treat I personally like is the Ding Dong (from childhood) and they were all OUT. :/

Patty cake, patty cake, bakers union man,
Bake me a bankruptcy as fast as you can.
    Protest and be stubborn
    And take a fatal stand

  • Kenseth20

The unions are of no use to this country anymore & the only people that profit from them are the union bigwigs like Richard “Jabba the Hut” Trumpka.Congratulations to having all of your union members unemployed.I’m sure Omuslim will keep them all nice & fat on food stamps.

  • American Patriot

My brother is a teamster driver for Hostess. Over the past several years, his union has agreed to several pay and pension adjustments in order to keep the company running. He told me the day before this happened that all Hostess wanted was for the baker’s union to make some concessions too, but they refused. The company told them time and again this would ultimately be the outcome if they didn’t concede something. They refused to listen and now the parasite has killed the host(ess). The teamsters are pissed at the bakers, and nobody won.

My brother said none of drivers got a paycheck today and many of them just went home, despite having deliveries to make for one last day. He stuck with it and went out on his route, as did a few others. He has no idea what the future holds for him or Hostess, he just wants to do his job, collect his pay and be a contributing member of society.

Instead, he said he’s going to get food stamps and Obama money, which he thinks the bakers wanted all along anyway.

This may be mean, but to bad that the workers lost their jobs. America voted for this and America deserves more layoffs!

[In a case study of cutting your nose off despite your face, union members who walked out on strike at bankrupt Hostess Brands (makers of Twinkies and other well known products) and refused to return to work by yesterday have forced the company into liquidation. Of the 18,000 workers who will lose their jobs, about one-third were union members]

  • Oh My, what will we fat people do?

  • SacTownMan

Just wait till next weeks Pravda Media headlines read

“And there was an “unexpected” 18,000 rise in new unemployment claims this past week”

America voted to keep these idiots in control!!

Worthless union goons and the Democrats are destroying this Republic.

Hundreds of thousands of American workers can look forward to working 28 hour work weeks next year as a result of Barry Care!!

This is just the start of the collapse of our economy. If Barry is allowed to increase taxes on the “wealthy” to pay for all of his “Investments” you will see a depression grip this country that will take a decade to recover from!!

Just remember you read it here!!

What I would like to see is Bane Capital buy it up, move it to a right to work state and start up operations in a non union shop, and see about 18,000 jobs spring up. Then Romney can give the bammer and his unionistas a great big rasberry.
