According to a new book by the Wall Street Journal’s Stephen Moore the top ten percent of income earners in the United States pay almost half (45 percent) of the country’s total taxes.

Kerry Picket at The Washington Times reported:

The Wall Street Journal’s Stephen Moore has just come out with a new book titled Who’s the Fairest of Them All?: The Truth about Opportunity, Taxes, and Wealth in America and he reveals some interesting information about how much the top ten percent of income earners in the United States pay in federal income taxes as opposed to any other industrialized nation in the world.

According to Moore, these earners pay almost half (45 percent) of the country’s total taxes. This conclusion flies in the face of the liberal concept that top earners in the U.S. are not paying their “fair share” in taxes. Moore explains:

“The United States is actually more dependent on rich people to pay taxes than even many of the more socialized economies of Europe. According to the Tax Foundation, the United States gets 45 percent of its total taxes from the top 10 percent of tax filers, whereas the international average in industrialized nations is 32 percent. America’s rich carry a larger share of the tax burden than do the rich in Belgium (25 percent), Germany (31 percent), France (28 percent), and even Sweden (27 percent).”

Moore also delves into what the “47 percent” of America actually pays and receives from the federal government and that the perception that the middle class is shrinking is a myth. In fact, the actual trend has been an upward mobility and a better standard of living for the middle class and lower income earners in the last 25 years.

Of course, Obama’s economic plan is based on taking more from the rich.

  5. Let me be clear, I take exception to that chart!

The rich American Politicians don’t pay any taxes!

Take some of the richest American Politicians like democrat Nance Pelosi and I. We have never paid any net taxes! We spend the Tax Payer’s on lush salaries for ourselves!

And, that goes for my thousands of cronies! Not one of them is below the poverty line. Ha-ha!

It’s no secret why American’s are almost bankrupt. We spend all of their money!

When the Tax Payer’s money is gone – we run up the Tax Payer’s credit card… and their children’s credit card… and their children’s credit card. It’s a great scam!

  7. I don’t think this number and this chart is meaningful in any way. The question is, what is the top 10 per cent’s share in taxes compared to their share of income. Say, the top 10% gets 90% of national income (like in many African countries where the rulers distribute billions in foreign help, and the rest live on a dollar a day). Then paying 45% of nation’s taxes isn’t that much.
Conversely, if the society is very egalitarian, and top 10% make 45% of national income, and pay 45% of tax share – it will point to a flat tax.
So, this is one number of two-part equation, and therefore meaningless. I respect Steve Moore very much; so I believe that something is missing from this article, and not from his book…

  8. Felix, your logic escapes me. But then again, I’m not a Socialist.

You know as well as I do that the poorest of the “poor” in the United States could be earning $20,000/year at McDonalds if they wanted to. That’s a far cry from a dollar a day. Most people who fail to earn a respectable living in America do so out of choice, and in the relatively few instances when they can’t, we have plenty of social programs in place to help them out.

Given that fact, there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for expecting the “rich” to dump more and more of their wealth into the hands of politicians to “redistribute” as they see fit. Nearly half of us are paying no federal income tax at all, and many of us are even collecting money we didn’t pay in. We should ALL be paying some share of what it costs to operate the government, because if we were, we would be far less likely to tolerate the pandering and corruption that’s currently running rampant in Washington.

Entitlements and handouts have caused millions of people to become dependent on the government, and less responsible for their own lives. We’re losing the work ethics that made this country great, and creating a huge class of unmotivated parasites in the process. It’s a recipe for disaster, and it runs completely contrary to every principle upon which this country was founded…

It’s not a sin to be successful and wealthy, nor is it anything to be ashamed of, and it’s CERTAINLY not something we should be punished or penalized for. Most of those wealthy people got that way through innovation, creativity, hard work, and resourcefulness, and they created jobs for millions of other Americans in the process. Heaping additional taxes on them will only result in two things … fewer rich people, and fewer jobs.

I wish I knew how to defuse the class warfare that’s sweeping through this country, but envy and hatred are being drummed into the heads of so many people now that we’ve become a house divided against itself. It starts at an early age in our public schools, and is reinforced through our media , our colleges, and most recently, our President. It’s tearing this country apart, and anyone who participates in it or promotes it should be ashamed of themselves …

  9. It’s simple math. The US shows up on that chart of nations as the most tax burdened because the TOP 10% of the US controls a much larger percent of national wealth compared to the equivalent population of TOP 10% in every other country on that list.

  10. This is only a shocker to people who drink the liberal Kool-Aid.

Yes, Obama is COMEDY GOLD… last week was more proof…

WATCH THIS — FYI, SPEW ALERT

  11. the rich don’t pay any taxes and the poor people pay all the taxes. i know because i’ve been told this all my life which has been a lot longer then the nuns at st. patrick’s grammer school ever thought it would be.

#9…the top taxpayers pay a higher percentage of taxes then the percentage of the income they make. do you have any concern for what percentage of the income that the 47% that don’t pay any federal income tax make?

  12. But zippy says they’ve earned enough.

  13. Leftists don’t CARE about how MUCH they pay. They Want It ALL!!!!!

  14. Poll the brainwashed majority and they’ll tell you it’s still not enough.

    “Keep Obama in president!”

    Four more weeks!!
