Maybe Obama can run on his food stamp record tonight in his DNC speech?
After all, Democrats believe it’s one of the great American success stories.

One in seven Americans is on food stamps. According to the left, this high rate of participation is part of what makes America exceptional. So boasts liberal political commentator Alan Colmes in Monday’s Wall Street Journal op-ed “How Democrats Made America Exceptional.”
Since the food stamps program began in the 1960s, the participation rate has soared from roughly one in 20 Americans to where it is today. Apparently, this is the liberal idea of progress.
And so anxious are they to make even greater strides that the Department of Agriculture was busily working to recruit more participants.
Today, the food stamps program is one of the largest and the fastest growing of the roughly 80 welfare programs funded by the federal government. Since 2000, spending has nearly quadrupled, with much of the growth taking place over the last four years. Since President Obama came to office, food stamps spending doubled from roughly $39 billion in 2008 to an estimated $85 billion in 2012.

This is my guess at liberal reasoning: We should be proud that America has the ability to support all of these people who cannot work. Third world countries let their poor die; we support them. Consequently, the more people our government supports, the “better” we are because we have systems in place to make sure that our citizens don’t starve to death.
[Not my opinion at all; just trying my hand at liberal logic. I also suspect that the country that "supports" the most people is, in their mind, the "best" in the world. ]

This is about CONTROL. Currently 1 in 7 Americans depends on Food Stamps – which directly controls the amount of food they can afford to eat. 1 in 4 American households receive some form of government assistance – which directly affects what they can afford to buy and sometimes where they can live.
When the mandatory reporting of all of your medical records to a national database begins in 2014 the government will have every scrap of information about you at its fingertips. The possibilities for misuse make Bloomberg look positively grandfatherly.
