Bummer. Peanut Butter Sandwiches Now Racist

by: JONATHON HOUSE/TRIBUNE PHOTO – Harvey Scott School Principal Dr. Verenice Gutierrez leads a talk about race with her staff just before the school year starts. Racial equity is a top focus for the school and district. (Portland Tribune)

Portland schools this year are teaching students about “white privilege.” This includes being aware of racist terms like peanut butter sandwiches.
Portland Tribune reported, via CowboyByte:

Verenice Gutierrez picks up on the subtle language of racism every day.

Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year.

“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” says Gutierrez, principal at Harvey Scott K-8 School, a diverse school of 500 students in Northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood.

“Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

Guitierrez, along with all of Portland Public Schools’ principals, will start the new school year off this week by drilling in on the language of “Courageous Conversations,” the district-wide equity training being implemented in every building in phases during the past few years.

Through intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, the premise is that if educators can understand their own “white privilege,” then they can change their teaching practices to boost minority students’ performance.

How nice. Now they’re starting off the school year by teaching white kids to hate themselves. Lovely.

    She should be fired NOW

Last I saw, Black folks too eat Peanut butter and jelly. . so do Spanish kids living in the US. . .

Send her packing with all the commie progressives

  • Adirondack Patriot

The people are nucking futs. Period.

if you live in Portland, sell your home and get the hell out. Pull your kids from these indoctrination camps.

  • Ragspierre

Am I tired of it? Oh, LOOOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG ago.

I don’t put up with it. Which is one reason I don’t live in Portland…or any place remotely LIKE it.

Also, I have come to feel that having a kid in most public schools is tantamount to child abuse. I would not expose a child to that kind of Collectivist stupid.

We DO have a culture. It is a very STRONG culture, but it is being corrupted by the likes of Bill Ayers, following along in the Frankfurt School model.

  • stonedome

this is just another example of the cancer spreading in our schools. wonder why a majority of chicago 8th graders can’t read proficiently? just take a look at the union members and their administrators. the progressives will never stop…they must be defeated.

  • iamsaved

“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?”

Well, I guess those Somali’s and Hispanics who want to live in a land free of peanut butter sandwiches should stay in the land of their forefathers where there were no sandwiches.

The horror of it all to be confronted by peanut butter sandwiches in your new country. What a shameful display of jingoism by those ugly Americans!

  • Sasja

I suppose concentrating on teaching the three R’s is too taxing for so-called teachers these days. Anyone still having a problem wondering why their precious children are leaving high school (those who don’t drop out before) not being able to read their diplomas?

  • BarkingAtTheMoon

I’ll tell you what’s really racist. Knocking that fat ugly phony on her butt and then kicking her in the head for being such a butt kissing mental retard! THESE are the people indoctrinating the children of America, and the kids don’t know any better – these nasty evil snakes just smile and talk softly, the kids accept whatever they’re told.

Parents….why are you allowing this woman to tell your children insane crap like this?

  • YouWorkForUs

I have come to the decision that the folks who call us “racists” because we disagree with BHO/his agenda/his policies; who call us “racists” because we eat PBJ are simply covering up the fact that THEY are the racists and since they can’t deal with “facts”, they deflect by pointing a finger at everyone else.

All you people out there who point a finger at us and call us “racists” remember that when you point a finger at me, you are pointing 3 fingers back at yourself! Take a good look at yourself first before you start attacking/criticizing the rest of us!

  • Mac in NM

Another over paid, over fed, under worked member of the NEA. Check out the pictures of the NEA protestors in Chicago! Different locations, same images.

  • Roland Johnson

At what point do we tell these idiots to STFU and go back to teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic.

What ever her degree is in it is not in something worth sharing with children.

Where do we go to get them fired?

  • Ripped

Amazing I guess these idiots feel they need to justify their pathetic existence and exorbitant income with some sort of teaching since they suck at the normal curriculum, like reading and math.

  • twolaneflash

Teach the 3 R’s? Most of these “teachers” can’t do one R, much less three. Where teachers have been tested, the results were like those of Chicago students – bordering on the absurdly ignorant – with the tests declared RACIST as soon as the results were published.

Does the left have a war going on with peanuts. For months we heard about kids being allergic to peanuts and dying after eating them. When that was pretty much debunked, they start on sandwiches? What’s next? Apple pie? And after that…Mom? Oh, I forgot. They’ve already started on Mom.

  • sjdauw

Another example of Political Correctness run a muck. What you call “racist” is in fact an example of the founding majority culture. Better you teach fact and history than denigrate through name calling. Your self imagined enlightenment does minorities a disservice by delaying successful societal integration. Of course this is probably your true purpose.

  • Dee Dee

She is just racist. I have never heard of hispanic students not eating sandwiches where they came from. Has she never heard of a Cuban Sandwich? If I could, I would send her one. I have never heard such idiocy in my life. It just goes to show that she knows nothing about hispanic culture. Not all hispanic countries have tacos, chimichangas, and corn tortillas as a staple. Tamales are made differently in hispanic countries depending on the country.

Nevertheless, these children are in the United States and should assimilate and what she is doing is just making them stand out. That is why there is so much discord. People like her are the ones that are dividing this country into “us and them”. Anyway, wasn’t it George Washington Carver the one credited for inventing peanut butter? Wow, the woman is really racist.

  • DINORightMarie

    Pathetic.

First, that anyone would buy into the Bill Ayers Education methodology, using “white privilidge” propaganda/garbage, is a reflection on the SCHOOL SYSTEM and the ADMINISTRATORS, not to mention the teachers. They sold their collective souls to this failed ideology long, long ago. Clean house!! Top to bottom.

Second, peanut butter is an American invention – invented by George Washington Carver, for goodness sakes!!! How can that be a racist item?! Only by people saying that if our culture has evolved to favor sandwiches on bread, then we are somehow DISCRIMINATING against any and all who were not raised in this culture.

Read Mark Levin’s books “Liberty and Tyranny” and “Ameritopia.” He covers this Marxist statist BS and indoctrination very well.

Such “social justice” and “racism means WHITES discriminate against all others” need to be removed from the classrooms of this country – elementary, middle, high schools, as well as universities.

That is a LOT of un-doing. But essential to taking our country back!

  • BurmaShave

The best way to end racism is to fire and silence racist provocateurs such as Verenice Gutierrez, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton. Institutions that deliberately hire such people and give them authority to spout off are racist. At the top of the list is MSNBC, but many schools systems, colleges and universities are just as bad.

  • Scott Lassiter

I’m going to take my ‘white privilege’ and vote for Mitt Romney. Guess I’ll need to go to a workshop after that one.

    What do you expect?

    It is Austin after all.

(OOPS! I always confuse those two self-righteous sisters of the same ideological mother.)

  • jorgen

Teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic is boring and hard work. Politicizing a sandwich is no work and is a socialist achievement.

    Just asking.

  • Annoyed In Illinois

Did anybody notice that this ignorant fat broad misspelled the word “privilege”? I suppose my correct spelling of the word is racist, too. Uh-huh.

  • Sasja

What is meant by “evidence based practices?”

It is quite obvious that not only do we need to get the grifters out of the WH, we need to work at the local level to get people like her out of our schools.

We will also need to push President Romney and the Republican Congress to eliminate the NEA, among many others that make up the alphabet bureaucracies infecting our Republic.

  • Mike

When I read such stories I think America is toast. Where do we go from here?

  • http://falcon7204.wordpress.com falcon

This is why my daughters went to private school (which, frankly, wasn’t much better).

This is why we taught our daughters the Bible.

This is why we don’t get our news solely from the alphabet networks.

This is why I am so outraged at the left right now I could chew nails and spit bullets.

  • Radegunda

“White privilege” — as though white people never did anything to build the most successful and envied civilizations in history and create the most amazing technology and beautiful monuments. As though “people of color” were not regularly pulled to the head of the line and given easier paths to the top.

  • Freddie Sykes

DINORightMarie, the great Black American George Washington Carver “invented” peanut butter in the US but other cultures, including the Aztecs, made similar preparations of peanuts. That makes peanut butter both an African American and Multicultural food.

Is she against peanut butter because of its black or Mexican roots?

  • Tim in Cali

  • scituate_tgr

AND DON”T YOU DARE SPREAD THAT P&J ON WHITE BREAD!

  • Stan

What’s more racist? Mentioning a sandwich in a lesson or assuming your non-white students (who presumably didn’t show up in America yesterday) are too dull to wrap their brains around the concept of a sandwich?

  • Nelle

This isn’t “white priviledge” they’ve discovered. It’s American culture. And no, it’s not a white culture. Ask the descendents of Asians, South Americans, Africans and Europeans who immigrated a hundred years or more ago–how did you survive the peanut butter racism? They assimilated, that’s how. They became a part of the culture, with their pasta and tacos and shrimp fried rice. We assimilated their styles and foods and customs, and they assimilated ours. Haven’t you hit a pinata, or had Asian food prepared tableside? Is cornbread stuffing and sweet potato pie a white or black addition to Thanksgiving dinner?

Assimilation. They are making it impossible with their constant dividing and separating and blaming. They pretend to know the world would be better off if it weren’t for the dreaded white skins.

I really like your post. Great insight! Remember when some schools tried to teach Ebonics?

  • justyoubelieveit

Doesn’t look like she’s missed too many peanut butter sandwiches. Just another brain damaged idiot who escaped from the village. What’s even more disturbing is that it looks like not one person in that room as the fortitude to stand up to her. They’re just sucking up the crap she is spewing like good little lap dogs. What a disgrace! How sad that children have been exposed to this cretin.

  • RickZ

Is cornbread stuffing and sweet potato pie a white or black addition to Thanksgiving dinner?

I had Hispanic stuffing in the turkey one Thanksgiving. Cornbread, chorizo, green olives and raisins. Boy was that good. So yeah, the melting pot is a good thing, and food is a great opening act in keeping that pot melted. Since she probabley can’t be fired for incompetence, screw this commie teacher and her anti-American attitude.

  • Leatherhelmet

This loon need to be fired immediately. There is a huge cult of this going on in Minnesota right now and it needs to be stopped. It is racist anti-white bigotry at its worst and parents need to play a role in halting it.

Union slugs turning children into good little sheep who can be led by the noseby government.

The government schools have already prepared millions of Americans to believe that a subprime grifter who reads inane platitudes from a teleprompter should be president of the United States. Scary stuff.

  • Doug Wakeman

She is not necessarily stupid. She is evil. The motto of the Left is “All that exists deserves to perish.” They start with their own communities and work out from there. She has no real problem with peanut and jelly sandwiches. It is America that she despises and its culture, customs, traditions, founding principles and yes, cuisine. That is all you need to know when the antics of these vile termites seem incomprehensible.

  • Jen

WTH?? Add this to the military’s newest PC crap reported last week, and pretty soon we won’t be able to talk in anything but sign language and pig Latin. Oh wait – is “pig” Latin racist??

  • cj

Isn’t it racist to suggest that white folks don’t eat pita, or Hispanics don’t eat sandwiches? God help us!

  • Blue Hen

She’s crusading against “whiteness”? So she’d be just thrilled to talk about the eeeevvvviiiilllss of “blackness” or “hispanicness” for schools that have majority ‘ethnic’ populations, right? I kinda doubt it.

  • greenfairie

What I find even more offensive than this woman’s stupidity and ignorance (two important qualifications to work in the public school system, by the way) are 1) the idea that immigrants are such delicate flowers they are devastated by anything that doesn’t reflect their own native culture–hello, these people chucked everything they knew to go live somewhere very different from their homeland and 2) anything uniquely “American” is somehow inherently offensive and must be hidden away like a dark secret.

    Eff these idiots.

  • Adirondack Patriot

The left always projects their own latent racism and bigotry on the right.

The hatred is their own. The bigotry is their own.

Look at Chris Matthews saying that food stamps are a black issue. Gingrich never said anything about black people, but Matthews injected race into the discussion.

The left are racists. Color, not ability, is what matters.

The right are capitalists. Ability, not color, is what matters.

    Period.

“When I read such stories I think America is toast.” Mike, you can’t say “toast”. That implies a pigmentation change to the bread.

  • Tammy

This turd is clearly a glittering jewel of hypocrisy…how many peanut butter sandwiches, pizzas, cakes, tubs of ice-cream, bags of chips. gallons of sodas, boxes of ding-dongs and skeins of cotton candy has she put down her pie hole, in order to have that bang’in bod she sports (last I checked, these were all American/Americanized foods)

  • Mikey

@ #48 Leatherhelmet. You are indeed correct sir about Minnesota. For many years that hotbed of communism: The University of Minnesota, has been churning out neo-marxist liberal white guilt educators, who have gone forth and multiplied ,mostly within the region.
Add to that a whole slew of newly planted Islamofascists from Somalia and you have a perfect laboratory for indoctrination of the children.
Who would even think that large parts of Minneapolis are indeed more liberal fascist than places like Boulder & Berkeley. But it’s totally true. Collectivism on the prairie is alive and well.

  • The Def Leprecon

Green olives are packaged in clear, glass jars in the store. Black olives are in cans all hidden away. Is that racist? When everything is “racist” then nothing is “racist” anymore. I’m beyond the PC crap. The teachers should get back to teaching children how to read and write and do math. Here in Chicago they are a worthless bunch of overpaid, overweight, boat owning, second home owning, send their own kids to private school, greedy arses. And they produce the stupidest kids anywhere. They have them on the picket lines with them here. This am on the news one of them was on the local Fox station and said to help the kids cope with this all they should read some book about how kids marched on the picket line and started labor strikes. Then she said by reading it it would also help them keep up academically. That’s what’s important to them. Not the kids. Indoctrination. Social causes etc. Force feeding them info about how horribly they’re being treated. Listening to that Jabba the Hut Karen Lewis this am made me want to puke. She said she doesn’t like that people are saying teachers should be happy they have a job. She’s says she’s a “public servant” not an “indentured servant.” I’d like to fire her fat a** and all the rest of them. They DO NOT care about the residents and their taxes or their children. The schools exist here to provide employment for the unions. Them feeding at the public trough comes first. We need school choice and vouchers here. CTU says charter schools aren’t even real schools. Yeah, because they’re not striking. One of their picket signs reads: “We need a fair contract for better schools.” WTH???? Good golly, get rid of them all and start over.
