US Athlete Wins Silver Medal – Carries Mexican Flag Around Track

Leo Manzano won the silver medal in the men’s 1500 meter run.
Then he carried US and Mexican flags around the track.

Manzano came to the United States when he was four.

After winning a silver medal in the 1500 meter run at the Olympics, US athlete Leo Manzano carried the US flag around the track… And the Mexican flag.
CNN contributor Ruben Navarrette Jr. added:

There is a big difference between a political protest and a concert.

Now, thanks to U.S. Olympic medalist Leo Manzano, and what I consider to be the misguided and ill-mannered way he chose to celebrate his silver medal in the 1500-meters final, I get the chance to think through the subject of flag-waving once again.

After Manzano finished his race and secured his medal, he did what athletes typically do at the Olympics. He held up his country’s flag — the Stars and Stripes.

The 27-year-old was born in Mexico, but the United States is his country now. His father migrated here illegally from the city of Dolores Hidalgo. Manzano was brought here when he was 4. Like most immigrants, they came in search of greater opportunity. And they found it — for themselves, and their children.
U.S. distance running back at Games

That little boy eventually became a U.S. citizen. And then, after a lot of hard work and thousands of hours of training, he got the chance to represent his country and compete in the Olympics. And, to put the cherry on the sundae, he actually wins a silver medal. The last time an American won a medal of any kind in the 1500 meters was 44 years ago.

You can’t help but be proud of Manzano and the country that allowed him the opportunity to fulfill his potential.

So why did Manzano carry two flags with him on his victory lap? As the world looked on, he held up both the U.S. flag and the Mexican flag. Not a good look. And not a good idea.

I was excited for Manzano during his race and his final kick to win silver. No longer. You want to make a political statement and run for Mexico, then go to Mexico and let them pay for your training. I will not support him anymore, for sure~no matter what lame excuse or spin his people may try to make of it. He showed his true colors, and they are not red, white and blue.

The US Olympic Committee should drop him like a hot potato. . or corn tortilla. . . and give his spot on the team to another qualified AMERICAN athlete.

We do not need US team members who are confused as to which country they represent

  • listingstarboard

Mexicans are the new minority to exploit for political votes, nothing else. Progressive liberals only “advocate” for blacks and Hispanics to get their votes to ensure a permanent rule of their Political class. Then they control the numbers through abortion. So far blacks have fallen for it hook line and sinker. Guess Hispanics will too.

  • Adirondack Patriot

He gets a gold medal in stupidity.

Can American descendents of German, Russian, French, British, Italian, Japan, Irish, and Japanese carry thier heritage flags?

  • Stella Baskomb

Like a team, eh? USA and Mexico together won the 1500 meters?

No doubt the Olympic Committee awarded two medals, one to the USA team member and one to the Mexican.

    No doubt.

When you race for your country, you raise the flag for that country.

My grandparents came from: Where ever. So, did yours, but just because you become a citizen even if recently, YOU BECAME A CITIZEN HERE. AND THIS IS THE NATION “YOU’ REPRESENT.

We all could carry other flags, that represent other countries our ancestors came from.

Can you imagine, how crazy that would look?

Shame on him. So, he is proud. But the Olympics is NOT the venue.

    Manzana is a bad apple.

  • Fire with Fire

Make him refund all the money spent on him to train and get him to and stay at the Olympics. Give him a one way ticket to Mexico with papers to start his Mexican citizenship and revoke his American one.

Simple and appropriate, let him live and play where his heart is. Adding the Mexican flag in such a way actually demonstrates more support for Mexico than America becuase he had to go out of his way to include the Mexican flag and at the same time cheapen the presence of the American flag. America does not need people so conflicted about their patriotism.

  • I always ask in a situation like this: how many ways are there to spell “putz?” Often it turns out to be “Obama,” or “Biden” or “Wasserman,” (etc. etc. etc.), but Manzano is the latest variant. Good, ‘cuz I was getting bored with all the other ones because they were so-o-o repetitive.

  • ladybug

One thing is for sure. ..someone taught him this because he was brought here at such a young age he has no memories of living in Mexico. I put the blame on his family for not teaching him to be a patriotic American. He should be dropped from the Olympic team and be told that because of his disgusting behavior he will never be allowed to represent the U.S. again.

  • Having vestigial sympathies for the country of your ancestors is completely natural, but this hispanic American is totally disgusted by this embarrassing display.

  • snap boy

Just one more example of why they need to go home.

  • Seth

I say strip him of his medal and let him go back to Mexico if he is so damn proud of it, renounce his U.S. citizenship, and run for them next time as a Mexican citizen..

  • Teddy

    Strip the medal.

  • Nelle

Because he’s young I’m giving him a break. I doubt he gave it any of the kind of mature thought that was called for, he just wanted to express his pride in both countries. When I was his age, maybe I could have been dumb enough to pick up the Welsh flag like he did the Mexican one. I doubt it, but maybe, in the excitement of the moment. But it wouldn’t have had the unfortunate connotations that this incident had.

  • Grandma Perkins

    Oh dear!

  • C-Christian Soldier

LA RAZA and MALDF would be PROUD!!

He should- go back to his “HOME” country if is not willing to take the oath to forsake allegiance to it–(mexico)

Does he have an US PASSPORT-if YES-
    then he took the oath!

  • paul52

Remember that saying about “biting the hand that feeds you”? Perfect example. Bad idea, wrong venue.

  • donh

Speedy Manzana has a right to carry the Mexican flag because he train running Nacho Gange across the border…>

A very clear example of why we need stricter boarder control. Illegal immigrants do not assimilate well in the US, and they teach their children to maintain allegiance to their fatherland.

Our forefathers warned us about this, and underscored the need for the US president and Vice President two be TWO generations of US citizens – i.e. the natural born citizen. Of course, Chester Arthur cheated and Barak Obama lied. Neither presidents qualify as natural born citizen. Who next? Rubio? Jindal? None of them qualify.

This guy just underscores an ever greater danger for us.

  • jim

Maybe he did it because he’s just an ungrateful bastard, just like other minority groups that love the opportunities that the US has provided for them and their families, but they’d rather not be Americans????? They’d rather have the opportunities that US citizens have, but be living somewhere else????

  • FurryGuy

So what exactly did Mexico do to help him achieve winning his silver medal beyond being the circumstantial place of his birth?

  • jim

He will definitely have to pay the IRS for that medal now. He’s going to be forced to be entered into our tax system, just like everyone else. That $15K he’s going to get is going to turn into about $8K instead. Now he’s going to know what it feels like to ‘pay the piper’ just like real US citizens do every year!!!!

  • kato

A good business decision. He’ll be embraced by liberal media. What he should do now is tell the media how frightened he was being in London with Lolo Jones. They’ll swoon over that.

I actually quit being interested in the Olympics decades ago. I think it started with those two scumbags giving the black power salute. The spectacle is tasteless and the fraudulence is palpable. Most of the athletes seem to be self-centered a-holes. I take no pride as an American in the accomplishments of this Mexican dope and certainly not in that team of tattooed subprimates.

  • dnb

Send him, his medal, his Mexican flag and his entire family back to Mexico – pronto!

  • Send the asshead home to Mexico….he’s a disgrace

  • Mikey

If he did it the way it shows in the photo (above), I think it’s very kewl.
The Stars n Stripes flown on top with the Mexican flag subordinate.
In my view hes telling the world about his heritage. Yet acknowledging he’s an American.
And that anyone can make it in America even if your parents are (legal) immigrants.

On the other hand if he waved them both all around, thats a different story

  • Colo Kid

…he’s like most of the illegals and legals who come here from south of the border. They get the full range of freebies, affimrative action included, then kick us in the teeth when the occasion arises.

  • gracepmc

Today applications (no personal interviews required) are being accepted for Obama’s amnesty by Executive Order. Expect more of this if any of them achieve anything in America. As for Mr. Manzano it is a good thing that his deserved win was individual because with his divided loyalties I surely would not want him on a team.

  • When your citizenship comes cheap (as it does with most illegal aliens), you don’t place any value on it. This is the proof.

  • Marsh626

Reminds me of the story from a year or so ago where there was a professional soccer match between a U.S. team and a Mexican team in California. The U.S team was actually being booed by the crowd. Not because they were performally poorly, but when they scored…

The crowd was full of immigrants – both legal and illegal – from Mexico. The U.S. coach said he was shocked. He said it felt like they were playing in Mexico rather than being the home team.

This is extremely symbolic of the underreported demographic revolution taking place right now throughout America. White babies are now shockingly a racial minority this year in America and Whites of all ages are shockingly estimated to become racial minorities in America in about 20 years. And “hispanics” are shockingly estimated to become the new racial majority in America by around 2050.

This should serve as a wake up call to the politically correct Right who just love to say that they’re all for legal immigration, it’s only illegal immigration they’re opposed to. Sorry to break it to you, but supporting mass immigration – whether legal or illegal – is moronic (especially if it’s coming from the 3rd world) and should NOT be supported by conservatives or the Republican Party.

  • Marsh626

  • democraps suck

Time to take the medal away and deport his a$$

  • stonedome

more proof they don’t want to assimilate…in a few years we will have national riots like france when we cut off benefits to illegals. shove that you were here first crap and get out of my country.

  • USMC Thomas

I’ll like to know what Mexico has provided or done for his welfare that he has such pride in that flag, especially since his family had to flee there illegally to survive.
This asshat is sh_tting where he eats.

  • CommieJuice

This is all how the fighters do it. They seems to love Mexico so much, but never go there. Look at the pathetic fighter in the UFC, ex Heavyweight champion who was knocked out within a minute in his first title defense, Cain Velasquez. Cain has “brown pride” tattooed on his chest, he was born in California, but still only gives credit to Mexico. Somehow Cain still got a sponsorship with MetroPCS, you can see him on their commercials sparring with his tattoo in plain sight. Jon Jones, the current Light heavyweight Champion in the UFC is also in the commercials for MetroPCS, he was drunk driving when he totaled his new Bentley, he was given a slap on the wrist by the law and a big fat American MetroPCS sponsorship contract. Apparently character doesn’t mean anything to MetroPCS and America doesn’t mean much to athletes like Leo Manzano and Cain Velasquez.

  • Mad Hatter

I’ve said on a previous post, there’s brown separatist movement in the southwest. Here’s another example of it.

  • Winston Wolfe

And this is somehow worse than the hundreds of athletes who train at our facilities, attend our universities and then go back and perform for their own country? And only their own country?

  • Kit

“Silver medal, still felt like I won! Representing two countries USA and Mexico!”, Manzano tweeted shortly after his win. Most of his tweets throughout the Olympics have been in both Spanish and English.

  • greenfairie

Reminds me of a local citizenship ceremony. Once it was over, the new “Americans” shouted, “Viva Mexico!” I wish I were just making that up.

  • Geoff

An athlete born in one nation and raised in another has brought honor to both. He carried both flags to honor both. This was entirely appropriate: Mexico is our neighbor and her people are mostly our friends.
Manzana should be the subject of praise for this gesture.

  • kathteach

I gotta say I agree with Geoff……I loved how he warps his body around the American flag and carries the Mexico flag as a “reminder”. My sister won a silver medal in the past Olympics and I sort of wish she could have carried the Irish flag as an afterthought. OK – maybe they all should carry all the flag’s of the great diaspora of civilization that brings us to 2012.

I mean – the Olympics should be about not only what country we represent, but how our place in that country plays in the world of shifting populations.

A much bigger outrage – IMHO – is that the London Olympics did not officially commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1972 murder of the Israeli Team in Munich.

Never Forget. Somehow, they chose to forget.

  • crackermike

So THIS is the guy Obama just made legal to stay in the USA and receive free education. Him and 20 million others. Obama’s gonna need em all to keep from getting his ass landslided worse than Dukakis

  • Maudie N Mandeville

Not a good look. And not a good idea. And no endorsements. “Doh!!”

  • Oldflyer

I agree with Winston Wolfe; but the persistence of foreign athletes taking advantage of our generosity will never change.

You would like to believe that this incident could be a wake-up call. But, we have had plenty of others, and persist in hitting snooze and rolling over.

We have created a huge population, and sub-culture, with mixed allegiance. Our governmental policies seem to almost deliberately undermine our national identity. Of course some politicians benefit from dependent minorities, so change is unlikely.

I fear that it will come home to roost one day as the dependent minorities approach, or even reach, majority status.

  • cp

Even as chinese and as a non American citizen not living in America, I will say that America should not let or encourage this kind of behaviour. He chose to become an American citizen and he should be patriotic to America and not keep one leg in one country and another leg in another country. When basic sense of gratitude and loyalty such as this becomes unclear, it will create a fertile ground for causing unnecessary racial division in the land you chose to live in eventually. Especially at such famous international even, he should have the decency to show respect to the nation that he has chosen to take up citizenship.

I guess Leo didn’t read the rules, you represent one country not two.

    From the Olympic Charter:

    Bye-law to Rule 42
    1. A competitor who is a national of two or more countries at the same time may represent
either one of them, as he may elect. However, after having represented one country in
the Olympic Games, in continental or regional games or in world or regional champion –
ships recognised by the relevant IF, he may not represent another country unless he
meets the conditions set forth in paragraph 2 below that apply to persons who have
changed their nationality or acquired a new nationality

We need a 20 year moratorium on immigration with few exceptions for English speakers from the Anglosphere who have extraordinary education or valuable trades. No refugees. No asylum. Fix your own homeland or perish in it.It’s not my responsibility that you have a dystopian society and your citizenry is too weak and stupid to rebel. The 13 American colonies were under a tyrannical rule and we didn’t run, we won and built the first representative republic in world history. Let’s spend the money we spend on supporting generations of black and brown foreign invaders on encouraging well-educated Whites to have multiple children. Tax credits to the sky. Student loan forgiveness. Then, when the White population returns to 80-85 percent and every citizen who wants one has a job, we can being a discussion about how to allow foreigners the privilege of EARNING American Citizenship. This Olympian is a piece of crap. We don’t need him. We shouldn’t want him here. We should be revoking his US Citizenship and sending him back to the crapheap country that is nothing more than a reflection of the inferior DNA of the Mexican people. If we traded the circa 1800 population of the USA and Mexico wholesale, the landmass called Mexico would be a functional, advanced democracy with electricity and sewage systems that work. The United States landmass would be a dungheap where cholera and typhoid are rampant and the Mexican people would still be trying to jump the border….only they’d be headed the other way. No way to deny it: that is the truth.

  • More evidence that anyone that can run, jump, or swim, left Mexico for the US a while ago.

  • EffingReally?

Seriously.. I don’t understand the issue here.. It’s not like he disrespected the flag or chose to only carry the Mexican flag.. I can’t imagine how it would feel to be first generation American and make such an accomplishment.. His family here and in Mexico must be extremely proud.. And I am too..

According to you all, America is this place where you come and renounce all your heritage and family, rather than a place where you can come.. Apply yourself, and make something of yourself..

It’s really too bad that bigotry, racism, and popr typing skills aren’t Olympic sports.. You guys would win the gold hands down!

  • ScoutII

Multiculturism is the opposite of E Pluribus Unum

  • EffingReally?

    A historty lesson for Scout:

E Pluribus Unum was never officially/legally out national motto.. Never codified by law.. In 1787 or so it was the popular phrase.. In fact it’s not even our national motto anymore.. In 1956 congress made In God we Trust our national motto..

E Pluribus Unum- out of many one.. Still doesn’t mean that you forget where you came from and deny your heritage.. It means that we all bring that with us to form a larger greater whole..
