Leo Manzano won the silver medal in the men’s 1500 meter run.
Then he carried US and Mexican flags around the track.

Manzano came to the United States when he was four.

After winning a silver medal in the 1500 meter run at the Olympics, US athlete Leo Manzano carried the US flag around the track… And the Mexican flag.
CNN contributor Ruben Navarrette Jr. added:

There is a big difference between a political protest and a concert.

Now, thanks to U.S. Olympic medalist Leo Manzano, and what I consider to be the misguided and ill-mannered way he chose to celebrate his silver medal in the 1500-meters final, I get the chance to think through the subject of flag-waving once again.

After Manzano finished his race and secured his medal, he did what athletes typically do at the Olympics. He held up his country’s flag — the Stars and Stripes.

The 27-year-old was born in Mexico, but the United States is his country now. His father migrated here illegally from the city of Dolores Hidalgo. Manzano was brought here when he was 4. Like most immigrants, they came in search of greater opportunity. And they found it — for themselves, and their children.

That little boy eventually became a U.S. citizen. And then, after a lot of hard work and thousands of hours of training, he got the chance to represent his country and compete in the Olympics. And, to put the cherry on the sundae, he actually wins a silver medal. The last time an American won a medal of any kind in the 1500 meters was 44 years ago.

You can’t help but be proud of Manzano and the country that allowed him the opportunity to fulfill his potential.

So why did Manzano carry two flags with him on his victory lap? As the world looked on, he held up both the U.S. flag and the Mexican flag. Not a good look. And not a good idea.

  1. I was excited for Manzano during his race and his final kick to win silver. No longer. You want to make a political statement and run for Mexico, then go to Mexico and let them pay for your training. I will not support him anymore, for sure~no matter what lame excuse or spin his people may try to make of it. He showed his true colors, and they are not red, white and blue.

  2. The US Olympic Committee should drop him like a hot potato. . or corn tortilla. . . and give his spot on the team to another qualified AMERICAN athlete.

We do not need US team members who are confused as to which country they represent

  3. Mexicans are the new minority to exploit for political votes, nothing else. Progressive liberals only “advocate” for blacks and Hispanics to get their votes to ensure a permanent rule of their Political class. Then they control the numbers through abortion. So far blacks have fallen for it hook line and sinker. Guess Hispanics will too.

  4. He gets a gold medal in stupidity.

Can American descendents of German, Russian, French, British, Italian, Japan, Irish, and Japanese carry thier heritage flags?

    No?

    Racists.

  5. Like a team, eh? USA and Mexico together won the 1500 meters?

No doubt the Olympic Committee awarded two medals, one to the USA team member and one to the Mexican.

    No doubt.

  6. When you race for your country, you raise the flag for that country.

My grandparents came from: Where ever. So, did yours, but just because you become a citizen even if recently, YOU BECAME A CITIZEN HERE. AND THIS IS THE NATION “YOU’ REPRESENT.

We all could carry other flags, that represent other countries our ancestors came from.

Can you imagine, how crazy that would look?

Shame on him. So, he is proud. But the Olympics is NOT the venue.

  7. Rephrase that last line. WE ARE PROUD OF OUR BEGINNINGS. BUT PRIDE WAS WHEN HE BECAME A CITIZEN. THAT SHOULD BE WHERE HIS PRIDE LIES OR JUST DON’T BECOME A CITIZEN HERE AND RUN FOR MEXICO.

  8. Manzana is a bad apple.

  9. Make him refund all the money spent on him to train and get him to and stay at the Olympics. Give him a one way ticket to Mexico with papers to start his Mexican citizenship and revoke his American one.

Simple and appropriate, let him live and play where his heart is. Adding the Mexican flag in such a way actually demonstrates more support for Mexico than America becuase he had to go out of his way to include the Mexican flag and at the same time cheapen the presence of the American flag. America does not need people so conflicted about their patriotism.

  10. I always ask in a situation like this: how many ways are there to spell “putz?” Often it turns out to be “Obama,” or “Biden” or “Wasserman,” (etc. etc. etc.), but Manzano is the latest variant. Good, ‘cuz I was getting bored with all the other ones because they were so-o-o repetitive.

  11. One thing is for sure. ..someone taught him this because he was brought here at such a young age he has no memories of living in Mexico. I put the blame on his family for not teaching him to be a patriotic American. He should be dropped from the Olympic team and be told that because of his disgusting behavior he will never be allowed to represent the U.S. again.

  12. Having vestigial sympathies for the country of your ancestors is completely natural, but this hispanic American is totally disgusted by this embarrassing display.

  13. Having vestigial sympathies for the country of your ancestors is completely natural, but this hispanic American is totally disgusted by his embarrassing display.

  14. Just one more example of why they need to go home.

  15. I say strip him of his medal and let him go back to Mexico if he is so damn proud of it, renounce his U.S. citizenship, and run for them next time as a Mexican citizen..

  16. Strip the medal.

  17. Because he’s young I’m giving him a break. I doubt he gave it any of the kind of mature thought that was called for, he just wanted to express his pride in both countries. When I was his age, maybe I could have been dumb enough to pick up the Welsh flag like he did the Mexican one. I doubt it, but maybe, in the excitement of the moment. But it wouldn’t have had the unfortunate connotations that this incident had.

  18. Oh dear!

  19. LA RAZA and MALDF would be PROUD!!

He should- go back to his “HOME” country if is not willing to take the oath to forsake allegiance to it–(mexico)

Does he have an US PASSPORT-if YES-
    then he took the oath!
