Former Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, died today at the age of 82.
“That’s one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.”

Reuters reported:

Former U.S. astronaut, Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, has died at the age of 82, U.S. media reported on Saturday.

Armstrong underwent a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on August 5, to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the moon’s dusty surface, Armstrong said: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong’s last space flight. The following year he was appointed to a desk job, being named NASA’s deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the office of advanced research and technology.

Rest in peace.

  1. God didn’t make many men such as this one.

    RIP NEIL ARMSTRONG.

  2. An exceptional American.

    That embodied American Exceptionalism.

Who knows how many humans this man inspired?

    I am one.

    Go Navy.

    RIP sir.

  3. I was 7 when Armstrong walked on the moon. After watching the live landing on TV, my dad took my family outside to look up at the moon. We stood there in awe, still finding it hard to believe that someone was actually walking around on that faraway place. I’ll never forget that moment of pure wonder – and pure pride in being an American.

    Thank You & God Bless..

you left mankind one small quote as big as the Universe..

    R.I.P. Mr. Armstrong..

  5. I sat and watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon with my Grandfather, who was 79 at the time. As we sat there the tears rolled down his cheeks and he said to me that he felt like the most blessed of men, that when he was young people traveled by horse and buggy or the train and in his lifetime he had seen cars and airplanes, radios, two world wars and here he was, watching a man walk on the moon on a television that didn’t even exist in dreams when he was a boy.

That was the last thing my Grandpa ever said to me. About an hour later he went out to the garden and when he came back onto the porch quite literally had a stroke at my feet. He learned to walk again but that was the end of his gardening days and he never did recover his ability to speak.

  6. God bless you.you will be forever missed as the first man on the moon.you will be forever missed by the united states of America.rip

  7. #2 Skinner,
Very well said and I agree with your comment. Neil Armstrong, patriot, fearless, and true American. God speed Mr. Armstrong.

  8. I’m glad I got to watch you walk on the moon. Rest in peace, with my thanks.

  9. High Flight” -by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
    – Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I was in elementary school as I watched you lower yourself down the ladder and step out onto the surface of the moon — live as it happened — on a black and white Zenith television set with rabbit ears antennas as I gobbled vanilla ice cream and munched ‘Nilla Wafers whilst sitting on the livingroom floor in my Batman pj’s. I remember that night like it was just last night. My father has it all on 8mm home movies. I was beyond captivated. The whole family was. Even as a child I had tears of joy and tears of American pride when I heard you say, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

    American exceptionalism, incarnate.

    RIP Neil Armstrong. God speed.

  10. I remember watching the moon walk on a black and white TV my Dad brought out to the service station where I was pumping gas. I had some of my friends there watching with me, all of us later became engineers. Hard to keep a dry eye as I see an Icon of my youth pass on.

Thank you and God Bless you Neil Armstrong RIP

  11. He never cashed in on the Greatest Celebrity that could ever be.
(and this one based on achievement)

once heard this cocktail party story: in a crowd of many braggadocios, each trying to top the previous egotist, one man (Neil?) quietly stated, “I walked on the Moon”.
the Ultimate shutdown putdown. I believe this is a true story, if it isn’t it should be.

there is another story specifically about Neil (you’ll hear it, again) that I do not believe.

  12. Thank You Mr. Armstrong, you made America proud.

    R.I.P.

The Eagle has landed… in Heaven.

  13. RIP Neil….. You were a true American hero. Explorer and class act.

He was from my hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio. I was about 5 years old and I barely remember it but vaguely remember the huge parade we had in our hometown sometime after. It was one of my earliest memories ever.

  14. Now compare Neil and the Occupier in Chief in the Whitehouse…

Look at the difference in class, achievment, education, humility and work ethic.

Oh forget it…thats like comparing a turd and a Rose.

The families statement was also incredibly classy, humble and an embodiement of Neil and his life.

  15. RIP Mr. Armstrong.

  16. In those moments so long ago, Neil Armstrong represented eveything that makes America the greatest nation on earth. He inspired millions and we must always be greatful. Thank You.

May God bless you and keep you, amen.

    turn up the volume!!

    ht Larse

albeit only for second or two, he’s in there!! :-)

  18. God rest your soul Neil Armstrong.

I loved the space program as a kid, it was awe inspiring and something to be proud of.

A shame today’s kids don’t have a Mars mission, or creating a colony on the moon to marvel at.
