Finally. Mitt Romney released an ad today highlighting Barack Obama’s flawed and dishonest character.

From the Romney Campaign: President Obama cannot run on his record, so he is committed to tearing down Mitt Romney. His campaign tried to use the tragedy of a woman’s death for political gain. Then, his top campaign aides were caught lying about it. Doesn’t America deserve better than a president who will do anything to stay in power?

The Washington Examiner reported, via Free Republic:

Mitt Romney’s campaign released a television ad asking what it says about President Obama’s character that his super PAC released a video suggesting that Romney caused a woman to die of cancer.

“What does it say about a president’s character when his campaign tries to use the tragedy of a woman’s death for political gain?” the narrator in the Romney ad asks. The video features still shots of the Priorities USA Action ad and of campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki claiming that she “can’t speak” to the ad during a recent appearance on CNN.

  3. Most pol ads won’t have much effect until some time in Sept. So it seems the Kommiecrats are burning attack ads that become self nuetering by the vialness.

    Mitts seems to be handling this very well, factual rather then inraged. I expect his ads to increase in volume and attack in a month or so…

  5. Plus: The ad was clear and the pace wasn’t so rushed that all you can come away with is a jumbled mess of words and images.

    Negative: Just not hard hitting enough. It presume the person watching knows about the ad. If you’re going to target someone saying or doing anything to stay in power, there’s a lot more pwerful stuff to use than this.

    I’ve yet to see an ad that impacts me in the gut, emotionally, and that’s what’s go to happen. The opponent is doing that with images that pack a punch and that is what voters are left with. An image. A feeling. Our side has been coming up with ads that are too soft peddled and which are not memorable. You’ve got a handful of seconds to link the person with a big feeling. The other side is doing that. We are not. sigh

  7. By the tone of the ad, it looks like (just my educated guess) Romney is trying to stay above the gutter that Obama is trying to drag the campaign in.

    By staying above the gutter, Romney will use the, “Obama went from Hope and Change to Smear and Slander” tone. Romney is hitting back in a dignified way, but not below the belt.

    It will be a compare and contrast from Obama in 2008 to 2012. Let’s face it, part of what charmed the American people about Obama in 2008 was his positive massage. He faked it like Eddie Haskel, but people still fell for it. Now Romney can say, “he’s changed for the worse” or however he’s going to turn the public against Obama.

  8. Exhibit A: We see an image of Obama smiling broadly. No big deal. Nice pic. Then take a look at the pic from El Salvador. See what I mean? It doesn’t matter to much of the electorate that the Obama campaign is lying. They’re not following these issues closely. They’re just out there being hit with ads. Ours don’t work. The other side’s do.

    Our ads are too heady. They need to leave the person with a feeling, a connection to an idea. The left is linking Romney with horrid feelings and ideas. And they’re doing it every single day.

  9. Seems like Romney is reviving after 6 weeks or so of passivity. This relatively soft attack on Obama is preparation for additional, gradually strenthening attacks on Barry’s complete lack of character. Can’t come out too strong at first, gotta get people used to the idea that Obama isn’t the GOD as portrayed by the msm. Then burn him down by citing his own actions. I really liked the “What else is he lying about?” ad in response to the Joe Septic lie. Irrefutable evidence in Cutter’s and Septic’s own voices.

  10. Mad Hatter, I hear your point. The problem is that Romney doesn’t have the same kind of charm/appeal that Obama has/had with so many, nor does he have the media hyping him in this way. What you, or we, may see as Romney staying above the fray, the media simply paints as weakness. The simple fact is that this is how Obama has run every campaign he’s ever run: lies and outrageous assertions. The thing is, it has worked. Every. Single. Time. That is what we’re up against. A highly effective very well oiled smear machine. Like it or not, it words with voters.

  12. Think about this. Romney is either running ahead or tied with Obama according to Rasmussen and Gallup and Obama has spent hundreds of millions already while Romney ha spent almost nothing.

  14. #8, spot on. Obama is a demagogue, plain and simple. The substance of his words is gibberish, his policies are horrid. However, he appeals to people’s emotions. All of his stump speaches are garbage in substance, but keen in appealing to people’s emotions. And by people, I mean the millions upon millions of susceptible voters who do not pay close attention to the issues but succumb to the emotional rhetoric. Most conservatives are well reasoned and support their positions with facts and logic. Obama’s masses vote on feelings not intellect.

    Say what you want about Obama, but he is running an effective campaign. He is ginning up his base with freebees at the tax payers’ exense (Dream Act, gutting welfare reform, etc.), and then associating Mitt Romney with very negative feelings.

    The real issue here is not Obama. He is at best a third-world Marxist dictator. The real issue is Romney’s school-boy weakness and naive sense of civility. The anti-Obama vote is strong, the pro-Romney vote is weak.

    Sad to say that Mitt Romney is just too weak and timid to first respond and then savagely attack back. Ideas are not enough to win an election. When dealing with the Chicago machine, you have to put them on their heels. The entire campaign thus far has evolved into Obama smear, Romney tepid response. Obama attack, Romney response will continue until November. This dance will be a death spiral for Romney because the unspoken message it sends to voters is weakness. And, lost in the past few weeks is any positive messaging from Romney. He is stuck in responses to Obama’s attacks. This puts Obama in a position of strength because he is driving the discourse and routinely associating Romney with very negative feelings (felony, tax evasion, rapacious capitalism, etc.). Does not matter if everything about Romney is untrue. The heart moves mass elections more than the intellect, especially when considering how so few Americans actually know the issues.

    Romney better get a pair fast. Yes, deliver positive messaging around your platform. Yes, draw the policy contrast to Obama. BUT, STOP BEING SUCH A SCHOOL-BOY SELF-RIGHTEOUS WUSS. TAKE OF YOUR GLOVES, PUT THE BRACE KNUCKLES ON, AND PUMMEL THE CHICAGO CON-MAN. OTHERWISE, HISTORY WILL REMEMBER THIS ELECTION AS THE ONE THAT ROMNEY LOST, NOT THE ONE THAT OBAMA WON!

    Or how about telling of the Catholic bozos who voted for him because he ASSURED them he had no intention of PROMOTING abortion only to:
    1) make his first bill an act to enable abortion in a way that made it monumentally easier
    2) HHS mandate.
