Missouri Senator Roy Blunt and former Senators John Ashcroft, Kit Bond, John Danforth, and Jim Talent put out this joint statement:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Roy Blunt called U.S. Representative Todd Akin’s recent statements “totally unacceptable” and issued the following joint statement together with former Missouri U.S. Senators John Ashcroft, Kit Bond, John Danforth, and Jim Talent calling for Akin to step aside:

“We do not believe it serves the national interest for Congressman Todd Akin to stay in this race. The issues at stake are too big, and this election is simply too important. The right decision is to step aside.”

  1. So are these Republican leaders throwing Akin under the bus Jim?

  2. That about makes it unanimous – Looks like all we need is the rope and the tree, er, the podium and the microphone…

  3. Do you want to dethrone Harry Reid from his Majority Leadership position?

Do you want the Republicans in charge of the Senate when Romney has to select at least one, if not two Supreme Court nominee’s?

Do you want to overturn Obamacare?

What’s the best way to go about it? With or without Akin?

  4. Proud to say I voted for Brunner. As a 20-year-constituent of Akin’s district, I thought, “What has he ever done except shove pics of his Navy sons in front of me every two years?” I love the Navy but that is not enough!
If Sarah Palin had kept her nose out of our Senate Primary and not endorsed Sarah Steeleman (a former SEIU devotee), our nominee today would be Brunner. The four or five points Sarah took from Brunner allowed McKaskill and the Dems to throw the race to the Akin. And Steeleman still finished 3rd in the primary.

  5. Hey Jim, if you think Akin should stay, you do realize who agrees with you…Claire McCaskill

    This man is an ass.

    Get. Out.

  6. Akin just told Huckabee he’s staying in the race. Selfish ass. He certainly isn’t thinking about what is best for our country. We have to get Claire and Obama out. Akin is handing Dems so much ammunition which will go on until election day. Appalling. Simply appalling.

  7. So are these Republican leaders throwing Akin under the bus Jim?

Nope. Spitballing about how someone’s body works during an interview is weapons grade stupid. Democrats would bronze him and keep him there forever, or break laws to get him swapped out and then order that military absentee ballots be destroyed (Torrecelli). This is actually a good thing. It’s sort of like realizing that the garbagemen are doing a good job. It ain’t pretty, but it’s a needed service.

  8. Akin just told Huckabee he’s staying in the race

Without money? What an ass. The party has a mechanism to shut down money flow when it thinks it’s being raped by an idiot. He’s making Murkowski look noble.

  9. Todd Akin is a conceited jack a$$ IMO. A Self centered egotistical moron!!!!!!

I was told this morning that in the 40′s the Democratic Machine in Kansas City had a primary winner removed from the ballot as they did not like.
They black balled him out of the party.
Could this be done with Akin

  10. #9 I hope so. This is a critical election. Boot the guy out. How does he think he can possibly survive without money and support from fellow Republicans?

  11. Does anyone really think that a Democratic voter is going to vote Republican because this guy gets booted? Does anyone really think a republican voter is going to vote Democrat because he doesn’t? This election is going to be about voting AGAINST Claire, and anyone with an ounce of sense will do that regardless of how many gaffes Akin makes, how many lies they tell about him, or how many times the media misrepresents his words …

    Just my opinion …

  12. What kind of mind does it take to give the finger to the people that supported you financially, and with their sweat and time, and now beg you to do what’s right for them?

  13. Tod Akin’s voting record surpasses Paul Ryan’s for conservatism and NO bailouts. He misspoke, apologized and no women died in submerged cars, and no taxes went up.

    Here are Akin’s detractors:

Ashcroft could not win a senate race against a corpse, and would not campaign against the corpse’s widow–Jean Carnahan-who wasn’t even on the ballot. Ashcroft suspended his campaign because he was a ‘gentleman’ who grieved more than the widow. HE LOST THAT SEAT for all of Missouri.

Kit Bond is a RINO who voted YES to confirm Eric Holder and Ruth Bader Ginsberg. He also voted for Cash for Clunkers.

John Danforth championed the payment of $40 million yearly by MO taxpayers to Claire McCaskill’s pals at the Stowers Institute for embryonic stem cell fakery.

MO senator Roy Blunt wants to keep “the good parts” of Obamacare. A total moron.

Jim Talent’s first act in Congress was to vote for Clinton’s Crime Bill, because then Clinton “couldn’t waste in something else.”

These RINOs can all go to he//.

  14. Brunner should get the nod as he was second in the primary.

  15. The important focus is in gaining the majority in the Senate and House plus the Executive Branch. We need to get rid of McCaskill. We need to focus on removing BO and unraveling the damage his administration has done to this country.

The comments on the part of Akin are not ‘gaffes’ they are hurtful, cruel, abusive comments and he is too much of a Neanderthal to clue in. Rape is rape – PERIOD.

Either way – he cannot stem the bleeding at this point in time. No matter what he tries to do – the damage is done to him AND if he does not exit… the damage to the GOP will ensure that we lose Congress and the Presidency.

To those who think he is being shoved under the bus – *IF* this was a gaffe you might have a leg to stand on. But it was not a gaffe. It was a cruel, idiotic comment born out of ignorance. Even his nonapology apology was hurtful. The fact that he STILL doesn’t get it is even more proof that he is not the best candidate for a US wide position.

Akin is the guy who thinks women lie about being abused. He thinks if a good woman was raped she would not conceive. EGADS folks…. LOOK AT THE MENTALITY of this Neanderthal.
What would you do if YOUR sister, mother, daughter was raped and wound up pregnant…. would you think she was not really raped?

He needs to get over his ego and do the right thing. Step aside with class and move forward. THEN he might be able to salvage his reputation and gain office down the road. But now – if he stays in and ruins the races for other GOP he will be a pyorrhea and not forgiven for being the one who blocked a win for the GOP.

If Akin stays in – we lose more women from the party as they will have their worst fears realized – GOP are neanderthals.

  16. The one’s who should be considered for Akin’s position are Brunner and Steelman – THEY were 2nd/3rd with just a whisker’s difference between the two.

It would be wisest to choose Steelman to counter the damage incurred on the part of Brunner. A female conservative will definitely be a good match against McCaskill.

The list who are speaking out should not be selected to replace Akin. They should be listened to though.

  17. 4 out of 5 of these Republican establishments are has beens. I would also say all 5 of these guys are a big cause of our current day fiscal problems.

So do they think they should overturn the will of the voters who just voted 2 weeks ago?

By the way, I am still a big John Brunner supporter and voted for him, but Todd won.
