NPR Crank Mark Shields: Republicans Haven’t Raised Taxes in 21 Years ‘And That Is Irresponsible’

NPR crank Mark Shields whined on Inside Washington this week on PBS that Republicans haven’t raised taxes on the American public in 21 years and that was “irresponsible.”

Transcript via NewsBusters:

KRAUTHAMMER: …you conducted a Keynesian experiment – here’s the argument – and it did not succeed, because it sprinkled all this money on programs, crony capitalism and government jobs, which is not the key to growth, and that’s the major distinction between the policies of the Left and the Right, Democrats and Conservatives.

MARK SHIELDS, PBS: Well we do all of this equal time of who’s at fault, I just point out one thing: George Herbert Walker Bush dared to raise taxes in 1991. Since that action, 21 years, Republicans have not voted for a single broad-based tax increase, and that’s become the theology of the party, the ideology of the party, the definition of the party, and that is irresponsible.

Can you name the only president ‘not’ to raise taxes during a war?
How about the only president to actually give tax ‘cuts’ during a war?
They are both the same person.

If you guessed: George W. Bush. — You’d be correct!

  • Mad Hatter

#1, I agree, that would make an excellent campaign ad.

  • More liberty

I’m so tired of partisans on both sides that refuse to even acknowledge – or maybe they are just dumb- but the the fact is it’s congress that holds the purse strings. The president, regardless of party, cant raise or cut a dime without congress.

The devotion that Shields and the Left have for Big Government is immoral.

    Heal thyself, cult of government!

A Republican..Supreme Court Jester Roberts… just voted FOR the largest tax increase in History. It is the Democrat failure to cut baseline spending ONCE in the last 100 years that is criminal.

Are you ignorant to the way our system works? The only way for tax cuts or increases to take place is via congress. The executive branch can ask congress to do this or that but it only happens if congress creates and passes a bill.

GW Bush outspent ‘all’ previous US presidents — combined!

Look, we are bankrupt, and there is nothing any human being can do at this point to change that fact. Neither side has the will to do anything to save the situation, even if it could be saved. Look for the FED to continue to print money and inflate away everyone’s savings in it’s efforts to save it’s bankster owners.

  • Frank Scarn

Okay, okay, Mark Shields. You and your three chins can pay my share. Sheeeeeesh,

  • Path

Shields thinks that not raising taxes is irresponsible? Really? I’d call it good business and good for business. You have to remember that before Obama, we didn’t have the trillions and trillions and trillions of deficit spending and so we didn’t all owe about $80k toward what is actually government waste.

You’re right about that. But not to be out done, along came Obama and he did in four years what Bush did in 8. What we have in the USA is actually a one party system brought to you by the welfare/warfare party.

  • George

    Lefty commented:
“GW Bush outspent ‘all’ previous US presidents — combined!

Isn’t it funny how the left gives us lies and then tells us to check the facts.
Hey Lefty! You’re dead wrong. Stop repeating this lie.
You were too damn lazy to check the facts yourself (do you work for Obama?).
Go here and add it up yourself:
Federal spending, federal debt, and GDP

  • Mad Hatter

    #11, Lefty,

Get your facts straight. Bush did spend $4 trillion in eight years, but your ole buddy Barack has spent close to $5.2 trillion in three and a half years.

The truth can be such a pesky thing.

  • George

    More liberty wrote:
“You’re right about that. But not to be out done, along came Obama and he did in four years what Bush did in 8.”

No, he was wrong about that. Bush did not outspend all previous presidents. It is unequivocally false.

Also, Obama has not outspent Bush yet. Obama is on track to match Bush’s 8 years of spending in only 5.5 years.

In terms of debt, Obama is easily on track to match Bush’s 8 years of debt in less than 4 years.

  • I’m not a racist; I don’t like Biden or Pelosi either

big spending has been a problem for decades, but one of the big differences between Bush and Obeyme is 9-11, which happened a couple of months after GW took office.

I don’t remember GW EVER whining about it, or blaming Clinton for ignoring all the clues.

Did the media ever give Bush a pass because he “inherited” 9-11? Not a friggin’ chance!

I’m so sick of all these whiners.

  • George

All you guys are having trouble with the spending facts.
Bush spent about $19 trillion in 8 years adding about $5 trillion to our debt.
Obama is on track to spend about $14.6 trillion in 4 years adding about $6 trillion to the debt.

  • Liberals haven’t stopped spending in a hundred years and that sucks.

  • Lefty

    IIRC.
Clinton’s people briefed GW’s people very thoroughly during the transition; on OBL and the potential for an attack here in the US.
W’s people…dropped the ball. (Unintentionally or otherwise!)

Thanks for the correct $ figures.

  • paul52

Oh, Lefty…. Clinton had OBL ready to be handed over to him and he would NOT take him. It’s a nice evening, go for a walk.

  • More liberty

(sigh). Can you people realize that these two parties are virtually the same. More debt, more lies and less liberty. Nothing will change under either of these crooks. They are both big government statist. They simply want control.

  • Flintstone F.

Good lord, Shields? He’s impossible to parody. There is no logic he can’t twist or dismiss.

  • Lefty

    # 26 ML

You are correct. Basically the Republicans and Democrats are two
different sides on the same coin.

Welfare is given to the masses only to the point where it will pre-empt
a potential for revolution. Thus allowing the status quo to remain the same.

  • Robert

In September of 2000 the debt was $5.6 Trillion.

In September of 2007 the debt was $9 Trillion. Not so great, no conservative can defend it.

Keep in mind that the Democrats gained control of the House and Senate in Nov. 2006.

Bush’s “irresponsibility” was signing their government-inflating budgets for the last two years of his second term.

In September of 2011 the debt was $14.8 Trillion. Should be frightening to anyone with common sense.

In September of 2012 the debt will be over 16, let’s say $16.3 Trillion.

So Bush 5.6 to 9 equals $3.4 Trillion in 7 years, almost $0.5 Trillion per year.

Democrats and Obama 9 to 16.3 equals $7.3 Trillion in 5 years, almost $1.5 Trillion per year.

So, Democrats are 3 times as irresponsible and unpatriotic as Republicans.

(Actually more so, because they want to overturn the existing order and subvert the restraining effects of the Constitution on the federal government.)

THEIR OBJECTIVE IS ALWAYS TO TAKE MORE OF YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY AND SPEND IT ALL AWAY.

Obama says he will do more for the middle class than Romney. The taxes raised by Obamacare will become the largest tax increase ever and, according to the reports, 75% of the back breaking, job killing, economy stifling cost will be on the shoulders of the middle class. How can he possibly do more for us than what he has done to us? I would love for some so called journalist to ask him about the inherent contradiction he espouses but I won’t hold my breath.

Media Refuses to Make Obama Pay Price For Lies

And what have we heard from a media currently obsessed with fact-checking? Not a peep, not a sound, not a word.

Over the airwaves and on the stump, Obama is currently running around the country portraying his opponent Mitt Romney as an outsourcer. This is a proven lie.

And what have we heard from a media currently obsessed with fact-checking? Not a peep, not a sound, not a word.

Obama told students that a bill to freeze student loan interest rates would save them $1,000 a year when it will only save them $87.

And what have we heard from a media currently obsessed with fact-checking? Not a peep, not a sound, not a word.

Just a few weeks ago it was revealed that Obama told no fewer than three-dozen falsehoods in his autobiography.

And what have we heard from a media currently obsessed with fact-checking? Not a peep, not a sound, not a word.

We just learned that Obama lied about his relationship with a domestic terrorist.

And what have we heard from a media currently obsessed with fact-checking? Not a peep, not a sound, not a word.

We just learned that Obama lied about his membership in socialist New Party. […]

Sorry for all of these but this sounds great!

David Brooks: Romney has ‘a secret plan’ for health care

    [..]
“So after the health care decision, Romney could have come out there,” Brooks explained. “He has a health care plan. And it’s pretty detailed, at least within, I would say, this little box he keeps in the subbasement of his 12-car garage, in deep secret. He’s not letting anybody know it, but it is a secret plan, and it’s a pretty good plan. And I would like him to say what it is, in part so he can say, ‘This is what I believe.’”

Brooks acknowledged Romney has released an outline of his health care policy. However, the unreleased details of the plan will score Romney big points with the public, he said.

“Well, he has announced the outlines of his plan,” Brooks said. “That’s public. I also know that he has the private details of the plan, which is in secret. But it’s just fleshing out the plan he has announced publicly.”

A couple of interesting moments on the FBN “Out of Work” Special:

    – 30 jobs Bills passed by the House, all sitting on a table, not ONE of which Harry Reid will bring to the Senate.

(can’t that little dweeb be held in contempt, or better yet, arrested? and why don’t we hear about this travesty in the news? All I hear from Oblahblah and his merry band of idiots is “the obstructionist GOP won’t pass the President’s job bill”… and I hear that even on Fox!)

    – the 8.2% unemployment rate quoted by almost everybody is based ONLY ON NEW CLAIMS IN THE LAST 4 WEEKS. The real rate is 14.9%. (And don’t forget, in June, there were as many people who went on disability as there were new jobs created, so it’s worse even than that.)

    – 99 weeks of unemployment benefits now, versus 16 weeks in the past, radio ads encouraging more people to apply for food stamps — where does it end?

  • Highlander

#33 Robert – I certainly agree … government has grown far too large as it is, but I think a good place to start reducing the size of government and the taxes we pay would be to set some sort of maximum on both. Of course, we already do that in a roundabout way, with debt ceilings, but look where that has gotten us.

I was furious when Boehner and the the Republicans caved on the debt ceiling increases last year, and it looks as if they’re all set to do it again this year. Will it ever end? It’s not looking very likely, because we’re nearly outnumbered by the people who want something for nothing, and we’re governed by people who will gladly give it to them if it means getting re-elected….

I’m not ready to quit fighting just yet, but when I am, I know exactly what I’m going to do. At that point, they’re going to have to find me to tax me …

Hum, it has a nice ring to it.

“Republican have not raised taxes on American’s for 21 years! It’s Irresponsible! Support The Great 0bamaTax!” Paid for by the Soros– Axelrod – 0bama Campaign.

Let me be clear, it takes a lot of money to spend other people’s money! The bigger the Federal Government the bigger the number $125,000.00 salaried federal employees – and they need more tax money to micromanage each person. It’s that simple!

These government employees work from 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a 90 minute lunch break to make laws to interfere with people’s lives and divert they money to my unemployed cronies.

These unemployed cronies need to get government checks so more taxes must be taken from the taxpayer. It’s vicious circle… er virtuous circle. Bigger government means more taxes! More Taxes means hiring more government workers and bigger government!

I am not unemployed as of this date… I could be. But, I am one of those government employ’s that could care less about the needs of the American public. I care about getting reelected at any cost!

I am one of those government employees who works from 11:00 AM until noon. Then I have a 90 minute lunch break with Joe Biden. I then work until 4:30 PM and call it a day. That’s a typical government worker’s day.

I get a salary of $400,000.00 and $50,000.00 “expense account. Then I get lush government healthcare which amounts to $60,000 to $80,000 per year for me and my family. I get a large pig of a limousine, a Jumbo Jet, several helicopters, a number of enormous black buses, all of which requires expensive fuel and a huge security team and maid service – which is mostly a waste of money. It all adds up to about $3,000,000.00 per year – for just one employee! Ha ha!

If you want higher taxes and higher spending vote more me! Send $3.00 to me before midnight.

When I retire – or am kick out of office, I will get about $200,000.00 per year in pension cash, a lush health care program which is unlike my crappy 0bamaCare tax scam. I’ll get around the clock maid service and government security. And, I keep any donations I have collected from my idiot donors… safely hidden in a Swiss Bank Account!

All of this costs money! That is why I must raise taxes! And, the more taxes I raise the more parasite cronies are attracted.

From my point of view it is irresponsible not to raise taxes on the middle-class. My cronies would starve to death!

My limousine is leaking oil and David Axelrod has another scam to inflict upon my donors. This scam is a variation of the Kenyan mail scam. I cannot answer any more questions. Good day.

Irresponsibility is failing to cut spending and instead spending more and more. Irrsponsibility is implementing policies that retard economic growth. Irresponsibility is not passing a budget in over three years. Shields need look no farther than his own party if he’s searching for examples of irresponsibility.

The Democrats feel that our tax dollars are the federal government’s money on loan to us. Just like charitable giving, Democrats are benevolent with other people’s money, rarely spending their own on their own causes and deciding what’s best for us instead of letting us make that decision.

  • bigL

if Harry Reid was like Ted Stephens from Alaska, there would be all kinds of hearings and subpoenas and the usual donk suits from Public interest resarch groups. No GOP leader could withstand the onslaaught and would be hounded from the head of the Senate.Or would become Rino or Donk=lite

Look what they did to Sarah Palin and the GOP did nothing to help. If it was reversed and the GOP was filing harassment suits, these folks would be told to stop or, metaphorically, their brains would be on the table.

The radicals’ threatening tactics also would accrue an intimidating reputation, providing a wealth of opportunities for extorting monetary and other concessions from the target organizations. In the meantime, successful offensives would create an ever increasing drag on society. As they gleefully observed:

[Think Chicago as you read below…]
The next time you drive through one of the many blighted neighborhoods in our cities, or read of the astronomical crime, drug addiction, and out-of-wedlock birth rates, or consider the failed schools, strapped police and fire resources of every major city, remember Cloward and Piven’s thrill that “…the drain on local resources persists indefinitely.”
