Former Governor Jeb Bush told the House Budget Committee yesterday that he would support tax increases to cut the US national deficit.

Because government is so responsible with spending taxpayer dollars.

The Washington Post reported, via Free Republic:

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, in a break with his party, said he could support tax increases to help reduce the federal government’s budget deficit.

The brother of former President George W. Bush told a congressional panel in Washington today that he could back a theoretical deficit-reduction package that would include $1 in tax increases for every $10 in spending cuts.

“If you could bring to me a majority of people to say that we’re going to have $10 in spending cuts for $1 of revenue enhancement — put me in, coach,” Bush told the House Budget Committee. “This will prove I’m not running for anything,” he said, prompting laughter from lawmakers and the audience.

“I appreciate your candor,” said Representative Lloyd Doggett, a Texas Democrat who had pressed Bush on the issue. Bush later told reporters, “I don’t think you shut down every option in order to find common ground.”

It’s too bad Jeb fell for this stunt. He should know by now that Democrats have no intention of cutting spending. It was a trick question.

  1. Pathetic. No more Bushes. Ever. Please.

  2. I with you, rrpjr. No more Bushes. Go away.

  3. and of course, all new revenue will go immediately and only to debt reduction, as it always does

I agree with Jesse Jackson (after all these years) “Stay out the Bushes”

  4. Classic example of a RINO and sucker. No wonder why Democrats love them.

Oh, and please not one more Bush. Ever.

  5. ++

    10 to 1 & he’s not running for anything,
so tell me, why was he even asked??

  6. Read my lips……

  7. Like father, like son…

  8. what a fool. we’ve seen this movie before.
the tax increases are large and immediate and real.
the spending cuts are fictional and are always supposed to happen in 8 to 10 years but nevery do.
government needs to be cut 20% over the next 10 years

  9. Take a flying leap Jeb

  10. Cut the budget 15% across the board…Tell each and every divison, office, area, agency etc they need to cut the fat, waste , fraud, abuse and streamline. If they cant or wont…fire them

  11. I’m always surprised that republicans don’t turn this red herring to their advantage by promising a percentage of tax increases the year AFTER spending reductions take effect. In Bush’s 10% example you tell the dems, “Last year we spent 3.8 trillion. If we cut the budget by 200 billion, resulting in spending of a mere 3.6 trillion, we will gladly propose one time tax increases of 20 billion. None of this “out year” nonsense. We’ll match ACTUAL spending cuts, but only after they’ve happened.”

  12. R-I-N-O

  13. What an ass at….please stop talking

  14. Roger that, guys. No more Bushes, EVER.

I am done with these RINO clowns who have spent the nation into bankruptcy.

I’m voting for Virgil Goode and the Constitution Party yet again this year.

EVERYONE ELSE is simply lying to us…

  15. The only problem with this deal in the past was that the tax hikes always came first, to be followed by spending cuts which did not arrive. It’s not an unreasonable deal if done by reforming the code to eliminate social engineering and crony favoritism (so that RATES fall and deductions and credits vanish), and the tax hikes only kick in AFTER the spending cuts have been in effect one full fiscal year.

Democrats have proven they will always break the deal, so we must insist their cuts come first, but Jeb is correct that it is insane to take something off the table completely when the stakes are so high.

  16. Oh boy..I believe it’s about time for John ,Lindsey and the Maine twins to “reach across the aisle”

Where’s my free contraception..I think we’ll be needing it !!!

  17. Jeb Bush, like the two Pres, is another Progressive RINO. The names Kennedy, Clinton, Bush should NEVER be mentioned in the same breath as the word PRES. May they all go to hell!
