In 2007 Obama Warned He’d Make the US Defenseless… Now He’s Unilaterally Cutting US Nukes

Back in October 2007 Barack Obama promised as president he would make the United States defenseless.

“I’m the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president I will end it. Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending. I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems. I will not weaponize space. I will slow our development of future combat systems. And I will institute an independent “Defense Priorities Board” to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending. Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop new nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert, and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.

Now Barack Obama is going to unilaterally cut US nukes.
The Obama Administration announced yesterday that the U.S. military – under Barack Obama’s orders – is going to seek to gut the U.S. nuclear arsenal to as few as just 1,000 warheads. This is sharply below what is required by the 2010 US-Russia Nuclear Arms Treaty, which called for cutting the US nuclear stockpile in half (to around 1,500) and received justified flak from the GOP, but still passed the Senate with 71 votes. Republicans were concerned then about what would happen with our existing stockpile. Now we know! Obama will voluntarily slash away at that, too.

It’s looking like “more flexibility” translates into selling out U.S. defense capabilities. Never mind that Obama’s move would push the US strategic posture back to levels not seen since the early 1950s. Never mind that Russia threatened last year to build up its nuclear strike capabilities; that China and other Asian countries are engaging in a nuclear arms race; that both former and current Strategic Command leaders have warned against cutting back on our investments in nuclear weapons. This decision plays straight to the Obama campaign’s base – and also plays right into Russia’s arms. President Obama promised Vladimir Putin that his administration would be “more flexible” with Russia. Who had any idea that “flexibility” would start so soon?
