Republican Military Hero & First Female to Command Fighter Squadron Will Announce Run For Congress Today

This is exciting news…
Colonel Martha McSally was a pilot in the United States Air Force. She was the first American woman to fly in combat since the 1991 lifting of the prohibition of women in combat. McSally is also the first woman to command a USAF fighter squadron, the 354th Fighter Squadron (354 FS) based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

in 2001 Martha McSally successfully challenged the military policy that required US and UK servicewomen stationed in Saudi Arabia to wear the body-covering abaya when traveling off base in the country.

** Martha McSally will announce her entrance into the Congressional District 8 race Thursday in Arizona.

Here’s more on Martha McSally…
Southern Arizona is buzzing with the possible entrance of a new candidate in the special election to replace Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Martha McSally, the woman who, in 2002, challenged the Department of Defense rule requiring American servicewoman in Saudi Arabia to dress in a Muslim Abaya and headscarf when travelling off base, reportedly plans to formally announce her candidacy Thursday.

McSally, who retired from the Air Force as a colonel, was also the first woman in United States history to fly in combat, and the first woman to lead a squadron into combat, in the skies above Iraq and Afghanistan. McSally is a Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force Academy, earned her Master’s Degree, in Public Policy, from the JFK School of Government at Harvard, and in 1995 was one of only seven active duty Air Force officers selected for the prestigious Legislative Fellowship Program in Washington. She spent the last few years teaching military and foreign affairs to world leaders at the George C. Marshall Center in Germany.

She’s also champion triathlete and has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro

Democrats in the Southern Arizona district, are lining up behind former Giffords’ aide Ron Barber to replace the outgoing congresswoman. Barber is being described by local Democrats as a “placeholder” or “caretaker” until the end of Giffords’ term. But it’s hard not to wonder if the entrance of a dynamic, young Republican woman will change the nature of this race.

McSally is conservative, pro-life, pro-2nd amendment, and everything else that voters in a Republican-leaning district are yearning for. So have the Democrats in Arizona’s 8th congressional district made a mistake? Some people are starting to think so. Martha McSally isn’t Gabrielle Giffords. But her dynamic personality, her clear convictions and accomplished resume could be just what conservatives need if they want to win the race that one Washington insider called, “the next biggest thing to the Presidential” race this year.

Exactly. Trust … but VERIFY. These days, it’s VERIFY twice, then trust, and keep reviewing to make sure the trust isn’t abused.

Recently, the Democrats ginned a recall, put up a no-experience supposedly conservative Morman Republican to oust the Republican in office (the one who sponsored the SB1070 law). This was a supposed Republican who had a big Dem and Indy support clique behind him, who parroted the racist smear of AZ being 1964 Alabama and said not much as the campaign machine engineered a coalition of DEM/Indy/RINO to recall the Repub out of office – that he’d just won with a COMFORTABLE majority.

The Democrats will do anything to win. The Left community organizers are VERY VERY busy in AZ. They WANT it. If something is just too perfect, playing to expectations, CHECK IT.

Not trying to throw cold water on the excitement here, given the possibility that this woman might be the real deal for conservatism, but one thought keeps popping into my head every time a gutsy woman steps to the plate: Where are the gutsy conservative men?

Is there something in the water that is neutering the male half of the population? Just look at congressional Republicans, if you want to get really depressed. We can count the real men on our fingers. Most in the R caucus are effete wimps, cowering in the corner, afraid to do or say anything aggressive to help return this once-great country to its founding principles. Sickening state of affairs.

Yes, I’m a foul-tempered old curmudgeon, but I have good reason to be.

Anybody remember Kock head Scott Walker of Wisconsin? Well his little political machine has developed a problem…

And elsewhere, the now 20-month long “John Doe” probe into Walker’s alleged political activities while serving as a Milwaukee County commissioner scored its first conviction. Darlene Wink’s sentencing has been delayed until May, most likely to make sure Wink has enough time to give up everybody else involved in the various scams. Wink’s misdemeanor convictions center around one of the more tawdry of the schemes allegedly cooked up by Walker’s aides:

Wolff said Wink was eager to fully cooperate with prosecutors, particularly in connection with embezzlement charges. Wink played a role in Operation Freedom, an annual picnic for veterans and their families at the zoo that Walker hosted. Timothy Russell, another former Walker courthouse aide, and Kevin Kavanaugh, have been charged with embezzling money intended for the veterans event. At the time, Kavanaugh served on the Veterans Service Commission under appointment from Walker.

Thats correct. Walker is stealing money from veterans. Wheres the outrage? Partisan illogical hacks, the lot of you.

  • wanumba

I think some questions are in order.

    I climbed Kilimanjaro, too.

It’s a none-technical hike to the top. As they say right at the base, it’s more likely a sixty-year-old grandmama will get up there if she paces herself than a zippy go-go twenty-year-old. Slow enough altitude acclimation is the trick to the ascent, which is why it’s a five day hike. No altitude stops and it could be done in two days of brisk hiking. One only hikes three hours a day, with porters carrying gear. Put one foot in front of the other and you’ll get there. It’s high, over 19,000 at the glacier (which isn’t melting and CAN’T melt because it’s at -3F or lower steady-state frozen 365 days a year – AL Gore lied lied lied).

So, it’s actually more difficult to get a plane ticket and the necessary time off to holiday at Kilimanjaro than to actually “climb” that is to say more correctly “hike” it. I mean, it’s a nice opportunity, to go up Kilimanjaro, but not truly “macho” points.

How did McSally get promoted fast-track “past her peers?” After graduation and commissioning, why was she sent for more classroom in a masters degree in government instead of a masters in say, global security instead of well, a base assingment or deployment … what did the academy chose for her graduating classmates in comparison?

SHe piloted a warthog? It’s awesome in its slug it out sledgehammer with wings features but it’s not one of those things that’s designed to engage in air combat duels.

    The media is really useless.

  • Sha Sene

umm , we engaged the Iraqi and Afgansitan Airforce?

    No

Its a padded resume . And we had an obligation to respect and follow local customs, so her claim to fame is not a good one

    Bg,
Got a good resume, but what do we know about her politics? Nothing … so far.

Generally, the resume sounds great, but there are things on closer inspection that moderate it We’re IN Africa, so it’s always been a bit grating that the Africa command is parked in Germany, nowhere near here, and thus not as savvy to on the ground issues as people like us with boots on the ground would like to see. Most of the resume is office/committee in very mundane and controlled circumstances.

Nothing wrong with that … but although I am sympathetic to the burka nonsense, it’s a fact that local rules, well rule … unless one conquers the place and sets up overlord new managment. If I had been her, in Saudi Arabia with the driving restrictions, I would have had an entourage of vehicles, with massive soldiers driving me around, opening doors and pod-guard like a rock star. The Saudis on the street would have thought she was a movie star or absolutely royalty and been all subservient and groveling.

There are WAYS to work the system, with a bit of audacious creativity.

She chose to sue the military … so I want to know what her true politics are, not what I believe them to be based on suggestive implying. In Saudi Arabia, the male soliders and officers have very tight restrictions put on them that certainly were also chafing and very annoying.

Her resume suggests a lot, but where’s the political vision? Was she really a Democrat before, since how long?

  • wanumba

    bg,

I’d LIKE this to be the case, but it NEEDS to be confirmed.

In Arizona, a real Republican was torn out of office a few months ago, by a Democrat recall gimmick to use a UNVETTED zero-experience “Republican” with a coalition of DEM/INDY/RINO votes.
The Dems put up the “Mormon Republican” challenger, NOT the GOP.

So, we’re a little jaded about these things in AZ, and the Democrats have a full forward operating base to flip AZ to DEM. They are after Brewer and Sheriff Arpiao, they’ve redistricted to recover Dem control. That district is BLUE.

In the same area, Ruth McClune, a literal Republican candidate who is an actual rocket scientist is not running this time, she says thanks to total confusion on the new districting -she could be in one of any of three districts!! — an early DEM success – a GOP drop out.

I predict she goes no where. She has no name recognition and her ties to southern AZ are not that strong. From the above press release, Sam Stone is helping with her campaign in some regard. He is known in AZ for running losing campaigns.

Plus, there are 3 really strong candidates: Frank Antenori, current state senator – the only one with experience. An amazing guy, former Green Beret, and fairly well liked by the local Republican base (although not always by the establishment/$ people).

Jesse Kelly – almost beat Giffords last time, should have if he ran a little better campaign and the Democrats didnt prop up a libertarian against him (amongst other items during that race).

Dave Sitton – big time name recognition, long time UA broadcaster and rugby coach (and general TV personality). He will probably have a lot of establishment/$ support.

Oh. Someone else said it, so I want to know if it’s true.

I simply want to know her political views to get an idea as to how she’d vote. Kennedy School is Liberal Left Government School. As a Republican myself and a long Conservative, I would have NOT picked that for my Masters … and we have choices and we pick what we are comfortable with.

imho your comparison choice is way off..

as a matter of fact, in stark contrast..

    irrespective of “party”..

when it comes to Islamists, McSally is evidently
a disabler, whereas Bloomberg is an enabler..
    ::::::::::::::::::::::

Bloomberg is an enabler, he’s also a life-long Democrat who switched parties to ride in on GOP goodwill that Rudy Giuliani created from all his hard work and leadership. THAT’s the point.

McSally did not sue the Saudis. She sued our own military. Saudi Arabia is still what it is, same old same old. Our male soldiers are under restrictions too there, that they don’t like either. Did she stick up for them also or only herself? I do not see where she “disabled” anything.

  • I’m not in this district, or state, and have nothing against Col. McSally personally. But I do know Frank Antenori, and he and his ODA killed more tanks than her A-10 squadron. We’ve got plenty of Air Force officers in Congress (like Tom Harkin, D-Vietnamwannabee) but could use some practical on-the-ground folks.

It looks like the voters in AZ-8 are going to have some good options.

I don’t really know why this is going on this way, but Reagan left the Democrat Party became a Republican and essentially defined the Conservative movement.

He did not pretend to be a Republican as Bloomberg did.

If someone has a Democrat background including schooling at Democrat Left bastions like Kennedy School of Gov’t, and now claims Republican, I want proof that we’ll get Republican not Democrat Left.

It’s fair, and haven’t gotten answers as yet, so jury’s still out. But that’s what vetting candidates is supposed to be for. Voters haven’t done so well with that in recent years.

I graduated from the Academy with this woman. I believe she may have been the most hated person in my class. She was an expert at using sexual politics to propel herself ahead of everyone and was protected by Colorado Congresswoman Pat Schroeder. Maybe she has become a better person as a result of her Air Force career, I don’t know. On the other hand, she may be perfect for congress.

“umm , we engaged the Iraqi and Afgansitan Airforce?”

A-10s generally get shot at from the ground, not other aircraft. We lost at least three to ground fire in Desert Storm – don’t know about Iraqi Freedom or Afghanistan. That’s not to say her politics are acceptable, only that ground attack aircraft did, in fact, see combat in Iraq, and got shot at.

“I would have NOT picked that for my Masters ”

Seriously, if the Air Force was willing to pay you to get a Masters at Harvard you wouldn’t take it? I doubt that, especially if you had aspirations beyond the Air Force. Pretty much all schools are liberal/left; that doesn’t alter the fact that (according to GSS data) if college is going to affect your politics, it’s going to shift them to the right, not the left.

Her resume looks pretty good. I dont know why all you guys are trashing her. The article says she is pro life, pro 2nd amendment, conservative. I agree with her for opposing the Rumsfeld dress code, it was a stupid apeasement to the radical muslims. The business about this being some dem plot is really crazy. If she wins, the seat flips from dem to repub, so why in the world would she be a dem plot. Now if there was an even better repub in the race that she was displacing that would be one thing, but nobody has presented any evidence for that. But if her only compeditor is a dem, why not support her.

She took on the liberal DOD bureaucracy and won? She took on the liberal DOD bureaucracy on a politically correct issue, and she won? I’m sending her money. Now. This lady has guts. Hopefully she can challenge Boehner for the speakership.

  • CharlieW

Richard40# – Um, there are 4 other R team on the ballot so far (or announced). And three are good, with at least one of them being really good (imho – Frank Antenori).

My mind was made up already (www.antenori.com), but like I said before she is coming to Tucson out of no where (for the most part). I really dont see the base giving her much thought right now.

And RedBull# – Concerning a run for the Senate, McCain’s term is up in 2016 (unless he never retires). I could see an ambitious person thinking ahead already.

  • Old Zoomie

After she sued Rumsfeld over that abaya thing, she was radioactive. The Air Force had no choice but to promote her, and give her decent jobs, or it would have been seen as retribution. As far as her pilot skills, I talked to some A-10 drivers who said she was just average. No, after 2002 she advanced only because no one had the guts to say no. She got special treatment. (Full disclosure: I was in the Air Force at that time. I heard things.)

The fact that she went outside the system and sued the SECDEF tells me she can’t be trusted to work within the system. I’m sure some of you here thinks that’s cool, but if she did that once, how can you trust her to work with other Republicans against the Democrats and stay on message? She might easily go against the conservative agenda simply for the publicity and self-advancement. And I think Arizonans have seen that before — John McCain.

Regarding suing Rumsfeld successfully over wear of the abaya off base in Saudi…I was stationed in Saudi for 7 months in 2009, and when female troops went off base, they had to wear the abaya. Otherwise they would probably have been beaten and/or arrested by the Mutaween.

I don’t live in Arizona, but I knew this person when I was at the Academy. She acted strictly in her own interest to the detriment of others during her Cadet years and many times as an Air Force Officer (as told in the many anecdotes you can find here…). I don’t make it a habit to get involved in politics; however, this person is someone I feel is so vile that I felt compelled to make some remarks about her candidacy. If you want to support her, go ahead – I’m just grateful I live far, far away from any jurisdiction in danger of being “represented” by her.

    :::::::::::::::::::::

Okay, I won’t beat around the bush.
My questions were fair, but rhetorical.
I don’t like what I see, based on as an AZ taxpayer, what I know what’s going in AZ, what I know about the military to analyze her resume, what I know about the AFrica command and what work she says she was doing for it, the reasoning and attitude she presented in the interview, PLUS my nearly 20 years of working in Muslim countries as compared to her short little exposure, and my close knowledge of how women are graded lighter than men, watching women who get 90% on all their tests beat out men who get 90% on their tests, yet who have to accomplish 50% MORE than the women. Our military thanks to gender-handicapping is giving 110 lb women who run a mile in 8 minutes, press 80lbs and do 80 situps, commissions while 6 ft 180 lb men who run a 6 minute mile, press 200 lbs and do 130 situps in the same time frame, get Reserves.

Does that make any sense? Well, yeah, if office work is the military. It’s screwy, it’s demoralizing and it allows mediocre women to rise up fast. It is easy for them to get egotistical and entitlement-cranky. Not all, but definitely a type emerges that flourishes in those conditions.

I haven’t seen proof of the claims she’s pro-life, pro-2nd Amend, etc. Maybe she is. Her background suggests otherwise, but I have an open mind to hear the argument and FACTS. How is she on illegal immigration? ObamaCare? School choice? Taxes? Mining rights?

bg, you say you were a DEM up to 9/11. I was Conservative years before that, and because of being overseas, more on the front lines of terror attacks for two decades prior, so 9/11 was NO SHOCK to us. All the attacks were plainly evolving to exactly that kind of attack, just a matter of time. But trying to get Dems to admit/recognize the threat was impossible. 3,000 Americans had to die before Democrats sat up… ohhh! ooohhh!!

WHat shall we call the 9/11 DEMS whose reality got mugged that day? Still DEMS? 9/11 Hawks/Social Liberals? Not so many came around completely to the GOP side, fewer can be classed as re-evaluating and accepting Conservatism as their political framework.

WHy did one poster chirp up about sending the info to the PUMA lists? Aren’t those Hillary supporters? Not Conservative or Republican at ALL. Begs the question: What would a PUMA see in this candidate?
    hmmm hmmm.

Complaining about stereotypes and then blanket stereotyping men. It is grossly biased to dismiss valid concerns based solely on a Leftist divisive denigration of men as all “good ol boys.”

I am very impressed with the volunteers of our military, how much they give up in comforts and how hard they work, and how much they deal with of a day that they have to suck up and carry on regardless. There are some good women in there, and they are very respected, but there are some genuine horrors who are given authority when they have no right or competence for, except knowing the way to complain. It creates genuine resentment and morale problems. It takes two. Men have their part, but so do women. Starting with stop dismissing men’s opinions on the basis of sexism against males.

So much love here for the military, none for this female American warrior. The same people who bitch about the Sauds not permitting the ownership of Bibles or a crucifix, or Valentines Day to be celebrated or restricting the movement of kafir within their borders are ok with bagging our woman and treating them as chattel? Very revealing. The Taliban like policy has been reversed. If women in the military are so offensive to our so called allies, time to find new allies.

    Drill here drill now!

  • Ion Marian

Martha is already a winner. I personally met her in 2011 when we were a part of an international group that escalated along a mountain peak. At that time I had two images in front of my eyes: one – Martha and the other – Mother Teresa .

Lately, I had the opportunity to listen to her life story. I was very impressed! I felt her big heart in the following days. A heart which the most important thing at this point in her life is to give those who need her experience and her help.

You can’t go on the road with Martha if you are not properly equipped or if it is unsafe to do so. First she guides you then you can continue the trip by her side.

I am Romanian but I see in Martha the U.S. flag of the American dream, a reality that many foreigners think it can happen only in movies. Martha is a living reality and trust me when I say: it doesn’t matter the environment you come from, the country or what training you have, Martha is the same for all.

God help you Martha, keep you healthy to accomplish your mission on earth and also fulfill your father’s desire: “Make me proud!”

  • Phat

I agree with what my classmate said regarding Martha’s time at USAFA: she was hated by her classmates.

Same in pilot training, but there was always this bubble of protection around her granted by the higher ups.

88 grad (at #94) summed it up perfectly: ‘Machiavellian to the core’.

Unless she has been spending the last few years grooming the Republican party insiders in S. AZ I don’t see much of a chance for her. Other candidates are strong and have much more insider support. Primary voters may also resent an outsider parachuting in, so to speak.

How offensive is it to see how grossly you’ve misrepresented the very valid questions as to what her actual POLITICAL beliefs are.

The Apostle Paul told everyone to compare what he says to what is written to CONFIRM that it’s correct and in line with God’s Word. It’s okay with God to ask for clarifications.

But people are mocked for asking simple questions about this women’s politics even though she is running for political office. We’re being told to focus ONLY on her resume of military work, which is actually irrelevent to the job she is now applying for, and actually gives little hint of her political values. Obama was elected on expectations, projections. Do people ever learn? This woman should be tough enough to handle some direct questions.

Why also are men’s opinions dismissed solely on the basis of an assumed sexism? That’s sexist bigotry of the worst kind.

Voters have RIGHT to request more information instead of taking it all at face value.

Of course, we cannot tell through this blog how many urging contributing cash sight unseen are actually Democrats.

  • I wonder if she will introduce legislation to overturn the unconstitutional USFSPA, an ex-post facto law that requires career and retired/retained service members to support a remarried former spouse for life. A law that violates the 10th amendment and usurps state’s domestic relations courts. Secretly attached as a rider to the DAB in 1982, then back-dated to circumvent the USSC decision that ruled states could not treat military retired/retainer PAY as community property. DOD secretly supports the USFSPA criminal act behind the backs of our troops and keeps them in the dark by never providing any information on USFSPA.
