Glenn Beck: Why We Are All Catholics Now

Glenn Beck explains why we are all Catholics now.

Glenn Beck met with Cardinal Timothy Dolan in Rome this weekend after Dolan was elevated to cardinal. (The Blaze)

Glenn Beck was in Rome this weekend visiting with Catholic leaders.
He contributed this to the Washington Post today.

I am a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but today, I call myself a Catholic. Why? Because the state is telling the Catholic Church to violate its principles and teachings. So if you are a person of faith, you must call yourself a Catholic.

Today, the Catholic Church is defending a historic American freedom. We tend to forget that many of America’s earliest European settlers were religious refugees. Europe was not a kind place to the faithful if the state didn’t approve: Jews in Spain, Puritans in England, Protestants in France and so on. You were cast out, or worse.

Our Founding Fathers remembered this. They knew if you can’t serve God as you choose, you are not free. And so they enshrined that right in the First Amendment of the Constitution: The state “shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

This is why Americans are offended by the ruling from the White House that would force church-run institutions to pay for birth control and morning-after pills, which are tantamount to abortion. The so-called compromise is no compromise – under government-approved health insurance plans that the church pays for, abortifacients would be covered. Sin by proxy – that’s the compromise.

The Blaze has more on Beck’s visit to Vatican City.

  • “The state “shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…””

…doesn’t that pretty much say it all? How can Obama declare a statement, as he did, and truly believe he can get away with it? MAYBE….just maybe, he had an ulterior motive already in line?

“The so-called compromise is no compromise”

Notice the Obama administration never called it a compromise. They called it an “accommodation”. Cute, eh?

And while I’ve not seen this reported in the general media, the administration has now proceeded to implement the original regulation, as written, without any change whatsoever.

So even the administration’s phony “accommodation” now seems to be on the cutting-room floor.

Do you think the administration has demonstrated bona fide engagement with concerned citizens based on the constitution and other law (First Amendment; Religious Freedom Restoration Act – 1993)?

    Yeah. Right.

This Sunday once again in church (I’m Catholic) we were asked to raise our voices against this (by contacting our government officials). Sorry, won’t do. The bishops and hierarchy of the Catholic church are just interested in preserving religious liberty . What about liberty, period? I remind you these bishops so upset now were the biggest cheerleaders and allies of Obama during the debate that preceded Obamacare. The only thing they cared about was to advance the cause of “social justice”. The day I hear them condemn the law as a loss of freedom for all of us, not only Catholic institutions, I’ll heed their call for support.

I couldn’t agree more – we are all Catholics now – except Muslims that is – gawd! looks like the Crusades may be upon us once again – perhaps we’ll finish the job this time – ’cause if we don’t – they will. . . .

    Nice photo op.
A picture, they say, is worth a 1000 words but actions speak louder.
When I see Beck and Cardinal Dolan on their knees and praying in front of the White House, I’ll know they’ve joined the fight.

I am afraid that this is exactly that..

2- The court will eventually make the correct ruling..BUT..
Does that rulling set LEGAL PRECEDENTS for the Muslims to use to argue that
“their principles and teachings” are a matter of Faith and individual conscience”
    Here comes Sharia next??

    #3 “What about liberty, period?”

OK, good Q, run with that.

You want to live in a country where the federal government can tell you what insurance you must buy? What that insurance must cover? And btw asserts the power to command private companies to offer their products for free? Do you think that will stop with insurance? When the feds are responsible to pay for the majority of medical care in the U.S., they might actually choose to command other activities. To name a far-fetched example, they might even tell 4-year-old nursery school kids what their mothers may not feed them – and substitute federally-mandated chicken nuggets. All in the name of “health” mind you – and so the feds can tell themselves they are saving save a few bucks in ObamaCare. Is that the kind of liberty you have in mind? Somehow, I doubt that.

So – – I think we should welcome the Catholics (and other religious orgs as well) as converts to the cause. We need their help.

We should not try to “punish” them because they came late to their conversion. They’re here. Let’s get more converts and meanwhile let’s all work together now to defeat not only this contraceptive thing, but to get ObamaCare repealed in its entirety.

ObamaCare is, after all, the source of the greatly-expanded, bogus “authority” that HHS now claims over contraceptives. And that is just the beginning.

Herein lies the philosophical importance of the upcoming presidential election. During the past three years the diminution of personal liberties through Obamacare and the explosive regulatory climate is palpable. We cannot leave in power an individual who will appoint justices with tepid regard for our Constitution and who himself appears to have an underlying disregard for the system of government that has been the worldwide ideal for some 240 years.

We must elect a president who to his core understands, celebrates, articulates and will govern according to the standards inherent in the Constitution.

    Read when possible.

This is about America, the Constitution, and Obama has broken it.

He’ll never call Obama out or tell Obama to go to hell, because then he might not get invited to the next cocktail reception or Georgetown soiree, or worst of all, not get any more invites to the Oval Office. Alinsky-Trained Obama Tramples on Peoples’ Core Values in the United States & Kenya

The Catholic Church should have seen the freedom of religion travesty coming because the Obama administration has a history of forcing their beliefs down the throats of others around the globe.

Archbishop Dolan spoke with Obama in the White House and was promised that Catholic institutions would not be forced to offer employees insurance for birth control [I don’t know why we have to pay for other peoples’ sex lives anyway. I do not buy into the “women’s health” garbage. Let the collectivists pay for it themselves and leave the rest of us out of it.]

Obama broke his promise to the Archbishop, or maybe he lied, I can’t know his heart but I can guess.

NY Daily News: Archbishop Timothy Dolan said Thursday he’s “skeptical” of President Obama and accused him of breaking a promise by forcing Catholic institutions to offer employees insurance for birth control.

As he gears up for his trip to Rome to be made a cardinal, Dolan shows no sign of easing up his attacks on the White House over the contraception controversy — which has spawned its first lawsuit.

Appearing on “CBS This Morning,” he said that when he met with Obama in November in the Oval Office, he was assured the administration would not do anything to “impede” the Catholic Church.

Obama used taxpayer money to force abortion on Kenyans who are morally opposed to it.

Life News: A recent investigation by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress, revealed that the Obama administration has broken the law. The GAO’s report establishes that at least one Obama guarantee openly lobbied to expand abortion in Kenya despite the longstanding law, known as the Siljander Amendment, that prohibits U.S. tax dollars from being used to lobby for or against abortion in other countries.

But at least one Obama guarantee did just that and more. The report reveals that the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) received $400,000 from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to, according to the grant’s stated purpose, “contribute to the enactment of a revised constitution of Kenya that resolves the underlying causes of conflict.”

Apparently, we spent $23 million on it. How dare he use taxpayer money to corrupt the values and beliefs of another country!

Fox News: A Republican lawmaker is accusing the White House of “unconscionable” and “illegal” acts for its role in Kenya’s referendum on a new constitution, which would legalize abortion in the country for the first time.

Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey cited a report by the U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID, that estimated that more than $23 million in U.S. taxpayer funds have been spent on the referendum. Smith and other conservatives have complained that at least some of that money has been spent in support of the proposed constitution, possibly violating U.S. law.

“Under no circumstances should the U.S. government take sides,” Smith said at a news conference Wednesday. “Yet that is precisely what the Obama administration has done.”

Whether the US Catholic Bishops or Church, in general, has allowed the left’s perverted definition of compassion to subvert common sense opposition to Obamacare and liberal policies, we all must unite to oppose this regime. I’m not pleased about prior milquetoast Catholic support for liberals and utterly denounce it, but we can all now say we all, whatever the denomination, are equally at risk of losing our liberties to these monsters. Enough with the sniping within the ranks, we have a common foe to defeat.

Obamacare vs. the Constitution: A trifecta of rights denied

First, the assault on the free exercise of religion. Only churches themselves are left alone. Beyond the churchyard gate, religious autonomy disappears. Every other religious institution must bow to the state because, by this administration’s regulatory definition, church schools, hospitals and charities are not “religious” and thus have no right to the free exercise of religion — no protection from being forced into doctrinal violations commanded by the state.

Second, the assault on free enterprise. To solve his own political problem, the president presumes to order a private company to enter into a contract for the provision of certain services — all of which must be without charge. And yet, this breathtaking arrogation of power is simply the logical extension of Washington’s takeover of the private system of medical care — a system Obama farcically pretends to be maintaining.

Under Obamacare, the state treats private insurers the way it does government-regulated monopolies and utilities. It determines everything of importance. Insurers, by definition, set premiums according to risk. Not anymore. The risk ratios (for age, gender, smoking, etc.) are decreed by Washington. This is nationalization in all but name. The insurer is turned into a middleman, subject to state control — and presidential whim.

Third, the assault on individual autonomy. Every citizen without insurance is ordered to buy it, again under penalty of law. This so-called individual mandate is now before the Supreme Court — because never before has the already hypertrophied Commerce Clause been used to compel a citizen to enter into a private contract with a private company by mere fact of his existence.

This constitutional trifecta — the state invading the autonomy of religious institutions, private companies and the individual citizen — should not surprise. It is what happens when the state takes over one-sixth of the economy.

In 2010, when all this lay hazily in the future, the sheer arrogance of Obamacare energized a popular resistance powerful enough to deliver an electoral shellacking to Obama. Yet two years later, as the consequences of that overreach materialize before our eyes, the issue is fading. This constitutes a huge failing of the opposition party whose responsibility it is to make the opposition argument.

Every presidential challenger says that he will repeal Obamacare on Day One. Well, yes. But is any of them making the case for why? (more here)

  • Patty

The Republicans in Congress are the minority. They need to stand firm on Obama care. Many have but being a minority doesn’t mean just a few speak out. They are need to be visible and make a firm and resonating speech about what Obama is dong to our Constitution. And soon.

  • wanumba

Since when does the actions of another be an individual’s excuse for not doing what’s right?

The issue stands on its own. Everyone is a sinner, we are no better than anyone else and we always have to work with what we’ve been dealt. Let those who have public access say what should be said, but it’s no substitute for the massed power of the the salt of the Earth to stand firm and unite with others who understand what is at stake.

I see wormtongues have been dispersed to come up with a thousand excuses to wither in a chair instead of rising to battle.

  • Patty

    Obama’s war on Religious Freedom

Welcome to the real ObamaCare, whereby a handful of leftists in Washington, D.C., impose the views of their big-money donors on more than 300 million Americans. If the Obama mandate for contraception remains intact, then liberals will next demand that Americans pay for other objectionable items that are not really medical care.

We can expect future mandates, under the guise of “health care,” to include sex-change operations, late-term abortions, embryonic stem-cell use and a variety of other procedures that many Americans do not support and certainly do not want to be compelled to foot the bill for. Obama’s directive for abortifacient drugs opens a slippery slope that would erode the moral authority of religious institutions in America.

Obama and the liberals have overplayed their hand. By baring their teeth, these lackeys for the Left have awakened Democratic voters to the real contempt that liberals hold for religious values.

All 181 U.S. Catholic bishops oppose Obama’s mandate, and Rasmussen polling estimates that 65 percent of Catholic Americans also oppose it. There are about 75 million American Catholics, most of whom have traditionally been Democratic voters but wouldn’t hesitate to cross party lines to defend their church leaders.

It will be fascinating to see how many Democratic politicians up for re-election this November side with Obama and against religious organizations. Liberals are just fine with throwing some Democratic incumbents overboard to advance far-left goals, just as the enactment of ObamaCare in 2010 cost many Democrats their congressional seats.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’s congressional testimony made clear that the Obama administration is dug in permanently to enforce the regulation that religiously affiliated institutions must offer their employees health insurance that includes abortion drugs, sterilization and contraceptives. Of course, insurance companies price their products to make a profit, so clearly the cost will be concealed and distributed so many will pay for services that violate their religious beliefs.

Dick Morris exposed how George Stephanopoulos outed the Obama strategy behind this outrageous action. Knowing that abortion is no longer a winning issue for Democrats, Obama wanted to shift the debate to contraception.

However, his ploy has failed. He really shifted the debate to religious liberty and to how the Obama administration is planning to force Americans to pay for procedures that their religion teaches them is morally wrong.

    #1 infedel task force,

You hit the nail on the head. The reason why Obama thinks he doesn’t have to follow the Constitution is because the Democrats haven’t been following it since 1933! And since have had an uninterrupted deconstruction of this nations laws, and a rebuilding of and elimination of our Constitutional law making process. It started out with the deconstruction of our education system by declaring it racist and discreminatory against Blacks, that if education cannot be open to everyone then it has to be deconstructed and rebuilt where it can be. The next thing they did was destroy the nuclear family by making it impossible for the mother to be the homemaker and whose role in the home is rasing our children according to the word of God. Then they went after our religious beliefs by accusing all Christians bigots and racists because White churches excluded Blacks and anyone else it believed to be undesireable and unclean. They claimed America being a nation of values couldn’t tolerate a faith that allowed such a thing to exist if America was going to be the open and compassionate society it claimed it was. They were going to deconstruct that, as is apparent in their attacks on Santorum, and rebuild America’s value system to be inclusive of everyone no matter if they believed in God or not, as is evidenced by significance being given to atheists over Christian, and a threat to Islam as the original religion of peace and love. Then they attacked our wealth building capability. By taking over the economy and manipulating it so that we could no longer rely on our jobs to provide our wealth to keep churches, and institutions we believed in and had taken generations to build could no longer be supported. That was the last nail in the coffin of all things White people believed in that kept us in control of the society. Now, they are in control of the society and when they say White owned insurance companies will provide something that is religiously repugnant, we will do as we are ordered, or else!

If you take a look at the Communist Manefesto you will see that it was followed to the letter. That’s how all those things were gotten rid of in Russia when the Communists took that country over from the people and destroyed the foundation of it’s society.

  • WillofLa

    And Pattie,

I like your research in all these articles you site. All of it is evidence to prove what Obama is saying is opposite of what he does. I’ve told people to ignore what he says, and concentrate on what he does because that is what he believes in, not what he’s telling people. If he says he’s going to create more jobs, he really means he’s going to destroy more jobs. If he says he’s going to get us off Middle Eastern oil, he really means he’s going to make us more dependent on Arab oil!

The man is a habitual liar, but not really. What he’s doing is following something else other than Christian beliefs in telling the truth. But as a Muslim it is commanded by the Koran to never tell the truth to a infedel, always lie to him. He’s not a real Muslim but he believes in Islamic ideology as it is applied to our society. And to top it off he’s a Marxist who is following Rules For Radical’s and the Communist Manefesto from his training by those individuals Frank Davis, and Saul Alinsky as to what he needs to do once in the political system. You destroy the country from the inside out. Back in the Hippie days that was what was learned, and that was that no change will take place by butting heads with the cops all the time and demonstrating in the streets. All that does is build alot of bad press for your cause. The way to do it is to join in and become one with the system, and once inside you hace access to all the workings that make our system work. That is what you destroy and change, and then the whole country will change. Bingo!!

One thing is to remember that it was the Roman Catholic Crusades that went up against the muslims and defeated them. Is it any wonder Obama has a problem with the Roman Catholic Church? No, Obama has to destroy America and the R.C. Church. I am with Glenn Beck here ; however, I must say there is more to this:

The Roman Catholic Church stands for Big Hierarchy and Bureaucracy almost as much as it stands for Jesus Christ. It stood by the Ancien Regime while the French peasants suffered for centuries; similar stories in Spain, Italy, and the rest of Europe. Accordingly, to a significant extent it has [IMHO] misapplied many important lessons Jesus left us.

If the Church of Big Hierarchy and Big Buraeurcracy would confined itself more to the Gospel in the first place and less to currying power and influence with world powers and leaders, it and the rest of us would be better off. Indeed the Party of Big Government & Secular Humanism (i.e. the Democrats) might not be nearly so influential, and we all might not even be so confronted with this problem now as well as a mess of other problems

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Roman Catholic Church, besides teaching lessons, learned a few?

No, I’m not Catholic now. Never have been and never will be. And while I can see where Joanne’s coming from (“People can unite as Christians, but ‘we are not all Catholics now’…”), I don’t think one needs to identify herself/himself as a Christian to stand up with liberty and oppose the current administration and the legislators who want to deny the liberty to Catholic institutions to refuse to take part in and fund something in opposition to one of the basic principles and beliefs of the foundation and earliest ancestors, if you will, of those very institutions, going back centuries before the beginnings of medicine, of health insurance, of the US Federal govt and, of course, of the US itself.

The leaders and teachers of the Catholic church and the business entities it’s spawned haven’t earned it as they sure didn’t have our back in 2008 or ever before then, either, but we should have theirs now because standing with liberty is the right thing to do. We can always hope that they’ll finally learn who their real friends are and see that they’ve been working all of these decades with those who are eager to betray and destroy them, and, finally, get their *sses on the right side of the fence and stay here. (Probably won’t happen, not with the leaders, anyway, but one can still hope for the congregants to finally see the light.)

Aside from the assault on religion, this presidential decree orders private insurance companies to provide a service/benefit for free.

I would like to hear any Constitutional argument that can justify this.

And, again where are the Republicans? We have again one single voice, this time it’s Paul Ryan. What is wrong with these people?

  • Jeff

Ummmm, I’m not a Catholic, now or ever (strike that, directly witnessing a message delivered by Our Lady of Guadelupe from Heaven itself might change my mind). I believe that Catholic institutions have a constitutional right not to pay for contraception. I also believe that the constitution would prohibit certain government funding of religious organizations under circumstances that would amount to a government endorsement a particular religion or belief. All that being said, Santorum stinks. So does Romney, so let’s get a candidate that will focus on restoring the economy (i.e. very tough choices that need to be made now.)

Previously the Bishops tried to palm off Obama-care on the American people because it accords with the Roman Catholic doctrine of social justice..

So what shall I do now that the Catholic Church has awakened to the fact that Obama-care is an attack on liberty? I will wait and see if the Catholic hierarchy has an epiphany when it comes to their doctrine of social justice which is too much like liberation theology.

The Frenchman Bastiat if he were here now would call the Catholic doctrine of social justice a crime.

“Sometimes the law defends plunder and participates in it. Thus the beneficiaries are spared the shame and danger that their acts would otherwise involve… But how is this legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them and gives it to the other persons to whom it doesn’t belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish that law without delay – No legal plunder; this is the principle of justice, peace, order, stability, harmony and logic.”

    Steve – oldline conservative.

Your premise that the Catholic Church puts itself above Scripture is simply not true. Did the Church come before Scripture? Yes. Did the Church compile what we now know as Scripture? Yes again. Did the Church preserve Scripture through painstakingly hand-copying it onto parchment using ink wells and stylus? Yes, once again. Ironically, you owe a lot to the Catholic Church with regard to Scripture.

Ironically again, you claim the same power and authority over Scripture that you deny the Church. Oh yes, you will claim you “just read the Scripture and it tells you the plain truth.” But the fact of the matter is that you bring to that interpretation years of your own tradition – what you were taught by your pastors through the years. The Church does the same thing, except its years of teaching go back 2000 years. Go figure. Hypocrisy is just plain ugly.

Actually, oldlineconservative, you might want to support the Catholics.

If the government can get away with denying religious liberty to one group, it will certainly try it with another. There’s been speculation that the Jews may be the next target, followed by any, and every, other denominimation the administration disagrees with—which will be most of the Christian ones.

“Never ask for whom the bell tolls. . . ”

We’re past the point where we can choose our battles.

No, Mr. Beck, I am a Catholic; you abandoned your faith for the cult of Mormonism. And now you wish to, what, absolve yourself of that error by claiming brotherhood with those you’ve abandoned? There is only one way you can be saved, Mr. Beck, and that is to reject the ravings of Brigham Young and his magic glasses, underwear, and beans, and ask Jesus Christ for forgiveness. You made an unfortunate choice years back, but you are not beyond forgiveness and saving. None of us ever are. But simply making a political point without rejecting the cult you, yourself, chose to join is not enough. You must ask Christ to accept you back into his heart and recognize your grave mistake.

Mr. Romney was born into his cult; you joined it. Either leases ether it’s you or him speaking, please do not try to fog over the vast differences between the teachings of Our Savior and the teachings of a perverted madman and his undergarments. If you wish to help Mr. Romney, you’d be best steering way clear of this particular discussion.
