Cardinal George Warns – Democrat’s HHS Mandate Means There Will Be No Catholic Hospitals in 2 Years: “This Is a Form of Theft”

Cardinal George from Chicago warned this week that there may be no Catholic hospitals left in two years due to the Democrat’s HHS mandate that forces religions to
The Catholic New World reported, via Catholic Culture:

Warning that the Church is being “despoiled of her institutions” as “freedom of conscience and of religion become a memory from a happier past,” Cardinal Francis George of Chicago observes that “the Catholic Church in the United States is being told she must ‘give up’ her health care institutions, her universities and many of her social service organizations.”

“So far in American history, our government has respected the freedom of individual conscience and of institutional integrity for all the many religious groups that shape our society,” he continues. “The government has not compelled them to perform or pay for what their faith tells them is immoral. That’s what we’ve meant by freedom of religion. That’s what we had believed was protected by the U.S. Constitution. Maybe we were foolish to believe so.” …

…What will happen if the HHS regulations are not rescinded? A Catholic institution, so far as I can see right now, will have one of four choices: 1) secularize itself, breaking its connection to the Church, her moral and social teachings and the oversight of its ministry by the local bishop. This is a form of theft. It means the Church will not be permitted to have an institutional voice in public life. 2) Pay exorbitant annual fines to avoid paying for insurance policies that cover abortifacient drugs, artificial contraception and sterilization. This is not economically sustainable. 3) Sell the institution to a non-Catholic group or to a local government. 4) Close down …

Freedom of worship was guaranteed in the Constitution of the former Soviet Union. You could go to church, if you could find one. The church, however, could do nothing except conduct religious rites in places of worship-no schools, religious publications, health care institutions, organized charity, ministry for justice and the works of mercy that flow naturally from a living faith. All of these were co-opted by the government. We fought a long cold war to defeat that vision of society.

The strangest accusation in this manipulated public discussion has the bishops not respecting the separation between church and state. The bishops would love to have the separation between church and state we thought we enjoyed just a few months ago, when we were free to run Catholic institutions in conformity with the demands of the Catholic faith, when the government couldn’t tell us which of our ministries are Catholic and which not, when the law protected rather than crushed conscience. The state is making itself into a church.

“If you haven’t already purchased the Archdiocesan Directory for 2012, I would suggest you get one as a souvenir,” he continued.

Freedom of religion in America was to protect the people of religion from the government – now more than ever, the people of religion need protection from the muslim-in-chief. Is it any wonder, Obama strikes at the Catholic Church. It was the Roman Catholic Crusades that challenged and defeated the Muslim instigated crusades against everyone not muslim.

  • FurryGuy

The America I grew up is no more, and never will be the same no matter how this pans out. Even if the HHS Mandate is rolled back, and ObamaCare is repealed, the slow creep of Socialism continues apace because people are being propagandized daily to accept it.

Want to disagree? For instance: why even for many conservatives is talking about repealing/restructuring SS a no-no and considered political death?

  • Joanne

It is pretty hard to turn America into an Islamic country, when you have the Catholic religion with such a strong foothold in the U.S. in so many aspects of the lives of Americans.

  • Ma

On second thought let’s just shut down all the “catholic” charities who take money from the feds. And then compare who well the “poor” have been served by the evil Catholics versus the O govt. O is going to be re-elected since Hillary said so and don’t bother with elections or Dole 2.0 aka Richie Rich or Mittens. Govt is so much better in providing and delivering services than the evil Cahtolics.

  • Patty

He most certainly did. This will be an election issue and a referendum on Obama and his persistent and interfering on our faith and freedom. Stomping on the Constitution and our rights as individuals under the #1 law of our nation.

If we are not to live by our faith and Obama believes, he who sat in a Radical church, can dictate our faith then we are done.

Our faith is coming to question? 97% of journalists are pro-choice. Churches are fighting for what the believe in because of Obama? Time for action and time to send a clear message.

Obama nor anyone will try to take God out of our life. They are fighting hard we must fight even harder. I regret that Obama has created this problem, a President of America?

If, in my early days when I organized… neighborhood in Chicago, which was 95 per cent Roman Catholic, I had tried to communicate this, even through the experience of the residents, whose economic plight was aggravated by large families, that would have been the end of my relationship with the community. Judge rules in favor of Muslim attacker in Pennsylvania

Basically, an atheist pretending to be Zombie Muhammad in a parade was attacked while marching by a Muslim man who took offense to his portrayal of Muhammad. They called the police thus and it went to court. But surprisingly, the district judge (reported to be a Muslim himself) ruled in favor of the attacker, dismissing the charges while not even reviewing the video, but lecturing and scolding the atheist on his offense to Islam.

    Sunstein.

The pro-life group Eagle Forum also released analysis of Sunstein’s positions and determined that he regards euthanasia as a major component of health care legislation and supports loosening regulations on organ donation.

In the article WND covered, Eagle Forum notes Sunstein advocates for government bureaucracy to rely on the “value of a statistical life year” when doing cost-benefit analysis as opposed to the “value of a statistical life.” That would lead to health care decisions involving rationing and euthanasia.

He states that this would “likely result in significantly lower [health] benefits calculations for elderly people, and significantly higher benefits calculations for children.”

He states: “I urge that the government should indeed focus on life-years rather than lives. A program that saves young people produces more welfare than one that saves old people.”

The group concludes, “Sunstein’s views on cost-effectiveness analysis is worrisome at best, especially since as head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, he will play a major role in defining the government’s handling of health care.”

‘He will be just one major player in the massive bureaucracy needed to regulate the very loosely-defined H.R. 3200, Obama’s proposed health care plan,” it says.

So really it won’t be hard to Islamisize and/or Socialize the US, it is already happening. Remember many Catholics, including priests, supported this president until this HHS mandate became public knowledge. They were FOR larger government, for other people, until they were targeted.

This situation is a bad replay of nearly every emerging dictatorship in history, especially the 20th century.

  • Joanne

For Obama it is always about the end result, and yes, Catholic institutions and churches closing their doors would be the result Obama would be looking for. With islam there is no other religion tolerated. Socialists always want to rid a nation of the belief in God, because people who believe in God have no fear to fight for the death for their beliefs; whereas, what an atheist has on this earth is all they can hope for. The nazis aligned with islamic leaders in WWII and the socialists have again aligned with islamics to target Christians and Jews. The humourous part is that socialists and islamists both think they will be the ones to the rule the roost in the end.

Sometimes it takes a while for people to clue in, but the important part is they clue in before it is too late. Perhaps Obama thought the Catholic establishment was going to lay down and take it. We will see who gets their way.

Unfortunately this comes from Cardinal George who has a history of backing down from principle. If you ever seen Fr Pflagler’s outrageous antics and George’s actions you would see that the Chicago RC Church isn’t one to depend on. Pflagler would get ‘suspended’ for about a day and then george would have him reinstated because of his connections to ‘community organizers’.

Here’s an idea, Cardinal George: 1. Don’t comply, 2. Don’t pay the fine, 3. Block the door of the hospital with your body if Pope Barry’s goons come to shut you down. Isn’t that what the earliest defenders of the faith did? The martyrs? God needs faithful warriors, not weak, whiny supplicants. St Polycarp, pray for us.

The Catholic institutions should not shut down, but they should stand their ground and fight. Obama is such a sick clucker, he could possibly be looking for a force who might actually stand up to challenge him, so he can start his culling of Americans who oppose him. No opposition to Obama’s dictatorship will go to waste. Does Obama’s evil know no end!

  • The Elector of Saxony

Surely the Catholic Church understood the history of socialism when it embraced the radical Left in the 1960’s. As a young Catholic School student in the 1980’s I had radical nuns and brothers preaching in class about the evil of American racism, imperialism, and consumerism. They posited that the only Christian way forward was a new order that embraced sharing with all the peoples of the world, in short, world wide Socialism. A renunciation of the American way of life was their position. They passed out tracts about the violence spread by America and its policies around the world and the suffering, hungry browns and blacks that White America starved to death in order to fund the war machine and rockets to the moon. Well, the Red Chickens have come home to roost, eh Cardinal?

Every Leftist government in history has obliterated religious freedom from Stalin to Hitler to Mao to Castro, these Leftists will be no different. Surely the Church remembered the history of Socialism in the 20th Century, DURING the 20th Century!!!!??? We’re next, and partly because the Church helped the Left gain its chokehold on our body politic.

  • Those of you who think that the Catholic hospitals could close and withhold services, facilities and help to force Obama to back down: that won’t happen, and here is why.

Obama will use force to re-open the hospitals.

He will use provisions within the new law to order the Catholic hospitals to re-open. He’ll order their licenses transferred to new owners.

    What? Yes.

Every state licenses health care facilities. You can’t open or run one without a license, and in most states you CAN’T CLOSE ONE WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF THE LICENSING BOARD (usually the state health board, though it varies from state to state).

If Cardinal George orders the Catholic hospitals in Chicago to close, the state of Illinois will order them re-opened, as they were not ‘given permission’ to close. Check the state law, it’s very clear.

The law exists by the way to prevent disruptions in health care — say a hospital was going to go bankrupt (it happens occasionally). By requiring permission to close, there is an orderly transfer of patients, etc to other hospitals.

So if the good Cardinal George tries this, he’ll be in court defending it.

That takes us to the next point: if the Church tries to enforce its closure of the hospitals by directing employees not to report, by chaining the doors, etc., and ignores the state order to reopen, the state CAN TRANSFER THE LICENSE TO ANOTHER OPERATOR. Who can then operate the hospital. Who says? State law, that’s who. Nice system.

What about the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment? Yes, that will apply to the physical plant, and the state would — eventually — have to come up with the money, either directly if the state operates the hospital or indirectly if another corporation takes over. That will take time, a lot of time if it’s all tied up in court, and who knows how the auditors, evaluators and appraisers will value the property? Ask someone who lost their house so that the state could build a new highway.

So it works like this: Catholic hospitals close. Say nationwide, all at once. Obama declares an ’emergency’ (which it would be). He leans on the states. Some governors, namely all the Democrats, use their state powers to force the hospitals back open. That breaks the back of the protest, and the Church has to fold.

In the other states with Pub governors, Obama has a variety of other levers. He could order Medicaid funds held, other transfers held, etc. I haven’t read all the pages of the new Obamacare and all the regs that have been written (has anyone?) but I’ll just bet there are rules in there that allow Obama to do more than that.

Think this is far-fetched? Heck, over 60 years ago we had laws that allowed Harry Truman to order striking railroad and steel workers back to their jobs, and to re-open closed steel mills.

So Cardinal George is in my estimation bluffing. He could close the hospitals, but the state (the Feds and the states) simply will not let it happen for very long. The end game is the Church loses all its property. Throw in some hysterical propaganda and you could end up seeing some violence against the Church.

  • Perhaps the answer is to simply discontinue all employer provided health insurance at Catholic hospitals and other Catholic institutions and set up an employee health benefit fund that allows each employee to shop for the insurance he/she wants using the funds allocated to his/her account.

The employer is relieved of the moral issues of what the insurance covers since it has not selected the coverage.

Hear no evil; see no evil; speak no evil.

  • Stuart

So Steve I suppose the Catholic Church should simply obey orders. All hail Comrade Zero our Dear Leader.

    #26,
These are leftists parading around as Catholics. They’ve infiltrated everything. Jimmy Carter started the Dept. of Education for the explicit purpose of indoctrination. Mark Levin who worked for Ronald Reagan talked about going through things left over from the Carter administration. He said the found Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals in boxes that were given out to Vista workers. This is what they’ve been trying to accomplish all of these years.

These aren’t Catholics promoting this stuff, they are leftists, who aren’t abiding by Catholicism.

Listen to this audio of Mark Levin’s Friday show. He had a guest on who talked about the attacks on Christianity in this country. You’ll need to speed up to the 92:00 mark.

    Democrat gas hypocrisy

RUSH: Michael Janovsky at the New York Times, April 24th, 2006, about six years ago: “Democrats Eager to Exploit Anger Over Gas Prices.” This is back in 2006. The Democrats were running for office in the midterm elections trying to talk us into a recession. This is after they had failed at trying to talk us into failure in Iraq. “Democrats running for Congress are moving quickly to use the most recent surge in oil and gasoline prices to bash Republicans over energy policy, and more broadly, the direction of the country. With oil prices hitting a high this week and prices at the pump topping $3 a gallon in many places…” We’re now over $5 in California. In 2006, with “prices at the pump topping $3 a gallon in many places Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic Senate candidate in Minnesota, is making the issue the centerpiece of her campaign. Ms. Klobuchar says it ‘is one of the first things people bring up’ at her campaign stops. To varying degrees, Democrats around the country are following a similar script that touches on economic anxiety and populist resentment against oil companies.”

    Yep!

“‘It’s a metaphor for an economy that keeps biting people despite overall good numbers,’ said Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York…” What else do we have a Chuck-U? Oh, Chuck-U is in the news today, folks. Chuck-U tells Clinton to pressure Saudi Arabia to pump more oil. Senator Chuck-U Schumer “wants Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to press…” She’s got her own section in the program today for her own rampant hypocrisy. (We’ll get to that in due course.) Chuck-U Schumer “wants Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to press Saudi Arabia to boost output as rising prices are hitting consumer at the gasoline pump.” Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

#28, Steve White, while you may think that the federal government would have the ability to force Catholic hospitals to remain open under a “public good” theory, those hospitals, as you noted, are allowed to remain open under licensing by the states, not the federal government or any federal agencies. Those hospitals, will, and could, close without notice in most states.

This would create a “crisis” situtation in the delivery of heath care in most states (there are more Republican governors than Democrat governors) and would dump the charity aspect of hospital care onto any city, county or state funded hospitals. When the availability of local hospital care is reduced to only one city funded hospital, the outcry will be heard around the world.

There has already been a law suit filed on behalf of the “conscience clause” by a number of states, being led by Texas. States have already seen their 10th Amendment rights eroded beyand recognition, and many are now beginning to fight back.

If the legislature of Illinois wants to take on what is a very large portion of their state (Catholics) they should. I guarantee there will be U-Haul vans lined up at the state house in the next election as Democrats are booted out of office.

Obama has exercised power not specifically granted him by the Constitution, but that power is not infinate. He will overstep, and this just might have been that step. The Catholic Church, along with the Baptists, Lutherens, Methodists and the Jews have been providing hospitals since before there were any “public” hospitals. You may think they will not be able to close them, but you are wrong. They (the faiths) can also close old folks homes, orphanages, adoption centers, health clinics, etc.

I would be interested in reading the Illinois statute that (you claim exists) that says a hospital much have permission to close and that if it doesn’t continue to operate, that the property can be confiscated and titled to another. So give me that statute.

I couldn’t agree more, bg.The thing is we’ve always been at odds..the Bishops just thought the situation could be tolerated. But tolerance only goes in one direction with the Left. This war that oBama has declared on the Church reminds me of the story of Braveheart. The heads of the clans thought their situation was tolerable with the English. Retire05,

Steve White, like many Democrats, assume that lawyers can solve any problem, including that of foreign enemies trying to kill us.

Hospitals and other Catholic social service organizations are more than numbers. They are staff, people, individuals with consciences.

The Democrats seem to believe that only union members can refuse to work.

What happens when 40% of the Catholic hospital staff refuses to show up, including those with the pass words to the encrypted hospital IT data bases, including much of the medical diagnostic equipment and hospital pharmacy?

Like many in the legal profession, White pretends people are things.

so, cardinal, caring for the sick and needy goes right out the window as soon as politics becomes involved, eh? the fact is that these ‘catholic’ institutions could not operate without federal funding…but they would rather bite the hand that feeds them, pick up their rosary beads and run away crying than to continue to administer to those in need if they are expected to follow the same rules as any other business. is this really what jesus would do, cardinal?

Team Hopenchange have already agreed that their ruling already exempts “purely” religious institutions. Not a problem. Here’s a suggestion that will, 1) keep the hospitals, schools and other institutions open, 2) keep the government off your backs, and 3) grow the Roman Catholic faith in America like mad:

Limit those who will be served to only practicing Roman Catholics in good standing. Even offer your own health insurance plans for Roman Catholics.

In Nov 2008 I suggested that the US church sell off her hospitals and use the proceeds to builf in more needy locales and offer to migrate medical staff out of the US to preemptively avoid the theft of assets and denial of conscience rights that appeared iminent under the obamist regime. Unfortunately this voice in the wilderness was ignored and now it is too late.

The Catholic Church has already sold her freedom when she groveled before politicians to get “funding” instead of maintaining the integrity of religious values. In their passion to receive favors and donations from well-heeled powerbrokers, Bishops turned the other way as these same entities voted pro”choice” and suffocated the “old” ways of ordinary Catholics. As an employee of a Catholic institution, I saw fellow employees take clients for abortions, work in Planned Parenthood clinics, take down crucifixes and hide rosaries as being too “controversial” for public viewing. The zeal to feed and “serve” the poor (mostly with government grants that carried caveats against “religious” interference) led to widespread disrespect for the salvation of souls, morality and Catholic integrity.

What’s left to save? Sadly, I think its only the sign outside that says “Catholic”on it somewhere, the rest is empty of anything that actually fits the definition. Like someone else said, these are spineless men and women in Catholic leadership today- they rattle the bars but couldn’t even dream giving up the prestige, the comforts, and come out of the isolation of their ivory towers for change and the risks civil disobedience. Just as with the peace you claim to embrace: let there be courage in America, and let it begin with YOU.

The Left needs to be repeatedly called out on their FASCISM, BIGOTRY, INTOLERANCE, HATE, etc. They have, for years, used such terms as political smears. They were just more arrows in the quiver.

Here, we can actually employ such terms in an entirely truthful manner. The Democrats hate Catholics. I’ve known it for years. Now it’s finally dawned on many naive bishops. The USCCB now stands united against Obama.

Anti-Catholic Bigotry is nothing new in America. The 1840’s saw the “Know-Nothings” and the burning of Catholic churches in Philadelphia. The 1920’s saw the KKK’s opposition to the candidacy of Al Smith.

Obama and his supporters are cut from the same clothe.

    BCre8f2 commented:
“The Catholic Church as been a huge proponent of Obama and the rest of the Dems, as well as the ‘healthcare’ bill. I’m not feeling too sorry for them right now. Maybe now they will begin to see that socialism is NOT a charitable act but a way to take power and reserve it to the few of the ruling class.”

BCre8f2: There are millions of Cathiolics who are just like you, and are worried sick over the HHS Mandate. (It will also force the closure of Catholic schools and Catholic-owned businesses, BTW.) You don’t have to care about the bishops. I don’t. They are only part of the Church. Of the two of us, I’m the one who has been saddled with these fools my entire life. No, socialism is not charity. Socialism is theft by coercion.

The USCCB notwithstanding, the Catholic Church is the larget charitable organization on the face of the earth. That isn’t done with taxpayers’ money. That’s done with my money. Also, what about Catholic schools? Catholic schools are examples of people doing for themselves, with the help of outside Catholics when needed. Catholic schools save YOU money.

We papists are not so bad. We both are in the same fight. Hopefully my bishops finally get it. I think Dolan gets it. Obama lied to his face, and Dolan knows it.

ME2: In post #65, you describe the moral decay and lack of anything approaching Catholicism in your ostensibly Catholic workplace. I share your disgust. I have a relative attending a Jesuit university (it’s not just the Jesuits), and I am none too pleased about it.

Unfortunately, the HHS Mandate won’t just distroy these Catholic-in-name-only shells of their former serves. It also threatens the small, truly Catholic colleges that have sprung up to serve the needs of Catholics. (Thomas Aquinas, Belmont Abbey, WY Catholic, Christendom, etc.) Schools like Notre Shame, Villainova, etc. long ago not ago turned their backs on those who were more than Catholic-Lite.
