Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) announced that she would not seek reelection and will step down next week in a video message.
Via The Washington Post:

Giffords was shot last year during a Tuscon meet-and-greet with her Tucson constituents. She showed great courage in her recovery.
Please keep Gabby and her family in your prayers.
UPDATE: Gov. Jan Brewer will call an April special election to replace Giffords.

That was a VERY touching video.
It shows how in an instant, our lives can be changed forever. I am drawn to wonder if we have a broken mental health system in America when so many people like the man who shot Gabby Giffords are just walking around like time bombs.
I wish her the best in her recovery.
listingstarboard commented:
Not too mention the fact that under Obamacare that she supports most people would not have been priveleged enough to get the medical care that saved her life. Of course Congresspeople are exempt from Obamacare. So while they destroy the health care system for the rest of us, hypocrites like Giffords are the few and the priveleged that can still get the best medical care. Meanwhile the others who lost their lives that day are long forgotten.

WillofLa commented:
Even though in most cases people who have suffered like Gabby don’t return to their normal lifestyle after recovering from their injuries. I have been disabled for many years now and I will never be able to return to my normal lifestyle I once had. She is no exception even though she had the best medical treatment that the government could provide. Medical treatment that none of us could ever afford, unless you were a illegal Mexican alien or something like that.
At least I can say she will be able to do most things but not what she was doing which was being another leftist Socialist Democrat and I’m glad that she is one more less liberal we won’t have standing in the way of repairing the damage she and those before her have caused. Good riddens to her and I hope she has a comfortable existance living outside of government. But like Brady who was shot by a another fruit cake liberal trying to kill Reagan, John Hinkley might have been just like the nut who shot Gabby. But Brady was never able to fully go back to his work with the government like he was. It was his wife who started the Brady Foundation anti-gun organization that is still in existance after all this time. Gabby will do the same as most of all these leftist do outside the government. They have found that they can do as much damage outside the government as they can inside the government. The only difference is they get to vote while inside the government, but the same thing when she will be outside the government, she’ll be able to get some empty headed Democrat to vote for some leftist bill as if she was there herself.

American Patriot. Members of Congress have the same insurance as other federal employees, in fact they have options to choose HMO’s or PPO’s as do most in the private sector (for now). However, the government, or taxpayers, pay 72% of the costs for that coverage.
If one wants to nitpic, which I do, since the taxpayers pay their salaries, we still foot the bill for the remaining 28%. They are also privileged to receive care from Walter Reed and the Naval Medical Center, as well as from the physician at the Capitol, for a small fee, as well as treatment at military hospitals.
As a member of an elite class, Ms Gifford would have received primo care which is not afforded to many of the great unwashed.

Listen, American Patriot (what a misnomer if I ever saw one, and I’ve seen thousands) @ 26 and Agathon @ 25, effective 3 weeks ago my husband and I lost our health insurance because of the 42% premium increase caused by implementation of just a few of the obastardcare provisions that Giffords voted for, so don’t tell me about who pays Giffords’ health care. I DO. I pay all of hers with my tax money, you dumb jackasses, and have none for myself or my husband. I just turned 60 and my husband is 63. No health care. None. Zip. Nada. Zero. Get it? Now, if one of gets seriously ill, we will be wiped out financially. Giffords is a government employee, whether she’s elected or not – her salary and benefits come from the taxpayer and are tremendously generous, but that f*****g b****’s vote ensured that my health insurance would become prohibitive…..while I pay hers. So yes, hers is free because I help pay for it and it’s better than mine, which is none.
So screw you, Agathon, if I don’t fall all over myself sobbing at her video and wishing her well blah blah blah.

Remember, according to the fringe Left at the time, including many posters and commenters at DailyKos, Ms. Giffords was NOT LEFTIST ENOUGH (because of her stance on border control), and these folks had nothing but the usual bile and hatred (and death-wishes, natch) for her.
Also remember that Loughner had as a favorite movie Zeitgeist, a popular movie among the Jew-hating OWS-types on the Left.
But somehow, a “Targeted Districts” map made “by Sarah Palin herself” was what pushed him over the edge.
Just amazing, isn’t it? These are times of great deception, and great evil.
American Patriot commented:
Sasja ….
You are all wet. The government DOES NOT pay for 72% of health insurance coverage premiums. The reduction in premiums results from the simple fact that health insurance for federal employees and members of Congress fall under a huge group of insured people. Insurance companies also offer serious reductions in premium costs to employees and retirees from large private sector companies. Representative Giffords’ coverage may have fallen under her husband’s coverage as active military. That coverage is a condition of employment.
Maybe you would like to take that away from our military too?
Taqiyyotomist commented:
When a crime is committed which appears at first glance to be politically motivated, such as the shooting of an elected official, this is how the Left works:
He was either a Right Wing Limbaugh-listening Conservative Teabagger wacko….
Or if that is not the case, he was a lone lunatic with absolutely no political leanings whatsoever.
Those are the only two options for the leftist mind.
They said the same about the Kentucky Census worker (LEFTY)
They said the same about Joseph Stack (LEFTY)
They actually REVERSED the truth about Lee Harvey Oswald (EXTREME-COMMUNIST-LEFTY)
This confirms another long-held belief of mine, that the linear political spectrum, to the left, looks like this:
(nothing exists here)–(normal)–(rightwing)–(hard-right)–(extreme-right) –(hyper-conservative)–(ultra-conservative)–(ARCH-conservative)
From normal/good to the newly-coined “Arch-”, that’s all there is. If the subject in question is (to the rest of us) a lefty? Well, they aren’t on the spectrum… they’re just a lone nut with no political ideas whatsoever.
WITHOUT FAIL, this is the case, every single time a Lefty does evil.
Taqiyyotomist commented:
…and if it’s an actual (D) elected official that does the evil?
“Weeell, they all do it, both sides….what can you do?”
Sasja commented:
Just wait until those 70 years and older cannot receive life-saving neurological care because of their age. These “units”, not patients, will be subjected to death panels. A neurosurgeon will be expected to contact some bureaucrat for permission to administer even emergency measures. So all you who are fawning over Ms Giffords, remember when a member of your family is denied even the rudiments of health care, be sure to thank her.

AP, so now I know you’re just another bloodsucking parasite on the dole, too. Now I understand why you think the government money stream is some kind of limitless field of clover. Yes, you CHOSE to live off the taxpayers as a “federal civilian employee” and now you have the audacity to chastise those of us who CHOSE to work and produce such that we subsidized you then and continue to do so now. try to justify it all you want, but it makes perfect sense in your entitlement world that you and Giffords are both entitled to the very best I can afford and go on paying for because people like your heroine, Giffords, voted in a way that I can no longer afford to pay my own way, something both my husband and I have done all of our working lives. So, hooray for you for CHOOSING to be another parasitic government bloodsucking parasite.

AP @ 48, you implied it by stating that Giffords pays her health coverage out of her own pocket. Yeah, her own pocket filled with taxpayer money. Anybody who doesn’t get that her insurance is paid by the taxpayers doesn’t realize that Americans pay taxes and therefore must think the government’s money just occurs in nature limitlessly like rain from the sky, weeds in a field, or is limitlessly grown like a foodstuff.

rathernot@cbs.tv commented:
AP @ 50, if anybody here is displaying an OWS mentality, it’s you. You obviously think my pockets are bottomless pits of money that you and Giffords are entitled to or else you don’t realize how much I’ve paid in taxes, how many people I’ve employed, how many kids I put through Catholic school to keep them out of the government-run (also paid with my money) socialist education camps known as public schools. Then a commie like Giffords and the rest of her ilk come along and vote in a commie program that causes my own personal expense to take care of mine and my husband’s health insurance to climb to $1600 per month and you say I I am responsible for my own choices. Yeah, you’re right. I shouldn’t have done the right thing for the right reasons all those years. I should have considered only myself and not worked those 16 hour days to build a business, give to charities and sponsorships in my community, hire young people to get them started into the business world, none of that. I should have just taken my degree and gotten a fat government job so I could later kick back and tell the fools who supported me for 37 years how stupid they are and what bad choices they made.
rathernot@cbs.tv commented:
AP @ 54, few women were in the service during the years that I would have been at the age to enter. My husband served 4 years in the army, honorably discharged. We worship our military men and women, but not when they cop an attitude like yours and exhibit one of the most debilitated arsenals of critical thinking skills I’ve ever seen. The government’s money does not grow on trees or fall from the sky. It comes from people like me who run businesses and hire people.
I hope you and Ms. Gifford will be very happy together knowing that your thought process, to the extent it exists, priced two hard-working Americans and their employees out of their health insurance. That was YOUR choice.

No, I’m not. I may be off a percentage or two, but the government (aka, taxpayers) pay most of the premium, as is done in the private sector. Companies pick up the lyon’s share of premiums for their employees, or did until Bammycare, and so does the “government”. When you look at it, the taxpayers pay all the premium costs since it is the taxpayer who pays the congresscritter in the first place. But it is, what it is.
My problem is with people like Ms Gifford, the elite amongst us serfs, who has chosen to co-opt a very large section of the private sector and put under federal control. That is not acceptable, nor sustainable. And people complained about the HMO’s.
USMCDaughter. Her’s is not the only life to have been “brutally altered” by that terrible incident. I imagine the parents of a 9-year-old child had their lives “brutally altered”, along with those others whose lives were lost, including a man who saved hers and lost his.
Sorry, but I’ll reserve my compassion to those and to the countless others who are going to find their lives “brutally altered” if we don’t stop Bammycare.

Crony Capitalism
[Now this is only the second broadcast of our new series, yet we’ve
already made our choice for the best headline of the month. Here it is:
"Citigroup Replaces JPMorgan as White House Chief of Staff."
Behind that headline is a tangled web.
The new chief of staff is Jack Lew. He used to work for the giant banking conglomerate Citigroup. His predecessor as chief of staff is Bill Daley, who used to work at the giant banking conglomerate JPMorgan Chase. Daley was maestro of the bank’s global lobbying and the chief liaison to the White House.
Bill Daley replaced Obama’s first chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, who once worked for a Wall Street firm where he was paid a reported $18.5 million in less than three years.
The new chief of staff, Jack Lew, comes from Obama’s Office of Management and Budget, where he replaced Peter Orszag, who now works as vice chairman for global banking at the giant conglomerate Citigroup. Still following me?
It’s startling the number of high-ranking Obama officials who have spun through the revolving door between the White House and the sacred halls of investment banking.
But remember, it was Bush and Cheney’s cronies in big business who helped walk us right into the blast furnace of financial meltdown. Then they rushed to save the banks with taxpayer money.
But of course, Bush and Cheney aren’t the only ones to have a soft spot for financiers. Bankers seem to come and go pretty frequently at the White House. President Obama may call them "fat cats" and stir the rabble against them with populist rhetoric when it serves his purpose, but after the fiscal fiasco, he allowed the culprits to escape virtually scot-free. And when he’s here in New York, he dines with them frequently and eagerly accepts their big contributions.
Like his predecessors, Obama’s administration has also provided the banks with billions of low-cost dollars they used for high-yielding investments to make big profits.
It's a fact. The largest banks are actually bigger than they were when he took office. And earned more in the first two-and-a-half years of his term than they did during the entire eight years of the Bush administration.
And get this: President Obama’s new best friend, according to The New York Times, is Robert Wolf. They play golf, basketball, and they talk economics when Wolf is not raising money for the President’s re-election campaign. Now, just who is Robert Wolf? Well, <b.he's top dog at the U.S. branch of the giant Swiss bank UBS, the very bank that helped rich Americans evade taxes. Here, Senator Carl Levin describes some of the tricks used by UBS:]
much much more to this story, and it’s not pretty..

American Patriot. I, along with many, appreciate your sacrifices, and those who served, and are serving, in the military. Most times, saying “Thank you” does not seem enough.
You probably think I have been too harsh in my comments about Ms Giffords. I am glad for her and her family that she seems to be making a full recovery. However, the legacy she left while a member of Congress, even though she was a victim of violence, is not off limits. And I do feel she deserves no more consideration than the people who were also wounded or who died. I do not recall anyone caring how the others who were wounded were doing. Being a member of Congress does not make anyone more special than those they serve. Or it shouldn’t.
American Patriot commented:
Why, then, are some being so negative? Negativity accomplishes nothing for the people of Arizona or our country.
I applaud Governor Brewer too. She probably could have simply appointed a Republican to replace her vacancy. She chose to call for a special election instead.

I guess AP will be praying for Al Queda, too. “Bless them, for they are good and well-meaning. They just have different views. Kumbaya, dear Lord, kumbaya.”
What you originally took issue with was a couple other posters and me pointing out that Gifford has had the best health care in the world, courtesy of the taxpayers, and that she voted for obastardcare. THAT was your complaint, not what i said about Giffords, which was this, originally, “I wish Ms. Giffords and her Tea Party-hating husband and parents the best, as long as it takes place out of elected office.
What was missing from Ms. Giffords’ speech was a thank you to the taxpayers for providing her with the finest health care in the world, and a “Sorry, suckers, you ain’t gonna get any of it ’cause I helped make sure of that, haha!”
My prayers go to her constituents whom I hope will recognize her hypocrisy and vote for anti-obammycare partisan Tea Party reformer.
Prayers for the people who actually died that day and the media have forgotten.”
Notice that I wished her the best, as long as she’s not in office and that the “haha” (which I guess is what you mean by giggling) is in quotations as though quoting someone’s words in a satirical reference to what HER thoughts are about we who pay for her benefits but can no longer afford them for ourselves, NOT gigling at her injuries or the shooting event. You are a liar and a hypocrite for trying to imply I was giggling at her or wished her ill.
If you don’t like fire, stay out of the kitchen. If you can’t handle facts, go back to your fantasy world in which you think your services as a federal employee were so direly needed (we could dump 3/4 of you people and be fine) and KMA that’s been supporting you for decades. There are millions of people already being negatively impacted by obastardcare that Giffords voted for. Real men barely mention, let alone tout it as justification for bashing the taxpayers that fed, clothed and housed them for decades after their service. Certainly only the most entitlement mentality people use it to justify living on the taxpayers’ money for 37 years. which is seen as a huge huge job killer and effecting the recovery of the economy.
hahaha… you know what’s even funnier? …the keystone pipeline would create a significant amount of union jobs…. which the unions can’t possible be too thrilled about now with 0bama’s refusal to sign it. *lol*
so if like the unions blame republicans for killing union jobs at some time… or if 0bama tries it himself… this issue would come back to haunt him later.

Brendan @ 78, there is no question that Giffords and her family have worked hard to bring forward some recovery for her. She also had a battlefield surgeon and immediate response. I suspect all the follow-up has been handled by the finest team of neurosurgeons and specialists money can buy. I think a regular disability award would be in order, but that is by far not the same thing as a full-ride retirement. Do you not find it just a little odd that her constituents were left without their constitutionally guaranteed representation for a full year, and she just happenes to be leaving office mere days after she became vested in a full-ride retirement? She had the opportunity to do this because congress writes its own rules for itself. Had it been you or I working for some other entity, we would not have had the chance to do this. But they write their own rules, and those rules benefit them personally.
Once again, it’s our money that will support her forever on a full pension she did not work for. She simply squatted in that job during her last full year until she was vested. I’m not pointing the finger at you, but people need to remember these elected officials are not Gods. They work for us. It’s our money.
As for filling her seat, this, too, should have happened months ago, and Gov. Brewer, whom I like and respect a great deal, should not be wasting money on a special election to fill the seat for just a few months. Gov. Brewer should not be rewarding Giffords’ greedy decision in this way. Giffords should have been gone months ago, taken the disability she was entitled to, and the governor should have used her constitutional authority to appoint someone to fill that seat. Those constituents were deprived of representationfor a year because of Giffords’ greed and additional money will be wasted on the special election to fill the seat for a few months. This country is broke, in part because of political maneuvering by elected officials motivated by greed or cowardice. No Democrat would have relinquished their constitutional authority to appoint a Democrat to fill a position vacated by a Republican and we all know it. Gov. Brewer had the authority to do it, but apparentlychickened out.
Combine all this with the ugly remarks Giffords’ husband and family made about the Tea party and sarah Palin, which they’ve never apologized for, and it’s hard to muster a lot of sympathy or respect for her when you consider the two people, including a child and a respected conservative judge, who died and are never mentioned.
Top that with Giffords’ vote on obastardcare and the deprivation that is already causing, contrasted with the care Giffords receives, and it makes for a pretty ugly picture of the elitist dogma undermining this entire country, and support for it is clearly seen just on this one thread.
Turn the other cheek once again? I think not.

Very un-pc comment: She had a near perfect pro-abortion record. Ms Giffords lived. All the aborted babies didn’t.
Obviously, I would not have had her shot (and all the bystanders shot and killed) by the drug-induced lunatic Loughner, but I am not unhappy that she won’t be in Congress.

I really have to wonder how much the chief whiners actually pay in taxes to pay something back to all those who have served and sacrificed and suffered disabilities to defend their rights to spout off and whine and complain about what they don’t get in compensation for their pathetic contributions to the welfare of others. I have to wonder, too, how much these paper patriots give to charities, soup kitchens and the homeless.
Some 50% of Americans pay no federal income taxes at all. Members of the underground economy get cash payments and no records for tax purposes. I believe the ones who whine the loudest about what others are getting just want more for themselves and others be damned.
Representative Giffords was shot in the head in the line of duty. She was meeting with her constituents – the Arizonans who voted her into office. Why should she not have some of the same care and benefits as someone who was injured and permanently disabled by a roadside bomb in Iraq or Afghanistan?
American Patriot commented:
Oh! I get it. Gabby is one of those evil Democrats. That justifies any pain she has suffered. Surely she should pay for her own care for rehabilitation. She should not get the retirement she was promised as a condition of her service to her constituents. After all, she is one of those evil Democrats.
Should Republicans or Independents not get care or a retirement pension either? Maybe Democrats should not get Social Security? Medicare? Housing assistance? Food Stamps? After all, rathernot@cbs.tv and other whiners are allegedly paying taxes to support them!
