21 Year-Old Man Wakes From Coma Before Doctors Take Organs (Video)

A 21 year-old Arizona man woke up from a coma just hours before doctors were preparing to take his organs for donation.
Sam Schmid was in a horrible car accident in October. Doctors thought he would not survive but then he woke up.
Life News reported:
A 21-year-old man has awakened from a coma just hours before doctors were ready to shut off life support and take his organs for donation purposes.
Sam Schmid, an Arizona college student who was thought to be brain dead, recovered from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in October just hours before he was slated to be killed and his organs given to other patients.
The accident took the life of his best friend and college roomate and Schmid’s injuries were thought to be so grievous that a local hospital could not treat him and he was sent to Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Phoenix to receive surgery for a life-threatening aneurysm.
As hospital officials began palliative care and talked with his parents about organ donation, Schmid began to hold up two fingers on command and started walking with the aid of a walker. Now, his speech has improved and doctors say he will have a complete recovery.
“Nobody could ever give me a better Christmas present than this — ever, ever, ever,” his mother, Susan Regan, told ABC News. “I tell everyone, if they want to call it a modern-day miracle, this is a miracle. I have friends who are atheists who have called me and said, ‘I am going back to church.’”

Granny, that is why I do not put organ donor on my drivers license. My family knows what to do. Doctors are not God, although some would argue that point, and this story just shows h ow mistaken they can be.

save someone who has suffered a traumatic injury, and then put him
on a life support machine. Without being hooked to that machine, he would
have been dead 2 months ago.
If you want to leave it in “Gods” hands, you may as well not bring the person
to the hospital at all. Just let him die, as nature intended.

I’m sorry but you are wrong….. Doctors are not GOD…. God has given them the ability to study and be doctors, like you and anybody does it’s job, a doctor does his or her job.
My husband had a stroke and after a major heart surgery which was performed to excellency. We showed the doctor or thank and respect to what he and his teM have done to us, but I’m sure, it was in Gods hand.

To the “doctors are God” commenters: If you follow the MONEY, you shall see where the truth is. DONATED organs mean BIG BUCKS for DOCTORS and the HOSPITALS they work for.
For the greedy and over-anxious cutters……why delay a PAYDAY?

I wouldn’t be all that surprised that a provision will be written, or an interpretation discovered, that in order to get the “free” care everyone will become a “voluntary” organ donor, if such isn’t already buried in the legislation somewhere.
If Congress can force everyone to buy health insurance simply for living in the US by perverting the Commerce Clause, an argument for making everyone an organ donor is sure to follow.

Once again we see that medicine is far from perfect and we must stop trying to play God. Science in medicine and enviormental causes have become far too arrogant in their belief that they can control the human body as well as the climate. Wrong they are as we continually see.

Organ donation is a multi-billion dollar industry. One body can be worth over $80,000 just for the tissue components alone. Keep in mind that a dead organ is worth nothing. Organs can only be worth something if they are removed while the person is alive. That means for EVERY organ donor, the death results from the process of extracting the organs. Compare what a hospital receives in medical care versus what they receive from extracting the organs, tissues, blood, eyes, etc and “processing” (selling) them.

I know she wasn’t in a coma, but remember Terry Schiavo? This also has to make one wonder about whether persistent vegetative state is a real thing or not. If this young man was “brain dead” and then popped back to life, do these doctors really know what is going on with the human brain? My guess is that the brain is so complex, they can only make guesses. Have to believe many have been needlessly killed (including Ms. Schiavo). It’s really scary to think how this will progress under Obamacare when it truly will be about the dollars and not the patients at all.

Do NOT give your body parts away needlessly. When I was injured in a motor vehicle accident the hospital staff pushed and insisted that my wife sign a “donation” form. When she refused they shipped me off to the Veterans Admin hospital. There is not a doubt in my mind that if she had gone ahead and signed those forms, or if I would have made the notation on my Drivers License, I would not be here typing this comment.

As a healthcare professional (nurse practitioner) a news reporting website stating “hours before he was slated to be killed” in a news article is extremely insensitive and vastly inaccurate. This young man had previously shown no signs of brain life….in other words, he was already deceased and his body only continued to work as a result of the machines he was hooked up to. A statement like that makes healthcare providers sound like murderers who just want to disect the young man when, as someone who deals with the tragedies everyday, they were simply trying to assist a greiving family with organ donation, a selfless act that would have saved several other lives.
Thankfully, this young man was strong enough to pull through and it truly is a miracle. It is not often that we see someone who is pronounced braindead make ANY kind of recovery, let alone a full recovery. God was watching over this boy. That said, I hope the writers for this site see fit to more accurately report the facts and refrain from making such offensive statements implying that we (healthcare providers) “kill” our patients.
