Lech Walesa told a crowd in Warsaw today that there would not be a free Poland without Ronald Reagan. Walesa made his remarks during the unveiling of a statue in Warsaw of the late American president on Monday.

The News reported:
The former Solidarity leader said that “as a participant in these events,” it was “inconceivable” that such changes would have come about without the last American president during the post-1945 cold-war era.
Walesa added that thirty years ago, it seemed that the fall of the communist system would not be possible without a nuclear war.
The bronze statue of Reagan has been installed not far from the American Embassy, on Ujazdowskie Avenue, one of the capital’s most picturesque thoroughfares.
A statement from President Barack Obama was read out to the guests attending the ceremony, which said that: “The location of this monument is a fitting reminder of the close ties between the American and Polish people, and a tribute to the strong support the United States gave Poland during its long struggle to free itself from communist rule”.
The three-metre high monument, designed by sculptor Wlaydyslaw Dudek, depicts Reagen nicknamed ‘the Gipper’ making his famed 1987 speech at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.
During the Berlin address Reagan called on his Russian counterpart, President Gorbachev, to “tear down this wall.”

Poland has a large statue of Reagan; we have plagiarist, serial adulterer, and communist Michael King as Mao in a place of honor. People get the government and the country they deserve. Decline and fall.
Tom63010 commented:
Obama is not even a fraction of a President that President Ronald Reagan was!

Oh, it makes me so sad! How did we go from the wonderful Ronald Reagan to this piece of crap president we have now? From “morning in America”, “this shining city on a hill”, and “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” to “we’ve become lazy over the years” and “we cling to our guns and bibles”. It breaks my heart…..we’ve got to get rid of this poser next year, if we’re to save our beloved country.
MWTexas commented:
Yeah, I bet that statement form Obama was a big hit after he screwed them on missile defense.

OK now that does it, this is just too much…..Polish sausage needs to be banned in USA, by EO

I remember when Reagan made the “tear down this wall” comment. At the time, the thought of the Berlin Wall coming down was not even close to a consideration on anyone’s mind. It had been there for my entire life. Everyone thought it would always be there. I confess I thought it was a nice gesture on Reagan’s part, but nothing more. Certainly nothing to be taken seriously. It is amazing how greatness creeps up on you. I routinely I think of just how fortunate we were to have him come along when he did.

It is painful to see what this nation has done to itself. Its painful and very hard to forgive the people that voted to do this to our wonderful nation, something I may never get over. I cant even look my family members that voted for this monster, in the face anymore. I am ashamed of them.
Whenever anyone brings up President Reagan, I could just cry, wishing we had a leader like him once again. With a heavy heart, I miss him more as time goes by. Heaven is blessed to have this man, but I wish they would send him back.
God help us all, and this nation. Please.
Scott M commented:
One wonders if Obama’s comments, specifically written to be used during a dedication of a monument to Reagan, even contained the former president’s name.

Please bear in mind the distinction between the voters that elected Barak Obama on the say-so of the Democratic Party at the national level, and the voters that put The Stimulus and Obamacare into place. The Democratic Party at the national level failed to vet this guy, obviously (in retrospect) because they wanted a weak, inexperienced, gullible President so that they would be able to profit financially from their high public offices. They sold out the voters, who trusted their judgment and integrity.
Susan commented:
I’m just surprised he didn’t include his name in there somewhere. Because, after all, it’s always about him.
Dittogirl commented:
That may be true Valerie, but its no excuse for not doing homework and understanding what the result of this would be. Millions of us screamed, cried, and begged them not to do this to no avail. It was a pathetic snowjob, that most normal, slightly intelligent people should of/did see coming.
I was told by my own brother that he was voted for him because he was “cool”. Lord help us, is all I can say.

That the wall came down was more due to internal reforms (and an amusing miscommunication at a border crossing) than anything Reagan did.

We decided to be easy pushovers.
Frederick Douglass: Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will. Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue till they have resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they suppress.

God Bless Poland for recognizing and loving a good man.
Thank goodness that Romania finally figured out what to do with a Socialist, Nicolae Ceausescu.
Rose commented:
Sorry, Valerie, there is no such distinction. It took the same cold-blooded heartless state of Stupor to do the Stimulus as it did to vote for Obama or McCain.

Eubulides -you seem to have all of the answers… can you tell me where the term “Useful Idiot” originated, and how it applies to you?
P.S. Aristotle would kick your ass…
TiminPhx commented:
Poland is great. Sadly, I’m sorry Obama also sent along his requirements for where his statue should be placed (in front of President Reagan’s) and demanded gold leaf and jewels be used.
NW Boiler commented:
Is that Walesa, himself, rolling up the fabric after the unveiling of the statue? He is true blue-collar. He’s the son of carpenter and was an electrician with no college education. But, he’s a fighter. Ronald Reagan liked fighters; particularly those fighting communists. I imagine it was comforting to Walesa, while in prison and during the whole Solidarity movement, to know that they had the very public support of the US President who kept the issue in front of the American people and the world.
Soviet communism died by a thousand cuts. But you had to be ready to sieze the knife when an opportunity presented itself. Walesa created that opportunity by risking his life; he just needed a strong political partner. Reagan didn’t let him nor the polish people down. I am proud Ronald Reagan was our president and I’m glad he is getting the recognition he deserves. Although, I am positive he would say he had the easy job.
I can only hope that what is going on in the Middle East and North Africa will have such an ending. Unfortunately, however, I see no Lech Walesa or Nelson Mandela among the street rebellions across the region. I certainly see no Ronald Reagan in our White House.
Brandt Hardin commented:
Reagan has a legacy so distorted by the Conservative idolization of him that we may never have a clear picture of the real man behind the television set beyond the elaborate myth now concocted around him. Did he really rid the world of commie scum? Did destroy or save our economy? Check out my portrait of The Gipper in commemoration of the Reagan Centennial and help me figure it out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/02/happy-100th-gipper.html

Did President Obama’s statement even mention President Reagan by name? If not, I’m once again surprised at the pettiness and jealousy of which our current Chief Executive is capable.

Someone pls tell me this statue was NOT made in China!
Molon Labe commented:
Americans have Reagan, the Left has Obama. Only those lacking in moral fiber can support Obama.
L.E. Liesner commented:
Walesa says that without Reagan there would not have be a Poland, and here with an Obama there soon will not be an America. This is certainly not poetic justice is it? Reagan fought against communism and Obama welcomes it. The “useful idiots” have struck a dire blow to this country.
Patty commented:
Now, Mr. Hoft YOU, JUST MADE MY DAY, THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND REAGAN HAD A LOT TO DO WITH IT TOO.

Now, Reagan is truly larger than life. Thanks, Warsaw. I hope President Reagan is looking down through all the hard times yet smiles that wonderful smile and cracks one of his wonderful jokes.
What a man, what a wonderful man.

don’t rightly know, but do know that Herman
Cain got lambasted for stating the following:
“But not collective hijacking. What I mean by that, if they have
gotten so much for so many years and it’s going to bankrupt the
state, I don’t think that’s good. It appears that in some instances,
they really don’t care.”
meantime, i can only presume this gets praised:
“Where free unions and collective bargaining are
forbidden, freedom is lost.” ~ Ronald Reagan
bit more here & connecting links..
and a thought provoking question..
Have Reagan and El Rushbo Set the Bar
Too High for Conservative Candidates?
as you know, i myself have commented on how so many praise RR to the
extreme (ala: libs praise Obama), and need to come back down to Earth
and deal with the good, the bad and/or the ugly, facts w/out playing the
personality ID political game Obama et al are playing.. RR deserves more
than being a front for failing Republicans.. so sick of seeing RR’s triumphs
being used to mask today’s Republican failures.. they really need to get
the hell off his of coattails and man up.. imho, the free ride is way over..
