Bah Humbug… Obama Imposes 15¢ Tax on Christmas Trees

Barack Obama Hates Christians.
The Obama Administration today announced a new 15¢ tax on Christmas trees.
Heritage reported:
President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.
In the Federal Register of November 8, 2011, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Marketing David R. Shipman announced that the Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. The purpose of the Board is to run a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry” (7 CFR 1214.46(n)). And the program of “information” is to include efforts to “enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States” (7 CFR 1214.10).
To pay for the new Federal Christmas tree image improvement and marketing program, the Department of Agriculture imposed a 15-cent fee on all sales of fresh Christmas trees by sellers of more than 500 trees per year (7 CFR 1214.52). And, of course, the Christmas tree sellers are free to pass along the 15-cent Federal fee to consumers who buy their Christmas trees.
Acting Administrator Shipman had the temerity to say the 15-cent mandatory Christmas tree fee “is not a tax nor does it yield revenue for the Federal government” (76 CFR 69102). The Federal government mandates that the Christmas tree sellers pay the 15-cents per tree, whether they want to or not. The Federal government directs that the revenue generated by the 15-cent fee goes to the Board appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out the Christmas tree program established by the Secretary of Agriculture. Mr. President, that’s a new 15-cent tax to pay for a Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

Ok, this really is Bizzaro World now. Why would anyone think that Christmas Trees need promoting during the Christmas season? They pretty much sell themselves with little advertising or fanfare. I personally drive by 2 or 3 lots, selling freshly cut trees. Also, what happened to separation of Church and State? Why is the Government creating a new board to promote a Christian holiday? If anything violates separation of Church and State, it is certainly this!!!!!!!!
Personally, I have an artificial tree and couldn’t care less about it, but I would definitely NOT buy a real Christmas tree because of it.

Of course, those with full possession of their faculties know that most egregious government taxes and fees began as “only this much” at some point. When the camel gets his nose under the tent, it is impossible to keep the rest of the camel out.

It has everything to do with an industry using the federal government to impose a fee they weren’t willing to do themselves. And they should be punished for it.
Either go out and cut your own, or buy an artificial tree and save a buttload of money over the next 20 years.

I am certainly not a Constitutional Scholar by any means, but I seem to recall that only the Congress has the power to establish and collect taxes (Federal level). I would suggest that ALL retailers ignore the Dept of Agriculture and Obama.

Well except for leaving out the fact that the National Christmas Tree Association has been asking for this program to be put into place since Feb of 2008, with the assumption that it could not be implemented until at least 2010, and the fee is for promotion of live Christmas trees and not a tax, and the growers themselves asked for this program in hopes of increasing their live tree sales, your article is perfectly accurate.

I am a Roman Catholic. I don’t care if the tree predates Christianity. It is a tradition of Christians, and I don’t like people telling me, what is important on our holiday. Perhaps it would have been more obvious if the tax would have been placed on Nativity scenes though. But, who cares. Obama could mass murder in the streets of America and no one would stop him. What has been lost, no, make that unreported is that the tree growers requested this “tax” to raise $2M per year for ads to promote awareness of live trees!

This “tax” is the result of an initiative of the Christmas Tree industry to launch a nationwide campaign to promote the purchase of trees grown by American producers instead of fakes made in China. Along the same veins of “Beef. It’s what’s for dinner” and other industry promotions.

Jim Hoft gets caught lying on this website nearly every single day, and no matter how clearly you point out his lies to his loyal commenters, they make it quite clear that they don’t give a crap. Whenever more than one person points out how absurd Hoft’s false allegations are, Hoft’s fans simply take it as evidence that they have “struck a nerve” with the “liberal trolls.” Because making liberals angry is much more important than telling the truth.
