Bah Humbug… Obama Imposes 15¢ Tax on Christmas Trees

Barack Obama Hates Christians.

The Obama Administration today announced a new 15¢ tax on Christmas trees.
Heritage reported:

President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

In the Federal Register of November 8, 2011, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Marketing David R. Shipman announced that the Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. The purpose of the Board is to run a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry” (7 CFR 1214.46(n)). And the program of “information” is to include efforts to “enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States” (7 CFR 1214.10).

To pay for the new Federal Christmas tree image improvement and marketing program, the Department of Agriculture imposed a 15-cent fee on all sales of fresh Christmas trees by sellers of more than 500 trees per year (7 CFR 1214.52). And, of course, the Christmas tree sellers are free to pass along the 15-cent Federal fee to consumers who buy their Christmas trees.

Acting Administrator Shipman had the temerity to say the 15-cent mandatory Christmas tree fee “is not a tax nor does it yield revenue for the Federal government” (76 CFR 69102). The Federal government mandates that the Christmas tree sellers pay the 15-cents per tree, whether they want to or not. The Federal government directs that the revenue generated by the 15-cent fee goes to the Board appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out the Christmas tree program established by the Secretary of Agriculture. Mr. President, that’s a new 15-cent tax to pay for a Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

It is 15 cents NOT 15 % and only on sellers of 500 or more trees

One thing we know is that this Kenyan muzzie will never impose a tax on anything related to Islam.

Can the POTUS, or a Federal agency, “raise” funds instead of Congress? And In so doing, doesn’t that basically do away with the Separation of Powers?

This is beyond outrageous. It’s a coup!

Yah, this is what is needed……a government paid Board to promote the Christmas tree industry. What a joke.

  • Todd

Ok, this really is Bizzaro World now. Why would anyone think that Christmas Trees need promoting during the Christmas season? They pretty much sell themselves with little advertising or fanfare. I personally drive by 2 or 3 lots, selling freshly cut trees. Also, what happened to separation of Church and State? Why is the Government creating a new board to promote a Christian holiday? If anything violates separation of Church and State, it is certainly this!!!!!!!!

Personally, I have an artificial tree and couldn’t care less about it, but I would definitely NOT buy a real Christmas tree because of it.

    Stupid to the Nth Degree!!!!

So basically some cronies need a permanent gubmint job with all the perks. Building a bigger and more corrupt democrat party everyday.

    Here’s the trees they’re “promoting”:

I wonder what “audacities”, atrocities, and blasphemies will adorn the W.H. tree this year.

  • gus

They should put a tax on MAO ornaments.

  • Would never have been a tax if it was a Ramadan Tree.

You can avoid this tax by calling it a ‘Holiday Tree’.
This is what is known as a “tax loophole”.

    ;/s?

This will cause a 10 point drop in the polls since it is the stupidest tax in modern history.

What next, a $0.15 tax on makeup to improve the image of the First Lady?

Does a Christmas tree need its image improved? How about just getting the Atheist to shut up about Christmas.

Besides, isn’t this against Church and State? They are endorsing Christmas. LOL

  • KOW

How about a $0.15 fee on every Christmas Gift sold for 2011? Same difference.

  • gus

No, next will be a tax on all CHRISTMAS GIFTS and CHRISTMAS CARDS.

  • This will create a whole new department in DC to manage this. More jobs for Washington DC where there is no unemployment.
I am not sure if it is politically correct to use the description “Christmas Tree”
    anymore.

  • epador

Lets all REBELL about the Christmas Tree Tax!

Lets start a Christmas Tree Party!

We can all dress up like Muslim Terrorists, I mean Freedom Fighters, and Chop the National Christmas Tree into little toothpicks to float down the Potomac River, along with the ornaments of Chairman Mao and Joseph Stalin.

  • Nelle

I would think this was some kind of wierd joke, if I didn’t know it must be another distraction. I suggest we ignore it, look at what the other hand is doing, and let the next President decide what to do with the Christmas tree-promotion fund.

  • Justme

This is another ploy to ruin small business. I know Christmas tree farmers, this is just another way to reach into their pockets. The farmers I know sell much more than just 500 trees a season. Fifteen cents adds up.

  • JPeden

Yeah, what about to “promote” Christmas presents? oops, I suppose that would translate into support for IED sales in celebration of Sharia’s Ramadan. And maybe even into support for Iran’s nuc. toys.

But Dear Leader must be working up to a .15 cent tax on anything bought. Can’t make no law regarding an establishment of Religion, and all.

  • Estragon

I just LOVE the “it’s only 15 cents” people. They are so cute, and I think it is nice they are let out and allowed computer access sometimes. Bless their hearts!

Of course, those with full possession of their faculties know that most egregious government taxes and fees began as “only this much” at some point. When the camel gets his nose under the tent, it is impossible to keep the rest of the camel out.

But of course it is targeted at Christian observances. No way Obama is going to tax camel dung or halel meat or the hearts of Jewish babies or whatever the muslims use to celebrate their satanic rites.

  • wanumba

Monday was Tabaski. Sheep entrails and hides were everywhere, dumped after the sacrifice.
Just like Christmas tree vendors, scores of seasonal sellers showed up a month ahead with temporary tent shelters alongside the roadways with sheep for sale.

Shall we be seeing a similar tax on sheep for the Muslim holidays?

  • jimg

This has nothing to do with Obama hating Christians. Or any war on Christmas.

It has everything to do with an industry using the federal government to impose a fee they weren’t willing to do themselves. And they should be punished for it.

Either go out and cut your own, or buy an artificial tree and save a buttload of money over the next 20 years.

I can’t stand the government, but don’t blame it when an industry hides behind it, makes it the bad guy and uses those funds for its own promotional use.

The christmas tree industry should be disgusted with itself.

  • Obamas regulation destroy jobs

I wish they would pass a WIG tax!

  • harry pahl

The first thing on the agenda will be to decree that Christmas trees from hence forth will be referred to as holiday trees!

I am certainly not a Constitutional Scholar by any means, but I seem to recall that only the Congress has the power to establish and collect taxes (Federal level). I would suggest that ALL retailers ignore the Dept of Agriculture and Obama.

There is certainly something sinister afoot here, no way would Obama and his legions promote Christmas or Christmas trees.

  • FGT

It won’t take long before the Christmas Tree Promotion Board starts regulating.

  • MAJ Mike

I thought that taxes could only be levied by Congress. How can this be Constitutional? I’d recommend that all of us review Articles 1, 2, and 3 of the Constitution to better understand the powers of the three branches of Federal government. Completing that, check out the Declaration of Independence for the abuses committed by the government of George III.

Then, perhaps, check your ammunition supply and conduct weapons’ maintenance.

    Just say’n.

President Obama’s Islamist Sensitivity Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all Prayer rugs—the Prayer rugs Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Prayer rugs.

To pay for the new Federal Prayer rugs image improvement and marketing program, the Department of Islamist Sensitivity imposed a 15-cent fee on all sales of Prayer rugs by sellers of more than 500 rugs per year (7 CFR 1214.52). And, of course, the Prayer rug sellers are free to pass along the 15-cent Federal fee to consumers who buy their Prayer rugs.

Acting Administrator Achmed had the temerity to say the 15-cent mandatory Prayer rug fee “is not a tax nor does it yield revenue for the Federal government” (76 CFR 69102). The Federal government mandates that the Prayer rugs sellers pay the 15-cents per rug, whether they want to or not. The Federal government directs that the revenue generated by the 15-cent fee goes to the Board appointed by the Secretary of Islamist Sensitivity to carry out the Prayer rug program established by the Secretary of Agriculture.

Also under consideration is a 20-cent fee to use a prayer rug in public spaces. This fee is also not a tax but will help provide funds for private areas to use the rugs as Praying in public can be offensive to other citizens.

  • JW B

Well except for leaving out the fact that the National Christmas Tree Association has been asking for this program to be put into place since Feb of 2008, with the assumption that it could not be implemented until at least 2010, and the fee is for promotion of live Christmas trees and not a tax, and the growers themselves asked for this program in hopes of increasing their live tree sales, your article is perfectly accurate.

In other words…it’s a bunch of you know what…

    Loonesta,
I am a Roman Catholic. I don’t care if the tree predates Christianity. It is a tradition of Christians, and I don’t like people telling me, what is important on our holiday. Perhaps it would have been more obvious if the tax would have been placed on Nativity scenes though. But, who cares. Obama could mass murder in the streets of America and no one would stop him. They’d say, oh well, I guess we have to wait for 2012, to remove a man who lies about who he is.

Attack on christians? Hey douchebag, a fee was recommended by the National Christmas Tree Association in 2008 (note these are the people who actually sell the trees). Furthermore, this would have nothing to do with christians, per se, as the tree is not originally a christian symbol. As with most of chritianity’s symbolism, this was stolen from other non-monotheistic sources and then the true originators of the symbol where deemed to be something in the realm of satanic. Your blog is a crock of s h i t full of misinformation taken from out of context sound bites and headlines and you, sir, are an IDIOT.

  • Alex

This is one of the dumbest threads with some of the dumbest comments to visit teh internets in a long, long, time.

This “tax” is the result of an initiative of the Christmas Tree industry to launch a nationwide campaign to promote the purchase of trees grown by American producers instead of fakes made in China. Along the same veins of “Beef. It’s what’s for dinner” and other industry promotions.

Y’all are crazy, stupid, or both.

“It has absolutely nothing to do with Obama, it’s not a tax,” National Christmas Tree Association spokesman Rick Dungey told TPM. “I’m slowly but surely narrowing down who the culprits are who put out that sinister little statement for whatever reasons there were.”

“Growers have been working on this for three and a half years,” Dungey added. “It’s just sort of interesting timing, and unfortunately somebody decided to smear it. It’s growers pooling their money to promote the crop that they grow on their farms.”

According to a statement issued by the group, there are at least 18 programs already in effect for other agricultural commodities under the Commodity Promotion, Research and Information Act of 1996.

“This program was requested by the industry in 2009 and has gone through two industrywide comment periods during which 565 comments were submitted from interested parties,” the National Christmas Tree Association said in a statement, adding that nearly 90 percent of the state and multi-state associations who commented on the program supported it.

“The program is designed to benefit the industry and will be funded by the growers at a rate of 15 cents per tree sold,” the release states. “The program is not expected to have any impact on the final price consumers pay for their Christmas tree.”

  • Corky

No, America, President Obama didn’t impose a 15-cent tax on Christmas trees because he “Hates Christians,” or because he’s keen to launch another front in the War on Christmas. Christmas tree growers had the plan all along.

Remember those “Got Milk?” and “Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner” ads? Well, Christmas tree farmers and retailers thought those are pretty nifty. Plus, with more and more people buying artificial trees instead of the natural ones, they wanted to protect their brand. So three years ago — before Obama took office — a group of them started studying the pluses and minuses of starting a so-called “checkoff promotion and research program” of their very own.

I am really frightened by the lack of intelligence, compassion and anything that faintly resembles the American I used to know. It’s okay to disagree… that’s how ideas are born. It would be a boring world if we all felt and thought the exact same way. BUT, calling names is childish, schoolyard behavior. Racism barely hidden by what passes for a “political ideaology” is awful and beneath us. Man, seeing all the trolls come out, foaming at the mouth and ranting about conservative stupidity, and hatey-hatey-ness, I’d say Gateway Pundit has struck a nerve, with this one! They’re really rallying to defend Obama over this one.

It’s all for the good of the economy, of course; and to help the Christmas tree industry. /Sarc. off.”

Usually when people lie other people get upset, fancy that.

  • TheTruth

Does anybody want to backtrack on their comments since this whole story is NOT TRUE? The 15 cents is collected by an private industry group and has nothing to do with the government.

I hope people who posted here re-read their own comments. I think you are all racist and sad. Let me guess, half of you are also in the KKK and think US was better off with slaves?

Go back to your old country, you clearly are not someone who belongs in America.

  • Not Likely

Nobody is going to backtrack, Hoft is a known liar peddling his nonsense to people who don’t care if they’re being lied to. They simply want to hate.

  • reality check

I also want to point out that your concerns about this non-story are moronic, and that the person running this website is an irresponsible pervert who has no sense of patriotism or civic pride.

  • If conservatives didn’t have their lies and stupidity all they would have is their bigotry!

And what do Trees have to do with christ???

  • Chris

Jim Hoft gets caught lying on this website nearly every single day, and no matter how clearly you point out his lies to his loyal commenters, they make it quite clear that they don’t give a crap. Whenever more than one person points out how absurd Hoft’s false allegations are, Hoft’s fans simply take it as evidence that they have “struck a nerve” with the “liberal trolls.” Because making liberals angry is much more important than telling the truth. Their brains seem to be wired in such a way that any denial from those they hate is just further confirmation of their irrational beliefs.

Wow…I don’t come to this website often and now I remember why. Are all right wing fringe regressives this ignorant? Don’t any of you people do any fact checking? The stupid just burns!

I don’t know who is dumber, Dim Jim Hoff, or his legion of slobbering morons who believe everything he posts at this craphole of a blog.

Except for the trolls most of the commenter’s here are republican leaning conservatives. The KKK was 100% democrats, you must have gotten lost on your way to the D. Kos.

Yet another right-wing urban legend turns out to have no basis whatsoever. Oops, as cooler heads than yours already seem to have discovered, turns out that this “tax” is actually a fee the tree industry voluntarily had assessed, to PROMOTE the sale of Christmas trees.

But why on earth would you want to look that deeply into an issue? That’s the task of a journalist. And all *you* need to do is find another “gotcha” that you can preach to the converted with. It doesn’t matter if it’s true, as long as it rouses the rabble.

Pathetic. This is why we can’t have nice things, because of idiots like you and your opposite numbers on the left. You delude yourself if you think your dishonesty is any superior to theirs because it’s geared to the right political granfalloon.

  • Lazlo Toth

For those of you having trouble following Hobbitually Conservative, “troll” is a clever new piece of Internet Google Tubes slang. It means “someone who calls you out on gross factual errors, even when it’s something you really would rather not hear.” How rude of them!

It is interesting that some subjects just seem to bring out a bunch intelligent, deep thinking, levelheaded, normal, and kind people who just can’t help calling everybody names. I’m so sad, that’ why we can’t have nice things.

    You mean names like “troll?”

Let’s just say that self-awareness is not your forte.

Guys, guys, Hobbittually conservative is right. It doesn’t matter that this story is completely false, just like 99% of everything else written by Jim Hoft, because THE KKK WERE DEMOCRATS.* Ergo, no conservative ever has to tell the truth or be right about anything ever again for the rest of time.

*Of course, this ignores the Southern Realignment, as well as a whole host of other factors, but nuance is for elitists.
