The supervisors were the first to deploy pain compliance measures to control these alleged protestors. THE FRIGGIN’ SUPERVISORS had to deploy night sticks first, before the rank and file officers. Has it gotten this bad?! Am I in another world?! This is insane, officers wait for supervisors before doing their job? I would hang my head in shame, liability be damned. If you want me, come and get me. We didn’t need a supervisor to show us how to control a crowd. I hope Bloomberg is proud of what he has done to a once proud police department. I have been a cop for twenty years and been on the line a dozens of protests. Most protesters are nice enough, but clueless people. The confrontational ones are more clueless, but often fail to see the irony that they can sceam angery obcenities about “police states”at a line of a hundred bored cops and nobody is going to whip their ass without a credible threat to life. I have had a thousand idiots take my picture and write my name down, and hundreds of clowns (opps, “observers”) in green hats tell me they were there to prevent police violence. What I have never scene is a cop use force on a protestor. It sometimes happens, but it is rare. What I saw in that video was hundreds of people crowding in on a small group of cops. Unless you have been alone in a hostile crowd, most people don’t understand how scary that many screaming people pushing in on you can be. Also, NYPD command level personnel wear white shirts, not line officers, so that was a “boss.” (some non-NYPD NYC agencies may be differant) Not much is clear from the video, but a friend was in a similar situation when a small group of cops escorted a EMT into a crowd to help a sick woman. The herd started spreading roumors that they were arresting a leader and started pushing the cops back into the medical scene and throwing stuff. The cops just had to suck it up and do their job, which was to get hit with debrise so the lady/EMT wouldn’t.

Catherine,
The problem with a $20/hr minimum wage is that a lot of people are gainfully employed doing work that is not worth $20/hr. I was well out of college and married with a kid before I had a job that paid that much. To require a wage that only a skilled worker earns means that all unskilled workers would be unemployable. No more entry jobs. No more after school jobs. No more easy gigs for retirees and young folks. No more honest work for those that made poor choices when they were young. No work for ex-cons re-entering civil society. No part time jobs for young mothers.
That is the point of a $20 minimum wage. It will create a vast underclass of non-workers who would be utterly dependant on government handouts, who would vote as a block to support anyone who would offer them better handouts.
While I was earning a lot less than $20/hr, I still did just about anything a rich person does. They might have a big yacht, I could take a cruise. They watched the same movies/TV I did. They had a car that could get to the speed limit twice as fast as mine, but we probably were stuck in the same traffic. They might have a mountain villa, but I really liked my tent. I had clothes of the rack that looked a lot like the stuff they paid 10 times a much for. ($1k shoes and a $10k suit … OK Catherine, that is clownish, but I bet there are a lot of happy retail workers out there selling those). I worked, ate, loved, vacationed, and slept about as much as a rich person, but I just spent a lot less money doing it.
But ask yourself, Catherine, in our oppressive society, where the rich can have anything they want and the poor get screwed … what does a rich person’s X-box look like?

The problem with $20 minimum wage is that all the other wages would go up by as much. Happens every time that minimum wage is raised, one reason why the unions like increases to it. THat’s right, the wages ALL UP THE LINE go up. What you get then is inflation and the new minimum wage STILL doesn’t make for a living wage.

Craig- are you calling NAMES? I thought smart people didn’t do that.
Ok…so it’s OUR country. Who asked your opinion, anyway? Why don’t you buy a bus ticket and come down here to camp with the rest of those people who think they know everything like Catherine. I’m sure you’ll fit right in.
Just a note, Cath…if my boss had to pay me $20.00 an hour, I don’t think I would have a job very long unless she increased prices. How much are YOU willing to pay so the downtrodden all make $20.00 per hour?
Someone wrote protestors are like hungry people burning down a grocery store.

Also, Mad Hatter, I forgot to address your questions. In response to my citing an increase of 720% of Wall Street profits between 2007-2009 you asked:
“Did those profits raise your taxes?”
No, nor did they do anything for the common good as a raise in taxes might do.
“Did those profits lower your hourly wages?”
After the economy tanked because of the wall street psychopaths, my hours were cut back at work for a year and a half.
“Did those profits spend $767 Billion tax payers money on shovel ready jobs, and then turn around and say, that the shovel ready jobs weren’t so shovel ready? If you don’t know who did that, would you like to take a wild guess who did?”
No, those private profits coincided with mass lay-offs in the private sector.

Good grief. No wonder we’re in trouble.

Catherine,
How is your local coffee or flower shop going to pay its half dozen workers $20/hr?
I worked at a grocery store when I was a kid. They didn’t give an employee discount because the profit margine was on 2%. So how are they going to pay all employees triple the current minimum wage?
Huge, profitable companies like Microsoft ($70B revenue 2011) can probably do it. Bill Gates ($56B net worth (he owns 8% of microsoft stock)), could probably pay the increase out of pocket, mainly because Microsoft being a huge, profitable company that relies of a skilled high tech workforce of 90,000, probably doesn’t pay many of its workers less than $20/hr today anyway.
But its the small employers who don’t pay anybody (owners included) that would take it straight in the neck under your plans.
But again, the point is not to make a world where everyone has a $20/hr job. Its to put as many people on the dole as possible.

Yep, just what I thought. You are a bunch of blood thrursty warmongers. You enjoy people getting beaten up, just like you enjoy millions of innocent citizens being killed by your illegal wars. And what do you care, it is the soldiers who fights and dies, not you.
Cheering the Police brutality is really smart. Who do you think you are anyway? Do you think you are part of the elites? Just wait till they start attacking you, because they will eventually… you are already on their list of terrorists.
You envy the guts these protesters have, because you have absolutely none. Why do you let the protesting in the the lefties hands? Why aren’t you out there protesting the corruption of Wall Street? Oh I know. You are chicken, you are yellow.
There is a new protest in front of Texas Federal Reserve banks organized by CONSERVATIVES… will you be there? I don’t think so. You prefer spitting your hatred behind your computer in the comfort of your houses.

“Brian H #72. Why do you think that a living minimum wage would wipe out entry level and part time jobs? I don’t see your logic. The money is there. Companies can afford it. They just have to re-direct it away from their own greedy mouths, see above. ”
Because, Catherine my dear, the majority of jobs aren’t created by Wall Street ……..they are created by small businesses run by a start-up company who average about $80,000 a year for young firms, who can’t afford $20 min wage any more than you could pay someone $20 to mow your lawn, wash your car…….you get the picture. Messes up my numerology thing. 666 = 9 = aloof, withdrawn, distracted, possessive, moody, timid and uncertain. You are often unsatisfied with achieved results and you might get disappointed with life’s realities. You also tend to be careless with your finances.
5666 = 5 = It is difficult for you to commit to one relationship and you have difficulties to finish projects. You lack discipline and order, you are impatient, restless, easily distracted and you can be very impulsive.
Just askin’ Hard to pick. :/
