Despite his description of Social Security as a Ponzi scheme, Rick Perry leads Mitt Romney by 31 points among seniors in the latest CNN poll.
Byron York at The Washington Examiner reported:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s description of Social Security as a “Ponzi scheme” is drawing lots of criticism from rival candidates Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, and Newt Gingrich. But so far at least, it’s not drawing much criticism from the voters most affected by the issue.

In a new CNN poll that finds Perry at the front of the Republican pack, the Texas governor’s lead among GOP voters age 65 and older is actually bigger than his lead among younger voters. Fifty-two percent of respondents over 65 say Perry is their choice for president, versus just 21 percent who choose Romney. In the overall numbers, Perry leads Romney 32 percent to 21 percent, with Ron Paul following at 13 percent, Bachmann and Gingrich at seven percent each, Herman Cain at six percent, and Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum at two percent each.

Republican voters over 65 also believe Perry has the best chance of defeating President Obama in next year’s general election. Perry leads Romney 58 percent to 22 percent among older voters on that question.

Breaking down the age results in different categories, Perry leads Romney by 24 percent to 19 percent among GOP voters under 50. Among GOP voters 50 and older, Perry leads Romney by 41 percent to 22 percent.

Maybe voters appreciate an honest candidate, after all.

  1. hahahahahahahahaha

Well I am over 65 and no way in hell would I vote for that Prophet Perry! Look where the poll comes from! What a joke! CNN…hahahahahahahah

Do not pay attention to polls….PEOPLE!

  2. Every senior I know sees right through Perry and his buddy the kenyan fraud! Bilderberg/one world order.

  3. DO NOT TELL ME THERE IS NO NEW WORLD ORDER!

Wake up America! Perry is a false flag!

  4. I’m not a Perry fan, but I’m glad that someone is driving this discussion.

Now, I would like to see some enterprising young republican make a list of all the times that Social Security was raided by the feckless pols.

People understand “raiding the cookie jar”.

  5. #1

That is a big part of the problem we have in the world and my concern right here in America! To many druggies! Their brain cells have been damaged so much that reasonal thinking is “above their pay grade.”

  6. If you do not watch this then it is your fault! George old man Bush. And no….President George W Bush is not one of them! He did as best he could do because he loves America. President Bush was “controlled” in most part.

Please do not elect enother TRAITOR! No….. Perry he has to much dirty laundry!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc7i0wCFf8g

  7. Say, what if GOP seniors were smart enough to understand that no Social Security changes ever proposed would affect people already collecting benefits or within 10 years of collecting? What if GOP seniors believed that younger generations would be better off if we admit that the system is unsustainable, and deal with it? Would that mean that our seniors prefer an honest and bold politician to a smooth-talking compromising one?

  8. Ginger, not to worry. You know how biased the MSM is. The candidate(s) on the republican

side are going to get an anal exam. IF there is anything there it will be found.

I agree polls are not news. They can show trends though. Lets see if Perry can keep his

numbers up. Huntsman, Cain, Paul, Santorum, Newt all need to go. they are all not getting

any traction. Don’t get too excited, its early yet. Main goal is to remove Obama.

Make the opposition take the hit.

    powder is dry

  9. I choose none of the above, or…any of the current crop of candidates running. In Missouri, the goal is to get rid of McCaskell and Nixon, period. Alas, the best we have to run against Nixon so far is Kinder. May have to not vote for Governor or President this time around, just against Claire. Shame but if these folks are the best we can come up with, well we get what we deserve.

  10. MC…I know but so far with most of the people running is no better then what we have and it is very scary. We do not want more of the same.

Just watched people being questioned on Fox and they want Christie too! OMG….We are doomed!

  11. MC…One thing getting rid of the kenyan fraud the “racist” card will be lowered. :) :(

  12. The thing I’m concerned about is that none of the candidates is really a solid one. I’m afraid that the GOP will hem and haw, twiddle its thumbs till the convention, then just pick someone arbitrarily like last time with McCain.

McCain was just about out of the race, no money, no real support, just a name. Then the convention came along and all of a sudden “McCain’s our man”. I’m feeling a repeat in the offing.

Given a choice between Romney and Perry, I’d go Perry. But the whole field is pretty weak. Herman Cain looked good for a while, and may yet, but he’s not getting the time of day from the media, or the GOP (as far as I can tell). Ron Paul is loony as a sh**-house owl. I don’t think that either Bachman or Palin really have the endurance to push through. Glad to see Pawlenty go away; Huntsman needs to follow him.

If John Bolton were to run, that’d be my guy. I just think he’s too smart to want it. ;)

  13. Perry did an op-ed in USA Today on SS. Good tactic & I think Romenycare’s scaregranny attack on this will backfire…

  14. PB
you make the most important point of the day. The term at the time was that the wheels had come off the McCain bus. He was just about out before the Huckabee West Virginia business.
It is simply to early to say what will happen.
I personally don’t think Perry will have the staying power to be leading the pack 6 months from now.
And I’m also convinced that either Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann will end up on the ticket either for Prez or VP.
Of course, again, it’s too early to say.

  15. Ginger,
sorry to call you out here.
I’ve seen you post against Romney and Perry, and they’re in the top two slots.
    Who are you backing?

So, you see I’m not a hypocrite, I’m pulling for Bachmann. I see her as the most conservative person running. For some reason, the media and the Republicans seem hell-bent on sweeping her out of the picture, and it looks like conservatives are going along with it.

She won the Iowa straw poll and the very same day that news was devoured by Rick Perry’s politically-timed announcement. Not even a bump in the polls.

Just wondering if somebody else here was for Bachmann.

  16. #13 PB-in AL……. Sorry to say but the other day John Bolton announced that he will not run! He was going to be one of my picks. Palin…YES

Gary Bachmann is another of my choices…I am not stuck on just one as a choice. Others may enter also. Please not Christie. I love Mr. Cain too!

NO rhinos! No communist! aka/ Bilderberg/one world order.

Be very choosey and not just stuck on one right now. Like it has been said: It is early and please do not believe the POLLS! Who runs the polls? You gussed it! MSM…Who is in bed with the kenyan fraud in the white house? You guessed it! MSM

  17. I’ve posted that GHWB link before.
He is the first person I ever heard utter the phrase.

  18. Senior citizens are not the fragile little scarey cats the Rats think we are. We understand the consequences of this out of control spending. I remember when the Rats saw SS as a piggy bank full of money they wanted and got. Raided the fund. As far as candidates I still am waiting and seeing, long way to go. Although, I don’t see Perry as the Devil Incarnate as others do.

  19. Gary (#16)
“She won the Iowa straw poll and the very same day that news was devoured by Rick Perry’s politically-timed announcement. Not even a bump in the polls.”

Yes, but she admitted that she bought 4,000 tickets. Ron Paul almost tied her with less than 152 votes. So, he really won that one. And nobody even mentionned Ron Paul’s second place.

Besides, Ron Paul is winning all the polls so far, but when it happens, everyone here say that polls are irrelevants… and it’s only because Ron Paul supporters vote numerous time. So if you really beleive that, why post a poll that shows Perry winning? Where were the Paulbots this time around? Was there only Perrots on that poll? You people have double standards and you are always contradicting yourself.

  20. I was beginning to wonder a little bit about Perry, or perhaps about our talking heads, with their sanctimonious finger-wagging over the use of a word that encompasses the fundamental problem with our entitlement programs. Apparently they have decided that blunt imagery is ok for the state level, but not for the national level.

But now Rick Perry has used the kerffluffel to get his more detailed views published in the successor to the Paper of Record. I see this link was published above, but I’ll post it again, for convenience.

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/story/2011-09-11/Rick-Perry-Social-Security/50362610/1

“The first step to fixing a problem is honestly admitting there is a problem. America’s goal must be to fix Social Security by making it more financially sound and sustainable for the long term. But Americans deserve a frank and honest discussion of the dire financial challenges facing the nearly 80-year-old program.”

“As I said at the Reagan Library recently, Social Security benefits for current recipients and those nearing retirement must be protected. For younger workers, we must consider reforms to make Social Security financially viable.”

“These are the hard facts: Social Security’s unfunded liability is calculated in the trillions of dollars. Last year, annual Social Security outlays exceeded annual revenues for the first time since 1983. The Congressional Budget Office projects that outlays will be roughly 5% greater than revenues over the next five years, worsening as more and more Baby Boomers retire.”

    *****************

Rick Perry is smart. I’m glad he’s on the scene, along with the rest of a fine Republican field (and I am still waiting for the end of September).

Finally, after the election of Barack Obama, the question of how “qualified” a candidate might be is simply moot. Every time one of these sanctimonious talking heads brings up the “questions” of either qualifications or accomplishment, the answer is _________ is far more qualified and accomplished than BO before he ran, and has plans for more effective executive action than we have seen from BO.

This also applies to any Republican candidate who might, for example, contend that Michelle Bachman hasn’t accomplished enough while in a minority position in national office.

  21. #14….I agree. If he will convince the seniors that the current crop won’t have major changes, he can overcome this. The problem is that many of these will only hear what MSM promotes. A scared person without other options, will vote his interests.

Ginger, I would have supported Palin. My second choice is Perry (so far) because I believe he will beat Obama. I am a strong George W Bush supporter and can’t stand McCain. Bush, Sr is a good man so quit trashing him. Some people learn by mistakes and events.

Perry has picked up baggage and left some garbage. You can not DO anything without it. It’s called a record. Obama did not have one (made public) until MSM elected him and there it is. You will never get a perfect candidate but you can find good, decent people who love America enough to fight for it. We have a strong field.

  22. Seniors support bi national healthcare with mexico and the texas dream act? WOW. lol

  23. Romney is even worse. Perry is a fraud and Romney is an even bigger fraud. God help us!

  24. Are these the Seniors who haven’t heard Perry’s dream is to Destroy Social Security? just askin…

  25. Craig
    Here we go again.

This stuff about Ron Paul winning polls comes from his own website.
He’s never won any poll that I know of. He has won straw polls in the past, but in the case of Bachman, we see what that’s worth.

Also, as for Bachmann “admitting to buying votes”, there’s nothing to “admit”. They all do it. The whole straw poll thing is a big solicitation for votes. I just thought it deserved a bit more news on the day it happened than Perry’s entry into the race, and the supposed misstep by Bachmann with Perry later that evening (or maybe it was the next day).

As for Ron Paul, I don’t know what to tell you. You don’t seem to see that he simply can’t get the nomination. He’s just not conservative enough. He is only conservative on the economy, not on our national defense. He himself said he no problem with Iran getting nukes. Iran, a country that has sworn it will not rest until it wipes Israel off the face of the earth, having nukes is fine by Ron Paul.

I actually sympathize with Ron Paul a bit. I think he was at one time a fairly conservative guy, who tried to become a Constitutional literalist and complete libertarian, and then eventually discovered that he had boxed himself into some ideological contradictions. That’s the problem with libertarians (though most people who call themselves libertarians are just conservatives who don’t understand the term). You’re so worried about government infringing on your liberties that you don’t see your liberties infringing on mine. Then you end up saying things like smoking marijuana should be legal, everybody should have a right to buy a grenade launcher, Iran should be able to develop/purchase nukes.

Conservatives on the other hand recognize the value of personal liberties but realize that my rights end where yours begin. That’s why I don’t have the right to march down the street naked smoking a joint with a bazooka on my shoulder.

And that, in short, is what’s wrong with Ron Paul.
I’m sure you’ll have an answer for all of that, but it won’t change the facts.
Conservatives don’t see Ron Paul as conservative. He’s a fringe ideologue whose ideas overlap narrowly with conservatism.

All that being said, you’re going to have to get behind somebody else.

I think Military Conservative said it already, but candidates (worthy as they may be) who just don’t have the potential to get the nomination, should bow out. Those include Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, John Huntsman (who is not conservative), Herman Cain, and Newt Gingrich. They’re just causing the field of actual hopefuls (Romney, Perry, Bachmann, and maybe Palin) to spend more money on the primary race that could otherwise be saved for the billion-dollar campaign against Obama.

“As for Ron Paul, I don’t know what to tell you. You don’t seem to see that he simply can’t get the nomination. He’s just not conservative enough. He is only conservative on the economy, not on our national defense. ”

You mean he is not a NEO-CON WARMONGER like you people here. Because, beleive me, there is NO CONSERVATIVES on this blogsite. Being a CONSERVATIVE means to go by the Constitution, to be faithful to the Constitution. Ron Paul’s voting shows that he is the ONLY conservative candidate in the presidential. And he is very strong on Defense, he wants the troops home to protect your borders instead of protecting Irak or Afghanistan borders. You have NO RIGHTS meddling in other countries affairs, just mind your own business. No one is attacking you, all your wars were started by False Flags. Please wake-up and educate yourself.

“… Then you end up saying things like smoking marijuana should be legal, everybody should have a right to buy a grenade launcher, Iran should be able to develop/purchase nukes. ”

Boy you are good at distorting things. Ron Paul never said to legalize marijuana… he said to decriminilize it. This is a very different thing. You have more people emprisonned in your country than any other nation, and most of them are there for smoking pot. And what do you think the Drug Cartel is all about? What do you think your military is doing in Afghanistan if not for smuggling opium back in your country? This is a huge business for corrupted governments. There seems to be a few things here that you do definately do not understand.

And why should you be allowed to have nukes and others country shouln’t? Who do you think you are anyway? The Police of the World? Just mind your own business. and countries would’nt hate you so mucch and it would be a much better world. How hard is that to understand? Gee…!

  28. In this 1960 Supreme Court decision [Flemming vs. Nestor] Nestor’s denial of benefits was upheld even though he had contributed to the program for 19 years and was already receiving benefits. Under a 1954 law, Social Security benefits were denied to persons deported for, among other things, having been a member of the Communist party. Accordingly, Mr. Nestor’s benefits were terminated. He appealed the termination arguing, among other claims, that promised Social Security benefits were a contract and that Congress could not renege on that contract. In its ruling, the Court rejected this argument and established the principle that entitlement to Social Security benefits is not contractual right.

Yes, Virginia. You can pay and pay and get nothing.

Get your head out of the sand! Open your eyes and get educated and not fooled because this country will not survive if we vote who the MSM or trolls want us to vote for!

  31. Your country should STOP picking and financing dictators in other countries… and only kicking them out when they have a worse dictator they want for that particular country.

And as for Israel, don’t kid yourself. Your government is not Israel friends like you think. The proof is in the pudding. They give 7 times more money to Israel’s ennemies than they give to Israel. Your government is only trying to create chaos in every countries so they can start wars all over the globe. All they want is more fundings for their precious little criminal Industrial Military Complex . That’s all. And with all this money coming their way, they invent things like body scanners, tasers and all sorts of other horrible things to enslave you and to be able to build their tyranical NWO. Wake-up for God’s sake… please wake-up

Perry set a trap and Romney and Bachmann walked right into it…Politics aint’ Beanbag

Even Rush Limbaugh is warning both Bachann and Romney to try another tactic as this will backfire on both. Mediscare is a liberal tactic and Romey’s burn any other nominee but me in the general is probably all he has at this point (and we’re just a month into Perry’s run)…This will backfire on him too.

Bachmann plans on going after Perry on immigraton…she might want to chat with Tancredo on that. Latino votes will be critical to the GOP & Perry has the best chance to force a split in the voting block because Hispanic business owners will side with him. Texas exports 10 billion a month to Mexico and in this economy that matters.

“A total of 26,265 companies exported goods from Texas locations in 2008. Of those, 24,294 (92 percent) were small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 500 employees, the fourth highest number among all 50 states.

SMEs generated one-third (33 percent) of Texas’ total exports of merchandise in 2008.”

“Texas’s export shipments of merchandise in 2010 totaled $207.0 billion.

The state’s largest market was Mexico. Texas posted merchandise exports of $72.6 billion to Mexico in 2010, 35 percent of the state’s total merchandise exports. Mexico was followed by Canada ($18.8 billion), China ($10.3 billion), Brazil ($7.2 billion), and Korea ($6.4 billion).

The state’s largest merchandise export category is computers and electronic products, which accounted for $39.2 billion of Texas’s total merchandise exports in 2010. Other top merchandise exports are chemicals manufactures ($38.9 billion), petroleum and coal products ($33.1 billion), machinery manufactures ($26.4 billion), and transportation equipment ($18.7 billion).”

Sure we need to secure the US Border and enforce our immigration laws. Perry has a commonsense plan for that but he’s not going to pander to the xenophobes…

A wall across the Rio Grande is not feasible and neither is a wall across Big Bend. Stopping trade with Mexico is economically stupid. This is so much demogoging hooey.

  53. I like Freeman’s idea of providing each individual with a trust fund when young rather than retirement benefits when old, but we had better realize that this is a significant change in the character of the social insurance system. Social Security is structured from the point of view of the recipients as if it were an ordinary retirement plan: what you get out depends on what you put in. So it does not look like a redistributionist scheme. In practice it has turned out to be strongly redistributionist, but only because of its Ponzi game aspect, in which each generation takes more out than it put in. Well, the Ponzi game will soon be over, thanks to changing demographics, so that the typical recipient henceforth will get only about as much as he or she put in (and today’s young may well get less than they put in).Paul Krugman, December/January 1996-97 issue of Boston Review.
