Barack Obama demanded that Americans to “pay their fair share” today during his class warfare speech.
Nearly half of Americans pay no taxes.
The AP reported:
Tax Day is a dreaded deadline for millions, but for nearly half of U.S. households it’s simply somebody else’s problem.
About 47 percent will pay no federal income taxes at all for 2009. Either their incomes were too low, or they qualified for enough credits, deductions and exemptions to eliminate their liability. That’s according to projections by the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research organization.
Most people still are required to file returns by the April 15 deadline. The penalty for skipping it is limited to the amount of taxes owed, but it’s still almost always better to file: That’s the only way to get a refund of all the income taxes withheld by employers.

Half of American tax payers owe no federal income tax, and most of those filers actually net tax benefits from federal income taxes, according to analysis from the Joint Committee on Taxation in a letter to the Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee.

From Peter Schiff:
Dear Friends and Supporters,
As many of you know, last week I was invited to Washington to testify in front of the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Government Reform and Stimulus Oversight. For that, we can thank Subcommittee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH).
The subject of the hearing was job creation in the United States – specifically, what the government can and can’t do to boost employment. While many people have asked me in the last few days why I even bothered to participate, I think it was a valuable experience. I don’t expect that anything I said will make an immediate impact on policy, but at least some of my opinions got a fair hearing in the halls of power.
After the testimony, I did have a few one-on-one meetings with open-minded Congressmen from both sides of the aisle. Maybe they were just being polite, but they had no obligation to talk to me, or even invite me, in the first place. So, I thank them for the opportunity.
Still, I don’t think those few open minds in the Capitol are going to be enough to keep this ship from sinking. There just isn’t enough time or a strong enough will for reform from the American people.
That is why it is so important for you to act individually to protect yourself and your family from the new age of stagflation. Please take the time to view my testimony, understand the problems we face, and align your investments accordingly.

Fair share ? I wrote out 2 checks to the State of Arizona and the Federal Government in March to the tune of $15,000 for taxes I “owed” on an inheritance from my late mother. My parents worked their asses off for their entire lives to earn what eventually was willed to me, they scrimped and saved, we did without the luxuries we all now consider necessities. I didn’t grow up in a rich house, my poor parents both worked their asses off for what they saved, put away. My father died at 55 – still working his ass off. My poor mother lived like a hermit in order to eventually will what they had saved to me and my sister. She died in late ’09 wearing freaking rags for Christ sake. My poor parents were already taxed on that money in a million different ways before they died and still managed to leave me and my sister what remained. And this creep of a “president” wants to tell me what my “fair share” is ?
I’ve worked my ass off all my life and never went more than 15 days without a job (once, in ’91 after re-locating to a different state). Never made more than 40k a year. And I’m the one writing out checks to the government ? While I go to work every day and watch these young people sitting around endlessly collecting checks from the government ? What the f*** is wrong with this picture ?
I got one thing to say to this creep in the White House and his little rich buddies in the Senate:

Ritchie The Riveter commented:
JeremyR … the problem with your position is that the 47% have NO direct feedback of the cost of government, and therefore have no real incentive to vote for leaders who are fiscally responsible.
… especially when you add the class-warfare rhetoric of the Dims to the mix, leading many of that 47% to believe that they DESERVE the earned-income credit and other breaks they get … and that using the tax code to give them “what they deserve” is the ONLY way they can get ahead.
This is why I support the Fair Tax ( http://www.fairtax.org ). The “pre-bate” provisions of the Fair Tax provide a degree of progressive taxation (a person at the poverty line effectively pays ZERO Federal tax under the Fair Tax), while assuring that EVERYONE perceives the cost of government, every time they buy something.
Another aspect of the Fair Tax provides another measure of progressivity that I would think the class-conscious Left would support, if they were honest about their motives … when the rich guy buys his new Mercedes, he pays more in tax than when I buy a new Chevy … and when anyone buys used instead of new, they pay ZERO taxes for the purchase, under the Fair Tax.
But what the Leftists give up under the Fair Tax, is the ability to use the Tax Code as a carrot-and-stick to compel support for their socio-economic agenda and value judgments … so that just won’t do, for them; preserving the ability to jam their socio-economic morality down our throats trumps making our tax system simpler and more fair for all.
Ritchie The Riveter commented:
Rachelle … he is not making racism respectable. Not at all.
He is only giving racists more excuses for their bigotry through his foolishness.
However he is exposing the Progressives as Regressives for the nation to see … and that is good, for the truth will set us free.

Let us not forget that Craig is a Canadian who is so sad to be in a weak and pathetic British Queen mother worshipping country where 90% of the citizens live within 100 miles of the US border that he has to participate in our legal discussions.
But of course, we have to be charitable and educate him so he doesn’t sound completely ridiculous.
Craig, when you buy something in the U.S., that is a state sales tax. What Obama and the rest are talking about is the federal tax. We pay both, and one has nothing to do with the other. The IRS has no jurisdiction over state taxes, and each state sets its own sales tax rates.
Now as to how else Americans are taxed:
First they take the 15+% from our paychecks in the form of federal tax.
Then they take another 7.65% for Social Security, and a few more percent for various other taxes.
Then the state where we live takes a % based of what is taxable after the federal tax (they don’t double dip here so to speak).
But then, as you pointed out, when we buy something, we are paying with federally and state taxed dollars that are then diminished another 5 to 15% (depending on where you live) via a “double dip” state tax.
Then with what we have left, we invest it in the stock market.
When that investment makes money, we are taxed in a triple dip for “capital gains”.
Now if Obama has his way, when we finally die, whatever we had left that wasn’t consumed by recursive taxing will be taxed as much as 50% in an estate tax, or “death tax” so that we can’t pass the wealth on to our children.
I’m simplifying this for you, but that’s the gist of it. People who make more than 50,000 a year a paying a lot of taxes, and it increases as you go up with our progressive tax system.
People who don’t work, or who have very low incomes and/or high deductions (like multiple children) will be able to claim an “Earned Income Tax Credit”. This often results in a tax “refund” that exceeds the amount of taxes paid in. For example, a person with three children my have a 5000 dollar tax credit, but only have paid in 1000 dollars in taxes.
So applying the credit, this person will get a 4000 dollar check. It is money they didn’t earn that was taxed off somebody else who did earn it, and this person will still claim to be a “taxpayer”. When you add up what people pay in and subtract what they get back, 47% are paying nothing or getting a refund. That’s the gripe.
Side note, I think the reason Buffet moved his wealth into the Gates foundation was to avoid the death tax.

Per the IRS, the total amount paid out in “refundable tax credits” in 2009 was 109 billion. So the 47% paying no tax are netting/collecting 109 billion, which offsets, partially or fully, any FICA they are paying. They are not paying anything to speak of. As to the leftist mantra that they are all poor? Completely absurd. A family of 4 making 50-60k a year falls into this group. A family of 4 netting 4000/month is poor? That’s a joke. Netting 3000 month is not poor. And that is the income level AFTER insurance, since the contribution you make is deducted from your total income for tax reporting purposes (as are 401k). So you’re really talking about households of 4 making upwards of 70k/year.

All of his income comes from returns on his investments which are called capital gains! His secretary is paying income on her salary! The reason investment tax rates are lower is so that people will take some of the money they are left AFTER TAXES from their salary and invest it so our economy will grow and they will have more when they retire!
