Holding a slut walk protest in San Francisco is one thing… Holding a slut walk protest in Jakarta is something entirely different.
Indonesian women stage a protest wearing miniskirts at Jakarta’s central roundabout. About 50 women in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, donned miniskirts to protest remarks by the Jakarta city governor who blamed a recent gang rape on the victim’s choice of clothing. (AFP)
Gutsy women outraged by comments by a Muslim official in Jakarta held a slut walk protest this weekend.
Reuters reported:
Scores of women and children wearing colorful miniskirts and tight leggings gathered in central Jakarta on Sunday, outraged by a public official’s comments that provocatively dressed women are to blame for sexual assaults.
The protest was in response to remarks by the Indonesian capital city’s governor Fauzi Bowo, who said on Friday that women must not wear revealing clothes to avoid being raped or victimized.
He quickly apologized, but his comments were publicized widely via local media and Twitter.
The rally called on police and the Indonesian government to do more to protect women and help the victims of sexual assault.
Women carried placards saying “Don’t tell us how to dress, tell them not to rape,” and “My body is not porn, instead it’s your dirty mind.”
Fortunately, the hardliners didn’t blow them up. That’s a good thing.

Slut walk does not mean they are sluts. The rapists and the people who enable them always blame the rapes on the actions of the women, including what they wear. They call them “sluts”. Calling it a “slut walk” just shows how far off the mark name calling can be when you look at the women in the photos.
Women have been wearing short skirts in different decades since the roaring 20′s and the “flappers”. From what I see in that photo, there is nothing inappropriate about the dress of these young women.
I love the placard one carried mentioned in Jim’s story: “Women carried placards saying ‘Don’t tell us how to dress, tell them not to rape,” and “My body is not porn, instead it’s your dirty mind.’”
It draws attention to the actual problem that festers in the minds of Islamic Fascists. They are the problem not these girls.

I don’t see how it can be helpful to those brave women when those of us not trapped in the 7th century go along with the demeaning, “slut-shaming” language of the women’s Neanderthal oppressors. If anything, the Neanderthals could misunderstand (they’re not too bright, ya’ know) and end up thinking that the rest of the world agree that women who show their limbs are sluts. (Between you and me, not one of those women is wearing anything that looks short to me. Each of them is modestly dressed. Even the girl in front with the pink poster/sign is wearing granny shorts, imo. If they want it to be called “slut walk,” they need to try harder.)
